The Darkest Sunrise by Aly Martinez
My rating: 5 of 5 stars This review is for both books in this duet - The Darkest Sunrise and the Brightest Sunset - by Aly Martinez. I have read several of her books and I am always drawn to how emotional her stories are and how much she pulls your heart along on the journey. Inevitably, she makes me cry and while I hate it, I also love it. That catharsis that hurts and yet feels like a release. She is a truly talented author. This duet is about a woman (Charlotte) who has been suffering for 10 years because her infant son was kidnapped and never found. She finally finds a man (Porter) who can help her find herself in her darkness, in large part because he has spent a lot of time in that darkness too. His wife killed herself 3 years earlier by driving her car off a bridge into a lake - with her two children in the car with her. While Porter was able to rescue the children, his wife died and he has been struggling with his pain and anger since that day. I promise no spoilers, but there is a big turn of events that threatens to pull them irreparably apart, but in then end, Charlotte, Porter and the rest of their families are able to find their lightness through the darkness. In the midst of what could have been an overly dark, heavy and sad story, there is humor and places where you can catch a deep breath. Because of the way Ms. Martinez writes, those spots of air are so unbelievably precious. An incredible 2-book series that I highly recommend. View all my reviews

The Raging Ones by Krista Ritchie My rating: 5 of 5 stars Wow, just wow. I am a huge fan of Krista and Becca Ritchie so I wasn't sure what to expect with this book which is a bit of a genre change. Honestly, I was reading it to see if my middle school daughter would like it. I just finished and can't wait to pass it her way! I got this book as an ARC from NetGalley and was enraptured as I read. It starts a little slow, as there is some building with the characters and you slowly get pieces of their past revealed (particularly Court who is quite an enigma). I love the relationship between the three. Not at all a love triangle, but two boys that deeply care and love each other, despite their differences and faults and Franny, who has not had anyone care for her and learns the true friendship love given to her from Court and Mykal. It has a post-apocalyptic feel, an icy white planet, violet smoke and a bit technologically backwards in a steam-punk sort of way. Midway through the book, as the relationships build and you learn more, the book catches speed and I just couldn't put it down. It is a two book story, so I can't wait to get the second book. A definite must read and I feel very comfortable with it as a YA (age ~12 and up). View all my reviews

Book review - Addicted series
By Becca and Krista Ritchie
🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀 5 out of 5 rocks
This review is going to cover the 5 books in the Addicted Series (Addicted To You, Ricochet, Addicted for Now, Thrive, Addicted After all) as well as the 4 Calloway sisters books (Kiss the Sky, Hothouse Flower, Fuel the Fire, Long way down) and the Epilogue book – Some Kind of Perfect.
Yes, that is a lot of books in one review. No, you are not getting a detailed retelling of the stories – if you wanted that, why bother to read a book! But what you are going to get is my opinion, FWIW.
These series tell the story of 6 people. The main characters of Lily Calloway and Loren Hale, their addictions, their love and their growth. As the story builds you are pulled into the remaining four main characters: Lily’s sisters Rose and Daisy, Loren’s half-brother Ryke and their friend Connor. Here is what these books so darn good – the Ritchie sisters write unbelievably realistic, engaging, interesting and attractive characters. They are multi-dimensional with strengths, faults and quirks and the more you read about them the more you find yourself wanting to know more. Just as the books start with the theme of addiction, you will become addicted to these characters.
These books are, in essence, love stories. The love between the sisters and brothers shows the strength you can get from a strong family connection. The couples also each display such unique and special passion. Whether it is emotional passion so strong it is like an addiction, a physical need to be together or that mental stimulation only your true match can provide, the love connects with the reader on so many levels. You find yourself rooting for them, yelling at them, smiling with them and sometimes fanning yourself as your temperature rises.
I read the entire series straight-through. At the end of each book, I couldn’t wait to pick up the next and keep going. The authors have started another series (Like Us) which is about the now adult children of the core 6 characters from the Addicted series (trust me – a review is forthcoming). I also love how the authors have really cultivated the characters external to the books. Check out mood boards on their Pinterest page to get visuals on the characters and follow the characters Twitter feeds (yes the characters all have feeds and it is a lot of fun to see the back-and forth between them).
If you are looking for a great series of books with wonderful characters, fantastic dialogue, humor, passion, action, tension and love – sit back, relax and dive in.
I tore myself away from the safe comfort of certainties through my love for truth - and truth rewarded me.

Book review: True to the Highlander by Barbara Longley
🍀🍀🍀🍀 4 out of 5 rocks
I have been on a highlander kick lately and stumbled on this series in part because it came with narration and I love listening rule I drive to work. I especially love the Scottish brogue on the audio. Brrr!
Simple plot overview: Alethia (aka True) works at a renaissance fair and is sent through time back to 15th century Scotland. Lucky for her she was already dressed for the part. She is found by the earl's son, romance and action ensue (I promise no spoilers).
I liked the historical accuracy which was relatively on point and the period speech wasn't overdone so as to make it hard to read. Chemistry was good. I give it 3 out of 5 on the saucy scale, but I like that it was a good story and not just a vehicle for smutty scenes. Hey, not that I don't love good smut, but it needs a story, ya know?!
There are a total of 4 books in the series, with related characters. It would seem r books with similar time traveling premises would feel repetitive and there are a few times when it does, but over all it was an enjoyable, entertaining and fun read.
