Fog Witch aesthetic
âGranny Witchesâ - Granny women are purported to be healers and midwives in Southern Appalachia and the Ozarks, claimed by a few academics as practicing from the 1880s to the 1930s. They are theorized to be usually elder women in the community and may have been the only practitioners of health care in the poor rural areas of Southern Appalachia. They are fancied to not have expected or received payment, and were respected as authorities on herbal healing and childbirth. They are mentioned by John C. Campbell in The Southern Highlander and His Homeland.

To burn the Witch is to admit that magic exists.

30 DAYS OF HORROR CHALLENGE:Â 2/7 Creatures â Banshees
Banshees (âwomen of the fairy moundâ or âfairy womenâ) are female spirits in Irish mythology. They predict the death of a family member, usually by wailing, shrieking, or keening. They are described as creatures of ghastly complexion, with long streaming red hair, red eyes from continually weeping and wearing a grey cloak over a green dress. When several Banshees appear at once, it indicates the death of someone great or holy. Although they are called fairies, they are in fact closer to ghosts, more specifically the spirits of murdered women or mothers who died in childbirth. Some accounts even state that each family has itâs own Banshee.

the church on the corner promises salvation. you have never seen anyone go inside, but the lights are always on.
a man in houndstooth is at the funeral. âif you need anything,â he says, hugging your mother and shaking your hand, âIâm here for you.â you do not know this man.
âare you thirsty?â the woman asks. Â you nod, but there is already a cup in your hand. Â your lips are purple. Â âI just love grapico,â she tells you. Â you nod again.
the man has a twelve pack. he is a baptist deacon, and the county is dry.
you are hunting with your brother and you lose sight of him for only moments. Â when you meet again, his smile is too wide. has he always been this tall?
the preacher tells you to go in peace. Â you do not know where you are going or how to stop.
the music from the ice cream truck rings in your ears. you hand the man a few dollars, and he hands you a cold yellow package. you open it, and it is full of wasps. the man smiles at you.
the sky is full of colors you cannot name, and your younger cousin tells you itâs because of dragons. you cannot remember how old she is or when she got here.
âitâs mo-beel,â you tell the out of towners, but it is also mobile. Â it is roaming, hunting.
there is a daycare down the road. the children are shouting. you have never seen the children arrive or leave, but sometimes they are quieter.

The Sirens were beautiful but dangerous creatures that lured the sailors with their beautiful voices to their doom, causing the ships to crash on the reefs near their island. They were the daughters of the river god Achelous, while their mother may have been Terpsichore, Melpomene, Sterope or Chthon. Although closely linked to marine environments, they were not considered sea deities. The personality and appearance is most commonly known to be that of a seductive temptress. Her beauty has been said to reflect the wondrous treasures and power of the sea itself. The sound of the siren singing was once thought to be a reason for sailors meeting disaster, as the haunting lilting voice was said to be heard coming from the waves forecasting bad weather. Mixed omens surround the stories of their sudden appearance being feared but also known to have saved the lives of sailors who had fallen overboard.
