Hello!! I am a certified horse nerd (hence the title) and I am here to teach yāall some stuff about horses!
I do reining and ranch riding, and study hippology (now donāt go thinkin I know everything though)
I love horses and Iām here to get yāall to love āem too so feel free to ask any questions about horses and I am welcome to answer the best I can! I will also be posting horse facts every week!!
Horse fun fact of the week!!
Many people may think horses only sleep while standing up, but that is actually not true!! Horses sleep both standing up and laying down, when they lay down they get deep REM sleep and they need about 30 mins of REM sleep a day to not become sleep-deprived!!

What is ranch riding?.Ā°ĖāĀ ā§Ā
Ranch riding shows the horses ability to be a pleasurable partner while doing everyday ranch maneuvers, such as changing gaits, changing leads, and going over logs!! There are many different ranch classes like ranch trail, ranch reining, and of course ranch riding, but that is just to name a few there are many more!!

Horse not so fun fact of the week!
Horses cannot throw up at all, so they will get stomachaches very easily. These stomachaches, also known as colic, can become deadly to horses. So keep an eye on a horse that may be exhibiting symptoms of colic and call a vet if it doesnāt get better!
some symptoms of colic are: rolling around a lot, laying down, not eating, nipping at their stomach, profuse sweating (not due to heat), and dehydration (check for dehydration by pinching the skin at their neck and if it doesnt go back down immediately they are dehydrated)

What is cross country?ĖāĀ ā§Ā š
Cross country is a jumping class that focuses on the horses speed, endurance, and ability to navigate difficult terrain and jumps. Cross country is one of three phases in eventing, but it can also be itās own competition. The sport originates from fox hunting like many jumping classes, but it is much more similar to actual fox hunting than a class like hunter jumping.

Przewalski's horse is the last truly wild horse species! They are native to the steppes of Central Asia, and they were once extinct in the wild but brought back through captive breeding programs!!
Bonus fun fact about the Przewalskiās horse is that in 1998 they released up to 36 horses into the Chernobyl exclusion zone, and the current known amount is around 150 horses and they are thriving!! (Although there has been some issues regarding war and wildfires since 2020)

What is cutting cows?.Ā°ĖāĀ ā§Ā
Cutting cows is when a rider exhibits their horseās ability to handle cattle, and show its athleticism. The rider and the horse will have 2 and a half minutes to perform and the rider must put down their reins and leave it up to the horse to exhibit its ability, although leg cues are allowed and often used to help out! One of the current most earning cutting horse rider is Lloyd Cox, winning over $12mil in lifetime earnings!!

What is hunter jumping?Ā ā§Ā š
Hunter jumping is a jumping class that focuses on the horse and the riderās movements, and the fluidity of the horse while doing the course. It originates from fox hunting and how you need to keep an even fast pace and fluid movement while following hounds. There are many different versions of the hunt class, like hunter under saddle, and I will further speak of those in future posts!!
What is reining?Ā°Ėā ā§ š
Reining originates from cattle work, showing how agile and in tune with the rider the horse is, making many commonly used maneuvers in cattle work (like fast stops) more flashy! It has now been popularized by famous tv show Yellowstone, and has featured very popular reiners such as the Mccutcheon family and Matt Mills! The current top reining rider with the most earnings is Andrea Fappani, with around $10mil in lifetime earnings!!
