Give Lilly Wachowski Her 10 Fucking Million Dollars To Make A Movie What The Fuck Is Wrong With You You Stupid Cunts Like Hello She Made The Matrix Are You Dumb? Do You Not Like Good Shit?
I genuinely wonder if people realize how many projects get abandoned because the readership "wasn't there", when in reality, the readership just stayed silent. It's a big thing in trad pub that book series get discontinued because readers pirate the books or wait until the series is finished to buy a copy, leading the publisher to think that nobody actually wants the book enough to continue the series, but it happens with indie creators too.
I've discontinued a lot of free, online series because it's not worth putting 3-5 hours a week into posting a project for no readers. Sometimes I finish the series for me but just never post it again, other times I don't finish it at all because it feels more worthwhile to put my time into other things. Sometimes I hear from readers who are sad or upset that I didn't finish something they were liking, but the *reason* it never got finished is because I didn't know anyone liked it. If you like something, tell the creator, tell your friends, make some noise about it. If you would be sad if a story never finished, make that interest known because one of my biggest considerations before discontinuing a series is "will people miss this? Will I be letting people down" and 9/10 times, I come to the conclusion of "no, it doesn't even seem like anyone's reading this" only to learn after I've moved on that apparently someone was.
I've said this before in a different way, and this post said it so well. With real examples. If you like something, tell people.
If you want more content from an artist or author, if you like their stuff, tell them. It will give them creative fuel to keep going. And often it gives them other resources as well. Recommend a work to other people. Leave a comment or a review. It doesn't have to be long, just genuine, a sentence or two. Not many people know that a book's success is judged by book reviews as well as sales. Review the book on Amazon or another site to help it pass the metric of success and be recognized by publishers and retailers.
I just want to remind you that sometimes your life really doesn't begin until you are 26+... Romanticizing and obsessing over our youth is harmful. Growing up is beautiful. Discovering who you are and how you interact with the world is a gift. Maturing and learning what you truly want out of life and living in that purpose brings fulfillment and peace. Your life is not over in your early 20's because you haven't figured it out yet, it's just beginning.

Top 25 consumer brands bankrolling the biggest ICE supporters in Congress:
Trumps Gestapo!!!
⠀ In a 2-to-1 decision, a federal appeals court ordered the Trump administration to halt construction of its $400 million ballroom at the White House. They determined that the project is illegal because it lacks congressional approval. The lone dissenting judge is a Trump appointee. The majority opinion emphasized that a president is a temporary occupant, not the owner, of the White House and that major alterations require explicit authorization from Congress. Trump, who seems to think he should get away with any illegal thing he wants, is appealing the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. Although Trump has won 80% of his emergency appeals to the Supreme Court, legal experts say this time he faces some difficult challenges — assuming the Court decides to even hear the case at all. Following the shooting at the White House Correspondents' dinner, congressional Republicans introduced legislation to authorize the ballroom. However, the bill has failed to gain any real traction or move forward. In a related note, Trump's construction of his Triumphal Arch is also facing legal challenges filed by a coalition of historic preservationists and Vietnam War veterans.
What if we banned all advertising? Not regulate it—abolish it. This proposal would transform manipulation machines, and maybe save democracy
Even as an advertiser (especially as an advertiser), I am convinced that outlawing advertising is the best thing we can do for our world now. More than gun control. More than tackling climate change. More than lowering the price of eggs. Removing these advanced manipulation tools would force everyone—politicians included—to snap back into reality. By outlawing advertising, the machinery of mass delusion would lose its most addictive and toxic fuel.
I started out reading this smugly saying to myself yeah, right.
But by the end I'm sold. Let's ban advertising.
We can start small, maybe with city ordinances. Then roll it out county wide, then at the state level. Once other states see how quiet and sane things can be, they'll adopt the ban too. The ones that don't will remain snarling islands of rage & delusion until the people move away.
Let's ban advertising.
the entire state of vermont already banned roadside billboards years and years ago. change is possible!!
i do think lobbying for data centres over climate goals should be considered a crime against humanity btw

reminder for all hockey fans:
netflix is making a hockey show called "the sticks" that is based on a very real tragedy that occured in canada in 2018.
the show follows a minnesota high school team after their bus crashes and coming back to hockey afterwards.
in 2018, the humboldt broncos' (a junior A team made up of 18-22 year olds) bus was hit by a tractor trailer on a highway intersection. 16 people (10 players, 2 coaches, and 4 team staff members) were killed, along with 13 other players severely injured.
the memory of the humboldt broncos crash is an incredibly sensitive subject carrying a lot of trauma to both the survivors, their families, and deceased's families. the trajectory of hockey in canada was changed significantly after this tragedy.
despite this, netflix has decided to make a show using the death of young hockey players for profit. they did not consult the survivors, nor the deceased's families. they stole a canadian story for a feel-good cash grab.
i understand wanting to watch shows about hockey, but this is not the show to watch. do not give it attention, as the humboldt broncos' memories deserve to be theirs and theirs alone to share.
This is how Netflix advertises the show btw… They’re calling it “your new hockey obsession”. It’s disgusting.
One of the kids on the Broncos lived on my block. A coworker lost her brother in law. This tragedy was widely felt in Canada as a whole - flags at half-mast level.
None of the families even knew about this show until the media started asking how they felt.
It is taking a tragedy and turning it into a cash cow.
This was such a deeply-felt issue that even the truck driver pleaded guilty and has tried to make amends. (And as he is facing deportation after his sentence, some of the families have even started supporting him being allowed to stay in the country.) There is a real story you could be telling about community and resilience that is not just turning one of the worst days for THE NATION into cheap thrills and sensationalism.
Don't watch. Don't tweet. Pretend this show does not exist.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: A lot of "mental health issues" disappear when bills are paid, rent is secure, and the fridge is full. Peace is expensive. And pretending money doesn't affect mental health is privilege.
I think it's really important to point out one of the major flaws in that highway analogy:
Eminent domain requires payment.
The government cannot come in and merely seize your land under eminent domain and pay you nothing. There is a process & they have to pay you market value for your land and the buildings on it. A couple of my former clients went through this about 15 years ago when the 202 Bypass went through in Montgomery & Bucks County in Pennsylvania. Their houses and land were taken via eminent domain so that the highway could be built, but, I need to say this again: they were paid.
They were paid and there was a process in which they were informed ahead of time. They didn't just drive home one day and find out their home had been snatched, too bad, so sad, no money for you, you should have put your house in a bank vault.
Just taking someone's shit like that without compensation has a name, and it's not eminent domain or anything like it:
It's fucking theft.
(I'm not interested in hearing the same tired shit about how copyright is inherently bad and only protects corporations, because as someone who deals with protecting my livelihood from scammers and scrapers via copyright every goddamned day, this isn't a fun mental exercise/philosophical debate for me, and you're absolutely wrong. Fucking save it for someone ignorant enough and with time to waste on that.)
At least that guy was immediately banned and reported on both reddit and discord. Seeing as how he openly admitted to 12 million counts of theft, taking data without paying despite explicit lack of consent, here's hoping he'll face criminal charges too.
Unkind reminder that if you support HP or jkr in any form you’re not welcome around me. Any support of that franchise or that woman actively hurts trans people, and their lives are more important than any amount of nostalgia or joy the franchise brings you.
Jkr has said point blank that any money she makes is funding her transphobia. Period. You can’t “death of the author” it away. It isn’t a “there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism” thing either. If you fully understand what harm that woman is doing with the money she makes from that franchise and willingly support it anyway, I can and will assume you’re okay with trans people being hurt.
There has already been so many egregious things, from the people she's recruited to terfdom, to the policies she's supported, to the foundations she's supported and founded as well if I recall correctly, but she also always seems to find a new low. The most recent I know was all caps demanding a debate from a trans woman and when that wasn't granted, posting an upskirt picture of that person, to which her followers and fans commented awful things up to, including, and beyond if they could or couldn't see genitals. That's the quality of person that she surrounds herself with and if someone is choosing to dismiss that and continue supporting her, they are deliberately choosing to support someone who is intentionally doing their utmost to hurt an estimated 83 million trans people in the world and an additional 166 nonbinary and gender non-conforming people, and honestly, that's likely low balling the number and only the foremost discussed group for her, there are others. She posted revenge porn to a public social media because they wouldn't argue with her about their right to exist and be treated as a person. She routinely goes after the former cast of both HP and FB for daring to disagree with her. And for the people with claims of nostalgia, I have a question which is: What are you nostalgic of? Was it the fandom? Most of the ones that made it special left those spaces years ago. The movies? She's doing her best to hurt the OG casts' careers and erase the first take from existence with the new series. Every time the new show airs, you'll remember how the movies did the music or the acting or story and it's not going to be right. The new version will be a desaturated mockery lacking any of the love you may be looking for in it. Is it the idea of HP being an always welcoming home? If that's the case, when was the last time JKR said that without qualifiers? Maybe even just said it in general, I don't know. How many people that used to proudly be beside you in that fandom have left because they see a (sometimes another) home that closed its doors to them for who they were? How many people have told you that they struggle engaging with it because it hurts that it wasn't all the things they loved that they watched die out as her hatred grew and their fellow fans either echoed it or ignored it politely until they were either shoved out or quietly left with a list of people they knew not to trust? Let's shift the discussion from the financial and social support, if you are still comfortable being a representative of JKR in the world, all of this and more is what you are saying you will permit to happen around you. Abuse, cruelty, sexual misconduct, transphobia, racism, homophobia, all of that is fine if the story sings comfort more loudly than the hurt happening to someone else. If you have apologies about how you hate her beliefs but you're still watching or buying or whatever, keep them to yourself, because a real apology requires action to correct the wrong and that is fundamentally absent in those statements, it's just centering on a way to appease your own guilt.
the whole "insulting someone based on their appearance is bad because it could indirectly hurt people you like who share that feature" is a good start for unlearning body shaming but i do think we need to go further and remind people that even if there was some physical trait that was magically 10000% exclusive to conservatives and creeps and nobody else ever had it, we still shouldnt be insulting them based on that. because the problem with them is not their appearance its their ideology and actions. by insulting their appearance you arent just indirectly insulting others who look like that, youre literally not making the correct point. stay on topic ya know.

The rise of androgyny and unisex fashion in the 1970s was apparently responsible for the introduction of a sex marker in passports.
Oh wow so me saying "no government documentation should ever include a gender marker for any reason" has been right all along. For exactly the reason I stated when people were giving me shit for not supporting x markers on documents.
