Reasons I like subtitles:
1. I can see how people’s names and the cities and the countries are spelled.
2. I don’t miss any words, so everything they say makes sense.
3. I get to know what background noises and conversations are.
4. The descriptions of the noises people make are freaking awesome. Ex: splutter, grunt, chuckles.
5. I can see who says what.
6. I don’t have to have the volume super loud so I can hear the dialogue, and I don’t blow my eardrums out because the ambient noises and music is SO FREAKING LOUD.
I freaking love subtitles.
7. when watching Teen Titans I noticed every time Raven casts magic they subtitle the chant differently even though it’s the same three words and that’s hilarious
Hey guys!
I’m a black artist and mostly do concept work and character design.
I consume a lot of indie and self-published media, and I keep noticing some not great trends from what I assume are well-intentioned artists. I figure the best way to help is to educate, so
Lets get into racist character design!
Before I start this post, here is a disclaimer:

First thing we’re gonna do is go over features. I see a lot of artists say that black people “don’t work” in their style, so using picrews I’ll create a badly drawn black person, and then a properly drawn one in the same style:
Using this picrew:
“But wait!” I can hear you saying, “That’s not the same hairstyle!” And you’re right, it’s not. But the reason for that is that afro hair does not and will not move or fall in the same way as straighter hair. In some cases, these hairstyles can be imitated with braids or locs though, like the example below.
Another example, using this picrew:
Also, don’t be afraid to push it farther and make them darker with curlier hair and fuller features.
Now with this picrew:
Next, let’s talk character lineups. You can do black characters with weird and unusual features. You can do black characters that have dyed hair or light eyes. But if all your black characters look unusual to the point that none of them resemble a black person you’d likely encounter in real life, that’s when it definitely becomes an issue. Or even worse, your black character is very unusual looking and is the only black character??? Do not do that.
Some character line up examples, using this picrew:
Last thing! I’m a huge supporter of the natural hair movement and it really baffles me that people seem to struggle to give black characters interesting hairstyles because there’s honestly SO much you can do with afro hair.
With this in mind, I used those same 3 picrews to make some collages of really cool hairstyles with black hair.
little note too about black hair/eyes: don’t be afraid of depicting black (as in, the color) hair and dark eyes. esp if you let nb characters have natural hair and eye colors and even wax poetic about how beautiful blonde hair or green eyes are. i promise, we know. you wanna really be subversive? you don’t need to give your black protagonist white hair or red eyes. it’s actually more unique to talk about natural blk features positively
At this point, I’m only watching this just to study the animation…it almost looks like clay sometimes, or even like the characters are models of stretched rubber. Otherwise, this movie is just written for 11 year olds
The whole franchise is such a weird thing. It was made just to be an Adam Sandler animated IP, but it didn’t matter it was Adam Sandler anyway because he’s just doing the dracula voice a million people can do and nobody who liked these movies cared that it was him. Some never even realized. Most of the older “fandom” it has are just people who think Mavis is their waifu. The animation is only good because Genndy Tartakovsky got attached to it and had to teach a roomful of cg animators all the principles of cartooning from scratch.
It has been successful enough for four movies and a series, and Genndy’s influence on it has slowly but surely actually leaked out to improve the visuals of the whole industry, but I don’t think there’s hardly anyone who counts anything “Hotel Transylvania” as their actual favorite animated media and it’s extremely easy to forget it exists as soon as you’re not looking at it.
The animation genuinely is fun to see in motion. The willingness to not always be 100% on model all the time, but rather break the models to sell a pose or expression and to be more cartoony is refreshing.
Genndy basically found that cg animators had been trained to treat CG characters like live action actors, constrained by the same physics. They’d been taught as if their job was to imitate normal reality and it just hadn’t even crossed their minds to consider stretching, squashing, or smearing their animations and poses!
He’d do drawings like these in the storyboards, then the CG would come back without any exaggeration at all. Picture a real guy trying to do the pose on the left as best as he could for a selfie, and that’s what the animators were doing with the models.
So he’d have to take everyone aside and be like “these are not real people, these are cartoons, you can break them!!” He helped them learn from scratch the rules of stylization and exaggeration that 2-d animators had always relied on, and when they got hired onto new movies from there they took those principles with them and helped make this whole industry look a little better.
I have a NEW FAVORITE THING and it’s this ballad!

If you like this, you might also like ‘Sovay’ (Roud # 7, Laws N21). I like the Pentangle version.
Basically, a young woman dresses up as a highwayman and holds up her lover. She successfully robs him (takes his purse and his watch, IIRC) but when she demands the ring she gave him he says he’d rather die than give up the ring his beloved gave him. Later, out of her disguise, Sovay admits the trick she pulled and returns his possessions. Guy asks what she’d have done if he’d given up the ring too, and she states very clearly ‘listen buster, if you’d given that ring up I would have shot you without hesitation so jot that down’.
It’s not openly stated, but given his general lack of surprise I feel like he knew Sovay was Like This before now, just not quite how MUCH Like This she in fact is.
