It still blows my mind that we did this. One year ago today, we made this magic happen. . . Thirty seconds before this photo was taken, I was holding onto Mar for dear life screaming, “I CAN’T!” Then he said, “Babe, you just did.” I was too shook to cry. My last birth experience was in a hospital and it traumatized me so much I actively tried not to think about it... until I got pregnant again. Then all the memories came back to tell me I wanted a home birth. But then the pandemic hit, along with a series of unfortunate personal events, which meant I did have a home birth, but with no midwife to assist. However that amazing lady who caught my baby is my doula/sister in law, and she stayed with me through every single contraction, 8 hours of contractions, as did my husband, who wanted to catch the baby but I couldn’t seem to let him go when the time came. My other sister in law assisted with love and plenty of back rubs and took this photo. Both of my boys were there, The Monster was clearly right there and even slept through much of mommy’s ruckus. . On June 14th, at 3am, at age 45, I gave birth to my 3rd child, our first girl, in the middle of a global pandemic and a global revolution for Black lives, on our bedroom floor, in the house I was born and raised in, surrounded by people I love. People who love me.
