A ship - a magnificent ship - full of gay men.
And me.
Fucking hate it when I sign up to be this guy's ship surgeon and his first lieutenant recognizes me from the Devil's Sacrement. Fml. SMH my head.
Been rewatching some episodes of The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, which naturally inspired me to draw these two in a sort of that style... (tbh i think I didnt make them look off-putting enough)
*I sometimes call the books The Marvelous Misadventures of Jack (and Stephen)

Name a shrub after me. Something prickly and hard to eradicate.

Stephen felt the weight of Dil's unwinking scrutiny:
he scratched himself in silence and listened to the now violent pounding of his heart.
'Oh, oh, oh,' she cried at last, rising and placing her thin hands together like a temple-dancer. 'Oh, oh, I understand it now.' She writhed and stamped and swayed, chanting, 'Oh Krishna, Krishnaji, oh Stephen bahadur, Sivaji, oh melter of hearts - ha, ha, ha!' her mirth overcame her dancing and she fell to the ground. 'Dost thou understand?'
'Perhaps not quite as well as thou.'
'I shall explain, make clear. She is wooing thee - she wishes to see thee by night, oh shameless, ha, ha, ha! But why, when she has three husbands? Because she must have a fourth, like the Tibetans: they have four husbands, and the Frank women are very like Tibetans strange, strange ways. The three have not given her a child, so a fourth there must be, and she has chosen thee because thou art so unlike them. She was warned in a dream, no doubt: told where to find thee, so unlike the rest.'
'Wholly unlike?'
'Oh yes, yes! They are fools - it is written on their foreheads. And they are rich and thou art poor; they are young and thou art ancient; they are handsome red-faced men, and thou - most holy men are hideous, though more or less innocent.

The cello is a truly ghastly instrument. I sound like I'm trying to climb into a squirrel.
Paul Bettany as he was trying to learn the cello for his part as Stephen Maturin in the film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
locking in for stephen maturin girl summer (catching lizards and wearing cunty jackets)
this whole scene is gold but I have to pull out this part that truly highlights the way they are married. they need their private swim and gossip time!!!! bonus if there are creatures for stephen!!! adorable!!!
If you like the film Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, you should watch the great documentary about the making of it that's on youtube. They built a whole fucking ship from scratch! The cast went to Napoleonic War naval bootcamp! Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany actually learned the pieces of classical music they play in the film!
I think if filmmakers are going to spend many, many millions of dollars making a film, there should at least be a whole ass ship to show for it. No AI. No green screen. Just build a fucking ship and get hundreds of grubby men to run around on it, shouting and running each other through with swords.
While two idiots who love each other play duets.
Okay so the boyf is giving me regular updates as he makes his way through all 20 Patrick O'Brian navy books and I've finally realised that O'Brian loved creating the exact characters that people on this hell site are obsessed with.
One of the two main characters being a scrawny scraggky gay man who he cannot let be for two minutes is just so. yah. "Oh I'm bored, I'll just torture Steven for the twenty thousandth time or kill a character he's attached to or strand him on a random island, yeah, that'll make it interesting."
RIP Patrick you would have done numbers on tumblr

good thing they didnt have Grindr during the age of sail imagine coming into range of the enemy and in the tense quiet before the storm all your officers' phones go off
"Mr Pullings, hard a' larboard and silence that Grindr alert, if you please. You too, Mr Allen. And you, Mr Nagel. And you, Captain Howard. And- Really, Stephen?"
Follow up question on the wedding dresses (but different anon): would they be reused or only worn on the wedding?
Sorry, that was in the the post I must have deleted it. Yes, wedding dresses would be worn again. Fabric was very expensive at the time so except perhaps for royalty (we still have those gowns suggesting they weren't worn much), they'd be worn again.
As demonstrated in Emma 2020, the gowns in the Regency were very convertible and had removable parts. So a wedding gown would be at peak fancy, but then could be adapted to more regular use.
