Why I Love First Drafts

I just used the word ‘incessantly’ three times on one page

One person said they dated six years ago, and two pages later the author changed the time  line so the ex says it was four years ago.

Do we know?? If any of the scenes?? Match up??

Self indulgent deep emotional conversations about feelings every other page

What is pacing?

This scene is supposed to convey a subtle undertone of the self deceit currently causing the main character’s emotional conflict. So we’ll write ‘she was lying to herself.’

The side character’s name has changed with each appearance because I can’t be bothered to scroll up. 

I don’t know anything about this character until he monologues his entire tragic backstory on page ten. 

The knowledge that even if I don’t use a single word from this draft, I’m still sharpening my skills and becoming a better writer.

writing tip: don’t tell us your character’s backstory. don’t tell us what your character is thinking. don’t tell us what your character is doing. don’t tell us anything. the reader should simply look at a blank page and be suddenly overcome with emotion.

Good tip. I know a lot of writers who cry uncontrollably when they see a blank page, so I’m sure that feeling will translate directly to the reader.
