"I can't keep pretending that I don't care."
Erwin turned to Petra in alarm at her statement, an apprehensive flash in his eye at her words. He decided to play it safe, though.
“What do you mean, Petra?”
Erwin had been worried about Petra the entire day, but didn’t confront her about it. He had noticed she had been avoiding being in his presence, even going so far as to make someone else do her job for her. He understood, but she didn’t really give him a chance to voice how he felt about the situation. So it was an understatement to say that he was surprised when he heard a timid voice peep behind his door. “Permission granted,” he says.
He looks up from his piles of papers and averts his eyes to the ginger soldier. She was holding a steaming cup, and he knew what it would be for. “Thank you, Petra,” he affirms her, “That was really sweet of you. You could have still been avoiding me, you know. I understand.”
He gives her a sweet smile before telling her to set it on the side of his desk, looking back at the mess upon his desk.

Three hours of written notes and occasional napping had passed, dismissal from the class finally within reach. Jean’s books and supplies had gathered all into his mess of a bag as he groggily waved goodbye to a few classmates within the room. He couldn’t fathom how he managed to make it through four classes today with minimal periods of rest without collapsing on spot, but at least now he was given the opportunity to go home and sleep through the entirety of the following day. Though the world works in mysterious ways, and those plans would reveal to be unattainable in the coming times.
“Seeya Prof.,” The boy stammered in the moment he began forcing himself through the exit. Though before wholly taking his leave, an announcement began on the PA.
“You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.’’ A simple statement from the administration; the building had been snowed in, we were unable to leave at this time, etc, etc… He turned his attention to his surrounding area, appearing that only he and Professor Smith were lodged into this particular room. Uncomfortable silence filled his ears. “What now?” He questioned, mostly to himself, once several minutes had passed.
Erwin simply chuckled at the boy’s foolishness. He would think that he would have a better retort, or even something to tease the older man, but nothing came. Just a pathetic excuse of a sentence tumbled from his lips. It was easy for Erwin to control his emotions and his actions, so he wasn’t surprised when he spoke so fluently and unwavering to the boy. He’d gotten good at mastering himself, and he was proud of it. He pushed away the nuisances of papers on his desk and raised his hands over his head, interlocking them and leaning back in his chair.
“Don’t you have any hobbies you should be getting to? Why can’t you be a normal student and write or read in your free time instead of sleeping in my class?” Erwin had closed his eyes, relishing in the silence. He never got this type of freedom usually. All day for hours upon hours he had to sit in front of adolescents and teach them about things they’d likely forget. He noticed Jean looking at something before he closed his eyes though, and he peeped one blue sphere open to look at the boy.
“Now you decide to be normal? With homework?”

"I can't keep pretending that I don't care."
Erwin turned to Petra in alarm at her statement, an apprehensive flash in his eye at her words. He decided to play it safe, though.
“What do you mean, Petra?”
Petra took a deep breath in before explaining herself. She’d been keeping her small secret for months from her commander. It was so unprofessional, yet she had to spill to clear her mind.
“It kind of hurts to see other women flirting with you whenever all the squad are finally allowed to go out… I know it shouldn’t bother me as much as it does, but it pulls at my heartstrings.”
Erwin’s gaze softened as he heard her words. He knew it came straight from her heart, and it tugged at his own heartstrings. He had no idea she had felt this way, because, well, frankly, she hadn’t really expressed her feelings all that much. He knew it was unprofessional and wrong, but he admired her courage.
“It was really brave of you to do that, Petra. I really appreciate you telling me and not keeping a secret. But, how long have you felt this way?”
The small ginger didn’t think she would get that far in her small plan to admit her thoughts and feelings to her superior. There was no chance that the feelings were mutual between her and the commander since he was way out of her league in her mind. Her blush only intensified after his question.
“It doesn’t matter.I’ll submit your paperwork asap!”
The commander caught her arm and kept her in place. He didn’t want her to leave, not now. He wanted to hear all she had to say. After all, he didn’t want her words to go to waste.
“Answer my question. That’s an order, Petra.”
“Sir, please! Its nothing to worry about!”
Petra’s voice rose slightly as her embarrassment soared through the roof. This was such a bad idea to even begin with, even knowing the commander was curious in nature. She should of saw it coming.
“Well, I’m worrying about it. It’s too late to turn back now, you know.”
He made it blatantly obvious he wanted an answer. He quirked his brow downwards and gave her a blank stare, one filled with discontent and annoyance.
“Sir this is intimidation! I shouldn’t of said anything!”
The small ginger broke free from the commander’s tight grip on her petite arm. Tears started to roll down her cheeks from the extent of her embarrassment that she was in. Instantly darting down the corridor to submit the commanders paperwork.
Erwin looked as though he had seen a ghost. He was petrified, and scolded his own behavior. He didn’t mean to come off as that harsh, and battled with his insides as to how he’d handle the situation. He didn’t want things to be awkward, and he didn’t intend to make her upset.
He knew that if he went after her and probed further, that he’d get nowhere. He wanted to know the extent of how she was feeling, and in return, to tell her the same. More than anything, he didn’t want things to become heavy and strained. He wanted to fix everything, but he just didn’t know what to do.

Uncomfortable silence filled his ears. “What now?” He questioned, mostly to himself, once several minutes had passed.
Teaching was boring sometimes, but when it came to the fourth hour of the day, he couldn’t help but wonder how students were still tired and napping in his class. Halfway through, he just resorted to assigning them bookwork and leaving them alone the rest of the class period. He was getting quite tired of them, as well. He browsed through some things on his computer and occasionally sent glances to the class, seeing the stupidity that was going on. He rolled his eyes and almost huffed in relief that the bell had finally rang out. He saw several students file out, except for one.
The PA sounded, and Erwin had immediately regretted every single life choice and decision. His eyes shut tight and he rubbed his head in frustration. He was going to agree with the statement Jean had just said, but his voice faltered. He just remembered what situation he was in. And that he actually had to filter his words more this time and actually be in control of himself.
In a lack of better terms, this wasn’t going to go well.
He was confused as to how the other students had filed out of the room much quicker than the latter standing in front of his door, but here they were. All the other students had been in other classrooms by now, and there was no way no one else would come in the room. The fifth hour of the day was his prep. He acted as though nothing had happened, though. That would be for the best, right? He just simply stacked some papers and ignored that Jean was there. At least, for now.
Jean found himself frozen in place, one hand on the silver handle for what felt like an eternity. More silence, that was simply fantastic. It was bad enough he was practically cornered inside the building having nowhere else to go, but now the boy had to stand before his Professor with the resemblance of a deer captured in the headlights of a car, absolutely no knowledge of a followup for conversation. With deep contemplation on what course he should allow himself to take, he decided to initiate movement and relaxed into a chair that lingered a safe distance away from the very head of the room.
Of course, it did take a great deal of concentration to focus on any amount of homework that had been assigned given the circumstances. This may as well be classified among the most awkward and uncomfortable situations he has found himself in to date. There was no particular reason he should feel so stiff around his Professor, but there was something about his energy, and the way he spoke that sent chills up his entire body.
He obnoxiously cleared his throat, wondering solemnly if he should speak. “Some crazy weather out there now, am I right?’’
Why the fuck was he asking about the weather, could he seriously not come up with a better topic? Too late to take back now, he supposes.
Erwin simply uncapped his pen and got his hands on a rather large pile of papers that were sitting near his computer. A pile was always there that he always ignored and left for the worst circumstances. Worst circumstances being if Hanji came to talk to him or when a student would try to strike up a friendly conversation with him. And now was one of those times. He stuck the cap on the opposite side of the utensil and started looking over the students’ assignments with an abysmal face. Sometimes he didn’t even know how they got these answers.
He was nervous when Jean had his hand stuck to the door. He felt even better when he moved to the back of the room, him being the one to initiate a safe distance from each other. And to that, Erwin was grateful. He couldn’t really go anywhere, because frankly, his desk is the only place he would be at. He would look very out of place in a chair around the room. He didn’t look at Jean when he moved to the back, but simply stopped his intricate movements of grading.
His eyebrow quirked up in disbelief at the topic Jean was trying to pull up. The atmosphere was awkward, and with Erwin’s inept skills of conversation, he probably would have said the same thing. A thick silence covered the air, and Erwin gulped from the icy calm present in the room. He decided it would be useless to keep quiet and to keep control, so he just decided to finally speak up.
“Out of all things you could be talking about, you chose the weather? Amateurish,” Erwin says, not looking up from his pile of disappointing assignments.
"I can't keep pretending that I don't care."
