it took them weeks to talk normally again, and weeks to finally reach a friendly equilibrium. once the guilt is gone, nolan proves to be quite a sweet companion. from video games to movies, they do what most teenagers do. through that bonding, brett sees nolan in a different light: he is mellow, at certain times even cute. his puppy eyes, however, look very much like an emotional blackmail at this moment.

“ i hear you, i do — but i’m a cat person. ” brett swallows before glancing at the puppy and looking away very quickly. he cannot handle two pair of begging eyes at once. “ i can help find him a home, though. ”

The world has a certain view of you based on your actions. You have a certain view of yourself after your own actions. Particularly after finding you’ve made some more than just crappy decisions, that would certainly qualify you as the supervillain in a comic book, if you found out your life was one. You can’t really figure out why you made said awful decisions in the first place, because. No matter how you look at it. Fear. Self-protection? They make no excuse for the awful shit you’ve done.

It makes you wish that you could turn back time. Go Doctor Who, and time travel like it’s a vaccine for awful decision making. But, outside of sci fi flicks? Time travel isn’t a real solution for mistakes you wish with everything in you to just...erase away. All you have is the present, and where you can go from there. Take responsibility for your supervillain-scale mistakes, and....somehow manage to learn to live with yourself. Hes trying. Giving it his best to step out of the self judgement, that feels like quick sand, asphyxiating him down into regrets that are unbreakable. Abstract forms of vibranium basically, because you can’t begin to shatter away what you’ve already done. But going out into the forest with his crossbow? That helps.  It’s an island. Where the swinging leaves, and tall trees are like a refuge. A shield from the outside world. Focus on the target. On the arrow. On the technique of aiming at the right spot. Sometimes, he pictures the target being his past, and how maybe the arrow at least in that moment, has the power to erase everything terrible he’s done. If it just hits the center. There’s something about it, that idea. It gives him a sense of peace, for at least a couple of seconds. Calms his heart that most of the time feels like he’s a racing  wild rabbit in the center of wolves he’s idiotically pissed off. 

He’d been out there for hours the day before. Lost track of exactly how long. But, at some point, Parker, his puppy, had picked up the sound of another animal whimpering in the distance. Parker was...a very empathetic puppy dog, and of course, at the sounds of another animal in distress? He’d rushed over to where the sounds where coming from. “Parker, hold up!” He’ called out, and in what was a couple of minutes? He and Parker had found themselves in front of the puppy dog, that he was now holding in his arms a day later, in front of Brett. Brett. Who was like another tall tree of protection. Like...another shield from the thoughts that were constantly telling him he’d never be able to move on. And those cheekbones. Holy shit. He always has to look away, because he’s certainly sure that the blush on his own face has to be obvious. And...he more than certainly? Doesn’t deserve his friendship. And...yet here they were. Hanging out again. After nights of snacking, and playing pokemon games, and binging Marvel movies. But, maybe sometimes life gives you presents you never deserve, like. It’s the universe version of Christmas. Or your birthday? Was that stupid to think? He looks down at the puppy in his arms, trying to avoid that always, all-too-intense look in Brett’s eyes. Because that’s how you hide a crush, right? So, he focuses instead of petting behind the puppy’s ears. He has this pout-frown on his lips for a second, when Brett says he can’t take in the puppy. It’s a shame, because...he doesn’t want to completely part ways with Tazz. Yes, Tazz. That’s what he’s decided to name him, because his favorite past time? Spinning around over, and over, chasing his tail at sonically-quick speeds, like he’s a freaking Tasmanian devil. It was adorable, and entertaining.  He wonders how Tazz would feel if they were to completely part ways. To never see each other again. Would he think that...he just didn’t care about him anymore? Because...he didn’t want him to feel abandoned in that way. That sounded terrible. And terrible decisions where something he’s had enough of. “Oh.” He starts to give a small nod. “Yeah, it’s okay. I get it.” It’s...hard to not have the hint of disappointment in his voice, but he tries his best to mask it. He finally looks up into Brett’s eyes, the same intensity like always in them. He gives a couple more pets to Tazz, who’s now starting to lick his face, and he can’t help but give this sheepish, half smile, and let out a soft laugh.  “Tazz- “ He snickers, “Hey, its okay. We’ll head back over to the Res soon.” Head pets. “I guess I just want to make sure I can visit him at his new home. I really tried...like...almost all night to convince my mom, and abuelita to let another puppy stay, but...they say it’s just not enough space for two dogs, and” He shrugs, “They’re probably right. I just don’t want Tazz to feel like I abandoned him, you know? I’d never want him to feel that way...” He says. “If...we could find someone that wouldn’t mind him and Parker having weekend puppy play dates... that...would be perfect.” He grins, “Have anyone coming to mind?”

The last time they had done anything close, was when they’d traveled outside of town for a lacrosse game with their team, and after the first night of them staying in the same room, he’d ended up having to share a room with the coach for the rest of the trip. “Do you not remember how that turned out last time?” He asks, and frowns. Well. They had both changed over the last few years, right? and It would be good to not have to travel on his own. Not to mention, Hayden would probably really appreciate seeing another familiar face from Beacon.  Okay. Yeah. LA in general did sound like a hell of a good time . He’d always wanted to check out the  beachfront parties there. “Yeah,” Lips curl into a small grin, eyes looking down at the ground. “It does sound like a pretty good time.”He says, blue eyes looking up to Brett. “We can catch the bus right after school on Friday, come back Sunday evening. That way we can both get as much time as we can with her.” @bretttal​

clear blue eyes turn to liam, and he nods without hesitation. brett is so excited to see hayden in LA that rooming with liam becomes less than an issue. liam is obviously wary, and for good reason.

“ last time was last time. this time is this time. ” brett grins hopefully. they didn’t get along before, but now they have a common goal. what could go wrong?

fast forward to friday — nothing seems to work out right. firstly, liam was late and almost missed the bus; secondly, brett forgot his headphones and had to engage in conversation for the entire ride; thirdly, the hotel they booked seems to be haunted.

the place looks weathered, and the receptionist gives them a blank stare before handing over a keycard to their room. the walls have patterns that look like faces, and brett doesn’t dare make eye contact.

“ …so is this why it was so cheap? ” when they are waiting for the lift, brett mumbles under his breath, trying his best not to notice the stains on the carpet.

DING — the lift slowly opens its doors in front of them. brett swallows. “ have you ever seen 1408? ” he asks. “ if the corridor stretches too long, we’re leaving. ”

“It’s not that bad.” He bluffs, but - not very well, because you can practically see the concern written in his eyes. “We’re pretty central, so- it’ll be easy to get around town.” He says with a shrug as they were waiting for the lift. “-and it includes breakfast.” but boy- was he hoping that breakfast didn’t turn out like that one disturbing dining scene from Scary Movie 2 now.

He’s trying to keep his cool, and act like he doesn’t mind, because he didn’t need to basically admit to Brett that he might have fucked up. As they get into the elevator, he looks up at Brett with raised eyebrows. "Do I even want to ask what it’s about?” Elevator doors close, the lift shaking a little more than it should have, a metal squeaking sound coming from the top, as if the suspension cables hadn’t received a good maintenance in a while.  He leans into the back of the elevator as it starts to go up to their floor, hands grasping tight onto the handle bar on it- his hold only tightening as the elevator comes to a stop- not on their floor- and the lights shut off. “Okay.” He starts to say. “It’s- officially the worst hotel choice now.” He admits, and as he does so, the lights start to flicker back on. Though there might have been light in the small space, the color on Liam’s face is completely gone now- pale as milk and bones, because his blue eyes are gazing up into the nearly dead looking eyes of a girl that had not been standing in there with them a minute ago. “...Please. Tell me this is one really fucked up prank.” @bretttal​
