Exhibition Questions
Name Honor Forbes Class HND2A Date 3/9/21
Name of exhibition Location of exhibition
Mandy Barker – Streetlevel (trongate 103)
‘Our Plastic Ocean’
How does the flyer/poster advertise the exhibition?
The poster addresses the issue of plastic pollution and how it relates to the work in the exhibition. It also gives a bit of background about the artist and the thought process.
What is the suitability of the gallery space? How is the exhibition laid out?
The layout is spacious in the sense that it gives every image its own spot so that each is viewed equally.
How has the work been mounted? Is this appropriate for the work?
Yes its very appropriate. Some images are framed with black borders to show a clear contrast between the vibrant colours, some are mounted just as they are which are slightly larger to give a clearly insight to everything captured within the image.
Who made the work?
English photographer Mandy Barker
City of Glasgow College School of Creative Industries follows a project led approach to learning and teaching. This approach reflects industry practice and informs assessment criteria within the HND Photography Course. All projects are designed to meet SQA standards.
Who did they make it for, who is the audience?
I think they made it for everyone, to show the rising pollution problem which we are all affected by.
How does it make you feel?
It makes me feel extremely worried and scared, the amount of plastic in the ocean and the constant rise is terrifying, but it makes me want to change and make a difference which im sure is what Mandy Barker wanted to get across to people, and Im sure its made people feel the exact same as it has me.
If the work has a title does it make you think about the image/s differently?
Yes as each image has a different story and affects things very differently, I feel each image was carefully titled as each image is completely different in its own way. However I feel if it wasn’t titled it would give the viewer the chance to make their own mind up about what each image entails.
How would I describe it to someone later?
An exhibition about pollution and the problem of plastic in the ocean, something I think everyone needs to educate themselves on, starting by looking at this exhibition as I feel it becomes more of a reality when you can actually see what is going on, it is extremely immersive that is really worth taking a look at.
Does the photograph make you want to ask questions, what are these questions?
Yes 100%, I ask myself how can we possibly be doing this to our earth? What and we do more to change this and if everyone seen this exhibition would it make a serious change?

Is the photograph valuable? How do you know?
Im unsure how much money the photograph is worth however it is valuable in the sense that is very educational and can teach many people about pollution and the ocean.
Is the work for sale and who might buy it?
Yes it is for sale, it could be bought by organisations that are possibly trying to reach the public to raise money for these sorts of issues?
What information is available about the artist/s?
There is information about Mandys background and her career, there is also info about her exhibitions and this one in particular.
Who organised the exhibition and who selected the work?
The work for the exhibition was selected by Angela Sheard.
Evaluation
For this brief of moving image we were asked to research adverts and short videos to inspire us to shoot our own personal videos.
I chose to go with the inspiration from the song how do you like your eggs in the morning, with clips of me cooking eggs, I felt this was a nice light choice to go with and I had a lot of fun doing different clips.
My first shoot I felt I was quite strong with the variety of shots that I took, however I had a lot of issues with the colour grading and the shakiness of my camera when shooting some clips, as I shot underneath a skylight it was very blue toned which I was not trying to achieve, I also wasn't using my tripod as much therefore there was a bit of shakiness in the clips, when editing these shots I did feel it was hard to colour them to look less blue as then the quality went down.
So I decided to reshoot with a different camera setting to avoid the blue tones keeping the video from looking so cold as I wanted to achieve a bright and fun video, in order to do this I chose the camera setting ‘shade’ so that it balanced out the colour that i was getting from the skylight and made the shots a lot more warmer toned, I also used my tripod in every shot to avoid any shakiness, I felt this improved the video as a whole aswell as each individual clip looking aesthetically pleasing.
After doing so I re-evaluated the video and decided to add some transitions as I felt some of the clips didn't flow and thee beginning and the end were a bit abrupt, therefore I added some fade transitions in order for the video to flow a bit better, this worked really well.
Overall I feel I achieved this brief quite well and shot a video that I personally thought was good and went well with the theme of the song.

I reshot some clips with less of a blue toned colour, to do this I changed the setting on my camera to ‘Shade’ so that it was a more warm tone, and I shot some other clips with a tripod so that they weren't as shaky as the last ones.
Im overall really happy with these improvements.

Edit
I think to improve Ill need to shoot another video of the eggs as when I did them the fried egg had burst and I think it would look better if it was neater looking, it looks quite messy and definitely could be done better.
Moving Image
A lot of the time when filming my moving image, I used a tripod, however some times I had to hold it in order to get the right angles which caused some shakiness. I also used the skylight above my counter in my kitchen in order to get some nice lighting on my objects. I felt this worked best when shooting the food as I didn't want really harsh light caused by artificial lights.
When editing my video I used an app called iMovie, this had some quite good features on it as I could change the colour balance, the shakiness was able to be cancelled out but it didn't help that much, and you could add your audio.

This had a variety of different creative adverts, it shoes that each advert its different in its own way, for example the colour grading in the first video was very well done and felt comforting. The third one was all about the message, it was extremely powerful.
Each one uses different methods to create different vibes depending on what they're advertising, such as different camera angles, viewpoints, each one has a different message therefore has different ways of portraying it, music has a big impact on what emotion its trying to get across.

Moving Image Story Board
For my moving image, i’m using the inspiration of the song ‘how do you like your eggs in the morning’ shooting multiple different types of eggs cooking i’m going to prepare and cook the eggs shooting multiple different shots of this. Using close up, zooms and long shots in order to achieve this video.
Structure Evaluation
With this we brief we were asked to shoot a piece of architecture that stood out to us and capture certain images including wide angle shots with perspective control and more detailed images showing more of the character of the building, i particularly enjoyed this brief however found it a bit difficult as there were a lot of restricted areas where i live and so it was a bit harder to get the particular shots we were asked, the building i shot had a wall around to which i could not enter and had a lot of trees surrounding the area, and so it was hard to capture a shot of the full building without the trees getting in the way however i still think it looked nice with the trees, but this is something i would definitely consider if i were to ever shoot a piece of architecture again as a lot of places are restricted, so to avoid this i would do more research on how to gain access or find somewhere that isn't as restrictive.
I chose a good day to shoot, using both the weather app and the light calculator to calculate when the best time of day to shoot was and to get the best lighting in the specific area that i was shooting.
Overall i feel i met the requirements of the brief however i couldve done more to get better pictures, perhaps even done a second shoot so i had more to choose from as my photos were quite limited.

Camera Movements
Zoom
zooming gives the impression of moving closer or further away from the subject. It can be used effectively to magnify a certain focus point in the frame, but other moves such as a dolly, are a more natural way to show movement.
Pan
Panning is when the camera is moved horizontally from one side to another on a central axis. This is a rotating movement in which the camera’s position remains in place, but the direction that it faces changes. It can be used to follow a moving character or to fit more into a frame, for example, panning across a landscape to create a sense of place.
Dolly
A dolly shot is when the entire camera is mounted on a track and is moved towards or away from a subject. Unlike a zoom shot, the world around the subject moves with the camera. A dolly gives the illusion that the viewer is walking towards the subject and can be a great way of creating a sense of intimacy between them.
Composition
Long Shot
A long shot includes a subject’s entire body and a large proportion of the surrounding area. This is also sometimes called a wide shot. It still gives the viewer a sense of location, but it also establishes the subject within a particular scene.

Structure Plans
There’s very few buildings in my area however there are still a few lovely old structures that I think are worth photographing for this brief.
(Not my Images) This is St. john’s tower, it’s fairly close to me and I think it’s so beautiful and always catches such great light and there is nothing in the way of it. I think this building has a lot of character and can be taken in various amounts of viewpoints to capture that.
It gets fairly good sunlight as it’s very close to the beach, I use the app sun calculator to know where it’s going to be and the best time to shoot.
Gave the time lapse a go on the sunset, thought it was quite cool with the waves and the clouds moving although should’ve kept it going to capture a change in the colour of the sky
Structure Research
I really love this image, between the structure of the building and the reflection of the other buildings within the image, I feel it has a lot of detail in the whole image, as you can see each room and each window has a different tone and colour in it. The viewpoint i thought was quite clever aswell as it shows the full length of the building giving us a sense of how tall the building is without taking away from the shape of it.
This is another really interesting image, firstly the shape of the building is so cool and unique, which i feel is why the photographer captured it, I wanted to understand why the photographer chose this viewpoint but I realised that it was to capture the curves and points that show the peculiar shape of the building, and the details of the carefully places windows. I also felt the time of day it was shot was clever as it contrasted well with the lit windows which made it stand out more.
I really loved this image, the building is almost hidden however with the time of day, you can cleverly see the reflection of the clouds and detail of the building itself, the lighting is my favourite part of this image as it buildings infant are quite dark whereas the building the photographer clearly wanted us to focus on is well lit.
This image is another clear example of an abstract shot, the photographer did a really good job at showing the perfect symmetry of the building, with the well lit reflection on the left side and the darker side being a bit darker. I also like the viewpoint the photographer chose as it looks as though both of the structures are together however the taller one is a bit further away from the one infront.
I think this image is beautiful, between the the shapes of the building and the careful choice to include the tree above which creates a lovely contrast between the dark of the trees, the brightness of the sky and the mid tones of the building itself.
I just love this image, the colours in it I think are the main part of this image which is mostly to do with the time of day that it was taken, the golden colours of the structure work really well with the tones of the sky in the background which I think make it stand out really nicely, I also feel the viewpoint was a clever way of capturing the image as it has the full structure in the image however we still are unfamiliar with how the shape of it works.
This image is very well lit, I do think if the sky was a bit darker the contrast would've been a lot nicer however the lighting of the tunnel is so pretty it really captured my attention as i was looking at it, between that and the lovely shaped building in the back and the different tones created by the reflection of the windows really bring this image together.
I love the symmetry of this image, between obviously the building and the trees on either side I just think it looks really nice, I also think the gloomy day really adds to it as the building is quite bright with the yellow and white colours it contrasts really well which i think the photographer was trying to do to bring out the colours more.
This image shows that lighting really is everything, its a very simple image yet the lighting really brings out a lot of detail of the front of the structure, and the dark door in the centre almost makes me want to see what is behind it, it gives of that sense of curiosity. I also think the bright building contrast really well with the darker look of the sky bringing out the shapes of the structure.
This was quite similar to the other image with the darker tones contrasting with the lighter ones however taken from a different viewpoint which gives off a completely different perspective of the building itself, it gives you more insight to the details and different parts of the building, i think the way it has been taken is extremely clever.
