5th drabble written for @hrpfdrabbledecember! Prompt was Penalty (via the wheel).
(And yes, it's no longer December, but I'm having fun with these! Might add a teeny bit more to this and pop onto A03 later, this is almost more fic length than a drabble).
Rated: T | Seattle Kraken | Tye Kartye & Ryker Evans | Words: ~600
“You’re lucky you didn’t get a penalty for getting in there,” Tye commented, bumping Ryker’s shoulder and pointing at the replay of the fight after Schwartz got hit into the boards. “Looks like you’ve been watching Dunn a bit too much,” he added, sounding serious but Ryker caught the smirk on his face when he glanced over.
“Got to stick up for our team mates, right?” Ryker shot back, before taking a swig of his beer. Tye had found a new gluten-free beer for them to try a couple weeks back, and it actually tasted good, unlike a lot of other options on the market. It had been a bit of a mission of Tye’s to find beers they could enjoy together and he had been happy to hear that Ryker was enjoying this one, keeping his own fridge stocked with a healthy stash for when Ryker came over to hang.
“Wait, wait!” Tye’s hand shot forward to grab the remote, rewinding the clip. “Did you make a…” and then he paused to make a fish-like pucker motion with his lips, before continuing on, “to Noes?”
Ryker blushed this time, unsure how to respond. His phone had been blowing up all night with friends and family sending him that clip, along with the occasional asshole commentary about it being appropriate for Pride Night. Had he been thinking about how it might look in that way, he might have second-guessed the action…
“Hey, hey, Ry, where’d you go?” Tye asked, and Ryker blinked, unsure of how Tye got from beside him on the couch to down on his knees in front of him, Tye’s hands resting gently on his knees.
“I…I’m not sure,” Ryker said slowly, because he wasn’t, wasn’t sure at all what had happened.
“I asked about Noes and it was like you froze, are you sure you’re okay?” Tye rambled, looking concerned, shifting as though he was about to stand up.
And Ryker wasn’t sure what he was thinking but his hands shot out to grab Tye’s, his fingers gripping tightly as he tried to figure out what was going on in his brain. He didn’t want Tye to go, but he knew he had to say something too. “I’m not gay,” he ended up replying harshly, almost shouting and he knew that wasn’t the right thing to say as he saw the resulting flinch shudder through Tye’s body.
Tye was gay. He had come out to Ryker during their Firebird years, and even got up the nerve to wear the rainbow tape during that night’s game. Ryker was so, so proud of him, and he didn’t mean that the way it sounded, but now Tye was tense, and Ryker swore he saw tears in his eyes, and fuck, he had screwed that up.
“I’m not gay,” Ryker repeated quietly, looking down at his hands clenched on top of Tye’s, unsure why Tye hadn’t pulled away yet. “I think…I think I’m asexual?” he added an even softer tone, unsure if Tye could even hear him at this point. “And I don’t think I actually want to kiss anyone, like maybe ever?”
Ryker had expected Tye to move away at this point, maybe suggest that he should be on his way, that he wasn’t welcome here anymore after that outburst, only to be surprised once again when instead Tye’s arms encircled him.
“Thank you for telling me,” Tye whispered softly into his ear, his arms holding Ryker loosely and Ryker couldn’t stop himself from hugging Tye back, gripping the back of his sweatshirt tightly, not wanting to let go as his tears slowly dampened the front of Tye’s shirt. “And welcome to the other team.”
