regarding lazzy’s condition ;
i’ve mentioned before that i take a lot of stuff from whimzy’s already existing lore over on @honnismoked by just giving it a bit more of a current-evy-writing-era refresh. however, one thing i haven’t really talked about (outside discord) is what lazzy’s condition actually is, which is an alternative form of final moment syndrome.
in the undertale: insect kingdom edition lore, this affliction was one that only the 1st level insects (the kings, queens, lords, emperors — if they were a rune holder that lead an entire grouping of bugs, essentially) could suffer due to the innate determination from the thousands of humans souls mixed with monster ones in their runes.
the runes themselves provided a method of reincarnation for their respective 1st level insect, but it also had the effect of keeping them perpetual; the oldest of the 1st levels, before death, were thousands of years old. for those that died naturally, however, they underwent a significant change:
the rapid aging of their body due to the soul effects giving out, resulting in final moment syndrome. every bit of aging that should have happened to the leader would occur all at once, eventually leading to their death.
in deltarune, however… this doesn’t happen. the runes don’t exist, and insects monsters are just monsters rather than functioning as their own sect of beings like the fae or mixed-souls. however, the same concept still is at play: a mixing of human soul and monster dust.
in lazzy’s case, this was his consumption of the sacramental tarts of his elders as well as his parents. unlike whimzy, a “child of soleil” according to the book of creation, lazzy is a “child of lune,” the being representing “the fall.”
soleil is the end and rebirth, while lune is the fall and death. much like how monsters can “fall down” before they die, lune was believed to hold that role in the cycle of life that the insect monsters of the world follow.
lazzy consumed monster dust as a being representing “the fall.” this is why he, too, “fell down” — and it’s why his illness keeps him perpetually in the coma. he faces an inverse of final moment syndrome, where his soul trait is being rewound to something greater — resilience.
an ancient trait, and one soleil could be characterized by. in the “default” ending to their dark world, he is fast-tracked straight beyond rebirth and into death; but in the good ending to their tale, he is touched once again by soleil’s grace, finally waking in his body with his childhood weakness removed at last.
