āI was working as a prep cook at a BBQ joint in Harlem. Ā I got off work early one day, and I discovered my wife with another man. Ā That was the beginning of all this. Ā Iād been with her for twenty-one years. Ā I was devastated. Ā I got right back on the bus and headed back to the city. Ā I went straight to the bars on 42nd Street. I got wasted every day. Ā I lost my wallet, my phone, my contacts. Ā I didnāt want to do nothing. Ā I just said āF it.ā Ā Iāve been out on the streets for eight months. Ā When itās time to rest, I find a place to sleep. Ā But I spend most of my time here on this block. Ā These are the best people on this block. Ā Iāve never experienced so many good people in my life. Ā Some of them help me out every single day. Ā They say: āWhat are you doing out here? Ā Weāve never met anyone like you.ā Ā Lily and her daughter brought the whole family to meet me on Thanksgiving. Ā I felt like a celebrity. Ā Then thereās Cheryl with the glasses who just walked by a couple minutes ago. Ā Love her. Ā John and his wife, love them too. Ā David and Michael are the best. Ā And whatās up to my man Sean from the beauty parlor. Ā Shout out to T and Marianne. Ā So many good friends on this block. Ā But they arenāt going to see me much longer because I found a program thatās going to give me a place to stay, and a job cleaning the streets. Ā Iām done with this life. Ā I donāt belong here. Ā And I know my grandkids miss Grandpa. Ā So if you donāt see me here soon, you can say: āHeās done it! Ā Heās gone!ā Ā But Iām going to shock everybody.
