I feel like a magician giving away her secrets! Hahaha…
Anyway, I got a few questions asking about this picture (and about my art in general), so here’s a little process-guide! Hopefully this can help a few people or get a better understanding of how these things are made. However, take all my points with a grain of salt! There’s never only one right way to do things, and everyone has their own process.
About the brushes I use:
As mentioned, the Paint Tool Sai marker tool is really great for blending. A tip: It only really works well/properly if you fill the whole layer with a flat colour before hand. My only problem with Sai it is that it doesn’t allow very high canvas sizes (and it crashes on me quite often)
Kyle’s brushes but especially his Gouache Blair brush and the Rough Dry Fun Big brush.
I also use a modified version of photoshop’s ‘plastic wrap’ brush to give that speckled look.
In English from Yoimaru on Twitter.
As with this post, I want to keep posting these here on Tumblr so people can see them!!!! Because it’s really fucking important, folks! I know it’s a giant fandom and I know it’s messy and it’s difficult to keep track of all of this, but it matters a lot.
Even with credit, you are taking the attention away from the original creators.
Stop reposting art and please respect artists. They deserve credit and notes. Be decent fans!
Like learning how to make infinite chocolate, for instance.
I feel like this is a good time to point out the problem of trusting crowd-sourced information. Over the years wikipedia has become more reliable, but that comes at the price of it being heavily monitored—even then it frequently has errors in it.
Tumblr is not monitored. Anyone can say whatever they want, and there’s little to no consequence to saying it. That’s social media. Nobody posting here has to get a PhD in what they’re talking about; it’s all exactly as casual as posting status updates on Facebook.
This can lead to many good things, like spreading information about under-reported horrors (Ferguson, for example, would’ve been most definitely swept under the rug and forgotten if not for the combined efforts of all social media). However, it also leads to a dangerous climate for learning.
Everyone assumes that whatever they see on Tumblr is true so long as it has enough notes. Last year, for example, a text post grew wildly popular because it accused the creator of Five Nights at Freddy’s of being anti-abortion and a hardcore Christian, something which the OP heard from someone else, didn’t bother fact checking, and posted. This got out of hand quickly, with thousands of social justice-minded people reblogging and spreading the word. By the time that the real information got out, the damage had been done.
Treat Tumblr the same way that you treat wikipedia: it is a starting point. Do you see a post with NO source claiming that ___ is problematic/bad? Look it up on google. If you can’t find any non-tumblr sources, it just might be the highest form of bullshit.
Tumblr is not a place to “learn more”. Entire chunks of Tumblr are dedicated to claiming that teachers are evil for getting pissed off that you’re talking in class, or that parents are “ageist” for establishing a curfew, or yes, that you can somehow make infinite chocolate. It’s a springboard: you need to go to reputable sources with experts in the field to get the actual information.
EVEN if what you’re looking at isn’t something that is talked about at a reputable level, it is ALWAYS a good idea to look for multiple voices. If one source-less, proof-less person is spouting nonsense and literally nothing else meshes with what they’re saying, you might not wanna accept that as the truth. That’s how the anti-vaxx movement got so batshit out of control.
PAYPAL IS TRYING TO SLIP THE RUG UNDER US. Or they may have said this and just no one read about it or noticed/knew.
OKAY SO BEFORE YOU SEND ANY MONEY FOR THAT AWESOME COMMISSION YOU WANT TO BUY FROM THAT AWESOME ARTIST. PLEASE STOP AND READ THIS.
Paypal changed the look of how you will fill out information and send money. Thus, you need to be super careful. Don’t go all willy nilly through and be like “Yeah yeah yeah send” you need to stop when you see this screen right away.
Before you proceed, you will first notice one major thing: your address is showing. What you need to do if you are ordering a DIGITAL WORK (aka, it is being sent to you via the interwebz) is you need to click on your address and there around be a drop down menu of 3 (or more) options:
No address needed
Your Current Address
+ Add a new shipping address
Be sure to select “No address needed”, it is very important that you do. If you leave your address in there, Paypal will assume that you are to receive a physical package. A physical package which needs proof that exists physically. Paypal will want the artist to provide shipping labels and tracking info on said package. This is bad, very, very bad. Artists can get in trouble if they cannot provide these things.
Please, if an artist asks to send you back your money so that you can send it again correctly, do not be offended. You are paying them to do your commission, how can they do your commission with no money?
Reblog this, send this around, if you want to make a proper tutorial go ahead, I hope this was clear enough as it is.
Important!!!
reblogging cause I had like 3 people do this lol, PLEASE DON’T!!
I’ve been getting a lot of asks lately about the brushes and textures I use in my work, so here’s a BIG FAT REFERENCE POST for those of you who were curious! Bear in mind that I’m really lazy and don’t know what half the settings do, so don’t be afraid to experiment to figure out what works best for you :>
BRUSHES
Pencil I use the pencil tool with SAI’s native paper texture both for sketching and for applying opaque color with no blending. Lower opacities give it the feel of different pencil hardnesses, while full opacity makes it more like a palette knife, laying down hard-edged, heavy color for detail work or eventual blending with other brushes. Ink Pen Mostly made this because I’m lazy and I didn’t want to have to keep turning my textures off/opacity up when I wanted to ink something (even though I don’t do it very often), or lay down flat colors. I find the line quality to be much more crisp than Photoshop, and you can manually adjust in-program stabilization to help smooth out hand wobbles. Round Brush The plain ol’ brush tool acts as sort of an in-between for me in terms of brush flow. It’s heavier than my usual workhorse brush, for faster color application and rough blending, but not as heavy as the pencil tool, which has no blending at all. I like to use the canvas texture on this brush to help break up the unnatural smoothness that usually accompanies digital brushes, but it works just fine without. Flat Brush A brush tool set to flat bristle is by far my favorite to paint with. I don’t use any textures with it because I think the shape of the brush provides enough of that by itself. I use it for everything from rough washes to more refined shaping and polish. It’s just GREAT.
Watercolor Best used for smooth blending, washes, gradients, and smoky atmospheric effects. Cloud Basically a grittier version of the watercolor tool, because too much smoothness weird me out. Good for clouds and fog, as the name suggests, or just less boring gradient fills.
TEXTURE OVERLAY
To further stave off the artificially smooth look of digital painting, I almost always overlay some sort of paper texture, and it’s almost always this one, which I scanned and edited myself. You’re all welcome to use it, no permission required!
Using overlays in SAI is just as easy as using them in Photoshop. Just paste the texture into its own layer above everything you want it to apply to, and change the layer mode to Overlay. That’s it!
Want a more prominent texture? Up the contrast. Something more subtle? Lower the contrast or reduce the layer opacity. You can also use a tinted overlay to adjust the overall palette and bring a little more color unity to an otherwise disparate piece! Just be aware that too much texture can hurt the readability of the work beneath it, so I’d err on the side of subtlety.
Hope that helps!

Amazing. Thanks Lexxy! Really want to try out Sai now
Here’s a quick look at what my process looks like nowadays! I really only use the default pen settings in sai and the air brush for most of my coloring. Once everything’s merged, I use this brush:
to fix up some shapes which I definitely see better once all the colors are laid out. As for color palettes/theory, that’s still something I’m figuring out for myself, but don’t be afraid to rely on photos/pre-existing color palettes to test the waters!
so accurate it hurts.
… AND THAT IS THE WAY I MAKE FIRE! Simple and messy “how to gry”. I will add quick smoke tutorial / step by step too Just wait. \o/ EDIT: Sorry for small images >8C I am not good with tumblr image sizes and I have never understood them. But by copying the image URL you can see bigger sized images!

Apparently The Pirate Bay has been seized indirectly by the FBI and they are IP logging. Reblog this, it could save one or more people from a whole world of trouble.
I also use this same method for painting fur like this
EDIT: I also usually use the 4th nib but accidentally used the 3rd for this
this color is badass
