Call me a stickler but I'm genuinely so upset about Namor's new design in Doomsday

This is exactly what I was afraid of when I found out the Russo's were gonna be brought on for this movie. He looks like 2 white guys with nostalgia bait in mind were in charge of his costume design.

No nose piercing.

No earrings.

No traditional jewelry or garb of any kind.

And he looks to be wearing layers of clothes which makes zero sense for his character since he literally breaths through his skin.

The outfit looks to just be one big reference to comic Namor with little thought put in for the MCU character and this makes me super uneasy about how he's gonna be written.

I understand if the Russo Brothers wanted creative freedom to make an updated look for the character…that’s fine, but they need to respect the work that came before and the reasoning for it.

His jewelry: not only are the pieces made of an mix of Jade and Vibranium, in Mayan culture his jewelry shows his status as King and his authority and power in his society. (His earrings and collar are specific accessories meant for Mayan Elite). Not only that, but the Maya associate Jade with the Divine (as he is the prophesied king of Talokan and was named after a deity K’ uk’ ulkan). His Jewelry also provides spiritual protection and may be involved in rituals…Let’s not also forget that Namor is so anti colonizer, that it’s a no-brained that the man would wear his jewels as a way to display pride in his culture and defiance against those from the surface.

In short, the man had drip. As it befits his status.

His Clothing: The costume designers for Wakanda Forever (lead by Oscar winner and legend Ruth Carter) put great effort to reference Native American (specifically Maya) tribal designs. His poncho, his dress (I cannot find the name of the actual garment. I’m sorry) his half shoulder robe, his skirt (I know it has a specific name, again, sorry) his various necklaces and shoulder pieces, even his ceremonial dress with his hand-carved-by-weta-artists headdress…There’s a reason these costumes are in display at museums, people. Because they are that amazing and beautiful, and rich in patterns and textures.

Now we have what seems to be layers of clothing (which we’ve seen Namor wear before, but nothing in fabric this stiff) which doesn’t allow for much movement under water and may hinder combat. So not only does that make no sense we’ve also removed his piercings and the cultural and spiritual significance that goes along with it. Ryan put so much effort to not only give a good antagonist, but to give actually good Native American representation, which is a rarity onto itself. (I’ve been told that people of the Maya population are very happy with this movie). So much so, that in the movie, the Talokanil speak Yucatec Mayan (Namor’s tribe is from Yucatán). Even the name Talokan derives from Tlalocan (one of the Aztec afterlives) but since Mayan doesn’t have that verbal sound they change it to ‘Talokan’. All of these details and analogs to real life Native American culture actually make Namor seem more grounded and real. Now we just got a guy with a really high collar who looks like a 70’s cartoon supervillain. (Can you tell I hate that collar yet?)

I feel like they just decided to disrespect the designers of WF and their work to represent Mayan Culture through the lens of a colored director and to tell a story about the real life effects and trauma of colonization, because…..we want to make a reference to the comic, I guess.

If I’m being honest (based on leaked footage) that coat looks soo generic in both color and material. It’s like they just went and got something at the Marvel studio costume warehouse and gave him that. Now he just looks like a forced gritty/edgy/dark/serious version of the charismatic character we got in a previous film….

Besides, why do we have to change his costume so much but Winston Duke playing M’baku can get away with wearing similar costumes for 3 movies (including IW) and the same haircut for 4. And Mabel Cardona’s (Namora) costume didn’t see any changes from what’s in the trailer.

Now, with that being said, costume changes are inevitable and these updates are meant to show the passage of time. I recognize that we only got glimpses of Namor so they may end up changing things or maybe the jacket is so he can “blend in better. Honestly, I sincerely hope that this is a Namor from an alternate universe. I really do. (And even then, this version doesn’t look particularly interesting, visually.) I don’t want them to take one of the most interesting antagonists in the MCU (definitely the best one since Loki and Killmonger) and turn him into a generic background supporting character.

I reeeeeeeally hope that the trailer showed a Namor from a different universe. because, what the hell is this?? What have they done to him??

Where is his jewelry? His headpiece? Are those fish scales?! And a belt buckle and arm braces depicting waves?!!

He looks like a generic action figure designed by Mattel or a character from the Aquaman movies/DC universe. Are we that depleted of creativity? They really traded in an already excellent design for a white-washed generic design with blue fish scales?

Like this is an honest disrespect to Ruth Carter’s and Weta’s amazing work. They could’ve used the other concepts done in BP2, if the actor wanted to be more covered up, or if they wanted to do a different concept, too.

Now, I don’t want to get ahead of myself before seeing the movie. But they’re not giving me too much hope here. It seems to me that Namor is getting the Thor treatment where his rich heritage and culture is going to be replaced by some generic cool looking costume that has nothing to do with the character’s story.

I read that in real life, Clavel murdered Palma's family was ordered by AFO right?

Sooooooooo. That’s a bit complicated and has its own story, but basically Miguel Angel ordered it and the Arellano Felix made it happen.

So this started in 1987, and according to word on the streets of Culiacán is that Palma (hyped up by his Colombian and Venezuelan partners) was starting to form a business with Chapo (who was introduced to him by Felix) in secret to move cocaine using the Federation’s routes without giving them a commission or toll. (Some accounts disagree and claim that Güero kept/or stole a few kilos of cocaine of cocaine. Maybe up to 100 kilos. So he could go and sell that on the side and get money on the side without paying Felix his dues. Others say that he had lost a cocaine shipment…which is kind of unlikely.) Something to remember is that this happens in 1987, two years after the whole Kiki Camarena fiasco, so at this point Miguel Angel isn’t the cool and calm business man that preferred to use violence as a last resort that he used to be. At this point, Miguel Angel is a paranoid and bad-tempered man. He was basically hot-headed and dangerous. So when he found out that Palma and Chapo were moving merchandise behind his back without paying their piso to Miguel, he got furious and set out to punish Güero and Chapo and make an example of them. Starting with Güero Palma.

Miguel Angel, through the Arellano Felix family as a middle man, contracted a Venezuelan sicario named Enrique Rafael Clavel Moreno to (as ridiculous as it sounds) infiltrate the Sinaloa Cartel and seduce Güero’s wife, Guadalupe Laija Serrano, to take her out of the country. He was first introduced to Lupe through Güero’s sister Minerva, who was dating him and knew him as someone doing their post-grad in Culiacán (because Clavel had studies in business admin). The plan was a success and Lupe fell hook, line and sinker for Clavel’s charms. In 1989, while Güero was too distracted with business (and perhaps jail), Clavel was able to convince Lupe to go to the US together and to take her two children (a 4-year-old girl named Natalie and a 5-year-old boy named Hector).

For some reason, the show didn’t depict the actual way in which they were killed. (This is what I mean when I say that the show missed opportunities where fact was even more shocking than fiction). In June of 1989, the couple and children flew to San Diego California, where Lupe stole an estimated $2 million dollars from her husband’s account (it’s thought that Lupe thought that they were going to run away together..other say it was a vacation.) There, on June 20th in a motel room in California, Clavel tied her up in what seems to be sex toy handcuffs, choked her unconscious and decapitated Lupe while she was still alive (other sources say he fought her before he was able to decapitate her) and sent Güero her head in an ice cooler directly to his house. (This is actually more accurately depicted in the chapo series from Univision) Güero was broken and consumed with grief and was made aware that Clavel took his spouse and was working at the behest of the Arellano Felix. Then, on July 19th, (this is so weird because I’m writing this on July 19th……spooky) Clavel took the children to the Concordia bridge in Tachira, Venezuela and threw the still-living children off the bridge down a 150 meter (492 feet) drop to their deaths. But that’s not all. Clavel had filmed the children’s deaths and sent the vhs tape to an already grieving and widowed Güero, driving him further into grief, rage and needing vengeance.

This murder effectively shook the narco world and changed it. After that, wives, children, parents; everyone was fair game. At least the Narcos series gives it the gravitas and importance it deserved.

Is it related to feud between Chapo and AFO?

It is. In the sense that it became one of the many things the Arellano Felix family did to provoque the war between Sinaloa and Tijuana. This in particular causes a very seismic shift in Narco ethics and codes of conduct, because back then you normally didn’t go after the women and children. Only the people involved in the Narco business were killed (generally) and the family was left to mourn them. It’s why Felix was never worried that Pedro Aviles would go after his children, but was offended when Pedro told Felix that he wouldn’t tell his family where he was buried or how he was killed (to avoid a vengeance killing but also taking away their right to mourn properly). It was part of the old codes. The Arellano Felixes broke that and left Güero Palma with a choice to make; either he does the same or he upholds the old codes that were already broken by the Arellano Felix. In the end, this also made Güero more committed to Chapo’s cause (cause he already wanted to kill the Arellano Felix for another murder and had asked permission to do so). This led to the famous shootout at Christine’s in November of 1992 with Chapo and Güero (with Mayo’s help) inviting the Tijuana leadership there to try to kill an unsuspecting Benjamin, Ramon and Francisco, who were there to negotiate a truce. Nine people died but they all survived by hiding in the bathroom and later escaping through the kitchen. (I don’t know why the show didn’t depict it that way)

Did Palma revenge them?

Yes he did. So once his children were discovered, Palma recuperated their bodies and gave his family a proper funeral before he laid them to rest them in a pantheon he commissioned for them, worth around half a million dollars at the time in Culiacán. The photo is the pantheon’s ceiling with the family’s portrait painted there among marble columns.

He then set out on a path of vengeance kill bill style. So he got his South American contact to work to find Clavel. This proved to be rather easy because the police were doing their own investigation into the two children found dead by the river and found and arrested Clavel. Clavel was arrested and tried, where he narrated the events with chilling detail; explaining that Lupe and him had a fight and that she was going to go back to her husband. Clavel was found guilty of femicide and infanticide, with psychologists diagnosing him as a psychopath sociopath with perverted tendencies. He was sentenced and was killed on may 19th, 1991, in an escape attempt (which people believe was orchestrated by Güero because of the weird circumstances of his death).

During this time, Güero took the famous “an eye for an eye” approach to revenge, so he set out to end his bold line and went after Clavel’s family and killed off his three children one by one in very violent ways where the bodies were dismembered. Effectively breaking a code followed by Mexican narcos for generations. It’s said that it was so graphic and terrible that only Güero was shown the photos of the murders .

But he didn’t stop there. He basically declared the Arellano Felixes to be non grata and ordered his men to kill anyone related to the Arellano Felixes. (Later that year he finds out Felix had given the order, but because Felix was in jail, he couldn’t go after him, so he focused on the Arellanos). This led Güero to torture and kill 9 members of the Arellano Felix family ( a woman among the victims, crossing the lines set), 3 of Clavel’s lawyers and a lawyer that worked for the Arellanos. He also hired 3 policemen to kill Norma Corona, a lawyer that was investigating the strange deaths caused by Güero Palma.

Once he realized that he couldn’t go after Felix himself, even in jail, Güero did the next best thing and went after any relative of Felix he could. He killed several (approx 6) members of Felix’s family (including his mother-in-law) and 2 of his lawyers, if I remember correctly.

In their heyday, does Guadalajara Cartel and Gulf Cartel co-exist 'peacefully'? Thank you

That’s difficult to say because they peaked in different decades.

So first of all, I want to clarify that what people now refer to as the “Guadalajara Cartel” was not a cartel at all. This is just a short hand way to reference the Federation of traffickers that was based in Guadalajara, Jalisco. But these organizations had full autonomy of their operations and worked together. It’s not like the show depicts with Miguel Angel controlling everything. In fact, Miguel Angel couldn’t tell or order the members what to do, he had to convince and negotiate with them (At least this is how Rafael describes it.). As opposed to The Gulf Cartel which was a single criminal organization with a clear leader.

With that said, during the 70’s and the 80’s drug trafficking in Mexico was very centralized (almost monopolized) by the Federation. During that time the Gulf cartel was lead by Juan N. Guerra and was a small organization. At that time, the Gulf cartel wasn’t even in competition with the Federation because they worked in a whole different industry, mainly gambling, prostitution rings, human trafficking, illegal contraband and a network dedicated to car thefts.

In other words, the gulf and the federation were in different industries. So they did co-exist peacefully. Mainly because the gulf cartel was a very small organization that didn’t even work in the same field as the giant Federation. So there’s no competition or comparison.

This changed in the late 80’s and really in the mid 90’s. When Juan Garcia Abrego inherited the leadership of the Gulf Cartel, he decided to pivot to cannabis and cocaine, negotiating directly with the Cali cartel. That’s when the gulf started to really grow, by getting paid in cocaine, instead of per trip. During this decade, the Gulf cartel, under Juan’s leadership was valued at $10 billion. ( which is a lot for an organization of their size, but not even near what the Federation made). But keep in mind that by this time the Federation had dissolved and splintered, and the gulf was moving up to a third of all the coke going into the USA.

Juan was captured in ‘96 and leadership went to Osiel Cardenas, who then had to deal with rival cartels like Juarez and Sinaloa. Because of the fear of these rivals that Osiel hired Mexican military deserters to form his personal bodyguard. (These men later became the Zetas)

So, these two organizations had their heydays in different times. Its more fair to compare the gulf at its peak with fellow rivals like Juarez, Sinaloa, or Tijuana. And if that’s the case, they didn’t co-exist peacefully at all. In fact, even association to a rival cartel could get you killed in Tamaulipas or Gulf territory (even in jail).

Anyways, sorry for my long rant. I hope I gave you a good answer 🙂

Oh yeah!

You can’t really talk about Mexican drug history without mentioning china. You also got the opium wars between china and Europe, but Latin America is in there too. Plus you also got the Chinese connection specifically between Sinaloa and Shanghai (who are essential to their operations). You also got the sam gor, the famous dojin-Kai, the triads. You have the famous golden triangle, which involves Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand (Vietnam and china to a lesser extent). You also have Afghanistan and Pakistan. Not to mention the Narcos of India. And in Europe you have the Italians, the French, the Russians and now the Albanians, who basically control most of the cocaine traffic in Europe.

I got into it because I like watching documentaries but also as research for my fanfic When the dust settles (insert shameless plug). Narcotopia by Patrick Winn is a good place to start if you’re interested.

A show that gets it right is the chapo series on Netflix. The show depicts Sinaloa. Asking connections with Asian manufacturers, and chemists and opening to Asia as a market. Essentially showing that Sinaloa’s resources are international. And it’s true. Mexico is one of the first countries where drug traffickers envisioned and embraced globalism as part of their business model. And Asia by definition is a massive area with a lot of people and a growing luxury market who can (potentially) afford to buy a lot of product. In fact, Asia’s drug trade is thriving in a post COVID world.

I think china is a very interesting country to research on this because they’ve been involved in drug trafficking for (literally) hundreds of years, and in fact play an essential part in a lot of cartel’s operations, but they’ve never been sanctioned (at least to my knowledge) for this because of geopolitics and other countries foreign policy and they relationship to china’s’ manufacturing economy.

What can I say? It’s an industry and an economy that makes the world go round. Globalization and capitalism in a blue sphere.

There’s not much to tell. It’s about the night Javier Arredondo and Jorge Mercado, two university students in the Tec in Monterey were chased, beaten and killed by a group of 6 military soldiers. (You can actually see the security camera footage of them running for their lives towards the university campus.) The soldiers then altered the scene of the crime and gave them guns. At the time, the official story the news outlets ran with was that they were dangerous sicarios who were “armed to the teeth” (hence the movie’s title). Even the president at the time called them criminals. And for a long time they got away with it. It wasn’t until recently that they were charged with homicide and were sentenced to 90 years in prison (out of which they’ll serve 60 at most). 3 of them are serving in a military prison, 2 are in a jail in Nuevo León and 1 is missing 😉 😉. They were also found guilty for identity theft, abuse of authority and police brutality, but aren’t currently serving a sentence for that yet.

No. No cartel was involved or related to this at all.

It’s no problem at all.

So the banner says that it’s a public audience from the national guard. Under that it says that it’s a showing of the 2018 documentary “hasta los dientes”. And this showing is in January 10th, 2019.

If you didn’t know, the documentary is about two students who were framed as criminals by the military and murdered in 2010.

Diego Luna isn’t involved in the film, but he did help give it a platform. Which would explain why he’s there. On the table they also have missing person posters. The largest is of systems engineer Alejandro Moreno Baca who was last seen in 2011.
