To preface: This microlabel and all versions of this flag are completely free to use. Credit is not necessary.
This is the second flag I’ve created, made to represent an entirely newly coined microlabel (at least as far as I know), swashbuckling-romantic.
This flag and microlabel was directly inspired by the Team Rocket trio/quartet from the Pokemon anime, and was influenced by LGBTQIA+ interpretations/headcanons of the characters. However, I’ve included a non-fandom version of this flag further down in this post as well, as I believe the concepts within by this microlabel can transcend the fandom context.
Defining Swashbuckling-romantic
A microlabel for alterous attraction that leans more into the romantic end of alterous attraction. The term “swashbuckler” is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as a "swaggering or daring soldier or adventurer”. The suffix “romantic” as it's used here could mean an romantic attraction to other individuals who could be defined as “swashbucklers”, but it could also mean an alterous attraction between individuals who share a view of “romance” as a concept; as in, the aesthetics of romance and/or perceived impractical or idealized desires/views of reality.
The layout of the flag’s bars were intentionally formatted to evoke the bisexual flag. The order of the colors evokes the order of colors in the pansexual flag (particularly in the second flag and non-fandom version in which the central bar is completely light yellow beige/gold in color).
The inclusion of the swords on the flag was to represent the "swashbuckler" aspect - a term used for skilled and showy sword-wielders and adventurers, but is often associated with pirates. They were also designed to vaguely resemble stylized 'R's. The use of crossed swords specifically was inspired by the crossed swords on the Jolly Roger flag that is typically attributed to the 18th century pirate, John "Calico Jack" Rackham. The significance of this is due not only to Calico Jack having been purported to dress flamboyantly, but also due to his crew having two notable members, Ann Bonny and Mary Read; two female pirates who dressed as men and are speculated to have been in a lesbian relationship.
The coloration in both variants of the fandom flags feature colors picked from official stock images of each of the characters.
The first flag is a variation that represents the Team Rocket quartet; it features a bar of red violet on the top half of the flag representing Jessie, a bar of lavender blue on the bottom half of the flag representing James, and two smaller central bars - a light blue bar representing Wobuffet and a light yellow beige bar representing Meowth.Â
The second flag is a variation solely representing the trio with the central bar being completely light yellow beige.
This is the non-fandom version of the flag. The colors used are intended to exclusively represent the concepts described by (and the aesthetics associated with) the microlabel. The red represents the rising or setting sun and romantic attraction; the gold represents a horizon full of potential, other idealized concepts such as the pursuit of riches, success, ect. and platonic attraction; and the blue represents the ocean and queerness.
The name for this microlabel comes from an episode of Pokemon the Series, specifically DP135. Jessie describes the nature of Team Rocket as “throwbacks to swashbuckling romance” in a retort to a duo of pokemon thieves they were attempting to recruit.
This microlabel was created because I’ve been hyperfixating really hard on the Pokemon anime, and more specifically the Team Rocket trio/quartet.
This is also ultimately the biggest reason why I had to create a tumblr account: I’m way too embarrassed to post this on my DeviantArt (which is ironic because I post whatever I want there all the time). Also, tumblr is pretty much MOGAI HQ and posting something like this here just makes the most sense to me.
