I was going to clean our dorm, but then I got high.

Man what the hell? I have a project due

Jean was fucking hammered, but even that might be an understatement in regard to the present circumstance. But what could he say, college students were made to let loose with their newfound freedom they were allowed, and Jean knew full well the minute he held his acceptance letter he was going to take advantage of that.

“Lighten up dude, a little clothes here and there ain’t gonna stop you from doin’ your stupid project,” Jean muttered, eyes bloodshot between drifts of consciousness.

Eren scowled at his roommate, angry at his childishness. Eren wanted to let loose, but his art always came first.

“The problem isn’t the clothes, Jean. My problem is that you’re annoying when you’re not sober. It’s difficult to work when I have to deal with you in this state.” Eren rolled his eyes as he spoke, he hated being an adult, but he wouldn’t let Jean ruin his art.

With maximum effort, Jean managed to scramble himself from his place at the edge of the couch onto his, admittedly wobbly, feet. “Eren. Ereeeen.” He stumbled in the other’s direction and slouched his body up against his side, relying on Eren’s hold to keep them stable.

“You could stop being so… so prissy and join me,” With a suggestive eyebrow waggle, he followed his proposition with, “A party of two, whaddya say?”

Eren was taken aback by Jean’s stoned comments. Admittedly, he didn’t know exactly what he meant. Jean’s eyebrows seemed so, suggestive that Eren almost couldn’t resist. 

“Jean, what exactly are you suggesting here?”

"Personally I just wanted a drinking buddy, even if said person can be an annoying prick sometimes, buuut..." Jean allowed himself to fall backwards and landed into an uncomfortable position on the sofa. "I'm open to other suggestions too."

With that being said, Jean extended an arm to the void of a floor and patted among the varies of empty pizza boxes and dirty clothes until his fingers latched around the glass bottle of vodka. He held it up in the air as an offering.

Three hours of written notes and occasional napping had passed, dismissal from the class finally within reach. Jean’s books and supplies had gathered all into his mess of a bag as he groggily waved goodbye to a few classmates within the room. He couldn’t fathom how he managed to make it through four classes today with minimal periods of rest without collapsing on spot, but at least now he was given the opportunity to go home and sleep through the entirety of the following day. Though the world works in mysterious ways, and those plans would reveal to be unattainable in the coming times. 

“Seeya Prof.,” The boy stammered in the moment he began forcing himself through the exit. Though before wholly taking his leave, an announcement began on the PA. 

“You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.’’ A simple statement from the administration; the building had been snowed in, we were unable to leave at this time, etc, etc… He turned his attention to his surrounding area, appearing that only he and Professor Smith were lodged into this particular room. Uncomfortable silence filled his ears. “What now?” He questioned, mostly to himself, once several minutes had passed.

Teaching was boring sometimes, but when it came to the fourth hour of the day, he couldn’t help but wonder how students were still tired and napping in his class. Halfway through, he just resorted to assigning them bookwork and leaving them alone the rest of the class period. He was getting quite tired of them, as well. He browsed through some things on his computer and occasionally sent glances to the class, seeing the stupidity that was going on. He rolled his eyes and almost huffed in relief that the bell had finally rang out. He saw several students file out, except for one.

The PA sounded, and Erwin had immediately regretted every single life choice and decision. His eyes shut tight and he rubbed his head in frustration. He was going to agree with the statement Jean had just said, but his voice faltered. He just remembered what situation he was in. And that he actually had to filter his words more this time and actually be in control of himself. 

In a lack of better terms, this wasn’t going to go well.

He was confused as to how the other students had filed out of the room much quicker than the latter standing in front of his door, but here they were. All the other students had been in other classrooms by now, and there was no way no one else would come in the room. The fifth hour of the day was his prep. He acted as though nothing had happened, though. That would be for the best, right? He just simply stacked some papers and ignored that Jean was there. At least, for now.

Jean found himself frozen in place, one hand on the silver handle for what felt like an eternity. More silence, that was simply fantastic. It was bad enough he was practically cornered inside the building having nowhere else to go, but now the boy had to stand before his Professor with the resemblance of a deer captured in the headlights of a car, absolutely no knowledge of a followup for conversation. With deep contemplation on what course he should allow himself to take, he decided to initiate movement and relaxed into a chair that lingered a safe distance away from the very head of the room. 

Of course, it did take a great deal of concentration to focus on any amount of homework that had been assigned given the circumstances. This may as well be classified among the most awkward and uncomfortable situations he has found himself in to date. There was no particular reason he should feel so stiff around his Professor, but there was something about his energy, and the way he spoke that sent chills up his entire body. 

He obnoxiously cleared his throat, wondering solemnly if he should speak. “Some crazy weather out there now, am I right?’’ 

Why the fuck was he asking about the weather, could he seriously not come up with a better topic? Too late to take back now, he supposes.

Erwin simply uncapped his pen and got his hands on a rather large pile of papers that were sitting near his computer. A pile was always there that he always ignored and left for the worst circumstances. Worst circumstances being if Hanji came to talk to him or when a student would try to strike up a friendly conversation with him. And now was one of those times. He stuck the cap on the opposite side of the utensil and started looking over the students’ assignments with an abysmal face. Sometimes he didn’t even know how they got these answers.

He was nervous when Jean had his hand stuck to the door. He felt even better when he moved to the back of the room, him being the one to initiate a safe distance from each other. And to that, Erwin was grateful. He couldn’t really go anywhere, because frankly, his desk is the only place he would be at. He would look very out of place in a chair around the room. He didn’t look at Jean when he moved to the back, but simply stopped his intricate movements of grading.

His eyebrow quirked up in disbelief at the topic Jean was trying to pull up. The atmosphere was awkward, and with Erwin’s inept skills of conversation, he probably would have said the same thing. A thick silence covered the air, and Erwin gulped from the icy calm present in the room. He decided it would be useless to keep quiet and to keep control, so he just decided to finally speak up.

“Out of all things you could be talking about, you chose the weather? Amateurish,” Erwin says, not looking up from his pile of disappointing assignments.

Offense was what he took from the response above all else. Saying that he thought of himself as charming would be well above understatement. A good fraction of the reasoning behind his stellar grades was largely due to him talking his way into an A. Cocky and arrogant as he was, Jean was wise enough to filter his words in situations where filtering was well needed, easily making him among the top students for his year. And for Professor Smith to mock him felt insulting to his so-called intelligence. It wasn’t that he didn’t know bringing up a mundane point such as the weather was the lamest thing next to that time Mikasa gave him a fake number, but the flaw in his logic was the assumption that Erwin would go along with the flow, taking his friendly strike into conversation with stride. 

As it seems, though, when it came to his Professor, that calm and cool demeanor was abolished completely. “It doesn’t seem like you have anything better to say,” He commented poorly, irritation seeking from his person like a leaky pipe. He bit his tongue before he could say something truly incriminating and glared down at the equations. 

Now there was really no chance of him getting any work done with the newfound mood that he was presently set it. It was almost funny how quickly someone could twist his emotions into something ugly, but there was no humor now. Not today. Not when he was stuck in this room for God only knows how long. Maybe if he scowled down at his paper long enough, time would pass quicker and he could just go home.

“Mythbusters? That might be one of the shittiest–’’ 

“W- wait, Professor Smith?! Fuck, uh, I mean, what a.. great show? Amber and Jasmine are my favorite.. !”

Giving him a slight death stare, the biology professor rolled his eyes at Jean. “Don’t take me for a fool. I know damn well when you’re lying,” he mentions before tipping his head in the opposite direction, his mind wandering places it usually went all the time.

“Thought you’d appreciate it, since you see it almost every time you’re in class,” he says with a slight pout in his voice.

Worry and nerves eased into the boy’s mind, not in fear that he had offended his professor, but more so afraid his grade would be lowered. He couldn’t afford to piss the older man off now with the mere idea of Eren Jaeger stepping over him. With that wavering over his conscience, a forced smile plastered Jean’s face.

“C’mon Prof., don’t be so hard on yourself! As a student I appreciate everything you do for the class. And between you and me, you play some ‘sick tunes’.”

And so began the lies.

An audible groan set the student to mash his head against the cold leather of steering wheel, harshly gritting his teeth. “I didn’t exactly expect to spend my Saturday afternoon stuck on the road with you, y’know. I had places to be. You’re lucky I even offered to give you a ride back to your place.’’

“… Not that it matters now since we’re both stuck.’’

“I had plans, too. And you didn’t have to. I couldve walked. I just.. Didnt want to”

Uncomfortable silence fell upon them, therefore forcing Jean to take the initiative and carelessly flick the ‘volume’ knob at max, causing the entirety of the car to be filled with the sounds of Nirvana’s guitar.

He sketches a rainy scene using their situation as inspiration.

He just wanted to deal with the silence

Unable to evade the artist inside that was dying to break free, his eyes casually peeled away from the flooded road before him and down to the other’s sketching. 

“If you angle your pencil more, your shading will be more realistic.” 

Of course he wasn’t able to resist critiquing Eren Jaeger, either. After all, he was his only real rival when it came down art. Though he would never quite have the respect or decency to admit it out loud, the kid had talent, and he could see that. Which, if you think about it, made the motive of their constant fights and bickering become ever more clear.

He was shocked to hear Jean talking. In fact, he forgot he was there with how loud the music was.

“Thank you, Jean. But it’s just a sketch. Trying to pass the time, y’know?”

Eren secretly loved Jean’s art, mainly because it was about as good as his. Fighting for top of the class is hard work, leaving them to always fight. Jean’s a talented guy. And he was quite happy that he had some feedback on this shitty sketch.

“Don’t get the wrong idea here, I just don’t wanna see you fuck up a perfectly decent sketch is all.”

All attention was swiftly averted back to the paved streets. Seeing as the rain had began to calm down some, part of the water had already been drained into the sewers, leaving the flood only half of what it was prior to now. 

“It’s about damn time. Now maybe traffic’ll start movin’ up and we can actually get somewhere.”
