Malaysia Culture Food in Johor Bahru

Hey guys!!! We are a student and undertaking Victoria University Bachelor of Business program at Sunway College Johor Bahru, Malaysia. This blog is part of the assignment for Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) subject. In this blog, we want to publicize Malaysia culture food in Johor Bahru and let the public know that Malaysia is a food heaven especially Johor Bahru. Malaysia is a rich culture of the country. The population is made up mainly Malay, Chinese and Indians thus Malaysian foods are diversity. We focus on foreign tourist especially young adults who travel to Johor Bahru, Malaysia thus we hope that we can provide some information which is useful for the foreign tourists. Johor Bahru (also called JB) is the state capital of Johor in southern Peninsular Malaysia, it just across the causeway from Singapore.

Rojak Mee (Indian Food)

The rojak mee is the rojak put some of the noodles thus the taste more like the taste of rojak. It looks like spaghetti. Although the sauces of colour look spicy, the taste is sweet. We feel that it is very special because this is our first time to eat rojak mee. The taste of rojak mee is nice and the sweet sauce has some peanut inside.

We felt disappointed because we order the normal size of rojak mee but the staff gave us the large sizes. So that, we cannot finish it as it is too many. The price is about RM6.

Telur Dadar

We order Telur Dadar as a side dish. It is too oily and salty and hard to swallow. We felt disappointed by this. The price is about RM 1.50.

Mix Veg Uttapam (Indian Food)

Uttapam look like pizza but is healthier than pizza. Uttapam topped with tomatoes, onion, chillies, capsicum or mixed vegetables. The taste of Uttapam has a little bit sour. It made of rice& lentil fermented batter. It resembles dosa, but it is quite thicker than the regular dosa.

The sauces served with coconut chutney, curry and Kua kacang. One of the team members felt that the taste of coconut chutney (white sauce)is spicy and choke. But another felt that taste is like medicine.

There are some of the types of Utappam such as chicken Uttapam, seafood Uttapam and so on. It is a good option for making in breakfast, lunch or for dinner. The price is RM 5.99.

Chapati (Indian Food)

Last time, we have introduced some of the Indian culture food in there. After that, we discovered their some foods which are the Indian culture food for you. The service of the staff is nice because we confuse that which Indian food we want to order so he recommended some food as a reference for us.

Chapati is made from the wheat flour, “atta” and water. Some of the salt and oil may be added to the dough. We thought chapati is monotonous. The touch of the Chapati like “dry” thus it is not oily. After we dip the curry and kua kacang, we all felt that the taste is amazing.

It looks like a roti canai but the taste is totally different. It is soft and has a little bit sour. Besides that, it is not too oily than the roti canai. Roti canai may let you feel greasy. The price of Chapati is only RM4.99!!! It is very cheaper and affordable.

It has some small potato inside the curry. We put the potato on the top of a small piece of Chapati and eaten it. These are the best combination.

Kua kacang

 Some of us think it is very spicy but one of the team members taste that it is not spicy. It is a good taste mixed with the chapati!!

Nasi Kak Wok (Malay Food)

10.Nasi Kak Wok is a Malay rice dish. Normally, is eaten with fried chicken, sambal, some vegetables such as a stir-fry of long beans (kacang panjang) and onions. Fried chickens have the taste of turmeric and it fragrant with a nice crisp. The rice is fluffy and the sambal is quite spicy.

Besides that, the drinks are colourful and it attracted to us to order it. The drink is called Teh Tarik Madu. The brown colour is the original taste and another is the taste of  Matcha. The taste is too sweet. We recommend you to remind them “kurang manis” when you order. Nasi Kerabu and Teh Tarik Madu is the best combination in ADS corner.

You can choose to sit inside the restaurant or outsides. We sit inside in the restaurant because there are a few people smoking outsides. There is always need to queue up at least 15 minutes before you try the Nasi Kak Wok.

Asam Pedas (Malay Food)

Asam Pedas was spicy, tangy with plenty of aromas. It is very matched with rice. Three of us eat a lot of rice and mixed with the spicy and sour sauces. Although Asam Pedas is spicy, we still continue to eat.

We eating while drinking water. The sour and spiciness of the dish make the fish taste richer which made us addicted to it. The fish is freshness and not fishy. If you have family members or friends dislike to eat spicily, there are other foods served here such as Ayam Penyet Kak Nor.

Mee Rebus (Malay/Indian food )

Mee Rebus HJ Wahid is located inside Aeon Tebrau City. It is like a hawker centre and there have approximately 10 of the stalls in there. It is quite difficult to find the seats. The staff is very nice and friendly. He also wears a cap to avoid his head drop into the food while preparing the food. It is a very good image for him. There has to sell different types of mee rebus such as mee rebus with the crispy oyster mushroom, crispy golden prawn or crispy chicken. We order the original of the mee rebus.

Mee Rebus is Malay and Indian food. It is also often called “mi kuah”. It is a noodle dish which consists of yellow noodle and served with the green chilli, boiled egg, green onion and bean sprouts. The sauce is called spicy brown gravy and has a bit spicy. We like the sauce so much!!!

When the noodles were done just right, it is very tender with a subtle firmness. The sauce very heavy and thick with a soft graininess from thoroughly boiled crushed groundnuts. No beef is used in the sauce. Besides that, the chopped coriander, green chilli pepper and half a lime gave the dish a bit of refreshing zest.

The price of this food is RM6!!! It is a bit expensive for us because the sizes of Mee Rebus is too small, we eat not enough. But, we like the taste of mee rebus and we will go there to eat again.

Nyonya Kueh

Nyonya Leaf is a restaurant which specializes in premium Nyonya kueh. It opens in Aeon Tebrau City Jusco. They have a lot of branches in Johor Bahru such as City Square shopping centre, KSL shopping centre, Aeon Shopping Centre, Komtar JBCC and so on. Therefore, you don’t worry cannot find in Johor Bahru.

 Besides that, most of the shopping centre is open in the morning until night so can go to try at any time. A lot of Malays, Chineses and Indians like to eat Nyonya kuih so it always finishes selling at night.

Kueh Pulut Tai Tai is a popular traditional dessert. It is always served with kaya or coconut egg jam that it is also called “ Kueh Kaya”. The price is RM 2.60. The glutinous rice is cook with the coconut milk and a bit salty. Therefore, it has a bit too salty. It also adds the “blue pea flowers” to the part of the rice. We love this kueh especially Kueh Kaya matched with the kaya. The kaya is not too sweet.

Kueh Talam Pandan and Golden Pumpkin Yam

The right side of the kueh is Seri Muka Pulut Hitam. It is a 2 layer pandan kueh dessert and the meaning of “talam’ is tray. The top white layer is made with the coconut milk, the taste has a slightly salty and soft. It has a lot of small red beans inside the white layer. In addition, the bottom green layer is made by the pandan juice and some alkaline water, it makes the taste has a bit sweet and chewy texture. The price is only RM1.20!!!

The right side is Golden Pumpkin Yam. It is also a 2 layer pandan kueh dessert. The top yellow layer is made with the cassava (ubi kayu), the taste has a bit sweet. The bottom white layer is made with the coconut milk. For the price it is RM1.50.

In this kind of kueh, the most popular version is a white and green layer kueh. Therefore, you must try it when you come to Johor Bahru!!! We all suggest you try the Golden Pumpkin Yam, we all like the taste.

Space is spacious and the light is bright. There can feel the Nyonya atmosphere on there. And the tables and chairs are clean.

Rojak Cucur Tepung (Malay/ Indian Food)

Today, we also introduce E&Y Restaurant and it is located in Taman Mount Austin. There is a lot of young generation people like to go there at night with their friends or family. Sometimes, we will also go there to get a dinner after we done the assignment in school.  

Rojak Cucur Tepung is one of the most popular Malay and Indian culture food. In Malaysia, there are different types of rojak. For example, Chinese rojak is a fruit rojak and the sauce is a sweet sauce with the peanut.

Rojak Cucur Tepung is consists of a base of crunchy vegetables such as cucumber, onions and jicama. And other sides dishes include boiled eggs, tofu and various kinds of fritters. Besides that, we also like the taste of goreng tepung. Goreng tepung is the main ingredient of rojak.

We like the sauce which is drenched in a sweet and spicy peanut sauce. It is similar with the satay sauce. Rojak cucur tepung is commonly sold on the street or in the Mamak stalls in Johor Bahru.

The price of this food is only RM4!!!!! It was quite cheap and affordable. Also nowadays among the tourists' must-try Rojak Cucur Tepung in E&Y restaurant when reached Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Curry Laksa (Chinese Food)

Laksa is one of the most popular Malaysia and most Malaysians love Laksa (Newman 2013). In Malaysia, there have some types of Laksa such as Laksa, Nyonya Laksa, Curry Laksa and Asam Laksa.

Curry Laksa

Curry Laksa soup has based on coconut milk and the taste of soup has a little bit spicy The noodles can choose noodle, rice vermicelli, kway teow or a combination of the two. We choose rice vermicelli as noodles. The rice vermicelli submerged in an aromatic soup and serve with prawns, omelette strips, bean curd puffs, sambal, shredded chicken, egg, clam and bean sprouts. Despite it is not being a rich soup but the spicy soup was light yet flavourful.

The shredded chicken was not dry as it had soaked up the flavourful spicy soup hence it taste that is mouthwatering.

Due to the seat is in front of the shop of subway thus there is limited seats for customers. Besides that, here is very hot because there is no any fan. We order the laksa hence we sweat while eating. Therefore, we ordered a cendol to ease hot.

Dim Sum (Chinese Food)

Restaurant Gui Yuan is a restaurant which sells many dim sum. Dim Sum is a very common food for breakfast in Malaysia. On the weekends, some of the people like to have eaten dim sum with their family. There are served others foods such as porridge, pork sausage and so on. Therefore, you are various foods for you to choose from.

Some of the staff will be holding a lot of dim sum and can direct to choose favourite dim sum. Besides that, some of them prefer order dim sum on the menu because the price is clearly displayed. The between  RM10-RM20 (per person). It is very expensive but we very enjoy to eat. The environment of Gui Yuan Restaurant is noisy and the speed of serving food was fast.

Preserved egg porridge

The taste is tasteless, dilute and only a few chips of preserved eggs.

Tea

Tea is also essential collocation together with the dim sum. There are different types of tea such as Oolong tea, Long Jing tea, and Puer Tea for you to choice. we prefer to order “Puer Tea” which helps you to release the oil. It was a bit bitter but all of us can accept.

Shrimp dumplings and turnip cake

The shrimp dumplings are nice and tender. The right side is turnip cake. It is very soft and jiggly. Besides that, the crispy caramelization on the outside really makes it stand out. 

Rice noodle roll ( chee cheong fun )

They don’t have a whole lot of flavour. They taste like plain rice noodles. The variety that comes with dried shrimp and green onions have a bit more flavour.

The popular food in the restaurant which are Shrimp Dumplings, Siu Mai, Steamed Soup Dumplings, Steamed Chicken Feet, Turnip cake, Barbecued pork bun.

Kolo Mee (Chinese Food)

A delicacy originating in Sarawak, but it is also a common delicacy in Johor. When ordering Kolo Mee, you get the option of either having your noodles with sauce of black, white (plain) or red. We order the white sauce as we wanted to try the original flavour.

People who prefer to eat spicily, you can add some spicy sauce. The price of Kolo Mee which is RM 5.50,

Kolo Mee with a generous amount of minced pork and some barbecued pork(Char Siu) on top. After being thoroughly mixed minced pork and some barbecued pork with the noodles, it made each mouthful of noodles more substantial and satisfying. Noodles have the taste of greasy but springy so we suggest do not eat it in the morning. Kolo Mee impressed me with its authentic and familiar flavours.

This coffee shop has been open for at least 20 years hence the decoration is ancient and space is spacious. The old hawker is enthusiasm and he likes to talk with customers.

Bak Kut Teh( Chinese Food)

MK Ming Kee Bak Kut Teh is a restaurant which specializes in Bak Kut Teh. Aside from their signature bak kut teh, they serve other dishes as well, such as seafood and other meats.

All of us very like Bak Kut Teh and always go to try many Bak Kut Teh in different restaurants. Bak Kut Teh is a herbal soup made from pork ribs and pork bones and seasoned with dry herbs and spices.

The Bak Kut Teh came with the dried beancurd (tau pok), beancurd sheet (tau kee), fu chuk and some green onions in the above. Besides that, we always order yau char kwai of our side dish. The pork dip the sauces which mixed with minced raw garlic, chopped red chilli and dark soy sauce is tasty but it has spicy. We like it very much!!!!

We always refill the soup to dip with the yau char kwai.  Especially eaten bak kut teh sided with a bowl of hot white rice, served with crispy yau char kueh and match with herbal soup, it is delicious!!! Tourists must-try when reached Johor Bahru.

The price of yau char kwai is only RM2!!!!!

The meat especially the pork belly was very tender. The soup of Bak Kut Teh mildly sweet flavoured with added porks. Besides that, the texture of pork is bouncy and chewy. It didn’t disappoint, as it was rich and savoury. Furthermore, the service was very good and the waitress very nice and friendly. They always have a smile on their faces.

Popiah (Chinese Food)

Restoran Tian Qing Paradise Sdn Bhd is a hawker centre in Taman Gaya. There are selling a lot of food such as Dim Sum, Nasi Lemak, Satay, Char Kway Teow and so on. There are approximately 20 stalls for you to hit on!!! Besides that, you will have spent RM15 to settle your dinner. It is very cheaper than you eat in the cafe or other restaurants. When you want to have a snack at midnight you can go there. It opens from 3pm until 230am so don’t worry you can still get the popiah after midnight. Sometimes, we will order popiah as our side dish. 

Popiah is a fresh spring roll commonly found in hawker centre and pasar malam. It filled mainly with vegetables such as cucumber, yam bean, bean curds and other ingredients such as eggs, taufu and peanut.

You can choose either spicy, sweetness or normal. We order two rolls of popiah. One is the taste is chilli and another is sweetness. We suggest adding chilli sauce to the popiah as it increases the flavour of the roll. Also, we also like the sauce with the combination of sweetness from the sweet sauce.

When you eat too greasy on other food, popiah which include the vegetables will remove the greasy feeling.

Besides that, they were handmade is the points of sale. The taste of popiah is softer and juice. It was tantalized our taste buds. If you are in a hurry popiah is the best food recommendations for you as popiah easy to make and the hawker quickie preparation the popiah. The price of two rolls popiah is only RM5!!!

Char Kway Teow(Chinese Food)

S86 Eight Six Restaurant is an open-air complex and there are many stalls that sell a variety of inexpensive food. We recommend foreign tourists should come and enjoy the environment of hawker centre and order various food to stimulate your taste bud.

Char Kway Teow which is one of the most popular cuisines among all ethnic groups in Malaysia. Char Kway Teow is ubiquitous in hawker centres. The price of the Char Kway Teow is RM5.50.

The ingredients of the Kway Teow (can choose spicy or normal) added the lard, light or dark soy sauce, white shrimp, clams, bean sprouts, leeks, and eggs.

Besides that,  Kway Teow can mix with some noodles which is shown in the picture. Char Kway Teow can choose the taste of normal or spicy according to personal preference.

I like the soy sauce which enveloping the kway teow and noodles with robust savoury flavours and slightly wet. The kway teow was soft and slightly chewy. I’m just gonna say that. We were super surprised by the taste of this dish. It is very delicious and the shrimps were nice and tender!!!

In this place, there a few cats stay around the Hawker Center. Cats will jump on the seat or on the table thus it becomes interference when eating.

Satay (Malay Food)

Restoran Tian Qing Paradise Sdn Bhd is a hawker centre in Taman Gaya. There are selling a lot of food such as Dim Sum, Nasi Lemak, Satay, Char Kway Teow and so on. There are approximately 20 stalls for you to hit on!!! Besides that, you will have spent RM15 to settle your dinner. It is very cheaper than you eat in the cafe or other restaurants. When you won't have a snack at midnight you can go there. It opens from 3pm until 2:30am so you can still get the food after midnight.

Satay is one of the foods we always like to order. Satay is usually served in chicken, pork and beef.

We ordered 10 chicken satay and the ketupat.  The cucumbers and onions as side dishes. Besides that, the cucumber can helps to offset the satay’s cancerous effect. The chicken satay is best among pork and beef as it is moist and juicy. The priced at RM0.90 per stick. Satay is seasoned and grilled skewered meat and it has barbecue flavor.

 Ketupat

Ketupat is the main sides dishes eaten with satay. For Muslims, ketupat symbolizes forgiveness and blessings (Rianti et al. 2018). The ketuput is tasteless so you can dip the satay sauce, it will engage you to have an endless aftertaste.

We like the satay sauce!!! The satay sauce has included some peanuts which was thick and fragrant and not too spicy. We have really enjoyed it and the taste of satay still stays on our mind.

For those who are driving, there are some of the parking spaces along the shop stalls. Overall, satay fulfils the desire of you for these succulent pieces of meat.

Wantan Mee (Chinese Food)

In Johor Bahru, there are more than hundred of restaurant sell mee hun kueh and noodles. But, we found and recognised one of the best mee hun kueh for you. It is located in Taman Pelangi Indah, Ulu Tiram. The name is Restoran Pang & Tan Yong Chun and it is established in the year 2016.

 Although RESTORAN PANG & TAN YONG CHUN‘s speciality is selling Mee Hoon Kueh, Wan Tan Mee also popular and the taste of Wan Tan Mee is delicious. You cannot miss when stepped into this famous restaurant. 

The noodles are made fresh daily with no colouring and preservatives inside the noddles. A bowl of dry noodles mixes their own recipe soy sauce topped with some barbecued pork (Char Siu) and sided with a bowl of wantan soup. The wantan is made of pork. The texture of the char siew is soft and it has the savoury taste.

If you like the wantan mee have spicy, you just simply add a special chilli sauce. Besides that, the chilli sauce is not too spicy and has a little bit of sweetness. The price is only RM5 thus the price was very reasonable.

Moreover, you can order the side dishes such as the fried wantan and wantan soup.

Fried wantan

This is a fried wantan which is 15 wantan in the plate and the price is RM5. It is crispy and not greasy. You can dip with the sauce of chilli and tomato. Besides that, wantan of handmade is the points of sale at this restaurant. However, it isn't sold in every day. They sometimes sell in the Sunday or Saturday.

Wantan soup

The wantan soup is the top selling in the restaurant thus you cannot miss and the price is RM5. It is selling every day and we always love to order this for our snacks. The taste is a light and crisp taste.

Cendol  (Indian Food)

It is a food truck in Taman Mount Austin. It sometimes open from 530pm-1030pm. It is established by a woman, she is called Auntie Amy. She sells Penang Laksa, Rojek, Asam Laksa, Curry Laksa and dessert. Although it is a small stall, they are a lot of people go there to order their famous food such as cendol and Curry Laksa.

Cendol is very cheaper than other desserts in the cafe. Some of the people like to have a cooling drink and dessert after dinner.  Therefore, Cendol is the best ways for you.

Cendol is a sweet iced dessert which contains coconut milk, red bean, palm sugar syrup and cendol noodles (jelly) with a green colour. This is a roadside stall and located in Taman Mount Austin. Cendol is selling at RM3 for a bowl so it was quite cheap and affordable.

Besides that, the red bean is different from the other cendol. They used kidney-shaped red bead instead of the other cendol we had at eating at other places. Best of all, the taste is not too sweet. The cendol noodles were a slight pandan green, slightly chewy while the syrup was quite okay it has been thicker or more aromatic. The ice shaving was rather coarse.

Cendol is seriously addictive and lets us order the second bowl!!!
