Late Night Thoughts
NOTE: The following takes place on Nagito's first night on the island!
i have artblock so i dressed him up for funsies
*While the conversation is anything but normal, at least the scenery is somewhat. Waved crashing against the shore in a vibrant blue against the similarly-colored sky make for a truly beautiful scene. Kazuichi, for a brief moment, thought he could feel okay*
*He fucking KNEW he was right though, that they were all doomed, when clouds started to swirl in the sky, turning their surroundings a charcoal gray*
“Nagito.. what’s happening?”
@kaz-md
*Nagito watched in real time when the sunny sky suddenly shifted into the stormy gray without any sort of warning. His eyes were drawn to their so-called "teacher", panicking almost as much (Actually probably more..) than his fellow classmates around him who looked more confused than anything else.* *Even the warm water had become chilly, and he drew his legs out of it.*
"My guess is as good as yours." *He said. Even he was subtly surprised. The weather shift was something he hadn't anticipated at all. He, of course, thought they were all going to die (or possible worse) on that island. Didn't think the island itself would give a blaring warning of their predicament. And before his pink haired classmate could say anything, childlike chimes you'd hear in a kids tv show seemed to reverberate around, drawing everyone to what looked like a tv screen pinned to a tree. Huh. He hadn't even noticed that before.*
*The screen was full of static, and there was a silhouette of something he couldn't quite make out. An equally as fuzzy voice rang out, telling them to go to the park found by his classmates earlier. The screen then shut off abruptly, leaving his classmates looking disoriented, Usami (As the rabbit.. creature, had called herself) was attempting to make sense of the situation. As if she wasn't in on it, he dully noted to himself.*
*Kazuichi noticed three things in quick succession:
This bear looked to be about the same model and make of whatever machine Usami is.
The “Usami” is question has repeatedly been called “Monomi” in the long-winded evil shpeal that this new teacher-of-sorts (“Monokuma”) continued to rant through.
They’re apparently in a killing game now.*
“A what??? Like- like from Battle Royale?”
*Kazuichi turned to stare at his taller compatriot, looking at the thin white hairs in the boys arm in favor of eye-contact*
*He just hums idly in agreeance. Ah. This was about what he guessed would happen. Although, the way it was summed up made him feel like there were some things left out. To get off the island, all you had to do was kill someone? Already setting a high bar, yes, but that was all? You'd skip on home, scott free? No, from the cabins and etc, something else was at a foot. Either this "Monokuma" didn't believe they'd kill anyone (at least, not for a long while with the lodgings set up and all) or there was a catch.*
*Either way, he first went ahead and observed his fellow "killing game participants" (Were they even classmates to begin with? Or was that some odd lie? He'd think about that later). Fuyuhiko looked ready to pop a vessel, Pekoyama was sending him worried glances.
Hajime was muttering something like "just my luck" or along the lines, Nagito dismissed it as him being pessimistic. Tsumiki was shaking and sobbing, Teruteru looked like he had mentally clocked out. There was various different reaction, some even looked to not believe it at all (The Saionji girl in specific), to which he couldn't fault them.*
*He adjusted the dark jacket around him; he'd love to change out of swimwear but perhaps later was a better time to do that.*
"Gundham said the same thing." *He finally verbalized, nodding his head in Gundham's direction to get his point across. He was muttering something about battle royales himself, given he was a gamer, it wasn't massively surprising his first thought would be about the digital world.*
*Despite it all, Kazuichi giggles*
“Not Fortnite! I mean the movie, ya know, the schlocky one from the 2000s?”
*Kazuichi sighs then, remembering where he is*
“This is just, a VERY confusing setup… I mean, would anybody actually kill someone? Is anyone here strong enough too? I guess that Mahimi- Mahiru? Mahiru, is. Nidai seems strong, but doesn’t look like the type to try, neither does Akane… also- if I stumble across someone, it’s my duty as a doctor to heal them. If they do heal by my hand, what would that make me? An accomplice? A- a cockblock?”
"I don't think anyone here would be up to killing someone else." *He said. He left off the part where he meant currently. CURRENTLY, he didn't believe so. But people can turn cruel under the right circumstances. Everyone is capable of murder, but they don't. Whether it be due to law enforcement or ethics, something is keeping people from killing. There was definitely no law on the island, and the only thing holding people back would be just their morals. And they're meant to trust each other to abide by their moral code? As if.*
*But why mention that to Kazuichi? From what he learned (in the little time they've known each other), is that he is, mentally, weak. If he keeps telling him all the bad possibilities, it could lead him to getting himself killed. Or the possibly worse of option, being the one doing the killing.*
*However, he snapped out of his thoughts from the last couple of sentences, staring for a moment before speaking again.*
"I.. don't believe that's how that word is worked." *He said, almost blankly before clearing his throat.*
"Ah, if you do stumble across an injured person, make sure to alert the group first and foremost." *He said, leaning forward a little. The black and white bear has seemed to have disappeared into thin air while he was talking to the other, leave the group huddled in the park.*
*As Kazuichi was about to respond - in a huff, to be clear, for SURELY he used that world perfectly okay! - the ‘class’ so to speak erupted in a loud chatter*
“Alert the group first and foremost? That’s not in my oaths man, if I think keeping someone alive means I have to stay there to stop the bleeding or keep them still, I HAVE to stay.”
*Kazuichi knows, logically, this is dumb. The reason a doctor follows an oath is because if they don’t, their license gets taken away. Then they can’t help anyone else. Then they’ve broken their oath twice, in a way. But here, on an island made to turn children into murder machines through fear and desperation, laws don’t apply. If they did, that freakazoid would probably be laughing his annoying little laugh as handcuffs wrapped around his paws.
Kazuichi can almost HEAR it too! “Puhuhu! Take me out to dinna’ first, why don’cha?”
What a creep*
“Anyway, what should we do now? Suns starting to set, so it’s probably dinner time, but we should like- ration food or.. something, right?”
*As much as he’d been trained on how to heal wounds in life-or-death scenarios, they never taught him much ABOUT said scenarios. He’s starting to think he should’ve paid less attention in pathology and more attention in first-response*
*He was close to firing off all the various reasons on why being alone, even with someone who is injured, may NOT be ideal in this situation. But whatever, he'll just have to buddy up with someone on the island (and hopefully not get backstabbed, figuratively or physically) and have them play guardian angel for the nurse. He was smart when it came to his stuff, but everything else? He seemed to be lacking a little.*
"Food. Yeah, we should probably find that market place." *He said, eyes going about. There were three people who seemed to know where that was. The foul-mouthed girl with pigtails was out, he was sure he could deal with her quips but Kazuichi?? Not so much.*
*Then there was Hajime, who seemed to be carrying baggage with him that Nagito wasn't sure he wanted to get too readily involved with. Luckily, the third and final person seemed to be relatively friendly and wouldn't later prove to be an issue (he hoped).* *Akane Owari, a girl in with a fox mask adorning the side of her head, was talking rather enthusiastically with Nekomaru.*
"Owari, may I take a moment of your time?" *He said, inserting himself politely into their situation. As he thought, the girl didn't look particularly disturbed by his interruption.*
*After talking about wanting to visit the market for food, she seemed to readily agree, even proposing they brought back enough for everyone. Ah, so that's the sort of character she was. He nodded, and she led them off to what he could only assume was "Rocketpunch Market".*
*As the group made their way over, Kazuichi predictable fell into a spat with Hiyoko*
“Look at you, pink hair and pronouns, nice lingerie! You know, your body’s a fucking temple, and I bet you haven’t been treating it like that, sanding your teeth down to disgusting nubs!”
“W-well- you’re ugly! You look like lolibait that no-one would wanna get baited by!”
“You’d be LUCKY to get a shred of my well kempt body, and you’re even LUCKIER to got get paid by the second for my time! Any time spend with you is time surely coaching you, you pathetic waste of a medical degree.”
“You- you!”
*Hajime, not usually the type to butt in, tried and quickly failed to disperse their squabbling, but a quick glare from Chiaki quieted them both down (mostly, Hiyoko still grumbled here and there)*
*Nagito noted the little glare. For a softer looking girl like Nanami, she sure did have a commanding presence. More importantly, he made sure to do a quick glance at Kazuichi to make sure he was sulking all too much. Kazuichi was comparable to a soak animal in the musician's eyes. It wasn't like he felt particularly attached to him, but he did feel obligated to check in with him.*
*While the pair quieted down, he heard the gymnast girl who wore colors almost blindingly bright, snicker to herself over their spat.*
*Besides Saionji picking a couple other fights (short lived due to Nanami), they made it to the market in one piece.*
*Nagito walked about, it had a lot more than just food which would be very useful for them. Although the food options were mostly of junk food and ramen cups, it was better than nothing. He picked up a large bag of chips and a cup of ramen, which had the monochrome-colored bear on the label. The bear was also on the chip bag's label. Did it make these or something? It made him a little wary, but he supposed it wouldn't have made this a free for all killing game if it was planning to just kill the group itself.*
*After grabbing that, he decided he'd accompany Kazuichi in whatever they planned to do in the market. He fell just a step behind them, shoulders back and staring dead at the back of the smaller's head.*
*Kazuichi stared at the food warily for about a second and a half before his stomach growled in warning*
“Fuck, it feels like I haven’t eaten in YEARS. Not like I can remember the date of course, everything’s still so foggy… even so, we should probably dig in right??”
*Kazuichi opened the chip bag with a -POP- before digging into his (very unhealthy, for a doctor! There’s at least 7 grams of trans fat in this thing…) meal*
“You want some? You should eat! Fevers don’t get better without any fuel… speaking of, what’re your symptoms right now? You look okay enough, but I don’t have a frame of reference for how you were before coming here, and that in itself is a HUGE stressor! Also, why does that blond flatass hate me so much?!”
*He waved his own chip bag about as if to signal he had more than enough for himself, popping his own bag open and cautiously taking a bite. Seeing as he didn't immediately burst into flames, he ate the chips with less caution now.*
"Symptoms?" *He said, before thinking about it for a moment.*
"Slight headache, and just generally aching all about." *He said, before popping another chip in his mouth. This didn't taste too bad. Besides that, he was used to always having one foot in the grave (or at least a hospital bed), so as long as he wasn't vomiting or passed out, he couldn't bring himself to care too much about a potential fever.*
"I'm okay though, you should worry about yourself before concerning yourself with other people." *He said. Before humming in response to their final exasperated question.*
"I don't believe it's only you in particular she doesn't like. She doesn't seem to be much of a people person." *He said. Well, besides maybe Pekoyama. They seemed to at least be on respecting terms. She also seemed to like Tsumiki a lot, although, it seemed to be more because she was easy to pick on. He wouldn't voice out that Kazuichi made himself just as easy to pick on and that the blondie could see that as well from how she jumped on the opportunity to pick a fight with him.*
*Kazuichi sighs with a huff but lets it go*
“So… if anyone IS getting murdered first, who do ya think it’s gonna be? We have to start thinking about that I guess, right? Protect the weaker people? I’m very nervous for Tsumiki, she seems kinda anxious.. kinda like me! He”
*Kazuichi has seemingly decided to take the entirely opposite approach to Nagito, aiming to befriend the weaker of the 16 people rather than the stronger ones for the sake of his oath. Kazuichi might be the only genuinely altruistic doctor out there. At what COST though?*
“Hey, if you do make it out of here alive, what’re you gonna do? This is probably good song material!”
*He blinked. The boy sure adapted to the situation quick. Whether the entire reality of the weight of being put in a kill or be killed game hadn’t hit him or he had already desensitized himself to the truth, Nagito wasn’t sure.*
“That’s a fair guess. If I had to place my bets on who would go first, it’d be someone unlikable. Or rather, had garnered the hatred of the wrong person.” *He said, briefly glancing at the coach, she was currently downing gummy bears while going back and forth with Fuyuhiko, who looked to be just a hair away from socking the girl in the face. He can’t say he’d be shocked if Saionji ended up dead.*
*Protecting the weak? Did they really have the right to be worrying about anyone but themselves at the moment? Caring about people is nice, but those sorts of people also become walking red targets. He decided not to comment on that, moving onto the last comment the other made.*
“Huh. That’s true.” *He said, although, he wasn’t sure if he’d want to write a song about something like this. Perhaps star in a documentary that interviewed him as a survivor. That'd certainly promote him. Although, crafting a song about such an experience might result in potential backlash from the public. Yeah, he was good on that.*
*Kazuichi rubs his eyes, exhaustion slowly creeping into his body*
“The heat mixed with all of this has me beat, so I’m probably just going to head to the cabins… you okay, Nagito?”
*Kazuichi stares, impossibly pink eyes making contact with Nagitos pale ones. They both try not to think about it. All of it*
“Hey… if nobody kills each other, are we really stuck here forever? Whoever’s doing this would get bored wouldn’t they? …would they kill us all?”
*That certainly was a thought. He can't imagine whoever was behind it killing them all so thoughtlessly. No doubt this took a lot of time to set up, given they had a whole island to themself along with accommodations and buildings set up, along with all sorts of supplies. And potential weapons, he noted.*
"I'm alright." *He said, giving the other a polite smile, before looking past him and at the sunny beach. The clouds from before had dissipated completely, not a single trace of them in the clear blue sky up above.*
"Cabins sound like a good idea." *He said, everyone seemed to be either loitering about the market or engaging in conversation. Now that they know all of whom occupied the island, he felt content for the most part. He took the leading role once more, Kazuichi seemed to have a tendency to walk just a step behind him. The walk, for the most part, was silent. It was odd, not even a singular bird in sight. Where could they possibly be?*
*Kazuichi starts to hum as they walk, taking a similar notice to the lack of animals*
“Ya know, I’m no island expert, but there should be some animals around here, right? Like at least a snake or something. If they were all gone or whatever, then this is some next level shit! Or hey, if we do find an animal, maybe Tsumiki-san can tell us where we are? Because animals got to be native from somewhere, right?”
*Kazuichi nods to himself, it surely makes sense. These kidnappers seem very orchestrated, but they can’t be THAT good, right?
…..right?*
*That was.. actually a decent idea. Tsumiki would probably have the best idea out of anyone else on the whole animal situation. He'd have to ask her later.*
"Yeah. It's best we ask her about it." *He said. Because it was odd, more than odd. Unless they've just gotten lucky to not encounter a wild animal yet, he wasn't sure what to make of it.*
*He cut his own thoughts off as they approached the cabins. He took silent note of the small group of three sitting next to what looked to be a pool. Huh, he hadn't noticed that earlier. The group consisted of the blonde girl Kazuichi had taken to earlier, Mioda and Gundham. The two girls seemed to be animatedly conversing, while the gamer tapped away at his console, sparing the pair a glance every once in a while.*
*He also noticed Teruteru hiding behind a tree a little ways away. He was biting at his fingernails, looking upon the group with envy. He didn't.. possibly think he was well hidden, did he?*
*Kazuichi erupted in a blush at the sight of Sonia, nearly drooling as he leered at her*
“She’s so cute in her swimsuit… what I would give to be with her..”
*His happiness tampers quickly at the sight of Gundham and Teruteru*
“Ugh, those two again, I get Sonia’s popular but c’mon, why would she talk to Gundham? He’s insane!”
*Ignoring the hypocritical statement he himself just made, Kazuichi stares at Teruteru*
“There’s something off about that kid…”
*Nagito cocked an eyebrow at the odd comment from the nurse, watched in real time how he back like an animal when spotting the blondie. He gave her a glance but didn't let his eyes linger. Again, she was pretty. Still, he couldn't understand what allure she had in bringing 3 guys to their knees so early on. Huh. He took note of that ability of her's, before speaking, leaning back on the mailbox behind him.*
"But you won't talk to her." *He said, head tilting to one side. If he was so taken by her, it'd make most sense to pursue that interest and talk to them, would it not? He talked to the girl himself for a brief moment; she isn't particularly hard to talk too. Incredibly friendly, similar to Owari. That was the impression he got, at least.*
"Insane.." *He muttered. That must've been coming from a place of envy. Gundham certainly was a unique individual but was overall quite reasonable and seemed to be on the quieter side. Where did Kazuichi get crazy from? Nagito wasn't sure himself..*
*He followed the smaller's eyes to Teruteru. His initial impression of him was just how.. ahem. How he lacked any sort of usefulness, to be blunt. Everyone was ultimates, Teruteru admitted to being a mere reserve course student. Sure, he stood among them, but in the long run, he can only imagine him being dead weight. Putting that aside though, he did look awfully weird. Not only was he hiding (badly at that) but was practically fuming over the scene. For what reason? He wouldn't know.*
"The sentiment is shared." *He said. He drew his eyes up, and lo and behold, his hiding place was almost directly in front of Nagito's cabin. He hoped the nail biter wouldn't attempt to talk to him when he inevitably has to head over.*
“Gah, of COURSE I won’t talk to her! I mean, w-what would I say? Miss Sonia is way out of my league anyway…” *he sighs as his shoulders drop pitifully*
*Shooing off the last of his puppy love for the day, Kazuichi and Nagito make their way back to the cabins, but before they go in, Kazuichi stares at them. The cabin orders are arranged seemingly at random, paid no mind to any alphabetical arrangement at all*
“What gives? There’s no order to any of these. Do you think there’s like a secret pre-existing killing order on these? Or is our kidnapper too lazy to order us from A to Z?”
*Kazuichi sighs in relief - internally - at the fact that the cabins happen to not be gendered either*
“Could our kidnapper predict something like that?” *He muttered. That seemed highly unlikely. He could only assumed it was randomized, but he’d keep note of it just in case. He pushed it to the back of his mind.*
“It’s probably random.” *He said. In a play of what he could only assume to be luck, his Kazuich’s cabin were in the same cluster. That’d prove to be convenient in locating him. The other two within their cluster were Nekomaru and Hiyoko, for better or for worse.*
“It’s best to call it day, I believe. It doesn’t seem anything else incredibly important.” *He said. Everyone seemed to be spread out now. He assumed if something significant were to happen, one of the more leader-ish of his classmates would come around and tell them.*
*Kazuichi shifts, biting his fingernails*
“Wait, but if we go to sleep, what if someone kills us?! I mean, no way they would, right? We’ve only been here a day! Hehe… hmm….”
*He sighs then, exhausted*
“And who would even have enough energy from that. I mean, I dunno about you, but-“ *he yawns for a beat or so* “-I’m beat!”
*Kazuichi rubs his eyes* “What if one of the cabins has a trap or something? I feel like we should both check each of our cabins together, one cabin at a time, so that we know we won’t like- blow up, or something.”
*He thought for a moment before nodding slowly. It didn’t hurt to check out another person’s cabin. Did they all have the same layout? Or was the inside different for everyone’s?*
*Traps, he assumed those weren’t set up. Given their so called “headmaster” wanted them to kill each other, traps would defeat the purpose completely.*
“I do think that’s a good idea.” *He said, trailing to Kazuichi’s cabin. He’d rather go to the other’s first. He already knew what was in his own, of course. Given they had to get dressed earlier.*
*Kazuichi cautiously steps into his cabin, it looks about the same as before when he changed. That was good, at least. Bed where a bed should be, bathroom oh-so-tiny, floor very… wood-ful. Yep. It’s a cabin. Kazuichi feels kind of dumb for presuming it to be anything else*
“So… guess I’m kind of a worrywart, huh? Sorry about that,” *he scratches his cheek with a tanned hand*
*He didn’t respond immediately, clearly taking it all in. It was almost exactly the same as his own. That was good to know, the cabins weren’t especially personalized to each person.*
“Ah, no worries.” *He said with a polite smile, still taking in a couple of details. Like the change of clothes, similar to his own, weren’t wide in variety and almost the exact same as what they arrived in at the island. He hadn’t checked out his own bathroom. He could only hope it was at least at satisfactory level. By looking at his classmate’s, the worry seemed unwarranted.*
“It’s the same as mine, for the record.“ *He said, filling the other in on his own cabin situation. He could fill in spaces that all the cabins probably looked the same. It did make him wonder why cabin were assigned though. If they were all the exact same on the inside, couldn’t they have sorted it out themself? Was it for the convenience of their kidnapper? He could only wonder.*
*With a sigh of relief, Kazuichi plops down and falls over on his, admittedly very thin and decidedly uncomfy, bed, stretching out his limbs to splay in an almost starfish-like position*
*Kazuichi yawns once again, rubbing closed eyes that wrinkle long, black eyelashes beneath his hand*
“So… I’ll see you in the morning? I hope?”
*Kazuichi realistically knows that nobody is going to be killing anyone tonight, but his heart still glazes over with the feeling that this COULD be his first and last day with Nagito*
"You will." *He said with certainty. More because he doubted anyone would attempt murder on the first day, given the mixture of how strung up everyone is and worn out? Not ideal at all. Of course, the possibility exists, he just can't imagine it being plausible.*
*And he bid his goodbye, closing the other's door behind him as he left and made it to his own cabin, sinking into the uncomfortable mattress. He'd have to get used to it.*
*He couldn't imagine they'd be leaving anytime soon.*

@kaz-md
"Food. Yeah, we should probably find that market place." *He said, eyes going about. There were three people who seemed to know where that was. The foul-mouthed girl with pigtails was out, he was sure he could deal with her quips but Kazuichi?? Not so much.*

@kaz-md
Before the Storm
NOTE: The following takes place in chapter one, before the motive reveal!

@kaz-md
Mahiru, is.
@kaz-md

@kaz-md
@kaz-md
