A practical guide to how the division between Royals VS Rebels works, because after twelve years there's still some confusion.

-> Status quo at the beginning: At the beginning of the story,in the books, the school is divided between Royals And Commoners. The Royals are the children of noble families,like SnowWhite , and the Commoners are the children of common characters such as Pinocchio.

The division doesn't depend on the protagonist/antagonist's role but on social class. So characters like Lizzie, Raven, and Faybelle (who is a Fay, not a Pixie, and therefore is fairy nobility) are royals by default because they descend from nobles, even if they are evil.

-> When the rebels are born: In the books the term Rebels is first used by Daring in the chapters AFTER Raven's decision not to sign the books and becomes the official name of those who side with Raven ONLY in the second book when Raven and Apple arrive at the Castelleria to discover that the students have split up. The term "Royals," however, is never explicitly used for those who side with Apple. What is used is the pun "loyal royals" used by either Grimm or Apple. And this because most of those who have chosen to remain loyal to their destiny are the Royals.

Being a rebel doesn't depend on having signed the book of destiny, but on the will to follow Raven in rebelling. In the books, Cedar signed but still decides to side with Raven, especially because the royals are proving to be classist.

-> The point of Royals vs Rebels: Where personal autonomy is the fundamental principle of Raven's rebellion, the general rebellion of the school is also tied to social aspect, because commoners kids want to have the same rights as the Royals— Hunter can't be with Ashlynn due to the different class; If nobles heirs like Apple are described as Celebrity, Cedar is treated like a freak by people in her chapters. From Daring and Sparrow's dialogues, it's clear that the latter feels class envy towards the nobles. rebellion is a class thing

-> Where the confusion comes from: The confusion arises from the marketing of the series where the division is pre-established even before Legacy Day, making it seem as if the rebels are simply the "children of the antagonists".
