Honeychain Volume 1, Chapter 10
“YOU COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED, KAZUKO!!!” Antoine rages at his daughter, who looked down at the floor in guilt and shame. “What reason was soooo important that you’d risk your life?” Rukia gives her a look. Kazuko sighs, knowing fully well how stupid she had been “I’m sorry....” Antoine pinches the bridge of his nose, his eyes screwed tightly shut “You just had us worried. What if something happened to you? And we didn’t know where you were going.” “Maybe if you let her learn how to use a gun and fight, Antoine, you wouldn’t have to babysit her every moment of her life.” Fudo leaned against the countertop, sipping a cold glass of water. “Oh shut up man” he turns back to his daughter, “You’re not to go out at all, for 3 weeks. And in that time....” He looks to Fudo “Want her to learn how to fight so badly? Teach her.” Fudo and Kazuko stare at Antoine and then at each other. He had never let Kazuko anywhere near a gun, much less learn how to use one. Maybe the recent expedition was helpful after all.... “But don't think just because I'm letting you learn that this means you can just go out alone any time you want.” He reminds his daughter. She nods, grinning, she always wanted to be able to fight just like everyone else. Chris gives her a thumbs up behind Antoine’s back. (i havent written in SO long and sorry for the short chapter i just wanted to post)
Honeychain Volume 1, Chapter 9
The two walk along the streets, keeping keen eye on their surroundings. “You were pretty good with that handgun, what’s your specialty?” Kazuko asks. Tory strikes a pose with her hands “I’m a dancer.” They grin “You?” “I make Robots.” She smiles. “Oooh! Like super big mechas, or like.... Teeny tiny bugs?” They swing the gun on their finger. “All” Kazuko fiddles with the radio again, hoping she could find the signal. Shoma walks into Atsushi’s mechanic’s garage, watching silently as he works on a car, one he had been building all day from scratch. “Have you ever felt... happy... when you think of someone?” Shoma asks quietly. Atsushi doesn’t look up from his work “How long were you standing there?” “Answer the question.” He shifts his weight, mildly annoyed. Atsushi stands up, wiping his hands on his pants at he turn to Shoma “I guess I have. Why this all of a sudden?” Then he spies Kazuko’s hat in his hand. “Ohhh!” Atsushi grins “This is about Kazuko, isn’t it? She left her hat here?” Shoma scowls “No, it’s not.” Atsushi strides over, resting his hand on Shoma’s shoulder “Listen man, it’s okay to have a crush on someone, or even just think they’re kinda cool. I know you got your whole ‘i’ve sworn off having any friends, especially women’ thing, but all I’m saying is that it doesn’t hurt to let people in.” “It does.” He answers blandly. Atsushi rolls his eyes “I know this is about her, and she doesn’t seem like a bad per-” “No one does at first.” He gives him a pained look “Shoma..... You asked me a question, I'm answering you. And I’m telling you that if you want to be friends with her or whatever, you should, don’t let whatever happened to you in the past ruin your future, bro.” Shoma nods, not really believing him. Letting people in only lead to bad things. Surely Atsushi knew this? Still, he knew he was right. Kazuko didn’t seem like the kind of person to hurt anyone. Something about her.... They suddenly hear a knock on the door. Atsushi reaches for his pocket knife as he goes over, and opens the door. Kazuko’s eyes widen at the knife “Woah-” He laughs, embarrassed “Just a precaution, so you’re here for your hat? You might have to wrest it from Shoma, he wont let go of it.” “Um-” She blushes, looking over at Shoma who glares at her. Atsushi steps aside “C’mon in kid, who’s your friend here?” Tory grins at him “The name’s Tory. And you?” “Atsushi, nice to meet you. Damn you’re small” He laughs They stick their tongue out at him “Damn you’re the jolly green giant” Shoma strides over to Kazuko, holding out her beret “Your beret.” She looks down, avoiding meeting his eyes, his stern tone putting her on edge. He places it on her head “You shouldn’t leave your stuff around. It’s irresponsible.” She looks up at him, not rising her head. Shoma looks down at her, trying not to let the wild hammering of his heart in his chest show on his face. Why the fuck did she look at him like that? Like she was afraid of him.... Was she afraid of him? Should he ask? Tory and Atsushi look to both, then to each other, sharing a look. “Would you guys like to stay a bit?” Shoma finds himself asking, despite all sence. Kazuko finally says something “We- Um- We should go....” Dissapointment “That’s alright.” He watches as she again refuses to meet his eyes, says goodbye and leaves with her friend. He leans against the wall, staring at Atsushi. “That was a good start. Now maybe don’t sound so angry. Or glare at her”
Honeychain Volume 1, Chapter 8
“Mom, Dad!” Kazuko calls out as she pulls on a navy blue windbreaker she found in the hall closet “I’m going out real quick!” She grabs her radio and Chris’ hand gun, and runs out the house. She walks down the streets quickly, running only on her sudden burst of confidence, trying to remember the way. Fear crept in, reminding her of the Infected and the risk of being killed. She gripped the handgun firmly, pushing on. Suddenly she heard growls behind her. She froze, praying fervently that it wasn’t what she thought it was. Turning around shakily, she’s met with the sight of five Infected persons, their eyes clouded over and their skin a sickly pale color- almost translucent. Their lips were chapped and crusted with blood, their teeth were chipped and jagged, and their torn and ragged clothes were stained with blood. Kazuko let out a small cry, pulling out the gun and feeling quite stupid in the second she realized she had no idea now to use it. She had never been alone like this before. She had always been with someone, never had to defend herself. She fumbles with the radio next, trying to find the frequency, the one that would immobilize them. But it had been knocked out. The Infected started to run towards her, she held the gun out again, hoping against hope that she could figure it out and it would fire. A gunshot sounded. But it hadn’t come from her. “You can’t just freeze up like that!” A feminine sounding voice calls out to her, followed by more gunshots. Kazuko looks over and see’s a small person who wore so many colors they looked like the physical embodiment of a box of Crayola crayons. They run their fingers through their short and spiky black hair, and looks urgently at Kazuko with soft pink eyes the color of cotton candy. Kazuko looks down bashfully “I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention, I thought I could-” The person laughs, “Don’t worry, It’s okayyyy!” They walk over, grinning “Do you even know how to use that thing?” They gesture to the handgun. Kazuko laughs awkwardly “No... It’s my cousin’s....” “Figured it wasn’t yours, no offence. So why are you out here alone? You clearly cant use that gun and the frequency is down, so unless you were planning to fight the Infected hand-to-hand......” They give her a look. She felt pretty stupid now, having put her life in danger just for a hat. “I left something at.....” She searches for the world to describe her relation to Shoma but settles for default “a friend’s place.” The person snorts and fixes their glasses “Oh yeah I can see it now, ‘died for the sake of something they left at a friend’s place’. Speaking of which, what name would be on that tombstone?” Kazuko laughs “I’m Kazuko Hagakure.” She puts her hand out. The person smiles “Tory Barlowe, It’s great to meet ya!” they take her hand, shaking it enthusiastically. “So what’re you doing out here?” Kazuko asks, taking in Tory’s elegant stance and sure hold on their own gun. Tory gestures to the building behind them, “My girlfriend’s mom owns the hotel here. My dad is the bartender. I saw you from out the window so I decided to swoop in and save the day” they give Kazuko a goofy look. “You didn’t get switched in the Soiree?” Kazuko asks incredulously. They shake their head “We made sure to end up in the same City section, Asura built this place with everything she had in her. We won’t just.... Abandon it. You know?” She nods, even though she wasn’t quite sure she knew. “So where are you going? I should walk you there, so you don’t become zombie food.” Tory smiles. “I’m not sure? I mean, I know where I’m going, but only by sight.” Kazuko rambles. Tory nods, going to the entry of the Hotel “Let me just let my dad know, alright?” “Alright!” Kazuko smiles. They come back, grinning “Okay! Lets gooo!”
Honeychain Volume 1, Chapter 7
Shoma Hitsugi laid his medical tools all in a straight line. Just the way he liked it. He pulled off his scrub shirt and hangs it on a peg next to his tools’ table. Out of the corner of his eye he spots something that he could be sure did not belong in his office. A cerulean colored beret. It certainly wasn’t his, in fact it looked like it was a girl’s. It took him a moment to place it. Kazuko. This was hers. She must have left it there.... He crosses the room and picks it up, immediately noting its fragrance of vanilla and lavender. A warm feeling takes him over, was this how she smelled? He closes his eyes tightly, what the hell was he thinking, this warm feeling at the thought of her. She was a stranger, and a girl at that. He had sworn off ever getting tangled up with any women. So why.... Why couldn’t he stop thinking about her? Why did holding her beret, and smelling the scent of her, why did these things warm his heart and fill him with a good feeling? He stands there for a few moments, unsure of what to do with it. Should he give it to her? He didn’t even know where she lived..... Should he tell Atsushi? He would probably make a big deal out of it. And thinking about his greasy hands touching her beret- Kazuko Hagakure lay flat on her back in her family’s new house, staring up at the whirring ceiling fan. She reaches up to pull her beret over her face, the early morning light was hurting her eyes. But when she raised her hand to her hair she found her beret wasn’t there. She bolts up, looking around the room. She was wearing it when she went to the Soiree, and she was wearing it when- Oh. She rests her head on her hands as she realizes she left it by Shoma and Atsushi..... She couldn’t just go back there, she was pretty sure Shoma hated her, and Atsushi was nice enough but his overbearing enthusiasm both relieved and intimidated her. Could she get Chris or Tommy to go with her again? Tommy probably wouldn’t care, Chris would probably tease her ruthlessly about it. She flops back onto the couch, covering her face with her hands. What was she going to do? Should she just.... leave it? Why was she so afraid to go back, it’s so silly, Shoma was just some rude boy, he didn’t mean anything. Kazuko gets up off the couch, determined. She would get her beret back.
Honeychain Volume 1, Chapter 6
A generally nondescript looking building stood between a looming skyscraper and a place that resembled a bodega. And this is where Kazuko, Chris, and Tommy find themselves having been led by Shoma.“Place seems a bit creepy” Chris remarks, raising his eyebrows at Shoma.“Does it, now?” Shoma says, undoing the chain and lock that held the two large iron doors together. As soon as the doors open they’re met by a loud clanging noise. “And that would be Hachirou, most likely setting something on fire or breaking something.” Shoma strides inside, it was clear this was somewhere he felt the most comfortable in. “Ohhhh hey!!!! Shoma!” Atsushi comes over, wiping his grease stained hands on a bandana already stained prior by pre existing grease stains. “You.” Shoma obliges Atsushi’s fist bump, but when he turns to Chris and Kazuko and Tommy, he wipes his hand on his sweater behind his back. Atsushi laughs “Excuse him, he’s just moody.” He looks at Kazuko “Oh you’re the girl from the Soiree, Kazuko right? Shoma couldn’t stop talking about you.” Shoma gives Atsushi a fierce look “I did no such thing!” Atsushi gives Kazuko a knowing look before walking away. Kazuko blushes but manages to keep a straight face. Chris looks from Shoma to Kazuko “Anyway- Shoma, you’re a vet right?” Shoma looks like he was startled out of thought “Right” He leads them to a back room, done up like a vet’s office, a small yellow bird flies down from the rafters. “Hello” Shoma puts out his arm, the bird comes to rest on it. Kazuko smiles “Aww they’re so cute!” the bird chirps and cranes its neck around as if striking a pose. Shoma smiles slightly “It seems he enjoys your company” Kazuko laughs. “Well I enjoy his” Later they all sat in Atsushi’s mechanic’s garage, joking around and talking about everything and nothing. Kazuko tugs on Chris’s jacket “Can we go back to mom and dad? I’m hungry...” Chris nods and gets up, but Atsushi puts his hand on Chris’s shoulder “Nahh its okay, I’ll make something for everyone. You guys want anything?” Chris shrugs, “Sure. Tommy?” Tommy looks up “Huh- Oh- Sure.” Atsushi nods at them then looks at Shoma “You hungry dude?” “I do not need to eat, unlike you” Shoma crosses his arms across his chest and sits back. “Your body converts food into energy, and you need energy to be able to live. You should eat something.” Kazuko sets her lips in a tight and final line. Shoma raises his eyebrows at her, then sighs “I suppose it wouldn’t hurt.” After they all ate, Kazuko, Chris, and Tommy head off to go back to the house. Rukia grins at them as they walk in “Y’all kids had fun?” Kazuko looks down, touching the tips of her pointer fingers together. “We met this guy that Kazuko bumped into at the Soiree, we had lunch with him and a friend of his at this place that was a mix of a vet’s office and a mechanic’s garage.” Tommy says, not bothering to look up. “Thank you Tommy.” Rukia nods, then looks at her daughter “So why do you look so.....nervous. Hm, munchkin?” “She likes him.” Tommy ads. Rukia’s eyes light up, “Awwwww” Kazuko flushes profusely “Tommy!! Mom!!” Chris chuckles and tousles her hair. Antoine walks over “What’s happening?” Rukia links her arm around his “Our little girl’s got a crushhhhhhhhh” He crosses his arms across his chest “On who?” None of the kids rushed to answer him. “I don’t have a crush-” Kazuko flushes again. Antoine looks stern “She’d better not, she’s way too young” “We were younger than her when we met, Antoine.” Rukia rolls her eyes. Antoine pouts, seeming to drop the topic “Anyway, we cleaned the house, and cooked dinner.” Everyone nods, not quite sure what else to say, they walk off to go do their own things. Kazuko flops down onto the couch, thinking about Shoma. She couldn’t have any feelings for a guy she just met, right? Especially one as self-righteous and rude as him....
Honeychain Volume 1, Chapter 5
“Mom! Dad!” Kazuko rushes to them, hugging them tight. They hold their daughter close. “We did it!” Kitaro grins at them. Fudo looks around at the crowd “Some weren’t so lucky...” People around the room were in different states of hysteria, there was yelling from everyone. But no one had any time to wallow in their greif, they were being rounded up and herded out through the large mahogany doors from which they came.
After another van ride, mixed emotions all around, some people reunited with people they lost, others separated from people they love. They’re dropped off in the run down and dilapidated City neighborhood, and after being curtly ushered off the van, they all sort of stand there. A unanimous feeling of “What now?” can be felt all around. Antoine takes his daughter’s hand, then looks to the rest of their group “We should find somewhere to stay...” They walk the streets cautiously, keeping an eye out for Infected or hostile Citizens. The buildings were all abandoned, but the atmosphere felt thick with ghosts of the lives that were lost and made to uproot. They enter a normal house, it looked fairly unused, but dishes were still on the table, food untouched, beds not even made. Rukia flops down onto the couch, “Let’s just relax...” Antoine runs his finger along the table “No matter how many times we go through this, its always so fucking eerie” Kazuko looks at her parents, feeling their melancholy, then looks at the rest of their family, biting her lip, unsure of what to do now. Chris walks over and rests his hand on the top of her head “Wanna go explore?” Kazuko lights up, grinning “Yeah!” She looks at her mom and dad “Can I?” Antoine gives her a tight lipped frown “It’s kind of dange-” Rukia cuts him off “Go have fun munchkin, Chris you watch her, right?” He salutes her playfully, but his eyes held a deepset seriousness. He was very protective of Kazuko. Tommy looks up from his tablet “Oh- Can I go too?”. Chris puts his arm around his twin’s shoulder “Lets go” After they leave, Antoine turns to Rukia “Its dangerous out there! What if something happened to them?!” Rukia rolls her eyes “First of all, don’t have an attitude with me. Second of all, they’re fully able to take care of themselves.” “They’re children!” He walks over to Rukia Rukia glares at him “Chris is 20. And Kazuko isn’t 3 anymore, you don’t have to baby her like she’s stupid, let the girl live her life.” “That doesn’t matter, I’m trying to protect her! This isn’t a dream, this is real, they could die or get infected. Would you want that?” He looks away bitterly. “Of course I don’t, but I think that we’ve trained them enough that they’ll be alright. What are they going to do when we aren’t here anymore? If you keep babying them, they won’t be able to fend for themselves.” She reaches out and takes his hand in hers “I know you want to protect her, I understand, but you can’t force her down like that, she’s strong and capable. Look who she grew up with.” Antoine manages a small smile at his girlfriend “I guess you’re right.” Chris, Kazuko, and Tommy walk along the street. Chris had his gun in his hand, grasping it tightly, but his face held nothing but lightheartedness. Kazuko smiles at Chris “I guess to put a positive spin on this, its a change of scenery right?” Tommy looks around the City “It’s exactly the same as the old one. They’re all the same, Kazuko.” Her smile slips a bit “But its a new one-” “Aw don’t be such a mood killer, Tommy” Chris socks his brother in the arm. Tommy rubs his arm, “Don’t do that-” Kazuko pouts at Chris “You still don’t know how insanely strong you are?” He makes a goofy look at Tommy “Oh I do” “Jerk.” Tommy rolls his eyes, annoyed. “Oh it’s you again” A stern voice says. They look up from their craziness to see the same guy Kazuko bumped into at the Soiree. “Hitsugi-san....” She says breathlessly, surprised. He raises his eyebrow “You remember me.” She gives him an annoyed look “How could I forget? You called me a bumbling idiot, and said I was stupid.” “You know this guy?” Chris gives Shoma a once-over. Kazuko smiles, embarrassed “Right- I bumped into him back at the Soiree.” Chris looks at Shoma, already deciding he doesn’t like him “Who are you?” “Shoma Hitsugi.” He levels Chris’s stare. Tommy gives him one of his usual no-nonsense looks “So what’s your problem with Kazuko?” Shoma looks at Kazuko “I don’t have a problem with your little friend here.” Her face flushes hotly with embarrassment and annoyance as Chris corrects Shoma in a curt tone “She’s our- cousin.” Kazuko looks at Chris with mild confusion, did he just....hesitate? Shoma looks away, “So what are your Specialties?” Kazuko offers him a smile “I’m a Robotics Specialist.” “Martial Artist” Chris says blandly “My twin brother over there, he’s a Musician.” Tommy looks up briefly, but says nothing. Shoma nods “I'm a Veterinarian. You have probably heard of me? I once raised a Parrotlet from death. I’m the greatest animal doctor this world has ever seen.” “Right.” Chris looks as him funny “Would you all perhaps like to see my new place of practice? I would suggest you put that gun away, it scares the animals.” Shoma looks at Kazuko as he speaks, but the question was directed to all three of them. She blushes slightly, but tries not to let the fluttering feeling she feels in her gut show on her face “W-we would be happy to!” She says, cringing internally at her high pitched quip. The twins give her an incredulous look but Shoma just nods “I’ll lead the way.”
Honeychain Volume 1, Chapter 4
The somber occasion was in full swing, a funeral masquerading as a ball. Specialists were walking around, followed by Sentinels, while Wardens watched from a top box, keeping keen eye on the happenings below. From somewhere inside the room, a gunshot resounded. There were screams. All around the room, people either looked more terrified or sighed with despair. Kazuko reaches out for her father’s hand but is met by thin air, Antoine gives her a look, cautioning her against it. She scans the room to find her mom and finds Rukia on the other side, inconspicuously walking alongside Antoine and Kazuko, keeping her head down and her expression stony. No one could tell how much time was passing, if it were passing at all, and how fast or slow. They all had to walk, and walk, and walk, until midnight, when impenetrable iron bars would lower, separating them all into sections which will become their new City. Families would be split, some never seeing each other again.... As she walks, Kazuko accidentally bumps into someone. She startles, looking up into fierce amber colored eyes. Their owner scowls down at her, “No apology, you fool?” She blushes profusely “I’m sorry- I’m sorry-” He rolls his eyes “You bumbling idiot, watch where you’re going.” “You know, its not nice to call people idiots- or fools.” She says in a small voice. “And who are you to tell me what to do?” He glowers. Kazuko finds her voice and in a stronger more sure tone she says “Kazuko Hagakure.” He stares at her for a few long moments, making her feel oddly self conscious, wondering if her hair looked good and if she didn’t look groggy. Finally after what seems like an eternity, he speaks. “You can call me Hitsugi. Shoma Hitsugi.” Before she could answer, a guy with wild orange and black hair and one green eye and one blue walks up, “Found a friend?” He gives Kazuko a once-over. “No, just an idiot” Shoma turns away from Kazuko. Kazuko makes an angry look at his back. The man chuckles “Don’t go around calling people idiots, Shoma. And especially not her, look at how wee and adorable she is!” Kazuko blinks at the man. Shoma shifts his weight and glances at Kazuko, but says nothing. The man smiles in a friendly way “The name’s Atsushi Hachirou. what about you, kid?” Kazuko offers him a small smile “Kazuko Hagakure.” The man seems to think for a bit “Kazuko.... that means harmonious child, right? and your family name, Hagakure, that’s the spiritual guide for a warrior.” “Oh-” She says, impressed. Shoma rolls his eyes at Atsushi “As full of useless information as always.” Atsushi rolls his eyes back “As full of moodiness and angst as always.” Then he gives Shoma a goofy smile “You should know what your name means, it means something to how you are.” As Shoma was about to respond, a large crash resounded through the room. Metal bars lowered around them, separating the room into sections as they all knew it would. People cry and scream, but Kazuko scans the crowd wildly, feeling relief settle over her as she finds they weren’t separated.
Honeychain Volume 1, Chapter 3
(Sorry for the unfinished pic i didnt get time to make it digital and i wanted to get out this chapter, also her fingers i completely messed up) The coffin-like vehicle hums down the road. There were no windows out of which anyone could see their surroundings. The quilted walls were stationed with lamp lights every other three feet or so. Antoine held tight to his girlfriend’s and his daughter’s hands. Fudo sat rigid next to his sons, Dante and Kitaro held each others hands, Kitaro reaches over to hold Chris’s hand as well. The mood in the van was somber. Some people may well be going to their own funeral. The van comes to a stop, Sentinels begin to point their guns again, ushering people out. No one was in a hurry to leave, but then again, no one wanted to find out what would happen if they were left behind. They trudge out of the van and into a long glass hall, where they’re met by a crowd of Specialists from other City’s. All dressed up, all looking tragic. They’re ushered into a large pink room that curved around so that it was like being inside a giant donut. The room was done up elegantly, far too pretty for the sinister dealings that went on inside. Tinny music-box-ballerina like music played from somewhere overhead. Sentinels ushered everyone inside, locking the doors behind them and standing menacingly. Dance or you would be shot. Walk or you would be shot. Families held tight to each other’s hands, unwilling to lose each other, but at gunpoint were forced to separate, tearfully walking around the room. Reluctantly, Rukia, Antoine, Kazuko, Fudo, Christian, Tommy, Dante, and Kitaro separate, casually walking at a distance together
Honeychain Volume 1, Chapter 2
After everyone decided to go back to their own apartments, Antoine, Rukia, and Kazuko get settled in for bed. Rukia lays down on her and Antoine’s bed and reaches out to him, “Cuddlesss”. Antoine chuckles “What Rukia wants, Rukia gets” and lays down next to her, pulling her close. Rukia smiles contently. Antoine tried to relax but found that the impending danger could do nothing but keep him on edge. “Rukia?” He asks. “Hm?” She looks up at him. He bites his bottom lip “I’m.....Afraid.” Rukia buries her head into Antoine’s chest “We’re gonna be alright, we’ll be careful”. Antoine shakes his head “Those people are cruel, Rukia. What if they lower the walls before midnight? I can’t lose you, or Kazuko, and what if something happens to the guys, or the twins?”. Rukia looks into his eyes as she kisses him softly “That’s not gonna happen babe, not this time....” “How can you be so sure?”. Rukia was about to answer him, when Kazuko calls from her room “Goodnight!” Antoine looks up “G’night babygirl!” “Night, munchkin!” Rukia calls. “She was so young the last time..... She still is....” Antione closes his eyes “She doesn’t understand the danger. That’s why I’m afraid. It would be so easy for her to be snatched away, or to become Infected, or get hurt. All I want to do is protect her... I remember how small and alone she was and I had vowed I would protect her. This is scary, Rukia.” She gazes at him, her heart aching. They woke up to guns. Sentinels looming over them menacingly, pointing their guns at them. The Sentinels couldn’t talk, they simply pointed their guns. Everyone knew what to do, and anyone who didn’t do it would simply be shot. “Mom?! Dad?!” Kazuko cries from her room, her voice dripping with worry and fear. Rukia and Antoine were being led out of their room, Antoine reaches over and takes his daughter’s hand. “Nothing bad is going to happen to you, babygirl.” Kazuko looks at him incredulously “They have guns! And they’re pointing them at us!”. Her father strokes her hair, “As long as we do what they ask, we’ll be alright, don’t worry.”. She nods, trusting him. She only had vague memory of this happening ten years prior. She remembered crying, hearing allot of yelling, and being made to wear a frilly dress. There was a large pink room, and tinny classical music. Rukia goes to their hall closet, pulling out clothes far too dressy to be worn anywhere in this day and age, it was certainly inappropriate for where they were going now. But they changed into the clothes anyway. They didn’t have a choice. Antoine in a suit, Rukia in a women’s suit, and Kazuko in a long cerulean blue gown. Escorted by the Sentinels and their guns, they were escorted out into the hall. Grouped up with Fudo, Christian, Tommy, Dante, Kitaro, and countless others, they are escorted into a large long van. It looked like a U-Haul from the outside, but all gray. The inside resembled that of either inside a coffin or the cell of an insane person. Every single person was dressed up fancily, the street looked like a procession of elegant dolls. But instead of bright smiles, they all had looks of gloom and fear. They were going to the Soiree, an event that happens every 10 years. Wardens would have them dress up and then parade them around for other Wardens to see. Why? Because they’re Specialists, the best of the best, perfect masters of their crafts. Mechanics, Doctors, Musicians, Artists, Religious Leaders and more. The Wardens owned them like pets, keeping them locked up in different Cities to study and gloat about. And every 10 years they showed them off and then switched them off. But that’s not all. There’s also a virus. The Wardens released a virus which turns people into bloodthirsty killing machines. You can get infected through bites. There’s no way to prevent the virus and no way to cure yourself once you have it.
Honeychain Volume 1, Chapter 1
Rukia goes to the fridge, yawning as she opens it and looks inside, searching for something to stuff her face with.
“Good morning mom!” Kazuko grins at her and sips her coffee.
Antoine comes up behind Rukia and hugs her, kissing her neck tenderly “How’d you sleep?”
Rukia pulls out some waffles from the fridge and puts it on the counter, turning around and hugging Antoine back “Good, cause you were there”
Antoine kisses her softly, and then whispers in her ear “The day is coming closer....”
Rukia tries not to show her nerves, giving Antoine a look “We managed to stay together every time, this time will be the same way, right?”
“There’s still the possibility.....”
“Guys, you wont believe- Oh- I’m just going to....” Kitaro runs in, excited but his face goes red at Antoine and Rukia just kissing in the kitchen. He turns around.
Rukia smiles “No its okay-”
“You’re just gonna make out infront your daughter, damn, okay” Dante strolls in.
Kazuko looks up “Im 16!”
Antoine glances at Dante “Ykno you’re right” Then he turns to Rukia, kissing her forehead “We can continue later”
“Nuuuuu I want cuddles
now”
She reaches out to him.Dante sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose “Somehow that’s actually worse....” Kazuko rolls her eyes and then goes back to sipping her coffee.“So what did you both burst into our apartment to ask, eh?” Rukia asks.Kitaro shows them his left hand, grinning. On the ring finger was a slim gold band. Dante grins and blushes, “I proposed....”Rukia squeals with excitement, gushing over the ring.“Finally! After what- 17 years?” Fudo Osaki, Rukia’s brother, walks in.“You too?” Antoine raises his eyebrows at him.“With all the noise you crazies are making, why not?” He crosses the room to Kazuko and then whispers “Tell your dad to stop bullying me”Kazuko sips her coffee “Nah.”“Wow not even for your own uncle?” Fudo feigns mock surprise. Kazuko sips her coffee “Nope.”Fudo rolls his eyes and tousles Kazuko’s curly hair. The whole family sits around the living room, a buzz of excitement going with talks about the new engagement.“I almost thought he wouldn’t....” Kitaro blushes, twisting the ring on his finger.Fudo raises his eyebrow “So you’ve been dating for 17 years but you still thought he didn’t want to spend a life together with you?”Dante pulls Kitaro into a hug “Awh, don’t worry, I love you okay?” Kitaro kisses his cheek “I know....”Tommy looks up from his tablet, where he was arranging a new music piece “So when are you getting married?” They suddenly get quiet, having not actually decided when they would have their wedding. And then they remember. It was the tenth year.Everyone else seemed to realize too, a resounding silence settling over the room. Kitaro clears his throat “We haven’t been separated before, guys. We always managed to stay together.....” he stands up and walks over to the door, looking out both ways before locking it “As long as we remember to end up in the same end of the Ring before midnight, we’ll be alright.”Christian looks down uncomfortably “We didn’t always stay together, Kitaro... We were split up and never saw her again.”Fudo’s eyes go wide at Christian, then they take on a deepset sadness, from years of suppressing this memory. Tommy gives his twin a look “You didn’t have to bring that up, Chris.”Christian closes his eyes, looking pained. Rukia’s eyes fill with tears, Dante and Kitaro look uncomfortable.Antoine tries to break the pained silence by clearing his throat but it was clear that no matter how many years went by, that memory would always be a stain of hurt on their history.
