A recent paper shows that some juvenile king crabs hitch rides on wandering sea cucumbers, perhaps as a way of evading predators.
How do juvenile king crabs avoid predators on the open seafloor? Research from scientists at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary indicates they get by with a little help from wandering sea cucumbers (aka sea pigs)!

The Lybia crab is a species of small crab in the family Xanthidae. It is also referred to as Hawaiian boxer crab, pom-pom crab, cheerleader crab, mosaic boxer crab among many other nicknames. The crabs are known for their signature move of always carrying a small living sea anemone around in each of its claws, which helps them catch food and protect themselves from predators. (Source)
Hawaiian Boxer Crab.
See, I thought Crabrawler was based on coconut crabs but this makes way more sense.
The Coconut Crab has the World’s Strongest Grip
Researchers in Okinawa measured the gripping force of 29 coconut crabs, and found that strength corresponded with size. The biggest recorded crab should then have a strength of 3,300 Newtons–stronger than the bite force of any animal except alligators.
One of the researchers was pinched twice by the animals while studying them, which, until the crab decided to let go, was a very painful experience. “While it was only a few minutes, I felt eternal hell,” the researcher said. (Read more in my PBS Newshour article)
I have been pinched by several land hermit crabs (Coenobita sp.), smaller relatives of the coconut crab and THAT was painful as hell and there was no way of pulling them off without hurting myself even more. They were all smaller than a golf ball. I do not want to experience this from a coconut crab.
Definitely
In a new study published in the journal Tissue Engineering, the team shows how chitosan, when mixed with an off-the-shelf enzyme call transglutaminase (TG), effectively seals puncture wounds in pig intestines and lungs.
The next time you go in for surgery, you might come out thanking a crab. New research from the Harvard Wyss Institute shows that chitosan, which is a fancy term for crustacean goo, can be used as a biodegradable glue to heal wounds and patch surgical incisions.
