Vegan Taiwanese Spring Rolls / Run Bing / Popiah (潤餅)
Mum went to the hairdresser today so she was home a little late with the food. My Packed Lunch has a slice of curry fish steak, most likely red snapper and stir-fried tender pig’s liver with dried chilli.
She also bought back a few rolls of Popiah (薄饼) or 润饼 as they are known in Taiwan. Various ingredients like stewed turnip or jicama, Chinese sausage slices, julienned carrots, bean sprouts, shredded omelette, lettuce, chopped peanuts, sweet sauce etc… are wrapped into a roll with popiah skin made from wheat flour. Although usually eaten as a snack, this can also be a full meal if you take more than a roll of it.
finished a little piece of our Papa Copia 🖤
Pohpiah
Popiah also known as spring rolls are quite popular through out Malaysia. When we are hunting for food along the Jonker Night Market, we found a stall that selling popiah and we decided to stop and try for it. Popiah originated from the Fujian province in China and brought to Malaysia by the migrating Chinese back in the day.
Popiah is made by a thin paper like crepe and stuffed with various of ingredients which included some vegetables, cooked meat, eggs and peanut powder. You can choose to have a spicy flavour popiah or an original flavour popiah.
We ordered just one single original flavour popiah for RM 3.00. The popiah tasted so fresh and delicious as the combination of the vegetables and sauces are perfectly match!
This popiah stall always crowded with customers. People keep coming and ordering nonstop. However a downsides of being famous falls on its customers, they had to patiently wait. And since there is only one person is making popiah, the production rate is rather limited.
If you never tried a popiah, I definitely recommed you give it a try. You can choose the original flavour if you cannot take spicy foods. It is well worth the experience while in Jonker Night Market.
Hokkien Snack
Popiah is one of the famous Hokkien traditional food. It is very delicious because it includes a lot of fillings. Popiah wrapped with Beijing cabbage bamboo shoots, French beans, dried shrimps, turnips, mushroom, tiny slice of pork, prawns and others. It is very complicated to prepare the ingredient because all of these fillings are need to be shredded and chopped. Besides, popiah skin is also complicate to made. Normally, popiah need to takes 3-4 days from preparing until complete. Hence, it will always be prepared when all family member got together every festival.

In Southeast Asia, Popiah (薄饼) as we called it in Malaysia and Singapore is part of our Chinese cuisine. Elsewhere, they are known by different names like 润饼 in Taiwan. Popiah "skin" (薄饼皮), a soft, thin paper-like crepe or pancake made from wheat flour is used to wrap up the various ingredients. A sweet bean sauce is spread on the crepe followed by stewed turnip or jicama (known locally as bangkuang) & carrot, bean sprouts, shredded omelette and chopped peanuts.
