Recognizing the girl in the booth, Jalen slid in across from her. “Gross, I don’t,” he admitted before realizing what was in his hand. “Oh, this isn’t for me. There’s this girl who hangs out by the library who pays me for getting these for her sometimes.” He nodded at the drink in her own hand. “What’cha got there yourself?”

Relaxing back against the earthy floor, Eric laid with his headphones on his ears and his arms outstretched above him, holding his latest book within reading distance. With all the noise back home, he found that reading beneath the shade of one of the campus trees was one of the best places he could go without being bothered. It became a sort of escape from the world for just a few before he had work, school, frat business or a combination of all three abhorring his thoughts. Just as he began to doze off, he noticed someone standing above him, mouthing something unrecognizable while he had his earphones on. Sighing, he moved his blocky earphones down to his neck and raised a brow at the person, hoping he didn’t seem like he was just ignoring them.

“ Sorry. Headphones. Start over? ”

“Dang it, Eric,” Jalen sighed. He sat down next to the other guy, mimicking him by leaning against the tree along with him. “I was just asking if we were doing anything later. You know, the brothers,” he repeated. He wasn’t in too much of a rush as he liked to leave himself time to dawdle on his way around, but he still didn’t want to miss the class he might be late to. However, he could never pass on an opportunity to chat with one of the bros.

2am had come and gone so quickly, Gabe was beginning to believe all those conspiracy theories about time not being real. Or whatever. It didn’t really matter while he was hanging from the second story window ledge. Nothing did, besides getting inside. He stuck his fingers in the gap between glass and sill and pushed up hard - proceeding to drag himself inside his empty room. Or what he thought was his room.

“Oh hey.” Gabe laughed, wondering idly if he could pretend he’d been stoned for that whole ordeal. Way less embarrassing. “You’re up kinda late.”

The thud was what woke him up. He barely registered the words the familiar voice relayed to him. He rubbed his eyes and sat up, letting his comforter fall off his bare chest. “Dude, what?” he asked, eventually recognizing Gabe. “Dude,” he said again.

“Well, I am now,” he said, still groggy with fatigue. “You lost, or something? Should I get help? Some fries, maybe?”

The common room was strangely empty for this time of day. The bustling herds of teenage boys could still be heard from within the confines of the room, probably off to whatever romantic rendezvous or extracurricular activity they had chosen to fill their time with. It wasn’t unusual for Ryland to be the only person left with no lingering responsibilities or plans, in fact he liked to ensure it stayed that way. He heard footsteps enter the room and yet he didn’t rush to acknowledge them as he slowly glanced through a book. “Yes believe it or not he reads,” he said, sarcasm lacing his words as he looked up at the person.

Jalen had been out tossing a frisbee with some buddies and came back into the house to study for some of his classes. The last thing he expected to see was Ryland with a book in front of him. “Crap, dude. Didn’t know you could,” Jalen teased, letting himself fall onto his own chair close to his brother. “What’s it called?” he asked, craning his neck to try to get a good look at the cover. “Is it good?”
