literally one of my favorite romance tropes of all time is character a is a really notorious gang leader/well known feared ruler of some kind etc and no one dares cross them or talk back to them etc because they won’t make it out alive but character b can literally get away with saying whatever they want and everyone knows it’s because they have character a wrapped around their finger and character a is gentle with character b and everyone wouldn’t dare laying a finger on character b because then character a would literally chop their head off

as a survivor fandom makes me feel genuinely awful about myself for liking him. so much seems to be "only stupid girls like snape! i'm so glad i'm over my conditioning to like these abusive male characters!". like there can't be any other reason. they really make me doubt myself sometimes.

it’s really gross and oddly (considering the faux-feminist tone of most of the antis) sexist. it implies that since we’re women who like a toxic male character, we must only like him because we’re idiots or abuse condoners or we’re simply too uneducated and naive to like the Good Characters™ 

snape is definitely not what i would consider a role model for like… anyone. he’s nasty and brutal and a bully. but i have said it before and i’ll say it as many times as needed: that’s the point of his character and his narrative. snape doesn’t heal in the “right” way from his abuse or his bullying, but he still manages to fight his way out of the darkness to do something truly and undeniably good. he uses the hardness that his own terrible life gave him as something of a weapon - a lesser person would not have survived as snape did until the very end. a kinder person wouldn’t have survived as snape did. 

snape being an asshole and a bully and not a good person… that’s what’s so important about him for me. that he manages to do great and actually inspirational things as a terrible person. and i’m not talking about lily - i’m talking about spying on a dark lord that could kill him the moment he finds out about his treachery. i’m talking about giving his life to the fight against voldemort. i’m talking about sweating blood to make sure harry stays alive to finish the entire thing and making every sacrifice he thinks is necessary - including killing the only person who knows that he’s actually on their side - to make sure the war ends and voldemort is dead. snape dies for the wizarding world. snape does all that. and he does it even though he’s nasty and unkind and kind of a terrible human being.

as a kid, i wasn’t really abused or bullied. my thing was that i went through horrible depression and anxiety and isolation and all of that made me into someone who wasn’t good. i despaired of myself because i looked at the bad things i did and i thought i was just… not a good person. i would be petty or mean or hateful and i would think that was all i was capable of. snape was one of the characters who helped me realize that even when i’m petty or terrible or mean, i can still become something better. that light exists in me even if all i feel is dark.

i don’t know. i know a lot of fans hate snape because they view him as an abusive asshole. i think they’re wrong about the abusive part, but yeah, he is an asshole. he bullies kids and he had a really unhealthy relationship with lily and he’s petty as hell. but i needed him as a teenager and there are a lot of other people who need him too - not because they’re stuck in some delusional fantasy that he’s a good person or they’re incapable of seeing him as a toxic male character, but because they see aspects of themselves in him. because yeah, they went through something like him - abuse or bullying or isolation or self-hatred - and they need a character who shows them that even if you don’t heal in the pretty “right” way that everyone thinks you need to, you’re still capable of goodness and of love. 

and i think it’s gross of fandom to sweep that under the rug so they can feel Morally Righteous™ about hating snape and his fans. they’re not being righteous - they’re just being the kind of bullying dick they’re accusing snape of. and it makes me sad.

It’s easly to like characters who are kind, or funny, all those who display qualities that we’d like to claim for ourselves. 

It’s far more difficult to look at a character like Snape and achnowledge their humanity, acknowledge their flaws and weaknesses as well as their strenghts, and recognize the reasons why they failed as vices that we all share: greed, contempt, spite, complacency, cowardliness, and so on. 

Never let anyone tell you that you aren’t allowed to relate to fictional characters. Good authors manage to make their characters relatable, and relating to them is a sign of your own ability to empathize.

adding to this, it’s interesting that Harry names Albus after both Dumbledore and Snape. they’re kind of like each others’ mirrors: Dumbledore is a good man who has done some cruel & sketchy things, and Snape is a cruel man who has done some very selfless and wonderful things.
