John Wayne Gacy went by Pogo the Clown and Patches the Clown. He said that Pogo was his happier clown alter ego, while Patches was serious. As Pogo, Gacy participated in a number of events, including parades, political picnics and hospital visits to entertain sick children. He later told investigators what he could get away with as Pogo, including fondling women at public events.

Timmothy Pitzen vanished in May 2011 after his mother, Amy Fry-Pitzen, took him from his Aurora, Illinois school on a three-day road trip to various Midwest water parks. Amy later died by suicide in a Rockford motel, leaving a note claiming Timmothy was safe but would never be found. His whereabouts remain unsolved.

In February 1978, five men from Yuba County, California, disappeared after attending a basketball game. A few days later, their car was discovered in good condition in a remote area of the Plumas National Forest. When the snow melted that summer, investigators located the remains of four of the missing men: Jack Huett, 24; Jack Madruga, 30; Bill Sterling, 29; and Ted Weiher, 32. However, Gary Mathias, a 25-year-old schizophrenic with a history of violence who had once escaped from a mental health facility through a sewer pipe, was never found.
