You don’t think that’s the reason? Are you going to go all investigative on me? Good to know your minds still functioning through all this chaos. He told you that Sherlock Holmes was looking after him? Izzy, Sherlock’s dead. I think your brothers a bit delirious if that’s what he’s been telling you. I think maybe he’s just trying to spare you from catching it. 

I’d like to say that they’re silent for once but it’s more of a, decrease in vicious crimes. You heard about the looting that happened when it was announced that Novum Malum was killing people; since the illness was doing most of the damage, criminals haven’t really needed to do the killing. That being said, I don’t mean all murders have stopped. I’ve still had a few but they’ve been pretty open close cases. One was a domestic, bloke found out his wife was cheating on him because she was gone all the time caring for her sick lover. He killed her once she started showing signs of getting ill herself. Then we got a call from a family who smelt gas coming from their neighbors home, turns out the who family were dead in the kitchen but it looks like a suicide from every angle. 

So nothing terribly interesting. I’ll let you know though when the next one comes up. Could use a wing man with your smarts. 

No not yet Mr. Lestrade. I think it’s a little strange to investigate the illness without more proof. Well I’d like to think my mind is always functioning properly, but yes. Um Lestrade, that’s what I thought too…but I’m pretty sure the guy’s actually alive. But it is quite possible he’s lying to me about how he feels, so I’m going to check on him a few times anyway.

A decrease is better than nothing. I did. I hate it when people panic like that. Makes everything harder. I also visited a store that was subject to such looting the other day. The thing is, it seems like people went with the stuff in the actual store, but they couldn’t get into the storage area. That might leave some medicine and supplies safe. A family suicide? But that sounds a little odd to me. Not that I’d know. Haven’t seen it.

Well please do. I need to keep busy. I’m helping a sick man, but I’d love to throw myself into any work you can give me. I can work with wing man. Seems enjoyable enough.

Isobel, how many times have I told you to call me Greg, or just Lestrade. Adding the Mr. to that makes me feel like such an old man. I'm pretty sure he's dead. Saw the body myself and if he was alive, Mycroft would have told me. 

I hadn't even thought about the medicine and supplies side of things. Panic seems to do the strangest things to people's priorities. I doubt they'll find anything that will help with whatever this is that's been killing people...seems no one has a cure for it yet. I hope they come up with something soon or I'm going to loose a lot of good people. 

Family suicide sounds strange to you? Seems the children and mum were in the further stages of Novum Malum. I reckon they thought it was better to die together then to have to watch each other slowly deteriorate. 

You're looking after someone who's sick? A boyfriend? I didn't know you were seeing anyone.

“Right, bench.” he had no idea why there was a bench in the frozen meats section but then he recalled it was an older neighborhood and a lot of the elderly seemed to shop here. It only made sense that the market cater to their customer demographic.

He wondered for a moment if he should pick…

The bag of peas felt cool against Sarah’s ankle and when she realize it only looked worse than it actually was, she realized that maybe she could find that Cyber-ship!

But apparently Greg had seen something too. While she really only trusted Luke, Rani, Clyde and Sky with information such as this, maybe there was a way she could tell Greg without making him think she was crazy.

“Sort of both actually,” she began. “I was doing some shopping when I saw them and I was curious because I’d never seen them before,” a sort of half- truth; it had been ages since she’d seen a Cyber-mat. “It also reminded me of one of those new mini- vacuums, and I thought I’d take a closer look.”

By now they’d been sitting there for a few minutes, and Sarah was hoping to try and see if her leg would hold her balance. “Do you think we could try it?” As she spoke, she heard the familiar footfalls of a Cyberman coming toward them.

Greg leaned back on his ankles and surveyed the leg closer, removing the peas long enough to see if the ankle was still swelling. "I think you might be able to walk on it but don't force yourself Sarah Jane." He shifted so that he was standing and extended a hand to her. "Here, let me help you. 

He waited till she took his hand before pulling her up and back to her own feet. The peas fell away from her ankle and while Greg was still worried about her putting pressure on her leg, the Cyberman made it's way closer and closer to the two of them. 

The screams clued Greg in that something wasn't right. He turned his attention away from Sarah long enough to spot the Cyberman making it's way across the grocery store, a few similar models following after it, spouting nonsense. 

"What the hell is that," he mumbled, hand reaching instinctively for his gun but there was nothing to grab onto. 'Damn it."

When you're not strong

Reading over the directions to Molly’s home, Greg swept out of the office getting pointed looks from most of the staff. He knew he’d spent far to long at work but he couldn’t help that. Just because the rest of the world was going through a crisis of sickness didn’t mean people just stopped killing. Instead it gave them more of a reason too, with everyone more concerned about getting sick, they tended to keep their eyes from anything but the news that fed their worry.

But a break was something much needed. There was only so much that coffee could do for him. Right now all he wanted was a nice cuppa and to make sure his kids were alright. Unfortunately Sylvia wasn’t answering his phone calls and her new boyfriend wouldn’t hear of his concern for Linden. So instead of taking care of his own children, he would do the next best thing and look after a friend.

So after a quick stop at the Tesco to pick up some lemons and a new box of nicotine patches, he was at the front door of Molly Hooper’s home. She had tried to warn him away saying she was fine and didn’t want to get him sick. But he figured if he was going to get sick then he would have already caught it.

Molly hadn’t moved from her couch in hours. Everything ached and moving around too much just caused her to be tired. She had the telly on in the background, but wasn’t able to focus too much of her attention on it. She had a waste basket on the ground next to her that was already full of tissues and an empty cup of tea on the coffee table next to her. She had a throw blanket wrapped around her shoulders for the moment, but she would hit random spells of feeling overly hot before getting chills and feeling cold. She knew she looked pathetic, but honestly, that’s how she felt.

Toby hopped up on the couch next to her and started meowing loudly. She knew it was past his feeding time and audibly groaned at the prospect of having to stand up. “Alright, I’m working on it.” she told the cat. She gingerly shifted around until she was in a sitting position and stood slowing, not wanting to make herself too dizzy. After a brief moment of making sure she was stable she shuffled towards the kitchen where Toby’s bowl was. She retrieved the cat food from the cabinet and put it in his bowl, trying not to breathe in the fishy smell that was making her already nauseous stomach turn.

While Toby happily began eating his food, she pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders and debated making herself more tea while she was still standing. Before she could make up her mind, there was a knock at the door. She walked to her front door and peered through the peep hole, confirming that it was Greg, who had graciously come to check up on her. While part of her was still feeling cautious about exposing someone to the virus she had, she was mostly grateful. She didn’t really have anyone in the area to call about this, and many of the people she would have called had someone else they knew who was ill. 

She unlocked and opened the door, smiling at Greg. Just because she was sick didn’t mean she didn’t have to be polite, or that she genuinely wasn’t happy to see him. “Hi. Thank you again for coming.” She stood aside to let him in and had the sudden realization that her flat was a mess as she hadn’t had the energy to clean it, “Sorry it’s not cleaner… I didn’t really think about cleaning today…”

"Why would you clean? You're sick." Greg replied, passing Molly, the shopping bag filled with lemons in his one hand. He looked around the apartment, noticing the cat within the first few minutes. "I didn't know you had a cat." 

Greg grinned at Molly before kneeling down and reaching a hand towards the cat. "Here kitty." he whispered, waiting for Toby to approach him rather then the other way round. The cat didn't seem to want to have anything to do with him, instead Toby seemed to be more interested in the food set out in his bowl then the new comer. Greg straightened out, his face still rather cheerful. It was nice to be needed for something once in a while and since his ex wouldn't let him worry to much over the children *to the point she would put security on him( he decided the best thing he could do with his time off was help those he considered friends. 

He looked around the flat quickly before looking back at Molly, "You look like rubbish," he lifted the bag and walked to the fridge to put away the three pieces of fruit he had collected for that day. "sorry, didn't mean to be insensitive." he finished putting the fruit away before turning to Molly. even though he had never shown much of an interested in Molly, there was something about wanted and needed that drew him in. The man was incredible to be able to manipulate others without touching them. 

"I think you should lie back down," he said, taking her arm. "You don't have to play host just because I showed up. In fact you should probably be resting anyway, with or without my presence." Even though he had no idea how to navigate Molly's home, Greg was rather quick to pick up on the sound of a television and thus led her back to the couch.

“Right, bench.” he had no idea why there was a bench in the frozen meats section but then he recalled it was an older neighborhood and a lot of the elderly seemed to shop here. It only made sense that the market cater to their customer demographic. 

He wondered for a moment if he should pick her up and take her to the bench but then he didn’t really know this woman and he didn’t exactly want to scare her off. Normal men didn’t do that to people they’d just met in the super market. Even if that person was injured. 

Wrapping his arm around her for better support, he took the weight of her one side on himself, then together they walked in the direction of said bench. Greg had all but forgotten his trolley now as he helped Sarah to sit. Then kneeling down he took a look at her leg. 

“Do you mind? I just want to make sure there’s no swelling yet,” he looked up at her for approval, smiling to reassure her he wasn’t a creep. “We could probably put a bag of frozen peas on it if you like.” 

Sarah nodded, wincing slightly as they slowly made their way to the bench. She usually didn’t shop here, but it had been close to the house, far closer than the one she usually went to and she’d wanted to be nearby in case Sky and Rani had needed anything. That, along with the news of the Cybermat had sealed the deal.

Now, she was glad she had, otherwise she never would have met Greg Lestrade here in the frozen meats section. Not that she should make it a habit…. Imagine what Aunt Lavina would have said!

His arms were wrapped around her waist and she was gripping his shoulder with one hand while the other felt out the wall for the bench as she tried to balance herself and Greg out. She gratefully accepted Greg’s offer of frozen peas when she finally sat down.

“Thank you, she said when he gently placed them on her ankle. “That’s really kind of you. And I’m sorry for not introducing myself before this whole thing. I’m Sarah Jane Smith, I’m a freelance journalist in Ealing.”

Waiting till Sarah was situated, Greg checked the ankle. It was swollen but not as badly as he expected. Since it was his fault she was in this state, he decided he would do whatever was necessary to make her feel comfortable. If he could reduce the swelling then there was a chance she wouldn't be upset because of his carelessness; not that she was. 

"I'll be right back with those peas." he said, smiling before he stood up and walked towards the freezer section just to their right. After a few minutes he located the peas and opening the door picked up a bag. It would have been a simple process had it not been for the flash of metal he spotted under one of the bags. It was moving. 

"Holy shit." Jumping back and dropping the bag, he stood still for a moment, the other shoppers seeming to ignore his outburst. 

Was that another of those metal cleaning things? What the hell is it in the fridges? Going to have to have a word with the management.

Returning to Sarah, he knelt back down and placed the peas gently against her ankle. 

"Sarah Jane? That's a pretty name," he grinned up at her. "And a investigative journalist?" he didn't practically like that job title having had to deal with far to many annoying journalists sticking their noses into his investigations. "Are you here to write about those strange vacuum things they have in the freezers? Or were you picking up groceries?"

John’s got it? I suppose he was going to be one of the first to get it being a Doctor and all. Pity. I hope he’ll be alright, might pop over and see if he needs anything but then I’m sure you’ve got that handled. 

I’ll keep you informed as to any new developments but thankfully, it seems like more paperwork. Even criminals can get sick. Thank the lord. 

I’m not sure if that’s the reason, but yes, he’s got it. But I don’t think this illness has spread the way you would expect. Something’s really strange about it. You need to stop working so much. Especially with this going around, your immune system won’t be at it’s best if you keep working those hours. It’s mostly a bad fever, flu like symptoms, and, um, I started coughing up blood not long ago. You don’t have to come here. I don’t want you to get sick too! We don’t know how this spreads.

I’m sorry you’re going through all this. You should be able to see your own children.

I don't really have a choice at the moment. If I'm not working I'm worrying and that tends to be my downfall when it comes to getting sick. I'll be alright as soon as people start coming back to work. Hopefully whatever this is won't stick around.

Coughing up blood? You should be in the hospital Molly. That sounds like a pretty serious symptom to me. If you won't go then at least let me come over and make sure you're alright. Send me the directions to your place or I'll use the bloody database at the Yard to find you. You shouldn't be alone, what happens if you need to get to the hospital? What happens if it gets worse? 

Yes well, the price of being a divorcee I suppose.

I didn’t go into work today. I am at home, actually. I didn’t really feel like I could make it to the clinic by myself to be honest. I’ve been doing what I can to ease the symptoms, but since no one really knows how to fight this yet, there’s not much that can be done.

I hope your son recovers quickly. Let me know if you need any favors from Barts. I can call it in for you if he needs any extra help.

John Watson? Haven’t heard from him in ages but yes, he’s a friend. So if he’s the one that sent you here I suppose I can trust you. 

I’m Detective Inspector Lestrade. So Lucas, acquainted with the supernatural hmm? I’ve got a few cases that could be called that. Missing body pieces, weird hieroglyphs and pieces of the puzzle that just don’t seem to fit right. -takes out a few files and tosses them across his desk- have a look and tell me what you think. 

Yes, I had the pleasure of meeting him a few days ago. Of course. He was a bit wary at first, but he learned that I do know what I’m talking about, so you can definitely rely on me.

It’s a pleasure to meet you detective. Yes. My mother was killed by a demon when I was a baby, so my family’s kind of been in the business of hunting the things. Which pieces? A heart maybe? I’ve seen a few cases of that. Hieroglyphs are interesting. You can use some to ward of demons or other creatures. -takes the files and examines them carefully- I’m pretty sure you’ve got a werewolf problem for starters, though there’s probably more then that going on here.

Killed by a demon? Christ. That must have been awful. And you say you hunt the things? Was John being tracked by one? Is that how you met him? 

-just stares across at the man not sure what to make of him- A...werewolf? Those actually exist? Do you think a werewolf would be able to write hieroglyphs in that state? -is open to believing anything at this point because has no other leads-

Bruising? Why the hell hadn’t he been looking where he was going. Greg moved around his trolley and reached a hand out to help steady the woman. She looked to be about his age, possibly younger but he was always rather awful at guessing how old people were. 

“Uh…Greg, no, I mean, Lestrade but you can call me Greg,” he flashed an apologetic look her way, then noticed a flash out of the corner of his eye. Was that a rat? In the supermarket? No. Couldn’t be, the think was far to shiny to be a rat. Maybe one of those new automatic cleaners he’d heard about. 

Turning back to the woman, he noticed the wince, his eyes landing on her ankle. He must have run into her harder then he’d thought. “Maybe you should sit down, keep weight off of it.” he suggested, trying to support her more so she didn’t have to balance on her own. 

Sarah Jane was grateful for the support. Greg Lestrade certainly knew what he was doing. “I think it’ll be fine, Greg,” she replied, even though she really did want to take any sort of weight off it for the time being. 

All thoughts of resting were suddenly taken from her mind when she say the Cybermat run by again, and she saw that Greg had seen it too. She seriously considered making an excuse to run after it, to see if it was reporting back to a group of Cybermen in the vicinity of the supermarket.

But then she remembered her ankle. It would be at least a day before she would be properly back on her feet and she wouldn’t be able to limp away from aliens. She wasn’t planning on it either. 

She nodded. “But if you insist, I think there’s a bench just over there by the frozen meats section. I don’t think it’ll be too far.”
