oh my goodness!!! it just hit me that hiccup is from a time period waaaaaay before shakespeare meaning there are a lot of words he's never even heard of before of ever imagined hearing. 

i can just image him being all confused about what everything means and he stumbles upon a pocket dictionary (he can't even believe that something like that exists) so he just reads the entire thing in one night because hiccup loves to know things. he just writes down the ones he loves the most because it's impossible to remember all of them at once. but he promises himself that h will one day

goodness forbid he learns how to use the internet because he will probably look up everything and never get off because knowledge!!

now i can imagine his section of the dorm being littered with papers and homework and his bed being covered with books so he's forced to curl up in a small designated corner on it when he has to sleep. if he does decide to sleep in his bed because he usually falls asleep at the desk over some piece of paper.

Suppressing a chuckle, Aladdin watched and waited with amusement while the brunette had a miniature break down in front of him. It didn’t take someone with Solomon’s Wisdom to figure out the teen hadn’t seen magic before—and his assumption was further confirmed when he was asked how he flew. 

“I used magic! Don’t you have any magicians where you’re from?” Ah, but if he was from this world then it was unlikely. It seemed that in this modern era magic was a dead art. Still, judging from the language he spoke to himself in, it seemed like he wasn’t exactly from around here either.

“Most magic is a bit harder than this, but I kind of just… will it to carry me and it does.” Aladdin had known how to use the turban since he had left the Holy Palace—not that he knew what magic was (or what he was, for that matter) at the time. “I can do more than just fly though!” 

Aladdin kind of wanted to show what else he could do, but he refrained because he was unsure whether or not his new companions mental state could handle it right now.

Hiccup, thankfully, had calmed down enough to answer the boy's questions. He really did need to stop overreacting about things, but it probably wouldn't stop anytime soon. Though he is quite sure that is shock is a natural reaction, or at least he hopes that is the case. Thinking so makes the young viking feel a little bit better about being scared by a kid much smaller than himself.

"Yes and no...maybe?" The brunet knows the answer isn't the best one, but he never was the best at explaining things. He'd either end up confusing himself, or confusing the person that was listening to him. "There's this thing called Seiðr back where I come from. Uh...it's sorcery, but not widely used, plus it's usually only the women that do it." He guessed that was the same as magic, though he wasn't to sure. Back on Berk, the only person he knew that did stuff similar to that was probably Gothi, but he couldn't understand what she was saying half of the time anyway. Well, read it anyway, since she wrote instead of talked for whatever reason. 

Hiccup wasn't surprised when the younger said he could do more stuff. There was always more when something mystical was involved, kind of like dragons. The viking is curious by nature, always wanting to know more about something new he's encounter. Though the idea of doing something beyond flying without a dragon is slightly concerning, Hiccup is interested. He's always been that one viking that is more or less okay with going outside of his comfort zone to learn something new. That was how he and Toothless became such great companions.

"What else can you do..." He trails off mid-sentence, realizing that he doesn't even know the boy's name. "Sorry, I was a bit too freaked out to do normal introductions. My name's Hiccup, and you are?"

002. unexpected encounter

“Hey, I’m teammates with folks named E. Aster Bunnymund and Sanderson Mansnoozie; your name could be worse.” Seriously. Bunny’s real name was Easter Bunny. That was just plain unfortunate. He was actually caught between thinking that Sandy’s whole name was kind of neat or really awful. A part of him suspected that it actually came from North misinterpreting rather than it being the Sandman’s real name. 

“Anyway, ‘Jokul Frosti’ gave you away. Viking lore, you know. Also your clothes, too, we can’t forget that.” Jack plucked at his own hoodie. He may have not been one with notable fashion savvy (he’d been wearing the same pair of pants for 300 years after all), but he was sure the fur vest look was from a specific lot of people.

The brunet gives the other boy a look of disbelieve. Those names are absolutely ridiculous, and it's hard to believe that they actually exist somewhere in the world. Then again, Hiccup has encountered many ridiculous things in his lifetime; things that make odd names pale in comparison. It's hard to believe that the other would be making them up, even though they seemed like the type of things you'd expect to find a children's folk tale. "My name doesn't seem all that bad then I guess." He decides not to argue about the matter.

The young viking automatically brings his had to his chest, gripping the green fabric of his shirt. His clothes weren't that bad were they? He looks down, confusion still visible on his face. He liked this outfit, even though it was a little worn from constant wear. At least it did its job and kept him warm. "What's wrong with my clothes? Honestly, it's better than running around naked I think."

Wheatley shakes his head and grins.

“Have some confidence in me, mate! I can hold you, honest! I’m not that much of a weakling. Sure, I’m not the strongest bloke in the world, but I’m not the weakest! Plus it’s on my shoulders, so it’ll be just fine. I’ll just lock my knees and hoist you up, and everything’ll be just fine!”

When the other displays his prosthetic leg, Wheatley becomes almost noticeably more worried. He hides it—that’s the polite thing to do—but there’s that bit of doubt in the back of his head because of it. What if it was more painful that he was bargaining for? Probably not the best… set of circumstances for the plan. But it’s what he’s got, and it’s what he’ll use.

“Nah, it’ll be fine. That’s not much different from Aperture’s long fall boots. Those were bloody painful to have standing on my shoulders—made of metal and such, and one time the heel-thingy came out while they were standing there—and I doubt your little doohickey could be much worse. It should be fine, and if needed, I could definitely compensate for the difference in weight or whatever.

Don’t worry. I’m a well-trained scientist for one of the most advanced testing facilities on Earth, so I’m proper educated in preventing damage to the item being tested. Let’s just pretend the item is the leg. No offense to you, though. You’re important too, I assume. It’s just, back at Aperture, the Portal Gun was usually priority number one, as the test subjects came a dollar a dozen. I mean, wait. Wait, that sounds bad. Just kidding! Hahaha! April Fools—wait. It’s January. Um… January.. Fools! The test subjects were priority numero uno! Probably numero zero, technically. Less than one. Yeah, good. Anyways, hop on my shoulder—don’t literally hop, that’d hurt—and let’s get on with this retrieving!”

Hiccup still isn't sure what to think about this person, but he realizes that protesting won't work like he thought it would. The only reason he was so wary was because he didn't want to risk falling, but it wasn't like that was the worse pain he'd ever experienced. It wasn't now that he looked back on it. When he woke up from that long sleep he took after killing the queen, it hurt a lot, and for a few weeks after that too. Even before that he was used to aching feelings that came from lifting heavy things and flying through fire that Toothless sometimes liked to shoot out when they were going for a ride.

The brunet lets out a slightly reluctant sigh but agrees to the idea with a nod of his head. It seemed like the easiest thing to do seeing as though he was all out of options. The paper wasn't really that important, but he'd like to have it in his possession. He also didn't want anyone looking at it, though it would be hard to decipher unless they knew how to read his native language. He doubted that few, if any, actually did.

"Fine." He finally answered. "I don't know what a scientist is but I guess I'll go along with this. What do I have to lose?"

A scrawny boy came wobbling out from the brush and into her field of few. He didn’t look like much but she knew better than to judge strength on appearance. Her mother looked as delicate as a flower but she could hit any target, not to mention she was fearless in times of trouble. The brunet tried to subdue her much like one would do when attempting to tame a beast. Not the most charming first encounter but it wasn’t like she was doing much better herself.

Although, because of his actions she wasn’t planning on lowering her weapon, that was until something remarkable happened. A ghostly cerulean swirl appeared right beside the viking’s prosthetic leg then disappeared just as quickly as it came. Could this be her…fate? The princess continued to stare at the empty air where the wisp once was. His left leg, clean off just like her father’s. If her adventure with her mother taught her her anything it was that nothing was a coincidence. Somehow this boy’s fate was entwined with her’s and she would never get to find out how if she released an arrow upon him.

Against her better judgement she brought the bow up over her head again so that the string now rested across her chest once more, all while she returned the arrow to her quiver. Now realizing that there was no need for secrecy she pulled back her hood releasing her mass of scarlet curls and revealing her pale freckled face. She acknowledged the boy with aqua optics. Her lips upturned slightly before she began speaking to him.

“Ye know it’s not very smart to be sneakin’ ‘round a lass like me. Ye should be thankful ye didn’t ‘ave to learn that the hard way.” Her words couldn’t be more true. If the wisp had’t come around than who knows what she would have done. Someone as impulsive as her probably shouldn’t be able to wield a weapon but she refused to go anywhere without her bow. She was no damsel she never wanted to feel helpless.

The brunet shifted uncomfortably under the stranger's gaze, even more so since he noted them staring at his leg, or lack of one. The fact that he was missing most of it didn't really bother him; it was a small price to pay for a big cause. There was no need for him to be ashamed of it. The only real problem he had with was that the young viking had to practically relearn to walk, and his clumsiness had increased ten fold, especially on smoother surfaces. having people staring at it made him feel awkward; another thing that caused him to stick out, and the teen didn't want that, but it was just one of those things that couldn't be helped. 

His mood soon changed to one of relief when he noticed that the person had decided to put their bow down. The boy visible relaxed, small shoulders shagging as he released the breath that he didn't know he was holding. Danger had passed for now it seems, and the young viking was spared so far. He really did need to be careful about who he decided to show slight interest in; trouble and danger seemed to be attracted to him. Personally, he blamed his danger seeking bloodline for that little fact.

Hiccup blinked, a little confused and a little shocked all at once when the person revealed themselves. He knew it was girl before the hood had been removed; he could tell from the voice. He just wasn't expecting to meet another female to have the type of air that his mother and Astrid had. It was the kind that demanded a sort of respect, letting people know that they shouldn't be trifled with. Hiccup never did too well around girls (or people) especially ones that were noticeably tougher than him. 

"Sorry about that." He began, ending the apology with a nervous chuckle. "I was just curious, and wanted to know what all the talking was about." It was a pretty lame excuse, even though it was true. There was just somethings that he shouldn't do because he was curious about them. He almost got impaled with an arrow this time. "My name's Hiccup, it's nice to meet you?"

“Flameless candles? Do you mean lightbulbs?”

Jokul Frosti? He hadn’t heard that one in a really, really long time. Jack always thought it confusing that his mythology sprung from viking lore, yet he was born as Jack Frost about a century later in colonial America. Maybe belief had to be established before an actual embodiment could be made. He didn’t know. And if Manny knew, then he sure didn’t feel like telling him.

“Yeah. And… you’re a viking?” Then again, the clothes should’ve been a dead giveaway. But Jack was fairly certain that vikings were an old thing already; even if they were still around, what would they be doing all the way in Japan? Considering all the other people he met from earlier times, he wanted to suspect a time warp in the works somewhere within Tancho, but as far as he knew the only entity that could do something like that was Father Time. And he doubted that the old guy had anything to do with a high school.

"More or less." The runt answered with a small shrug. "What gave it away? Was it my large bulging muscles or my gruff and manly voice?" He realized that vikings didn't seem to be a common occurrence around here for whatever reason. That basically gave him another way to stick out which wasn't something that he really wanted to do. It wasn't like he was ashamed of his heritage; it was probably more ashamed of him anyway. 

"I mean I am from the Hairy Hooligan tribe, and my dad is the chief, but that doesn't really affect that I'm still a viking. Not a very good one though." The brunet sighed, rubbing his face before deciding that now would be a good time to introduce himself. "I'm Hiccup Haddock the Third. Please laugh at my name now if you want." The only thing his name was supposed to signify was the fact that he was a runt, a literal hiccup in the gene pool of great vikings. He had some redeeming points though, like taming dragons.

“Are you sure about that? You don’t look very upset.” Usually people were upset or angry when they made a mistake. Yuno certainly was when she accidentally forgot to kill that kid that one time. But Yuno was too perfect to make such silly mistakes like getting paper stuck in a tree.

This boy was certainly something. A fake leg? Was she the cause of this? She had slept walked once or twice before. Who knew what kind of things she could get up to then? She had heard that there was some kind of fire nearby on those nights though…

The question slightly irritated the pinkette, but not enough to go out and slaughter some innocent guy. “How would I know?” Why was it that the only time people turned to her was when they wanted someone dead or help? Besides, how on earth would rope help him? He wasn’t going to try to climb up with that leg was he? All the more reason to not help him out. If she was going to care about someone’s wellbeing, this was how, by not letting some guy with a fake leg climb up a tree. Also she had no idea where the rope was.

The brunet blinked, tilting his head to the side. "I'm not upset though, a little agitated because my paper is gone but not upset." Why would he be upset over a piece of paper anyway? It wasn't even the final design; there'd be many more where that came from. Hiccup was someone that got easily annoyed, not upset.

"There's no need to be upset, I was just asking a question." The brunet stated, sighing slightly. He had hopes that she went to this school long enough to know where some rope might be, but apparently not. He had already had a plan about what was going to happen if he did have some. Mainly if it would be strong enough to support his weight, even if he was lighter than most kids his age. Back at home anyway. He didn't want to fall and possibly break something, he had enough of injuries now.

Suddenly, he got an idea. It was more or less a last resort one, and probably wouldn't work, but it was better than nothing. "Do you know how to climb trees?" It really wasn't his best idea, but whatever, he wanted to test all the possibilities just in case something did work.

I still can’t believe that people have never used a candle. Even with these weird magical lights I’d think they’d at least try once just to see how it works. Unfortunately, they probably will but that shouldn’t stop you from sticking with what you’re comfortable with.

Candles are so much more efficient than those weird lights though. I mean you can make them fairly easily, not to mention they're portable. They don't know what they're missing. Okay, I can try as long as it doesn't end bad, that tends to happen when I do things.

“Oh. Not that different from Yetis then.” Or, that was the impression he got whenever he tried to sneak into the North Pole. He wasn’t entirely sure if they reacted that way to all strangers or if it was just because he was intruding since there really weren’t a lot of strangers hanging around North’s Workshop. Granted, they didn’t take too kindly with Titus when he broke in either. Jack stole a glance at Toothless, resisting the urge to reach out and try to pet the dragon. He couldn’t help but be curious despite the loose warnings. Maybe later.

The winter spirit rubbed his hands together in a feeble attempt to lessen the cold on them before offering one to the brunette. “My name is Jack Frost; since you’re able to see me, I’m guessing you’ve heard of me.”

Hiccup brushed off the yeti comment with a mental shrug, deciding to ask about that late. They must have been some sort of other mystical creature, kind of like dragons. Though dragons were the only ones that Hiccup had ever laid eyes on, he was quite sure that there were more out there. The world was so much larger than the tiny isle of Berk that he was raised on after all. 

The rider takes the other's hand, slightly surprised at how cold it was. The surprise doesn't show on his face, but his confusion doesn't. He wasn't quite sure why he should have heard the boy's name or not, though he would not deny it being somewhat familiar. He starts piecing things together in his mind: extremely pale kid out with no shoes in the middle of winter, white hair, saying things about being seen even though he is right there..."Uh, Jokul Frosti?" That is the very first thing that comes to mind; a nature spirit that had a knack for leaving behind frost and harsh winters. He was spoken of a lot back on Berk seeing as though it was winter there practically all year round.

How long had it been? Certainly more than a couple days. Saying it had been more than a couple weeks would be a stretch. All in all it had been quite a fair amount of time she had spent making her way to the school, unknowingly that is. Who knows how far the trail of wisps was that had taken here? Small azure bursts continued to appear in her path as she galloped by astonished bystanders on her loyal stead, Angus. 

It was only natural for people to stare. To everyone around her she looked as if she had stepped out a fairy tail. Maybe compared to where she was now the Scottish Highlands were considered as much. The stares may have been plentiful but the redhead payed no mind to them. The wisps were now popping up closer and closer together which could only mean one thing, she was almost at her destination, wherever that may be.

Merida began to halt Angus as that last wisp to appear faded into thin air like the ones before it. When she finally looked up she found herself in front of an oddly constructed building. Up till now she had see nothing like the academy. Being a princess she was home schooled by her mother but she had a feeling even if she wasn’t this edifice wouldn’t have looked any more familiar. Effortlessly she dismounted from her horse before approaching the school with caution. The hood of her cloak was still up casting a shadow over most of her face during her wary pursuit.

“What is this place?” She muttered to herself. For some reason she felt uneasy as if someone was watching her. In one swift motion she slipped her bow over her head and into her hands all while she reached for an arrow in her quiver. The princess had heard light footsteps from behind her and now this intruder was about to receive an arrow to the face except for the fact that they weren’t in plain sight. “Come out ye! Ah know yer there Ah already heard ye.”

Hiccup wasn't one to listen to rumors, mostly because he didn't have time for them. There seemed to be a lot of commotion going on though about some person riding a big black horse through the school grounds, and honestly that seemed to absurd to make up. Not that he could talk about the absurdity of things given his circumstances; the same rumors would probably be spread about him if he came mounted on Toothless's back.

The young viking had meant to ignore everything, and go see how Toothless was doing, until he caught sight of who the gossip was apparently about. Against his better judgement, Hiccup decided to follow the girl with storybook like attributes as she wander around campus. He wasn't the most skilled at this kind of stuff, and it had gotten even more difficult to manage now that he basically had to relearn how to walk, but he did good.

Until she pulled out an arrow and pointed right in his general direction. 

Deciding that he had enough of this, the runt slowly scooted out of his hiding spot behind a tree. His arms were raised in hopes to show that he was no real threat, and he really wasn't. For once, he was glad his dragon wasn't with him because he knew nothing good would come from it.

"No, no, nononono. It's okay, I won't do anything, I promise." Now talking to a girl like she was an upset dragon wasn't the best thing he could probably come up with, but the brunet was rather freaked out right now. He had a experienced a lot of painful things in his life, but getting hit with an arrow wasn't one, and he had no intention of having that happen.

Jack relaxed the grip he had on his crook when a human boy popped out from behind the dragon. With the way that the brunette was handling the dragon—Toothless—it was apparent that he owned? was friends with? the beast. It would explain what a dragon was even doing all the way here in urban Japan. Taking Toothless as not a threat, the winter spirit rooted his staff on to the ground and leaned against it.  

“No, no, it’s okay. ‘s funny, I didn’t think dragons made buddies with people.” Jack always figured that dragons tended to stay away from humans—heck, this was the first time he actually saw one up close. The novelty of it all was enough to let the breaking of his frost flower slide. He briefly thought about making a strong, independent black woman joke on Toothless, but seeing as how the dragon still looked a little upset with him, Jack decided against it.

Hiccup noted that his dragon was now in the protective mode, leaning against the boy's body, almost making him fall over in the snow. But he was glad that the dragon was so close, meaning that he could take some of the weight off his leg. He really needed to find a way to keep that area from getting irritated; school required more walking than his leg could take. At the other teen's assumption, Hiccup couldn't help but let out a half-amused snort. "I thought that too not so long ago, but they're actually not so bad. And rather easy to train if you know what you're doing."

Toothless broke his gaze with the weird child to give rider an annoyed one, obviously not liking the way that last sentence was put. "My bad, you have to compromise with them." Hiccup corrected with a small sigh and an eye roll.

"Anyways, they only attack if they're threatened, and apparently people have been doing that for a while, that's why they seem so angry and unfriendly. Toothless is pretty nice, you just startled him. He doesn't really like strangers in the first place."
