My work offers diagnostic consultations and foundational remedies, cleansing, protection, and road opening rooted in traditional cultural study. I am a messenger and a guide, not a doctor or a fixer. I provide the tools, but you hold the power to move your own life...

Hoodoo is a pragmatic, survival-based folk culture from the American South. It is not Wicca or ceremonial European magic, and it is not a "vibes-based" aesthetic. In my Hoodoo and Rootwork, I do not claim to "save" people. I provide the tools for survival and energy movement that are part of a collective shared memory and work.

As Spiritual Practitioner, I am NOT:

A medical doctor, psychiatrist, or licensed counselor.

A Wiccan.

An initiated Orisha priestess or member of a formal priesthood.

A "fixer" responsible for the client’s life choices or outcomes.

But I AM:

An interpreter of patterns (spiritual, environmental, and ancestral).

A student and practitioner of a specific African American cultural lineage (Hoodoo).

A guide who provides practical and discreet tools for real problems.

A "Messenger" who delivers information for my clients to act upon.

Ode To Mugwort

Ugh...I did a show last week and kinda overstepped my boundaries with my ancestors.

I got sassy because I willfully misconstrued their role in what I do. So I apologized during the show and afterwards gave them an offering...

I originally promised them cornbread and forgot to grab some when we went food shopping...

so lo and behold during my session with them, I ran to put it on the list instead of acting like I would remember again and in doing so, thought to look in the cabinet to see if we already had a box...BINGO! Right next to the blueberry muffin box...was Jiffy! All of my grandparents used Jiffy brand corn muffin mix...

So today, I made cornbread to give to them as an offering and extra apology.

Now about the show...I overstepped and made a HUGE error. I asked if they had a message for my audience (small audience, only 2 people who are regular attendees) and if it was okay. They said no...

Okay, they answered so that's that right?

Nooooope, I tried to be cute and ask them a using a different method and still got No...

Okay, they said No ..so that's that right?

Noooope

I tried asking them if they would let me use a different deck than the one I was going to use...and that's when that sarcastic biting humor came out. They started messing with me and giving me halfway answers.

It was at that moment that I knew I messed up. They aren't on camera. I AM. They aren't performers to do what I ask. They are there for ME. They had already looked out for me earlier in the show and then I tried to play cute.

So they got rum, and candy and TV...and today they get cornbread 😔

I also went to my notebook and online and revamped my show to not include MY ancestors (only before and after as thanks as I usually do) and to still be able to offer solutions and guidance as I have always been doing with the tools and birth right of survival skills and intuition and ability to see what's needed that was passed down through them to me...and to my children.

Cleansing and protection work is not about fear. We do it as maintenance.

Just like washing your hands, cleaning your home, or taking a deep breath after a stressful day, spiritual cleansing helps clear stagnant energy while protection helps reinforce your boundaries.

For beginners, this doesn't have to be complicated. A simple candle, a spiritual bath, prayer, Psalms, Florida Water, salt, or even intentional floor washes can become part of a grounded routine. The goal is not perfection. It's consistency and awareness.

Many people wait until life feels chaotic before they begin cleansing work. But regular spiritual hygiene can help you feel calmer, clearer, and more centered before things pile up!

Start simple.

Learn slowly.

Pay attention to how your space, mood, and mind respond over time.

Ancestor Petition

Found a piece of chert in Virginia the other day so I decided to do a little connecting, thanking, and petitioning of my ancestors.

My far back ancestors come from North Carolina and Virginia so being here was a very special occasion that I didn't want to pass up.

A little mugwort, a little rue and a little Abre Camino...then set the chert on my petition.

I picked the color candles for my family and protection. I need them to be safe and have good fortune.

I was interrupted a couple of times during my focus, but I think our ancestors understand that life does that (especially life with children). It's like when my daughter calls me and half the conversation is with me and the other is with my grandkids lol...I am just happy she called ❤️

Talk to your ancestors even if you can't set aside full blocks of uninterrupted time...

I placed the ashes and salt into an envelope which I plan to bury at home. (No plants will be harmed. I have a dedicated area for burying things)

Does the moon and Hoodoo have any connection?

In my practice, it does, but maybe not in others.

The moon holds meaning to me. It is the gentle light that illuminates answers. I am not a harsh words person. It activates the obstinacy in me 😂

Snipped the sage yesterday to prepare for all the Spring vibes.

I offered the clippings to my ancestors altar space to cleanse the area of Winter's cold sleeping energy...

I gotta get things done and venerate like a beast before the mosquito season hits and I'm out of commission until Fall 🍁😞

What does it look like to have a Hoodoo consultation?

That's a good question...

Generally it's kinda like going to the doctor. They ask what the issue is, they clarify what the issue is. They break it down into what is ailing you. They give you a "prescription" and it's up to you to do the work.

The thing I like most about the Hoodoo culture is that it is proactive. You can't set it and forget it or it will be forgotten.

Some people say cast this spell and then wait for the results..

Hoodoo says do this action for this amount of time and manifest these results.

I find it amusing when people do any type of work and if it doesn't give them the results they want...it's all fake.

If you go to the doctor and they diagnose you, give you meds, tell you how long to take them and come back to see how you are doing...and you go back and tell the doctor you don't feel much better or you feel worse, most people don't automatically start telling the doctor they are a quack. They are more willing to try again with another approach.

If a Hoodoo practitioner tells you something for your spirit, your would, your situation...it doesn't mean they will be right every time the first time. They know what they do for what you need in their area of knowledge....just like a doctor knows what you need in their area of expertise.

Shop around just like you would do for your medical doctor. Talk to them about what they do and their policies etc. No one should be offended and not want to help you if you have questions regarding your care....

AI and Hoodoo

I recently saw a posting in which all of the animations and graphics were made with AI. It was very...odd...for me to see a whole account with AI videos of grandmas and elders talking about hoodoo traditions. I know the person who created it put a lot of work into it (AI videos aren't easy to make when the person is doing more than just putting in a genetic prompt. I've seen some really crazy realistic video...you can always tell though), but it didn't feel right feeding all that information into an AI generator and seeing it that way.

Was the information accurate? As far as I could gather and also based on the comments from the videos. They also create infographics using AI (which aren't as polished as the videos), but again, pretty accurate as far as I could see.

As much as I love integration and seeing my people in spaces where they normally are not allowed...I feel like this is one space, that maybe we shouldn't embrace as deeply in that aspect.

AI is woven into EVERYTHING now. It has been for quite some time, but we didn't really see it in the forefront like it is now. There is probably nothing techwise that you use (if it's connected to the Internet) that doesn't have AI behind it in some way. Even a Google search will give you an AI summary first.

I had my run of using AI for anything, then I realized that it has a very specific way of thinking and responding. You can almost tell when someone has copy and pasted an AI response because just like a person, it has a certain way of communicating.

I don't want everything I read to be AI generated. I don't want my culture to become AI generated. I understand it is a new tool that we will have to learn how to regulate and adjust to. I understand that it gives people access to information and solutions that they may not have been able to afford (time or money). I hope that we find new technology to reduce it's harm on our environment. I hope we educate our youth to be more responsible with AI than our generation might be.

But for now, I would rather not see an computer AI generated person telling me about blue tinted bottles on trees..it's a little freaky even if I do love sci-fi...
