“The unlived life is not gone. It lives within us, asking to be lived.”

Hudson and Nader in 1955.
Hollywood gay stars Rock Hudson and George Nader were close friends for thirty-four years, from 1951 until Hudson's death in 1985. Unlike his friend, Nader refused to enter into a lavender marriage and maintained his romantic relationship with Mark Miller, who later became Hudson's secretary. Nader and Miller stayed together for fifty-five years, from 1947 until the former's death in 2002.
"Their bond is forged through, you know, things like a similar sense of humor and this tendency towards mischief. There’s also this shared misery of the closet. There are countless lovers, short-term boyfriends, and weekend flings that passed through Rock Hudson’s life. But the friendship with Nader and Miller endured."
— Mark Griffin, Hudson's biographer.
"We lived in fear of an exposé, or even one small remark, a veiled suggestion that someone was homosexual. Such a remark would have caused an earthquake at the Studio. Every month, when Confidential came out, our stomachs began to turn. Which of us would be in it? The amazing thing is that Rock, as big as he became, was never nailed. It made me speculate that Rock had an angel on his shoulder, or that he'd made a pact with the devil, because he seemed under supernatural protection."
— Nader on being a closeted gay actor.
