A few weeks ago, a young girl saw this rare Argonaut - often called a Paper Nautilus - washed onto the beach at East Cape Conran. She told locals about it and Myke Mollard went and picked up the little dude then released her back into deeper water. Hopefully survived; such a classic āanimalā of nature. Enjoy! Photo and words by Andrew Barnes.Ā
Wow there are so many comments claiming this is just āan octopus hiding in a shellā and ānot real.ā No, this really is an animal called an Argonaut or paper nautilus. It is a type of octopus, but the female, who is MUCH larger than the male, secretes a nautilus-like shell from a papery substance. Why it looks so much like a nautilus shell is a subject of debate, since it is not produced by the same mechanisms at all.
This is a cg model by David Bodenstein, but itās the clearest depiction around of the two specialized, fan-like tentacles that actually secrete the āpaperā and form the shell.
She can leave the shell if she needs to, but those same two tentacles are usually gripping it tightly. Not only does it offer protection, but it serves as her egg case after she finds a mate. Like most octopuses, she dies after her babies hatch, so she does carry the shell around for the remainder of her life.
She typically swims with her mouth and suckers facing outward, the tips of her tentacles folded behind her into the shell so the whole animal looks like a weird ball of cephalopod.
The male has a tiny baby-like (neotenous?) form, but since octopuses deliver sperm through a single specialized arm, his has to be MUCH longer and larger than all his other arms in order to mate, and itās usually kept in a weird little bag of skin.
All argonauts of any sex have a wild habit of grabbing on to the top of a jellyfish and either dragging it around with them or riding it, depending on how much bigger the jellyfish is. This not only protects the cephalopod with the jellyās stinging tentacles, but helps it catch more food; thereās evidence that they use their beak to chew a tiny hole through the jellyās cap and suck out their stomach contents. Itās kind of like being able to shift into a āparasiticā mode as they please, and kind of like using another animal as both a vehicle and eating utencil.
Hereās a little male with a jellyfish of his own!!!

Goatface: A Comedy Special
For some of you in the notes not getting this, from someone who also waits for the race of a person that did something fucked up:
If a minority did it, the we ALL did it as far as society is confirmed. If a black person shot someone, in the minds of some people ALL black people are violent. If an attack referred to as a terrorist attack is committed by a Muslim, ALL Muslim people are terrorists.
If a white/Caucasian person did it, THEY are violent. They immediately get the ālone wolfā treatment and as a result, as far as society is concerned, their actions are their own, not due to their race. You might be reading this and thinking āwell I donāt see it that way, why would I blame everyone in a group for a crime one committed?ā and if not, good for you, but we both know that these attitudes ARE an issue.
People really in here being upset over comedic takes on race and american society when thereās a whole gif of a man making pitas rain?
