The suitors when Penelope says sheโs still not finished Odysseusโ funeral shroud even though sheโs been working on it for three years straight
How Black people are (de)valued at TV networks
This is about to be lengthy AF yet important.
During Mara Brock Akilโs interview on The Breakfast Club, alongside her lead actors for her newest show,ย Love Is__, she broke down how โBlack sitcoms and seriesโ are only โvaluedโ to draw in money for networks who havenโt had a vast pulling power, before they cancel our shows to bring inย โWhite shows and sitcoms,โ which they invest marketing into.
โLetโs talk real on this. Weโre talking about value in this industry, in this country, and in this world. [โฆ]
โLetโs go back to the โ90s. If you really think about it, although it was a really great timeโromantic, hopeful, inspirationalโthe tech industry was starting to open up, the whole [school-to-prison] pipeline monetization. There was money flowing. The interesting thing is corporate America, at that time, starting to realize, โOh, we can monetize black culture!โ So our music really took off, our fashion. Our shows were used, in my opinion, because sitcoms were the least expensive to produce content to put on the air to open up new channels. Our product was used to launch UPN and CW and even Fox.
โI was [a writer] at [the sitcom] South Central. South Central was on at Fox and then as soon as they got football, we lost South Central. In Living Color started to taper off. It was no longer. We werenโt needed.
โEven when the CW came, as soon as we hold the audience, then here comes 90210ย and they get all the money, the marketing and we get nothing. But we were holding it down with noโFor Girlfriends and The Game there was no marketing budgetโฆ And not until we got to BET. I will give BET the credit. They had to market but it was also a time of a Internet, which was a whole different beast at that time of promotion. But my first marketing campaign, like legitimately so, was at BETโฆ
โI used to write so many letters to the head of the network asking for a marketing plan, pitching my ideas. Most of that show was built upon on the publicity side, which is more of a hustle. But literally spending dollars on billboards, advertisement, commercialโฆthere was barely any budget for Girlfriends and The Game.
โIโm really appreciative, especially to Black women, because they recognized it first. When Black women love, we love strong, hard and long. They loved us and they spread the word. Thatโs how it stayed on the air.โ
You can watch the whole interview here.
Black sitcoms/series are what have kept a number of networks afloat from the past to the present. Theyโre lucrative. The high numbers for our shows have always been there. Once weโre considered disposable in order to free up space for a โWhite showโ to roll in or thereโs a disagreement between the network and the showโs creators, we get tossed.ย
Case in point:ย A Different World drew in 25 million throughout their six seasons on NBC before being canceled because of their Rodney King episode:
Back in the 90s, sitcomsย Martinย andย Living Single (the blueprint for Friends), and the hour-long police drama series,ย New York Undercover, used to draw in huge numbers on Thursday nights for FOX. There was no official reason put out as to why Martin was canceled in 1997 (despite the sexual harassment allegation at the time), and the other two were canceled the following year.ย
My guess for New York Undercover is that FOX wasnโt feeling the showโs leads contract holdout, stalling production, and demanding to be paid what they felt they rightfully deserved.ย It explains why Eddie Torres was killed off that upcoming season (season 3), creating the downfall of the showโs direction. Hereโs an LA Times article from 1996:
The stars of Foxโs โNew York Undercoverโ were back on the beat Thursday, ending a contract holdout that briefly delayed production on the police drama. Actors Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo didnโt report to work on Monday to begin shooting the programโs third season.
Universal Television, which produces the show, and executive producer Dick Wolf, played hardball in dealing with the pairโs demands, which, according to Wolf, included $75,000 per episode for one of the actors plus more creative input, โa gym and a star trailer and better food.โ
That salary is estimated to be about three times what the stars make currently. DeLorenzo also wanted assurances that he would be allowed to direct episodes of the series. The matter was resolved late Wednesday, Wolf said, reporting that the pair returned to work โunder the terms and conditions of their original agreement.โ
In addition to issuing a harshly worded statement calling such public demands โa virusโ in the entertainment industry, Wolf threatened to write the actors out of the show. Universal also filed a $1.2-million suit against them alleging breach of contract, maintaining that the delays were costing the production company $60,000 per day.
Observers think the โUndercoverโ stars may have been emboldened to hold out by the much-publicized salary dispute involving NBCโs โFriends,โ whose six cast members are each seeking raises to more than $100,000 per episode.
Source
Mmm hmm. The Friends cast got $100,000 per episode, which was later upped to $1 million per episode.ย In syndication, the cast makes $20 million each in residuals each year.ย The cast of Living Single also had a walkout.ย
Erika Alexander who plays Maxine Shaw revealed their reasoning and dished on how much they were paid duringย her interview withย The Breakfast Club:
โLiving Single was originally called Friends. We were originallyย called My Girlsย when we first did our pilot and it didnโt test well. So they came down, we were now filming the actual series and one of the executives had a whole list of names, and he read them out. โLiving Single, Friends blah blah blah.โ And they chose Living Single for us and then the next year they created Friends. The same peopleโWe were both at Warner Brothers. We were on the ranch lot and [Friends] was on the big lot. We called the ranch the ghetto lot because we had nothing on that lot. We actually had no air conditioning or heat. We had a walkout because we you know our craft service table was basically rice with Tabasco sauce and Ritz crackers.ย
โAt the end of our run, we were being paid a lot less and people say โWell you had a smaller market share.โ I say โCompared to what?โ If you think about how much they made [off Living Single] paying so little and how much they made in syndication all around the world all these years.
โ[The cast of Friends got] $2.5 million [each] to [the cast ofย Living Single]ย $55,000 per episode [each]. Every week. We didnโt get marketingโThere were a lot of things in place to keep the hold down and make you not feel as valuable. Iโm sure if they looked at it, and how much they made versus what they put in, Iโm sure weโre on par if not way beyond what they made.โ
FOX is something else. Not to mention that FOX had a desire to make New York Undercoverย โwhiterโ as revealed here, which explains the cast shakeup, but thatโs another topicโฆย
Fast forward. All of this reminds me of how Nicole Beharie was treated on the FOX series, Sleepy Hollow. (Not necessarily a โBlack showโ but it had a Black lead.)
She was the lead character, the face of the show before being killed off in season 3. In the following season, the show unveiled a heavily white cast and it was canceled that next year. Ironic, huhโฆ
Remember Taraji P. Hensonโs excellent portrayal as Detective Carter, one of the main characters in Person of Interest?ย
Mmm hmm. Yep. You guessed it. She too was killed off in season 3 (before the white rollout) and the show started to take a nose dive. It was canceled by season 5. Not to mention, during the promo for the show before it premiered, there was controversy around the show because Taraji had tweeted: โWOW!!!! TV Guide is NOT including me on the cover with my cast membersโฆI am the female lead of a 3 member cast and Iโm not included on the cover!!!!!! Do you see the shit I have to deal with in this businessโฆ..I cram to understand!!!!โ They only wanted the two white guys on it.
Rewind. In the late 90s, the budding networks, UPN and the WB, which both launched in 1995, were viewed asย โBlack channelsโ because thatโs where all the Black sitcoms lived at that time. But as usualโฆย Smart Guy and The Wayans Bros brought in numbers for The WB, but they were both canceled by 1999.ย
Moeshaย andย In the Houseย (which had been picked up after being canceled by NBC),ย brought in numbers for UPN before beingโฆYep, canceled.
Hell, I bet some of yโall didnโt know that The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was actually canceled TWICEย by NBC.
Yep. One of the most popular sitcoms of all-time with the most quotable theme song of all-time was canceled twice.ย Granted, in 1996, Will Smith was transitioning from the small screen to the big screen after the huge success of Bad Boys andย Independence Day. So the network decided to cancel the it after the face of the show was parting ways. Hereโs an article from the LA Times from 1996:
With the final episode of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Airย airing tonight, Smithโs show is one of the rare programs that weathered NBCโs struggling yearsโbefore Jay Leno was beating David Letterman and ERย and Friendsย were household names. A testament to the showโs wide-ranging popularity is the fact that during its six-year run, โFreshโ has never been moved from its original Monday slot at 8 p.m.
Because Smith has gone from being a novelty rapper to a budding film starโwith the 1995 hit Bad Boys and the likely summer blockbuster Independence Dayโhe decided this season would be the seriesโ last and that it was time for the show and actors to move on.
Source
However, the first cancelation was uncalled for.
After NBC canceled Fresh Prince in its fourth season, the finale had Smithโs character heading back to Philadelphia. After fan outcry, however, NBC decided to bring the show back; its fifth season opens with an NBC executive pulling Smith into a van to drive him back to California, saying โItโs called the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, not The Fresh Prince of Philadelphia.โ Ultimately, the show had six seasons.
Source
You know it was from the โWhite fan outcry.โ Letโs be honest, Black people donโt have that kind of pulling power nor do they care about our outcry.ย ย
Now look at TV today. FOX needs Lee Danielsโย Empireย and Starโฆfor nowโฆย
The CW canceledย Girlfriendsย in 2008, and pushed Everybody Hates Chris and The Game to Friday nights (which is considered the โdeath slotsโ in tv) before canceling them the following year. Ten years later, the CW is reminiscing on the huge viewership and the coins those shows drew in for their network.ย
Well, well,ย well. Looky, looky. Tryna get that old thing backโฆ
The CW needs Mara Brock Akilโs show,ย Black Lightingโฆfor nowโฆ.
Nowโฆit explains the shakeups that have been going on recently with blackish, the showโs creator, Kenya Barris, and the showโs network, ABC. Notice the pattern. Will it be renewed next year?โฆ
Reminds me of what happened to NBCโs hit show, at the time, The Carmichael Show. Too many disagreements that the showโs creator left and the show was axed from the networkโฆย
i still canโt afford top surgery
If you have a child and they are creeped out by a nephew or older brother touching them or looking at them a certain way, you need to have a serious talk with that person and keep them the hell away from your child. Donโt minimize it or tell your kid to hug them anyway, that kid is picking up danger signals they donโt even understand yet. But so many families will tell that kid they are being a brat.
thankyou
A quick note- this applies to female relatives as well. One of my aunts ignores my little brotherโs requests not to hug or kiss him (he has aspergers and doesnโt like physical contact with people he is not very close with). I have repeatedly placed myself between the two of them and had to tell her to back off and stop trying to โdesensitizeโ him. Whether or not there are โdanger signals,โ it is not okay for adults to invalidate a child or teenโs request for boundaries. We need to teach children now, when they are young, that they can say no to these things and that other people can too.

i feel like this is important for black travelers who are driving long distances:
but what are some sundown towns do yโall know of? like if someone were to do a cross-country trip, what are some towns they should absolutely not go through?
Small towns in south ga and noth fla
Ga: Jonesboro, tifton, Albany, valdosta, Macon
Fla: Gainesville, Perry, Madison, Marianna, Quincy, Jefferson county, hell I wouldnโt stop in Tallahassee either
Texas: Vidor, Orange, Deep Santa Fe
Texas: Jasper & Lumberton
Iโm from Albany and recently the police beat up a young brother for no reason. They were attempting to say he had drugs but he of course had nothing.
If you go to Stone Mountain and find yourself on the trails close to night leave because they still have active Klan rallys up there
I was driving through north Florida during the day and I felt uncomfortable
The Negro Motorist Green Book was guide for black folk traveling in the 60s. Itโs gives a breakdown of sundown towns. 50 years later, Iโm sure itโs still relevant.
I feel like the Deep South is just a gamble.
Ohioโฆjust in general
Central Florida, especially the little towns. If you must stop to pump gas, pay away the pump and get outta there asap
Once you get out of St. Louis county start being careful.
St. Genevieve, MO is definitely a no go for me if Iโm traveling south.
If traveling in Louisiana stay away from small town with low speeding zones. If you are to go into those please drive the speed limit and donโt stop for gas. You will get a ticket for tint of your car. If your military I pay you drive the speed limit and donโt have a military tag. Get gas in the daylight.
Iโm glad youโre looking out for your bros, at the same time itโs a pathetic look at the country in the 21st century.
Saving this and reblogging for myself and my tumblr fam stay safe love you guys (also check the notes for comments on more cities to avoid)
Ohio: Hartville, Sebring, Salem are all in NE Ohio. Had the worst experience of my life in Hartville.
Tennessee: Polk county and the ones surrounding it probably arenโt good either
Not just Gainesville, FL but pretty much all of Alachua County. Especially Waldo. Especially especially Trenton and Newberry.

the real tragedy is that sirius black died before he could find out about the embarrassing nickname snape gave himself as a teenager

All my fellow PVD Rhody peeps, letโs do this.
Insatiable | Official Trailer
There is an entire list of reasons why this show should be avoided like the fatphobic piece of garbage it clearly is, but letโs start with the name.
The idea that fat girls are โinsatiableโ is a rape culture trope.
In the time of Me Too, fat women are still not believed and our pain is a joke to thin people.
This character is brutally assaulted FOR BEING FAT to the point where her jaw has to be wired shutโ and the people who made this show think that is โzanyโ. When I spent my entire childhood being abused and assaulted for being a fat girlโ I didnโt find it fucking zany.
Number 2-
Donโt watch media that use fat suits. Period.
Fat suits never look right on thin people and I have come to believe that is a feature, not a bug.
Fat suits exist in order to make us look inhuman and monstrous.
Fat suits perpetuate the idea that for a fat person to become permanently thin, all they need to do is take off that suit of fat they are wearing and- ta da! Thinness and power are yours for the taking.
Number 3-
You can be literally anything you want to be AND ALSO BE FAT.
You can be a fat princess, a fat jock or a fat brain.
Fuck you, Insatiable.
Number 4-
This show promotes eating disorders.
To teens.
Number 5-
Thin people need to stop stealing the stories of fat people.
I donโt care what thin people think about fat people, and I ESPECIALLY am tired of seeing the pain of fat people appropriated by thin people to pretend to be body posi to each other, while making things worse for actual fat people.
I am really sick of catching death threats from neo-Nazis to make space for fat people, only for thin people to rush in and steal it, ignore fat people and shove us out.
Stop stealing our stories. Thin people STEAL OUR PAIN and turn it into jokes. And tired, lazy jokes too.
โ
@teenvogue is promoting this garbage, which is APPALLING.
The next time you want to thank fake woke Teen Vogue for being progressive for teensโ just remember. They donโt give a single fuck about FAT teens, and this isnโt the first time theyโve been fatphobic either.
Let @netflix know what you think too.
ok today im going to make a post about one of my history faves: Gladys Bently
She was a musician during The Harlem Renaissance and very very very VERY openly a lesbian. She was known to flirt with women in the audience during her performances. She even claimed to have had a wife (although i cant find any details on that) and was quoted as saying โIt seems I was born different. At least, I always thought soโฆ.From the time I can remember anything, even as I was toddling, I never wanted a man to touch me.โ Unfortunately as far as I can tell none of her explicitly gay music was ever recorded Sadly, She eventually had to claim she was no longer attracted to women for her own personal safety, although to quote this article โThese desperate attempts to survive do not diminish her previous accomplishments.โ In a world where it feels like the only gay people in media are thin, flat chested, white people, I think we should all take a sec to remember this wonderful lesbian
