In case you didn't know, Hudson Blake is a training and consultation service with core specialism in Learning Disabilities and First Aid. We offer a variety of services and they are all summarised into these 3 categories: Face to Face learning, Inspire and Support. Our most popular include Epilepsy Awareness with Midazolam, First Aid and Medication. We are also releasing our e-Learning platform soon which will allow you to complete training with us from your preferred location! SHARE this to help SAVE a life! You can never be too prepared when it comes to first aid, and last weekend showed the importance it has! As you probably know, Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch whilst playing in Denmark’s opening game. Having received CPR and with access to a defibrillator so quickly after collapsing the expert teams have given him the very best chances of survival and recovery. Here is our step-by-step on how to perform CPR: 1. With children or a drowning adult, you start with 5 initial breaths. 2. Then with everyone, place the heel of your hand on the breastbone at the centre of the person's chest. Place your other hand on top of your hand and interlock your fingers. 3. Position yourself with your shoulders above your hands. 4. Using your body weight (not just your arms), press straight down by 2 to 2.5 inches on their chest. For a child, 2 inches. For an infant, 1.5 inches. 5. Keeping your hands on their chest, release the compression, and allow the chest to return to its original position. 6. Repeat these compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 times a minute until an ambulance arrives or you become exhausted. Breaths can also be included every 30 compressions for drowning adults or children, although due to Covid the HSE does suggest covering the mouth with a cloth. Comment any questions you have below!

Weekly Update

The week started with Jenni delivering a training session, “Participant in financial abuse safeguarding”. Catherine also joined her the next morning for an office day, sorting financial forecasts and signing exciting contracts!

We have also updated our staff portfolios as well as continuing to finish the resource library. Another blog will be posted next week developing this innovative resource library further to provide full context into the utilities it will have.

Importance of a good management team

As we mentioned earlier this week, Catherine is starting an HR course. She hopes to further enhance her many skills, including people-management, decision-making, organisational skills, amongst others.

This does lead to an important topic, that being the importance of a good management team. It is crucial for an organisation like Hudson Blake, to have strong foundations in place regarding the management of its members. It encourages productivity and motivation amongst employees, which in turn has a positive impact on the organisation’s success. It also improves the way the organisation is viewed externally, which can help when recruiting or when attracting new clients.  

For these reasons, we value having a good management team immensely, and we ensure that everyone in these positions has the correct attributes to carry out their role to Hudson Blake’s expectations.

Weekly Update

This is a weekly update designed to provide a deeper insight into Hudson Blake. We plan to post these regularly on a Sunday from this week onwards.

Jenni did Epilepsy and Fire Marshall training last week as well as continuing to get our new E-Learning platform ready. Jenni is also doing a 10-week injury assessment course for First Aid CPD

Catherine booked onto an HR course that she’s starting soon. We’ll post another blog this week highlighting the importance of a good management team.

Importance of a clean working environment

We have just completed the next step of our office renovations! We especially love our new carpets and chairs! Even though our old office was cleaned regularly it was outdated and did not provide the clean and modern feel we were seeking.

There are many benefits to having a clean working environment, and these have been enhanced lately due to the recent pandemic. During this time, we have focused massively on everything remaining spotless to reduce the risks involved in our day-to-day lives.

A clean working environment has also proven to increase motivation amongst our employees, as well as providing a more welcoming and productive environment to our clients. These renovations have also increased our office space which is always a bonus!

The renovations are almost complete, and we will continue to post updates as we apply the finishing touches.

Effective Behaviour Recordings

In this course we look at the function of behaviour, our responses to behaviour and how we can reinforce behaviour.

How the course works:

This course is suited for people working within Learning Disability services. It will run for a duration of 6 hours, allowing time for reflection and analysis.

Course contents:

- Explore the use of tools such as event recordings, ABC (antecedent behaviour consequence) forms and how we complete these with the appropriate level for utilising the information effectively.

- Learn how to analyse and pull information from these so that we can understand the function the behaviour poses.

- Within the recordings we look at language and terminology and defensible documentation should the reports and recordings end up in court.

It’s our birthday!!!

5 years ago today, our director Jenni finished her trainer training and first aid instructor course. On this same day she took her first booking as a sole trader. Moving on 2 years she got a training room and set up Ready2Shine CIC too, a relationship and sex education. After 3 years Hudson Blake became a limited company and hired its first staff an admin support Catherine who quickly moved to Deputy Manager. At 4 years we had our first training instructor Krissy join us followed by Louise and Jake as facilitators. Our most recent additions of Jamie and Kevin as marketing officers. What a journey, from teaching first aid and Epilepsy awareness to now offering Moving & Handling, person centred care, ligature, mental health first aid and soon to be Makaton alongside such an array of other courses to support care staff in their role with people with Learning Disabilities. We have launched Inspire-our education day opportunities for people with Learning Disabilities and similar needs and about to Launch eLearning platform. We survived (we bossed) a pandemic and we have diversified our training to meet the needs of all our learners. We are so grateful for our amazing staff team and learners and each client that has followed our journey! Happy 5th Birthday Hudson Blake!!

Emergency First Aid (including certificate)

First Aid knowledge and skills are extremely valued by individuals and by companies. Having the ability to supply emergency care to a person in need can minimise their injuries and in serious cases, even preserve their life. We take a different approach at Hudson Blake, by creating a fun environment for our learners. We also have updated and modernised equipment that aids learning substantially.

We also provide other First Aid courses that may meet our learners’ requirements, including Paediatric First Aid or a 3-day First Aid at Work course, for treatment in higher risk areas. Others can be found in link to our website below.

How the course works:

We use interactive scenarios, quizzes and our personal work experience to explain first aid holistically. In the 6 hours, learners are assessed by our trainers on delivering first aid to a variety of injuries and realistic scenarios. We then sign off their competency document that we provide, as well as a First Aid certificate.

Epilepsy Awareness with Midazolam

One of Hudson Blake’s most popular courses is Epilepsy Awareness with Midazolam. Understanding, helping and caring for people with epilepsy is important for any workplace or home setting. The safe administration of Midazolam is vital for learners caring for individuals with prolonged or clusters of epileptic seizures.

From this experience, our learners will be able to offer a better care for others. Our course follows the guidelines set out by the ENSA and Royal College of Psychiatrists.

How the course works:

We use interactive scenarios, quizzes and our personal work experience to explain epilepsy holistically. In the 6 hours, learners are assessed by our trainers in a 1:1 simulated situation on safe administration and we then sign off their competency document that we provide. Refresher courses are 4 hours with the option of doing the full 6 hours.

Course Contents:

- Understand what is Epilepsy and its epidemiology.

- Know the causes of Epilepsy and process diagnosis of Epilepsy.

- Recognise the different types of seizures (including Management and First Aid).

- Appreciate the impact of having a long-term condition.

- Effectively record, risk manage and identify support needs.

- Use recording charts and care plans confidently.

- Know the available treatment options and focus on medications, including averse effects and interactions.

- Emergency Medications available and administration.

Weekly Updates

Here we have the first of Hudson Blake’s weekly updates to provide a deeper insight into our company. 

We have partnered up with Unity Care Specialists in a decision that will mutually benefit both companies. Unity Care Specialists provide Temp and Permanent Staff for care settings. 

 In an aim to provide a clearer layout to our “services” section on our website, we are individually adding all of the courses we provide. This week, Mental Health First Aid and Anti Ligature Training. 

Our Lead Trainer has completed her Makaton level 4 (stage 8) course. She is currently being moderated to see if she gets accepted onto the Makaton tutor training. This would allow Hudson Blake to provide Makaton courses!

Epilepsy Week!

It was purple day yesterday and with that in mind, we have been looking at resources for Epilepsy. We came across this awesome Epilepsy awareness video that gives a clear description of what it is and how you can manage seizures such as Tonic Clonic, Absence and Focal. Here in Hampshire, we follow the First Seizure Pathway for treatment. This isn’t too dissimilar to other areas of the UK but part of the pathway is using an MRI. I was really excited to hear that a local organisation was tasked with finding an appropriate ear defender that does not contain metal. This will offer some relief from the noises of an MRI. This will be a fantastic resource for People with Sensory Difficulties and more inventions like these can go a long way for individuals with Learning Disabilities!
