this wasn’t okay. none of this was okay. he didn’t expect anyone to actually die. he just felt sick, trying hyperventilating just a little as he heard brendon speak up again from next to him. and all yuchan could do was dumbly nod his head. “i.. noticed she hadn’t come out… so i went to check on her,” he swallowed, slowly recounting what had happened, “the door was unlocked and i opened it and she was-” he broke off. he really didn’t think he needed to explain what he had just seen, it was the exact same thing brendon had just opened the door to. 

“fucking hell,” he breathed out, the words happening to come out in english instead of korean. yuchan pushed himself away from the wall, finally looking up from his feet as he glanced towards brendon. “what.. are we supposed to do? she killed herself, right? no one could have actually… hoisted her up there, yeah?” 

“…I-I don’t know…” Brendon held his hands together to try to stop them from shaking. He had the same line of reasoning as Yuchan; from what he saw, Moon would usually be the first one to respond to any sort of text message so when he asked if anyone was alive…well.

And now this. Maybe Yuchan was right: Moon did kill herself and maybe this was—Moon’s growler messages did line up and she—h.

“…shouldn’t we tell the others about what happened?” He suggested,

“It. It might be best if we did…”

“i was going to ask what all this commotion about, but I think the announcement just now answers that question...” it doesn’t take long from monogoma’s voice leave’s the speakers of the school until hyojin shows up from within his own hut nearby.

“do any of you two know what happened? are you just going to stand there and gawk? shouldn’t we... get her down or something?” honestly it leaves a bad taste in his mouth to leave her hanging like this, but he cannot exactly say he knows how to behave in a situation like this. is cutting the rope an obstruction of the scene?

This is good, right? That stupid bear had made a bet, they’d all called his bluff and in the end, he’d backed down. Hwiyoung couldn’t help but smirk to himself when he’d heard the announcement, though there was a lingering sense of unease that Monogoma was somehow stringing them along anyways.

Hwiyoung might be simple minded, but he was not unintelligent.

Sitting on his bed, mindlessly fiddling with a plushie he’d found the other day, Hwiyoung almost the misses the subtle movement of the cup’s string, only catching it out of the corner of his eye. With a soft laugh at his mentor’s insistence on such a dumb way to communicate, Hwiyoung scrambles off his bed and pads over to the cup, fixing a smile onto his face and pushing away his unease.

There’s no point in both of them being on edge, after all.

Lifting the phone to his ear, Hwiyoung’s expression falters a little at the tone of Hyojin’s voice and he flounders for a moment before giving off what he hopes is an airy laugh in response to the other’s cautiousness.

“Haha, I heard it! Can ya believe it sunbaenim? That dumb bear actually thought we’d kill someone?!”

almost holding his breath, it practically feels like minutes pass before he hears the sound of the scrambling phone line and the other’s voice coming through. relief immediately fills his chest for although hyojin has been occupied with his own things, hwiyoung is the first who enters his mind when he worries. he smiles a bit, praising himself lucky the other cannot see him and poke fun at him right now.

it seems however that they do not share the same mindset about the passing of things. hyojin wishes he could be as optimistic as hwiyoung is, but he cannot. that silly boy doesn’t seem to realise how grave the situation actually is.

lips parting against the cup phone he inhales for a moment, barely daring to voice the thoughts he has in his mind. “but what if we did, though?” he asks. “what if we did kill someone?”

following the announcement, hyojin cannot say he feels anything but emptiness and concern. it can only mean one thing after all, and with heavy steps he removes himself from the bed and crosses the floor to the cup string phone that is placed upon his desk. he tugs a bit at the string so the other end will hopefully notice he is trying to get in touch. then allowing a bit of time to pass, he calls into the phone. “did you hear that announcement just now?”

he knows in his heart he’ll get a response. has to get one. but what will he do if he doesn’t...?

“Nn? My role…?”

For a moment, Hwiyoung’s fear and anxiety is wiped away to be replaced by an expression of confusion as he misunderstands that other’s words. Was Hyojin trying to say he’d something with all of this? Surely not! As much as he felt himself to be a burden and as much as he resented the world for how it had treated him and the parents who specifically chosen him to be their precious child, Hwiyoung had never ever entertained the idea of wanting to ruin people’s lives like this to make himself feel better.

Wanted to beat them up, sure. But never harm someone to this extent.

It’s only when a hand reaches up on rest in his messy hair and stroke softly does Hwiyoung realize exactly what Hyojin had been implying and he flushes red with the shame of such thoughts entering his head in the first place. God, he must really be overdue on maintenance if that was the first place his mind was going. After a second of fighting with his emotions, he leans into the other’s hand with a soft sigh, closing his eyes and letting Hyojin’s words wash over him.

“Nnn… that’s right… ‘M sunbaenim’s doll, after all, aren’t I?” he mumbles, biting his lip a little. While he’d rather not kill anyone, if Hyojin felt it would be a way to get them both home safely, then who was Hwiyoung to argue? Besides, the elder was probably talking about whoever was behind this whole mess in the first place, right?

“Ah, but ya can’t really call me your ‘little doll’ anymore, sunbaenim.” As though a cloud has suddenly evaporated, Hwiyoung’s shoulders relax a little and a smile that’s both cheeky and a little nervous appears on his lips as he issues a rare challenge to his mentor’s authority.

“I mean…. no matter what way ya look at it. I’m taller than ya now, sunbaenim.”

a slight smile appears on his face at the acknowledgement coming from the other. it kind of reassures him that even in these circumstances nothing has changed, hwiyoung is still the same hwiyoung, and he is still the same hyojin. the worst part about this, the puppeteer fears, is losing oneself.

however, not only a moment later does the other dare have the audacity to be cocky. let it be said that hyojin does not have a complex with his height and honestly he couldn’t care less that the younger had one day overtaken him, but did he enjoy having it rubbed in like this? no way. brow twitching a bit, he pinches the other’s neck with the hand he is still holding against the soft skin of hwiyoung’s nape.

“what was that you said?” he insists, pulling downwards to force the other to his knees. “i thought i heard you saying something that suggests height somehow has something to do with your worth in life, but surely that must have been my imagination.” okay maybe he does have a complex, but only a slight one.

“surely my cute, little, doll wouldn’t suggest that i am short, would he?”

Usually, Hwiyoung has complete trust in the elder, believing him infallible. Normally a single word from Hyojin would be enough to settle him down and ease his fears, if only temporarily. At any other time, he’d have no problem with buying into Hyojin’s grandiose claims of superiority and (falsified) self-confidence.

But this isn’t ‘any other time’, it’s not normal. What’s normal about being locked into your school to be told by a plushie that if you wanted to get out, you were gonna have to kill the people you’d been sharing classes with just the day before?!

Instead, Hwiyoung bites down on his lip as the wish to believe his mentor without hesitation wars with his (sometimes fleeting) rationality of the situation. He doesn’t want to outright correct the other, but surely even Hyojin could see this wasn’t a straightforward situation.

“Y-y’think so? ‘Cause, I dunno, sunbaenim… I mean! It’s not that I doubt ya or anything, I’d never doubt ya! But, maybe…. Maybe this is somthin’ that even you can’t…”

He trails off before bowing his head with another whine, gripping hard at his elbows once more.

Maybe it is that simple…. maybe he’s just more broken than he’d thought.

hyojin is a man who is all about pretense; always has been and always will be. of course he doesn’t think everything is fine and of course hwiyoung knows that much, but if hyojin doesn’t have his air of superiority about him, his sharp demeanour, then what does he have? after all, in the end he is nothing much when it really comes down to it. just a weirdo who thinks too highly of himself.

biting down hesitantly on his lip, the performer tries to think what could possibly go on inside that wretched head of his mentee. “could it be,” he begins, words quiet, more hesitant than he would have liked. “are you wondering about your own role in this?” he clicks his tongue quickly as a frown appears on his face. the other is, after all, naught but a puppet, purpose simply to do the biding of his master. it is not surprising that he is worked up over this, questioning his own existence and importance in these happenings.

“silly boy,” hyojin continues, letting his fingers run up to the other’s nape and tangle with the taller’s disheveled hair. “my little, imperfect doll. by whose strings do you dance? do you move by that wretched creature’s paws? i think not.”

his logic is full of flaws, makes no sense in fact to anyone but the boy before him. but hyojin hopes it will do the deal in calming the other down, because even if he would never admit to it, he hates to see hwiyoung distressed. “if you are wondering if you will end up in a situation where you have to kill, know that it will only happen so by my command.”

“Sunbaenim! Sunbaenim, yer okay!”

Hwiyoung was still utterly bewildered. It seemed like only a few days ago that everything had been perfectly fine, as normal as could be. He’d been going about his morning routine as usual when a sudden wave of dizziness and nausea had hit him like a train.

When he’d opened his eyes again he was in a classroom that looked both familiar yet utterly alien at the same time. Why were there shutters on the windows and cameras gawking straight at him?!

And why the hell was this (admittedly adorable) bear saying that they were all locked in and they had to kill someone to get out?! How could all of this have happened in the time it took to blink?!

Running a hand through his messy hair in frustrations, Hwiyoung forgot himself for a moment, grabbing Hyojin’s arm and shaking it in agitation.

“D’you think it’s true, Sunbaenim?! That we’re stuck in here unless we….? I- I tried calling my mom but there’s no signal… I can’t…” he started to whine, letting go of the older boy’s arm to clutch at his own, digging in hard with his nails as his breathing began to pick up speed.

“I can’t… P-people aren’t gonna leave us here forever, right?! It’s just a joke, they wouldn’t just… just throw me away again, would they?! Sunbaenim?!”

usually he would tell the other to be quiet, to stop using that grating voice of his when he is trying to focus, but this time, hyojin cannot simply shrug off hwiyoung’s approach. not when he knows the guy so well and knows what he must be going through right now. words only serve to affirm his concerns as hwiyoung is dangerously close to an anxiety attack. hyojin has them himself, but in different ways: he at least can detain himself until he is no longer in a public place, but his protege has still much to learn he supposes.

“don’t be silly,” are the first words that leaves his mouth in respond to the other’s concerns. “of course i am okay.” there is absolutely no reason for hyojin to be so self assured, but he shows absolutely no hesitation in answering. this however, is obviously not enough to halt the onslaught of emotion the other is feeling, so hyojin puts an index finger to his lips.

“shh.” the silencing is brief but loud enough to be heard. “i cannot possibly begin to understand what goes on in the minds of such vulgar people who would set up a twisted game like this, but mark my words.”

with pride he holds his fingertips against his chest and raises his head, sticking his nose in the sky. “as long as i breathe, no one in this school will perish. i will not let anyone die in here. this bear will not be getting his will, no matter what. don’t you worry your silly little head, yoo hwiyoung.”

as one of the youngest students at the academy she feels as if people are constantly on her about being safe and being with a partner at all times. it’s not that chuu is a natural lone wolf. she can just.. be a bit much at times and it makes people steer clear of her. though she wants to make friends because in these situations only power in numbers work out. 

chuu knows she should be more wary of people who want to get close to her, you know.. especially in such a delicate situation. for some reason her new environment didn’t change this creature of habit. chuu was a morning person through and through, stayed up all night only to wake up right away. it wasn’t really healthy per se. “hmm..?” she says with a smile as she sees the hyojin approaching her, “hyojin oppa wow you’re here early with me?” it’s almost she didn’t notice the slight scolding in the older boy’s voice. 

“i mean i’m not alone now right? i can’t help i’m such a morning person!” chuu says with a cheery expression and gestures to the seat in front of her. “please please please please say you’ll have breakfast with me!” her small eyes pleading with him and a pout forming on her lips. 

enthusiasm is far from what he expects in the other, but somehow this girl seems... happy? to see him even though he doesn’t recollect ever having much to do with her. it is simply out of a sense of duty as someone older he feels obligated to ensure the safety of those younger than him. especially one so young.

annoyingly enough, she does have a point though. and now that hyojin has been the one to suggest she shouldn’t remain alone, he has no real option but to join her. a groan leaves him as that was not how he had intended to spend his morning, but even so, he accepts. “very well. i’m no knight in shining armour, but i will at least make sure that nothing happens to you while i’m here.” rather, they would have to get through him first, not that that was much of an assurance, but he made an effort. beside, how could he possibly reject those doe eyes begging him for company?

securing himself a lone croissant from the buffet, only half a thought granted towards who or what was actually keeping them fed, he rejoined the girl and sat down opposite her, arms crossed. “beware of becoming a creature of habit, girl,” he warned. “habits are much easier to intercept than otherwise.”

a week has come to pass with no seemingly strange endeavours happening other than the occasional unwanted visit from the bear that calls itself monogoma. although it feels like the calm before a storm, hyojin can only hope that it will remain in such a way -- no occurrences that could potentially be life endangering. personally he is starting to accept this new life as reality and although it inconveniences him that he cannot contact the outside world, at least there is no need to worry about things like starvation or lacking any personal needs from the looks of it. 

of course there is no way he can expect for his own content to apply to other people though, and one particular individual has worried him since the day of the announcement. and when he spots the boy roaming about the hallways, hyojin has to inquire.

“hong jisoo,” he calls out the other’s full name. it is a habit never to get too close to people, and familiarising himself with others further than this would count as such. 

admittedly the guy doesn’t look like he’s about to keel over any longer, but hyojin believes one can never be too certain. “how are you holding up? hopefully no plans of murder any time soon.” although an attempt at jesting, he was very serious in his statement and certainly hoped it not to be the case.

“…Okay chill.” Brendon sighed, rubbing his face in irritation. Good fucking lord he is about to smack this guy’s face with his feet if he doesn’t quit it–

“I’m not out here to destroy your shit, I’m just saying–just why? Are you really that scared of someone listening onto your conversations? You don’t have to tell me like, your life story just…Maybe–you know what?” he holds his hands up in surrender, “Never fuckin’ mind. Doesn’t matter what I say to you, you’ll just brush it off.”

confusion evidently fills his visage with every word the other speaks. somehow it sounds like hyojin is at fault here, which he cannot understand why is the case. this is why he hates dealing with people -- when he’s on stage, at least he has a character to adhere to, a script to go by. everything goes according to what is written. it’s not like that with real conversations and it confuses him when people act in ways he cannot comprehend. he wants to keep quiet, feels like he should keep quiet but---

while being locked in his school by some freaking teddy bear was the weirdest thing to happen to him, kangmin still found life going on as usual. the only thing he would really miss was his mother, the rest of the outside world could perish for all he cared. it had never really done anything for him, people were just too exhausting to deal with on a daily basis and kangmin was more than happy just to lock himself away of his own violation half the time. the only difference was the small nagging at the back of his head that some of the others might actually take the ‘murder’ incentive a little too literally. 

the laundry room was usually pretty quiet, the perfect place to hide away in a corner and not be bothered for the day if you were i the mood. and he had been planning to do just that himself, though when he came in he did see what he could only imagine was someone having a mental breakdown under a blanket in the middle of the floor. just another perfectly normal day, then. he was going to just ignore the breakdown victim, though what he didn’t expect was the fucking weird ass doll in the other boy’s hand to turn towards him and then the supposed ventriloquism to make it talk. 

“dude, put that weird ass doll down and speak like a normal person. it’s fucking creepy,” and he was not going to be taking part in that nonsense and having a conversation with a curly haired ventriloquist doll. 

although he supposes it is a very natural reaction, somehow it is not what hyojin was expecting to be met with. to have some kid speak back to him who is obviously the senior in both life and school, and even more so to speak in such a crude way when there’s a lady present! to call his dear mademoiselle a ‘creepy ass doll’: now that is almost enough to have him snap back at this kid and make him apologise. almost. but he doesn’t. instead he makes the doll cock her head and continues speaking through her.

“now now, kangmin ssi, there’s no need to get upset or worked up. i’m sure everyone is quite taken aback by everything happening, and we have to deal with it in our own ways. don’t think too bad of hyojin ah please.” mentioning his own name in third person hyojin clutches at the cloth embracing him for a moment before he decides to discard it and rise. for a moment a stern glance is granted the newcomer before he scoffs and turns his head.

“forget it, mademoiselle. there is no need to waste breath on uncultured people. i am ashamed to have let you see me in such a state, kid. please forget what you have seen here today.”

Things have been a bit slow on here and updating the ml which I'm sorry for. I've had some struggles which have resulted in me deciding to drop out of school, so that's a thing. I'm omw to turn in the papers now and that'll hopefully give me more mental freedom and more energy to actually do stuff

Chin-Mae might be a good vocalist, but he knew absolutely nothing about electronics. He was the type of person who called his boyfriend the second his television acted funny. So when the printer in the computer lab refused to print out his new song lyrics he didn’t know what to do. Chin-Mae nudged the printer with his foot and smacked the top of the machine with his hands. Maybe he shouldn’t be damaging school property. After all, he didn’t want to get on the bad side of whoever set up this game. 

“I can’t get this silly thing to work.” He glanced over at the poor person standing outside the room. “Could you fix it for me?” Chin-Mae leaned against the printer looking at the other with boredom in his eyes. “I’m trying to print out the lyrics to my newest song. You see, I’ve decided to start creating my new album. It will be based on my time held captive in this horrible place.” The vocalist still clung onto the assumption that the current circumstance was some kind of joke. Whoever was in charge of this place should let them go soon, right?

it has only been mere days and the reality of his new life is slowly starting to sink in. perhaps he is too quick to judge, but it seems more peaceful than he had hoped for, no one ready to start a revolution inside the school or anything of the sort. mainly confusion, wariness and annoyance, but those are emotions he can live with. as he goes about the daily, hyojin himself has finally decided to try explore whether the place really is as sealed off as it presents itself as, and in doing so his feet have brought him to the computer room. unfortunately to no other avail than some person he recognises as a fellow fourth year student suddenly requesting his help.

“what?” he says, voice rather more grumbling than he intended for it to be, but hyojin is by no means what one would consider a social butterfly, especially not when taken by surprise. does he know how to fix it? not really. he approaches anyway, a hesitant sideways glance shot at the other before he stares down at the printer and its seemingly endless amount of buttons. “for starters, stop hitting it,” he offers unhelpfully. “i’d really not have that weird thing show up and do whatever he pleases with you if you break it.” just imagining it is enough to send shivers down his spine. somehow that bear creature is creepy and hyojin would rather not try to go against it. “then i guess... have you tried turning it off and on again?”

it is no secret to anyone who knew hyojin that there is a huge difference between his charisma when on stage and his complete awkwardness off. when performing, he’s capable to taking on any persona, to marvel and inspire and bring out emotions in others, but when he is just kim hyojin he barely even knows what to do with himself sometimes. especially not in a situation like this. he doesn’t think anyone could actually follow the order -- doesn’t hope so -- but there is always the worry of what if: that’s the dangerous thing about suggestion; no matter how ridiculous it may sound, if someone actually takes it seriously, no matter how illogical it sounds it will be reality. 

beside, can he say for certain that he won’t be the one eventually pushed to such bounds?

entering the cafeteria the moment it opens is a habit to early waker hyojin, but it seems he’s not the only one there. a small girl he barely knows other than for having seemingly endless bouts of energy is sitting within, and he mouths an inaudible ‘ah’, hesitation overtaking him before he decides to enter. it’s so stupid. how could he have worried about being alone with someone even if it was only for a moment?

walking a few paces to come closer, he steps up to the girl, chuu (what a strange moniker), and looks down at her seated figure. “girl,” hyojin begins in a stern voice. “you shouldn’t be alone this early.”

the thing about being stuck in school is that the thought of that isn’t actually too bad. it isn’t that hyojin has any particular incredible fondness for his classes and his peers other than the norm, but neither does he have many such relations on the outside, and thus it’s a matter of one or the other being pretty alike if you were to ask him. no. that’s not the reason he is sitting on the floor in the laundry room with the lights turned off and a blanket over his head.

he wants to think of everything as some elaborate joke gone too far, but somewhere deep in his mind, he cannot help but wonder the same thing over and over again: what if? what if someone actually takes it seriously? unfortunately his moment of loneliness and self reflection is broken when the door is opened and some random kid steps in. hyojin knows him by name and face, but not much beyond that, having nothing much to do with the high school section. and he can’t help but feel miserable over how pathetic he must look in front of this kid right now.

fingers giving mademoiselle a squeeze, he moves the doll to face the intruder rather than try to catch his gaze himself, and with unmoving lips and a higher pitch than he would usually speak in, he breaks the silence. “you’re yoo kangmin, aren’t you? please forgive hyojin ah, he’s having a bit of a moment. what did you come here for? can i help you with anything?”
