“You ready?”

Hobi looked up at the jingling of your keys. He was sitting on the stoop just outside your front door, nervously wrapping and unwrapping a piece of string around one of his fingers. He looked constipated. Or vaguely like he was going to vomit. You weren’t sure which was worse.

“Where’s Namjoon?” he questioned, looking behind you at the door.

“He’s coming. I think he’s nervous.”

Hobi nodded, his eyes falling back to the string. He had it wrapped around his middle finger. “Is hyung coming, too?”

“Nah.” You offered him a small smile as you sat down beside him on the step. “He’s got some stuff he wants to get done.”

Suddenly, Hobi looked panicked, eyes wide. “What do you mean? Hyung has to come with us. What if something happens?”

“He’ll be okay. Yoongi’s good with being home alone. He probably just wants to read or nap or something.”

You resisted the urge to pat his shoulder. You had only known the snake hybrid for a few weeks now, but you had learned early on that he wasn’t the biggest fan of being touched--even in the most casual of ways--by anyone but Namjoon. He could tolerate Yoongi touching him when he was cold, like he had that first time you’d met him. But he didn’t respond well to your touch. Not unless he initiated it first.

Hobi looked at you skeptically, his golden eyes clouded over with worry.

You offered him a small smile. “I wouldn’t leave him alone if I didn’t think he could handle it,” you said softly. “I know it’s hard, but please trust that I wouldn’t willingly put him--or any of you--in danger.”

He sighed, pulling his knees closer to his chest and hugging them. He was quiet for a moment, and you got the sense that he was thinking. “I have to remind myself sometimes that things are different now.”

“You’ll get there.”

Hobi opened his mouth to say something, but before he could get anything out, Namjoon appeared behind you.

“Sorry. I’m ready,” he said sheepishly, pushing up the sleeves of his blue cardigan to his elbows.

You offered Hobi a flat smile and stood, motioning for the two hybrids to follow you to your car. Hobi tutted and reached across Namjoon, grabbing his arms and pushing his sleeves down to their proper positions.

“You’re going to stretch the fabric,” he scolded, taking hold of Namjoon’s hand and pulling himself tightly into the wolf hybrid’s side.

They both sat in the back seat. You could hear them whispering softly to each other every once in a while over the wind and the road noise--of course, Namjoon had rolled his window down again--and when you peeked back at them in the rearview mirror, they were holding hands.

It was cute, you mused silently. They were cute.

Other than the sounds from Namjoon’s window, the drive passed in silence. Normally, you wouldn’t mind. Yoongi wasn’t much of a talker in the car, either. But even without heightened hybrid senses, you could tell that both Namjoon and Hobi were nervous, and it was making you nervous.

Thankfully, there was parking available in front of the courthouse, and you didn’t have to seek out a parking garage. You weren’t too fond of them after your last run-in with Seungri. As you paid the meter, Namjoon and Hobi stood off to the side.

“It’s gonna be okay,” you told them gently, smiling at Hobi as he shifted his weight nervously.

The security guards at the door eyed Namjoon warily as you entered the courthouse. You hated this place, even before Yoongi. Everything looked far too cold--far too sterile--for your liking. Any step on the marble floors, even from Namjoon’s rubber-soled loafers, echoed off the dark walls. It all seemed intimidating and claustrophobic, and you hoped this wouldn’t take too long.

A clerk led you to the elevator and down a hallway to where you needed to go. The door to the office looked the same as all the other doors in the hallway--thick, wooden, and only barely detailed--and the only identifiable difference was the small nameplate fixed right under the office number. Office 127: Department of Hybrid Affairs.

Sitting right outside of the office in a small courtroom chair was a familiar face. Ms. Hwang smiled broadly when she saw you. Her blonde hair was cut short, just as you remembered, in an asymmetrical pixie cut. She always looked permanently windblown, as if she had walked through a small tornado to make it to court that day. Her leather briefcase sat at her feet, and she picked it up when she stood, extending her hand out to you, then Namjoon and Hobi.

“You’re collecting quite the pack,” Hwang said as she introduced herself to the hybrid.

You laughed. “Apparently, my goal in life is to convince all of Seungri’s hybrids that he’s the worst.”

“From what it sounds like, he doesn’t need much help with that.”

Namjoon offered a tight-lipped smile. Hobi politely shook Hwang’s hand before immediately going back to clinging to Namjoon.

“Let’s go in, shall we?”

She gestured to the door, and you led the way into the office. It was small inside, with a high counter almost immediately inside the door. As soon as the secretary saw Ms. Hwang, she stood and unlocked the small gate in the counter.

“Eloise is on a call,” the secretary said, motioning for you all to follow her into a side room. “She should be done in a minute. You all can sit here and wait for her.”

And with that, the secretary was gone, shutting the door behind her to separate the small conference room from the rest of the office. Namjoon and Hobi settled into two chairs at the corner of the table. Hwang sat at the head of the table adjacent to Namjoon.

“Are you nervous?” Hwang asked softly, offering Namjoon and Hobi a small smile.

Hobi nodded, his golden eyes fixated on the table in front of him. He squeezed Namjoon’s hand, and you didn’t see him release it.

“We’re just… unsure of what’s going to happen,” Namjoon said, carefully extracting his hand from Hobi’s vice grip and instead casually wrapping his arm around the viper hybrid’s shoulders, resting it against the backrest of the chair.

Hwang hummed and folded her hands on the table. “You’re going to fill out some paperwork today, and you’ll need to talk to Eloise. She’s the director of hybrid affairs for the county. She’ll have some questions, and then, hopefully, we’ll be free to go.”

“Yoongi said there was a trial,” Hobi whispered, still not looking up. He was practically shaking from the nerves. You sat beside him, and he calmed down, but only slightly.

“There was a trial for Yoongi, yes. But I don’t know that we’ll have to go that far for you two.”

“Why?” Namjoon’s wide, brown eyes stared at Hwang. She didn’t even flinch. You didn’t envy her right now, and you sure as hell wouldn’t have remained so steady under Namjoon’s gaze. He looked like a gentle giant when he was in human form, but his eyes still held the full intensity of his inner wolf.

“There are several reasons,” Hwang said carefully. “The most important of which is that the two of you are a bonded pack.”

“That means…”

“Bonded packs are hybrids with extremely close personal connections. Usually, those connections are romantic, but in certain circumstances, a bonded pack can be very close friends. It’s a federal crime to separate a bonded pack, particularly rare breeds like yourselves. And based on the history of your owner, I think we can avoid a trial.”

“So if there’s no trial, why are you here?” Namjoon’s dark eyes flashed from Hwang, to Hobi, to you, and back. He shifted in his seat, his tail slipping out between the bars in the seatback.

“Precisely this.” Hwang gestured vaguely. “I’m here to answer questions you might have. To make sure things go smoothly. And generally just to protect your rights.” She shrugged. “Hybrid Affairs is usually very good about actually helping their charges, but they’re still bureaucrats. Things--people--slip through the cracks all the time. I’m here to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Namjoon nodded, his eyes closing in thought for a moment. His hand moved to Hobi’s knee, where he rubbed circles with his thumb. “So… we sign these papers.” He spoke slowly, thinking over every word before he said it. “And we’re done with him?”

“That’s right.”

“Then what? Are we your hybrids then?” His focus shifted to you, brown eyes staring, but gentle. Hobi looked up at you then, too, and you wished you could read his emotions through his eyes.

“Severing one ownership contract does not automatically enact another.” Hwang rolled up her sleeve to check her watch. “If you wish to have another owner, you may. But if not, you’ll be independent hybrids.”

“What?” Hobi’s eyes widened to larger than you thought possible, his normally vertical pupils blown wide in shock.

You shrugged. “I told you I don’t like the ownership thing.”

“But Yoongi-”

“I don’t own Yoongi. He’s just-”

The door opened then, a short, middle-aged woman entered the conference room. Her dark hair was piled in a curly bun on the top of her head. In her hand, she held several manilla folders, all with color-coded tabs and sticky notes on the front. She smiled politely as she made her way to the other side of the table, shaking hands with Hwang quickly before sitting down across from Namjoon.

“Sorry about that. Our weekly meeting ran over, and I couldn’t just leave. I’m Eloise Maknamara.” She grinned at Namjoon and Hobi. “You must be the hybrids Sara told me about.”

With Eloise in the room, things could proceed, but you could tell Namjoon and Hobi were still nervous. Hobi’s leg bounced almost constantly unless Namjoon had a hand on it, and even then, he would shift and fidget. Namjoon listened to what Eloise was saying carefully, his fluffy ears on full alert.

She handed each of them a small packet of papers. “I need you to fill out these petitions. The front page is just contact information for you--just put down the information for the place you’re staying. It’s so we know you aren’t going to be homeless after being emancipated.” She pointed out fields for each of their names, addresses, daytime phone number, and other important information.

“Second page is contact information for your former owner.” Eloise flipped the first page over and pointed at the appropriate fields. “Just fill out as much as you know. We realize that might not be much.” Again, she flipped the page. This time, the new page was almost blank. “Here you’ll describe why you want to be emancipated. Try not to talk to each other during this section. It’s how we ensure it’s something you both want.” Finally, she flipped to the last page. “This is just verification that you are, in fact, a bonded pack. It’s just some surface-level questions about your relationship.”

You frowned. That seemed invasive, and not at all the court’s business. But before you could ask exactly what information they were collecting and why, Namjoon nodded and grabbed one of the pens Eloise had set out for them to use.

It was nearly silent as the two hybrids worked to fill out their respective forms. Every once in a while, Hobi would whisper to you to ask how to spell a word or two, but other than that, there was nothing. The quiet was nerve wracking, and you caught yourself drumming your fingers on your leg more than once.

Hobi was the first one to finish, handing his packet over to Eloise before noticing that Namjoon was still writing and pulling it back. Without even looking up, Namjoon’s hand found Hobi’s arm, and he squeezed gently. The viper hybrid sighed and silently slid the papers across the table.

The drive home was just as quiet as the drive to the courthouse, but the air was lighter. You couldn’t sense as much anxiety from the two hybrids in your backseat, which you supposed was a good thing.

Once again, Namjoon had the window down, and he leaned his head against the doorframe. The breeze tousled his silver hair as you drove, and for once, he didn’t look like he was hard in thought.

Beside him, Hobi had one of Namjoon’s hands in his lap, playing with the wolf hybrid’s long fingers absently. When you peered at them in the rearview mirror, his eyes met yours.

“You look like you have thoughts,” you said quietly, your gaze going back to the road so you could make a left turn.

Hobi sighed, tracing Namjoon’s fingers with the tips of his own. “What happens next?”

“Well, the paperwork goes through the department, and presumably once it’s done, you’ll get a notice in the mail.”

“Right, but…” Hobi paused, considering his words. “What do we do? And what do we do after?”

“What do you want to do?”

“What?” His eyes were wide, almost as if he was in shock that you had asked.

“What do you want to do?” you repeated. “I’ve been meaning to get Yoongi a cell phone. I can get you both one, too. No hard feelings if you don’t want it. Just something you can use if you go out. And I can get you tags, if that would make you feel safe. Although I might need to order them special so they’ll fit when you shift. I think the pet store only carries shifting collars for specifically domesticated animals.”

“We can do anything?” Namjoon’s ears laid back flat against his head. His tone was skeptical, which, you couldn’t blame him. You understood how it could seem too good to be true.

“Within reason,” you clarified. “You still have to, y’know, follow the law and stuff, and I would appreciate it if you didn’t disappear for days on end, but you’re welcome to come and go as you please. I’m not going to stop you.”

“I… I don’t know.” Hobi seemed nervous, so you turned and offered him a gentle smile while stopped at a stop sign.

“That’s okay. Take some time to think about it.”

Your neighbor’s guests had gone, thankfully, which meant the spot in front of your apartment was open once again. You parked quickly, and you didn’t even have the engine shut off before the door to your home was thrown open and Yoongi was rushing out. He looked panicked.

“Hyung?” Namjoon’s ears shot into high alert, his eyes scanning your home and the street for threats. “What’s wrong?”

“You have to help.” The cat hybrid approached you quickly, his hands finding yours, tugging you back toward the apartment.

His copper eyes were wide, his tail twitching behind him frantically as he spoke, but he was talking too quickly for you to actually understand what was happening. You picked up another plea for help, and something about a puppy, but otherwise, nothing.

“Slow down, kitty,” you told him softly, rubbing his arms. “What’s the matter?”

“Can you help him?” A voice from your doorway made you jump.

A new hybrid stood there, one you had never seen before. He was younger than Namjoon and Hobi, but not by much. Small, rounded, black ears poked out from his hair, and a long black tail swished nervously behind his back.

“Tae?” Hobi practically yelled,

The new hybrid let himself get enveloped in a hug, his amber, cat-like eyes never leaving you and Yoongi.

“What’s going on?” you asked Yoongi again, your hands moving to cup his cheeks.

“Taehyung showed up after you left. Jungkook’s in trouble.” He sounded breathless, and you could see the panic bubbling just under the surface in his copper eyes. “Tae took me to see him and I... I didn’t know what to do, so I told him to wait until you got back. I don’t-Can you? Help him, I mean? He’s just a pup.”

“I’ll do my best, okay?” You attempted to soothe him, your thumbs running gently across the apples of his cheeks.

Copper eyes searched yours, darting around your face. After a moment, Yoongi relaxed a bit, finally allowing himself to melt into your touch. He nodded, and you both turned to Taehyung, who was sandwiched between Namjoon and Hobi.

“You two stay here,” you told the snake and wolf. When they opened their mouths to protest, you shook your head. “My car isn’t big enough for all of you, and we don’t want to overwhelm the poor guy. Stay here.”

For a moment, you thought Namjoon was going to argue with you. His brown eyes got that intense look, the one that said he was normally the one in charge. But then he backed down and pulled Hobi away from Taehyung’s side.

Cautiously, Taehyung approached you and Yoongi. He was obviously a little nervous, based on how he was standing, but you could tell he was doing his best to be brave for his friend.

“Should we drive? How far are we going?” you asked him, watching as his ears twitched and refocused on your voice.

“He’s not far.” Taehyung’s voice was deeper than you were expecting. His face was angular and beautiful, but it was also gaunt, which emphasized the angles of his cheeks, nose, and jaw. Had he been living on the street for three years? “But I don’t know. I can’t carry him. Not far, anyway.”

Taehyung was right. He had left Jungkook in an alley near the train station only seven blocks away. They had created a small shelter out of cardboard boxes and wooden crates. Jungkook laid under the structure, and as soon as you saw him, you were glad you had driven to get him.

“Hyung?” he asked weakly, his voice a soft, but raspy tenor. “You’re back!”

As you pulled into the parking lot of the pet store, you couldn’t help but think of how scared Yoongi had been the first time you had brought him here. It had been his first trip out of the house ever--except, of course, for the fact that he had been living on the streets--and he had white-knuckled the seatbelt the whole time. Driving with Namjoon and Hoseok was much different.

Namjoon sat silently behind you, his dark brown eyes fixed out the window, taking in all the sights of the city. You had let him roll his window down and he had almost immediately stuck his face in the breeze, his ears and shaggy silver hair blowing back as you drove. When you stopped at a light, he would watch the people walking on the sidewalk curiously. You could see the amusement in his eyes through the reflection in your rearview. He didn’t say anything the entire drive.

Hoseok, on the other hand, hadn’t shut up since you had gotten in the car. He was full of observations and nervous chatter, and was all too happy to share them with the group. He pointed out a cloud that looked like a bunny, asked what a few of the taller buildings were for, read every street sign and billboard, and somehow managed to be in awe of every fountain and art installation you passed.

But now, in the parking lot, Namjoon and Hoseok were both staring up at the pet store. Hoseok’s golden eyes were wide with wonder. “I didn’t think it’d be so big,” he whispered, leaning forward to look at the store through the windshield.

You smiled. The store was pretty large, with its second floor devoted to hybrid items. You were hoping they had some clothes that would fit both of the hybrids in your backseat. Namjoon was tall and muscular, with broad shoulders and a big, fluffy tail. You hoped there were pants with a tail hole large enough for him. And then there was Hoseok. Tall and lithe, he didn’t have a tail or ears like Yoongi or Namjoon did, but his skin was extra sensitive, and he needed thicker clothes to keep him warm. You had never ventured into the ‘exotics’ section of the pet store, but the broad category name concerned you slightly.

Yoongi reached for your hand as soon as he was around the car. Hoseok’s grip on Namjoon’s arm was tight as they followed closely behind you. He jumped at the clatter of the cart as you pulled it out of the stack, clinging onto the wolf hybrid even more. You heard Namjoon chuckle lightly and a soft ‘it’s okay, Hobi’ before they were at your side.

You let Yoongi lead the way through the store, his hand on the side of the cart as you pushed. He stood in front of the escalator, waiting for you to secure the cart before stepping on, his hand immediately slipping into yours. His grip was tight. He was still a little wary of the moving stairs. Casually, he chatted with Hoseok and Namjoon about the types of clothes they wanted, and what kinds of colors and patterns they liked.

“We kind of just wore what he gave us,” Hoseok explained, picking up a lime green and red long-sleeved shirt. “I’ve never been able to pick out things I like.”

“It’s okay to take your time,” you told him, watching Namjoon hold up a pair of jeans a few racks over. Yoongi had spotted the sign for pants that accommodate larger tails, and they had gone off together, leaving you to help Hoseok. “But try to get a few outfits, even if it’s just two of the same shirt. We’ll get you more eventually, but right now, I just want to get you guys the basics.”

He nodded, handing you the sweater and a striped button-up made of thick cotton. “Thank you for doing this. I know you probably didn’t want to take in two more hybrids.”

You waved him off. “Don’t worry about it. I’m happy to help.”

“You and Yoongi-hyung seem really close.”

“You could say that.”

“Namjoon was worried about him. Yoongi-hyung and Jin-hyung did a lot to shield us all from stuff. I don’t even think Namjoon knows exactly what they went through.” Hoseok sighed, absently leafing through a rack of lightly insulated jeans. “But he looks happy. I know it probably wasn’t easy, but I… I don’t know. I’m glad he found you.”

You stood there silently, unsure of what to say. Yoongi had never mentioned protecting the other hybrids. “Thanks, Hoseok,” you said softly, holding up a pair of pants for him to inspect.

“Hobi,” he corrected, taking the pants from you and holding them up to his body. When he looked back up at you, he was grinning, a heart-shaped smile on his lips.

You stood with Yoongi in the hybrid health and beauty aisle, watching as Namjoon and Hobi looked through the different brands and scents that were available. He stood close behind you, his chest against your shoulder.

“So, I’ve been thinking.” His voice was soft in your ear. “I have an idea to maybe get Seungri off our backs for a while.”

“Oh?”

“What if I dyed my hair?”

“Yoongi, you don’t have to do that.” You glanced over at him. His copper eyes were already on you, his ears focused on Namjoon and Hoseok further down the aisle.

“I think it might be fun. Something different.” He sighed. “Plus, if we go out with them, he’ll notice us right away. I don’t want to make it easier for him.”

He was right, and he knew it. Now that there were three of them, it was more likely that Seungri found them. And while you hadn’t gone into this wanting to be responsible for two more hybrids, you would do almost anything to prevent them from going back to their old lives. You would have to call the lawyer soon to get the emancipation process started.

“If you want to,” you relented, squeezing his hand. “But I don’t want you to think that you have to do anything like this. I can protect you from him.”

Yoongi nodded and leaned in to kiss your forehead gently. When he pulled away, there was a light dust of pink across his cheeks. You waited by the cart as he wandered down the aisle to the hybrid-safe hair and fur dyes.

You smiled watching him interact with Hobi and Namjoon. Hobi must have said something funny, because Yoongi laughed, a wide, gummy smile spreading across his face. It was easy to see why they were friends in moments like that. The three of them looked happy to be together, in spite of everything they had been through.

And if Hobi was right—if Yoongi had saved the younger hybrids from some of the harsher treatment—you loved him even more. Based on his newfound desire to dye his hair, you suspected that the viper hybrid was, in fact, telling the truth. The fact that he was willing to sacrifice so much for his friends, it made your heart both swell and ache.

The three of them stared at the shelves of dye before Namjoon pointed to something. Hobi laughed, and you watched as Yoongi scratched behind his ear nervously before reaching forward and picking up a box. A second later, the three of them were walking toward you, laughing. They each dropped something into the cart.

“Okay.” You clapped your hands together. “Now what? What else do you guys need?”

“Could we get some art supplies?” Hobi asked, golden eyes bright and large.

“Hoseok!” Namjoon scolded softly, pinching the viper hybrid’s side. Hobi jumped slightly, and smiled at you sheepishly.

You motioned for them to start walking to the front of the store, the cart full of clothes and toys and supplies. “We can stop at the craft store, yeah.” You grinned at Hobi. “What about you, Namjoon. Anything you need?”

He shrugged. “I’m pretty simple. I don’t need much.”

“I’ve heard that before.” You laughed, reaching out and rubbing Yoongi’s back. “But then I ended up buying bookshelves... and a cat tree... and a piano.”

Yoongi chuckled softly, a small blush creeping up his neck.

Beside you, Namjoon shook his head, his longer hair bouncing into his eyes. “I’m okay, honest. I really don’t have many hobbies.”

Namjoon was a dirty liar.

You left the craft store with almost more than the pet store. Thankfully, neither of them had needed anything by way of furniture at the pet store, so you could fit Hobi’s plastic drawer organizer and Namjoon’s new small desk in the back of your car. Hobi had asked for quite a few crafts—beads and embroidery thread, watercolor paints, sun catchers, sculpting clay, and other small craft kits that he was excited to break into. Namjoon, on the other hand, had found two beautiful, leather-bound notebooks and a two-pack of the smoothest writing ballpoint pens on the market. He clutched the bag to his chest as you drove home.

The nice thing about having Namjoon living with you was that he could carry his desk into the house by himself. Sure, he was nice and all. But his strength was what you appreciated the most in that moment. The box was big and awkward, and it would have taken you and Yoongi at least 10 minutes to attempt to struggle it up the front steps and back the hall to the second bedroom.

Namjoon just needed someone to hold the door for him.

Hobi followed behind the wolf hybrid, his arms laden with a few bags from the craft store and his plastic organizer, which left you and Yoongi to grab the remaining bags—mostly clothes—and lock up the car. Yoongi took most of the bags, waiting for you at the back of the car while you grabbed your bag from the front seat and made sure the car was locked. When you joined him, he offered you a small, flat smile, causing you to laugh as you took some of the bags out of his hand so you could lace your fingers together.

“Hey,” Yoongi said softly, the smallest of genuine smiles playing on his lips.

“Hey yourself.” You kissed him quickly, taking note of the gooey look in his eyes and the slight tinge of pink on the tips of his human ears when you started to walk down the street.

You didn’t think you’d ever tire of seeing him blush like that.

Your neighborhood was nice. It was safe, and the apartments were all charmingly old. There was a huge park a few blocks away, and while you technically lived in the city, it often didn’t feel like it. You loved it here. Except for the fact that there was no off-street parking.

Normally, it wasn’t so bad. The street was big enough that everyone could just park in front of their house. But your neighbors had had guests the past few days, which meant that the spot in front of your apartment was occupied by a mid-size SUV whose owner didn’t know how to parallel park to save their life.

Walking the two blocks from where you parked to your apartment wasn’t so bad. It was a nice, clear day, almost a little too warm for your liking, but there was a nice breeze going. Yoongi swung your hand between your bodies casually.

“Do you think we’re going to be able to fit all of my stuff in your office?” he questioned softly, pressing the button for the crosswalk.

You hummed. “We can move your piano into the office, or the living room, if you want. I do have some concerns about your books, though.” He whined out a protest and you chuckled. “I’m sure there are some we can donate. But we’ll try to keep what we can.”

“Good, because I’m sure Namjoon-” Yoongi paused, his eyes focused on something just down the street.

You looked, concerned that Seungri had decided to show his face, but you couldn’t see anything. “What’s up?”

After a second, he shook his head. “Nothing. Thought I saw someone.”

“At it already?” You sat down beside Hobi on the couch.

He had dragged his plastic organizer out into the living room and was using it as a table. One pack of beads was open, and he had three strands of different colored embroidery floss taped to the edge of the organizer.

“I wanted to make Namjoon a bracelet.” Hobi braided the embroidery floss a bit before slipping on a green glass bead. “He lost his old one when we ran away. Seungri broke it.”

You frowned, reaching over and picking up one of the beads to look at. It was smooth and frosted, but still a little see-through. The whole bag was full of different shades of greens and blues and whites in different sized beads. “What do you mean he broke it?”

“He grabbed Namjoon when we were leaving. He said some really terrible things.” Hobi’s focus was on braiding. “I really thought Namjoon was going to kill him when we left. He never liked that Namjoon and I were together. He was always yelling and screaming at us, calling us just the worst things. It was so scary. But anyway, Joon said something to him when we left, and Seungri grabbed his wrist. When Joon pulled away, Seungri held onto his bracelet and it broke.”

“That really sucks, Hobi. I’m sorry.”

Hoseok looked up at you, golden, vertically pupiled eyes half-hidden behind a soft smile. “I’m just happy I can make him a new one. I made the old one out of some twine and plastic that I had found. I gave it to him on our first anniversary.”

“That’s so sweet,” you cooed. “I’m glad you get to make him a new one. I like the beads.”

“I think they’re pretty,” he said, sliding another one onto the thread. “Yoongi said you wouldn’t care about Namjoon and I. About us being together, I mean. And I appreciate that a lot. It’s hard enough to have a wolf and a snake hybrid around, let alone people like us.”

“People like…” You paused, confused for a moment. Then it hit you what he meant. “You both deserve to be safe and happy. Who you love is irrelevant.”

He opened his mouth to respond, but a voice whining your name interrupted him. Hobi raised his eyebrows in surprise before smiling softly at you just as Yoongi came waddling into the living room. He was holding the box of hair and fur dye, an annoyed look on his face.

“Help,” he pouted, reaching out for your hand.

“What’s up, kitty?”

You heard Hobi coo beside you, but when you looked over, his focus was suspiciously back on the bracelet. You turned back to Yoongi, about to ask again what he needed help with, when you noticed it. His tail, barely peeking out from behind his back, was a light blond. You had wondered where he had been for the past hour. Apparently, here was your answer.

Your eyes must have gone wide, because he shifted his weight nervously. “Does it look bad?”

“No, I just wasn’t expecting it.”

He watched you for a moment, copper eyes darting around your face to make sure you were telling the truth. Satisfied, he handed you the box in his hands. “Can you help me with my hair and ears? It’s harder than I thought it would be.”

You reached out and he pulled you up, leading you into the bathroom. He sat on the edge of the bathtub as you read the back of the dye box.

“I think it’ll be easier if you sit on the toilet,” you told him, walking out of the bathroom and grabbing an extra towel from the hall closet. When you came back, Yoongi was sitting on the closed lid of the toilet, getting the bottle and the powder out of the box.

You wrapped the towel around his shoulders and clipped it at the front to protect his shirt from any drippage. Absently, you scratched lightly at the base of his cat ears as you read over the directions again to make sure you knew what you were doing. He leaned into your touch, tilting his head to direct your hand to where he wanted it. You smiled and pressed a quick kiss to his hair before turning to mix the bleach.

After your conversation about furthering your relationship, you had noticed an immediate change in him. Apparently, he had been holding back his feelings and actions just as much as you had been. Yoongi had become much more clingy, more open to kisses and cuddles and affection in general—which was saying something, since he was almost always attached to you in some way before. But he seemed to always be open to smooches, which was good, because now that kissing him had become a regular activity, you weren’t sure you could stop.

“You ready?” you asked, pulling the plastic glove that came in the box onto your hand. He nodded, and you turned the squeeze bottle over, allowing the chemicals to flow out evenly across his hair.

A few moments passed, and you noticed him scrunching up his nose in distaste. You stopped applying the bleach, moving so you could see his face better. “You okay?”

“Smells bad.”

You hummed. “Sorry. Let me know if it stings at all okay?” He nodded, and you continued.

You went slowly, careful not to apply too much at once. When the bottle was empty, you threw it in the garbage, turning to massage the bleach into his hair. The box had said to use your hand to rub dye into the short fur on the back of his cat ears, so you gently scooped some of the chemicals onto your fingertips and rubbed it into his delicate fur. When his hair was covered in the pale white goop, you stepped away, carefully peeling the glove off your hand and throwing it away.

Half an hour later, you were bent over the side of your bathtub, helping Yoongi to rinse out his hair.

“It’s cold!” he hissed, the fur of his tail standing on end.

“It has to be. Stop being a baby.” You cupped a hand around one of his cat ears so you could rinse the bleach off without getting any water in it.

It took a while to finish rinsing his hair out, but eventually, the water running off his head turned clear and you knew it was done. You grabbed the toner that had come with the bleach, squeezing out a small dollop and massaging it into Yoongi’s scalp. He hummed happily, and you could feel him relaxing under you, a small purr starting to rumble in his chest.

“Don’t fall asleep on me now,” you told him softly, leaning over so you could whisper in his ear. He chirruped softly in response, shivering slightly.

You rinsed the toner out of his hair before shampooing and conditioning it, putting both of the small tubes on the shelf for him to use when he got his shower later. You turned off the water, helping him to lean back and towel off his hair slightly before squeezing out a bit of the strengthening treatment that had come with the box. You massaged the gel into his damp hair, inspecting your handiwork as you did so.

Yoongi’s dark hair had suited him—his ever-so-slightly tanned skin contrasted beautifully with the deep onyx of his hair and fur. But this blond… this blond was a whole other beast. The lightness of his hair made him glow. You had thought that he needed a haircut, his hair having grown long and shaggy in the back. But suddenly, it was the perfect length. It wasn’t as soft as it normally was, and you had to admit that you missed that, but you could live with his hair feeling a little dry if it meant it looked like this.

“Why are you staring?” he asked softly, his head falling to the side slightly, ears pressing into his hair. “Did we do it wrong? Does it look bad?”

You were quiet for a moment longer, playing with the hair just above his human ear. “No, I… it looks good.”

“Then why…?”

“I’m trying really hard not to say something stupid right now, Yoongi.”

“What do you mean?”

You had never commented on his appearance before. Not openly, at least. Yoongi had always been attractive, with his expressive eyes, button nose, and plush lips. But you weren’t sure you had ever explicitly told him that you were attracted to him. But there was a first time for everything, right?

“You look really good with this color,” you said finally, tugging gently on his hair so it pulled through your fingertips. “Like… really good. Insanely good.”

“I…” He looked at you, confusion evident on his face for the briefest of moments. Then, his eyes widened, and you could see a fierce blush creeping up his neck and onto his cheeks. “Oh. T-thank you.”

You smiled, patting his cheek gently before letting your hand drop into his. You led him out into the living room, where Hobi had moved his crafting supplies off the couch. He and Namjoon were sitting on the floor, cuddled up together under a blanket. They were inspecting something on Namjoon’s wrist. Hobi waved at you when he noticed you and Yoongi entering the living room, a bright smile on his face.

You sat on the couch above them, Yoongi curled up in a ball at your side. You wrapped an arm around him, planting a gentle kiss to the crown of his head.

“Nice bracelet, Namjoon.” You nodded to his wrist.

“Thanks.” The wolf hybrid held it out so you could see it better. Three strands of embroidery floss—purple, deep blue, and white—braided with the green and blue glass beads spaced fairly evenly throughout. Hobi really had done a nice job with it. “Nice hair, hyung.”

Yoongi smiled, a small, gum-filled grin, and snuggled in closer as you turned on his favorite bar renovation show. Immediately, Namjoon and Hobi’s eyes went to the television, getting comfortable under their blanket. You had a feeling you would enjoy lazy evenings with your new little pack.

Hobi sighed for what felt like the millionth time that night, his body deflating more and more against Namjoon’s with each dramatic breath. At first, Namjoon had ignored his boyfriend, his attention focused solely on one of the books he had taken from Yoongi’s bookshelves. But the longer he ignored Hobi, the heavier his sighs became.

“Something bothering you?” Namjoon asked softly, his finger marking his place in his book.

He turned his head to find the snake viper buried in a blanket, his dark hair and golden eyes barely visible in the shadows of the fabric. Hobi shrugged, but Namjoon knew better. He knew when Hobi was thinking about something, knew when he was overthinking something. So he sat patiently, large brown eyes blinking slowly at his boyfriend, as he waited for him to speak.

“I’m nervous,” he finally admitted, long fingers emerging from his blanket cocoon to play with the silken edge. “I want to believe this is a good thing, but what if…”

Hobi trailed off, his sentence going unfinished. But he didn’t need to finish what he was saying. Namjoon knew.

What if Yoongi was wrong? What if she was like Seungri? They had already been through so much. Namjoon wasn’t sure he could survive another Seungri.

The wolf sighed, his eyes falling closed momentarily before he pulled Hobi close. Silently, he rubbed his cheek over the top of Hobi’s head comfortingly.

“It’s tough,” Namjoon agreed. “But we have to believe that Yoongi-hyung knows what he’s doing.”

Hobi nodded, but Namjoon could tell he didn’t believe him. They had suffered greatly at the hands of Seungri--all of them, though some more than others--and it was hard to believe that this human they had met randomly could be so kind. But Yoongi… Namjoon had a great deal of trust in his hyung. Yoongi had saved his ass more times than he could count. Yoongi had taken beatings and weeks of less food and the harsh words and punishment after punishment. All in an effort to protect Namjoon and the younger ones.

The least Namjoon could do was trust him now.

Namjoon’s eyes drifted around the room, his hand finding Hobi’s hair as he fell deep into thought. Yoongi had said that he didn’t use this room much any more, and it was true that it was rather plain. But he was evident in the room. The piano in the corner. The shelves and shelves of books. Skeins of yarn in the corner from the cat’s newfound hobby. A notebook here and there. Photos of Yoongi and… what were you to Yoongi? A friend? More? Namjoon didn’t know. But something was clear enough.

“I know you’re nervous,” Namjoon said softly, pressing a light kiss to the top of Hobi’s head before resting his cheek there. “I am, too. But let’s try.”

“Joon…”

“Look around.” Namjoon gestured at the room. “Yoongi-hyung is loved here. This is his home as much as it is hers.”

Hobi shifted his weight, and Namjoon could tell he was thinking, observing, going through all the possibilities in his mind. It was one of the things he loved about Hobi, strange as it sounded. The viper hybrid was always able to see a situation from multiple angles. It had kept them safe in the forest. It had helped keep them alive with Seungri. And, with any luck, it would help them find a new home now.

“Hyung does like her,” Hobi said finally, his voice soft, lost in thought.

Namjoon nodded, his cheek rubbing against Hobi’s hair. The little ridges in his scalp from Hobi’s horns massaged the wolf’s jaw gently. “He’s been with her for years. He would know if she couldn’t be trusted.”

“I just can’t believe there aren’t any strings.”

Namjoon knew the feeling. He was waiting for the other shoe to drop. Everything seemed too perfect. Yoongi seemed too happy. You seemed too nice. But…

“Maybe there aren’t any.” He squeezed Hobi tighter to him, the book falling from his lap, totally forgotten. Namjoon’s tail, fluffy and grey, wrapped around the viper’s waist. “Maybe we’re just too used to being on edge.”

“I would like to try it,” Hobi said resolutely, squeezing Namjoon’s knee. “I’d like to stay here for a while, I think.”

“Me too, love.” Namjoon kissed Hobi’s hair once more. “Me too.”

“What do you mean?” Namjoon’s fluffy grey ears were flat against his head, his deep brown eyes wide.

He laid on the bed in Yoongi’s room, his injured arm clutched tightly to his side. It wasn’t broken, thank god, and he was already starting to regain some movement in it, but he had bruised it pretty badly, so he was still in pain. Hoseok sat beside him, arm wrapped protectively around Namjoon’s good one. He was wearing a blanket like a cape—your apartment was always cold in May, but it was felt even more severely by the desert viper hybrid. They had been staying in your apartment for a few days while Namjoon recovered.

You stood leaning against the wall, Yoongi just slightly in front of you.

“If you want to,” Yoongi said quickly, his tail brushing against your leg as it swayed nervously.

“I don’t understand.” Hoseok’s voice was soft as he spoke. “Why would you do that for us?”

“No one deserves to be stuck under Seungri’s thumb.” You offered the two hybrids a small smile. “Plus, I promised that asshole that I would turn the rest of you against him if I found you.”

Namjoon laughed darkly. “I don’t think he needs help with that.”

You chuckled, but there was no happiness behind it. Seungri was a jackass. Part of you hoped that Namjoon and Hoseok had had a different experience with him, but then again, you didn’t want Yoongi to have experienced everything he had gone through alone.

“You would have the same freedom Yoongi does,” you told them. Immediately, Hobi perked up and Namjoon’s eyes narrowed. You could tell that they were waiting for some sort of catch. You didn’t blame them. Yoongi had been expecting a catch at first, too.

“You can stay here for as long as you’d like. You can leave whenever you want. I won’t stop you. I’m not here to collect hybrids. If I can help you, I’m more than happy to, but if it comes to where you’re unhappy or you think you’d be better suited somewhere else, I’ll do whatever I can to help you get to where you need to go.”

Namjoon hummed and glanced over at Hoseok. For a moment, they had a silent conversation. You could see Hoseok raise his eyebrows at one point before narrowing his eyes in question.

“Where would we stay?” Hoseok asked softly.

“I uh…” Yoongi scratched behind his human ear with his index finger. “This is my room, but I don’t sleep here. You can continue to use it if you want.”

Hoseok’s eyes widened at that. “Where will you sleep, hyung? The couch can’t be that comfortable.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Yoongi responded almost immediately, a light blush spreading across his cheeks.

“What’s in the fine print?” Namjoon asked, his deep voice curious, but defensive. “What’s the end goal?”

You shrugged, glancing to Yoongi. Copper eyes searched yours briefly. “Emancipation,” Yoongi said finally, his eyes never leaving yours. “Get out from under Seungri’s control.”

Namjoon nodded, deep brown eyes falling on you. “And you? What’s your goal?”

You thought about it for a moment. What did you want out of this? Really, you were the one that stood to lose the most. Two more mouths to feed. Two more people to provide for. Less space in your apartment. The risk of your rent going up again the more roommates you took in.

“I’m tired of seeing him hurting,” you said finally, your gaze darting from Namjoon to Yoongi and back. “I’ve seen the damage Seungri leaves in his wake. I don’t want him to keep doing this. He can’t keep doing this.”

Hoseok and Namjoon were silent for a moment, both staring at different places around the room. Namjoon’s gaze was on you—intense, wary, but slightly hopeful as he sized you up and gauged your intentions. Hoseok observed Yoongi, the focus of his vertically pupiled eyes being the elder hybrid’s posture. Yoongi stood just in front of you, uncomfortable in the situation but not in the home, not with you. Hoseok watched Yoongi’s ears turn when you shifted, keeping tabs on you even when you were out of his sight.

“Namjoon-ah,” Hoseok’s voice was soft, but it held a certain command to it. Namjoon might be the leader of their little pack, but that didn’t mean Hoseok had no sway.

He squeezed the wolf’s hand and leaned forward to whisper something in one of Namjoon’s ears. You couldn’t make out what the viper hybrid said, but based on the way Yoongi shifted his weight, you had a feeling he could hear it perfectly. Namjoon turned slightly to look Hoseok fully in the face, their eyes locking before the wolf leaned in and touched his forehead to Hoseok’s.

“We can leave when we want?” Namjoon questioned, turning to look at you again.

“Whenever you want.”

He nodded, chewing on his lip. You could see one long canine tooth barely peeking out. “Okay,” he said finally, and for a moment, you were concerned that Yoongi was going to fall over from relief.

“Okay,” you confirmed, returning the small smile starting to spread across Namjoon’s face.

“Okay,” Yoongi repeated, taking a slight step back, his hand finding yours and giving it a small squeeze. You returned the pressure, your thumb running gently across the back of his hand.

Hoseok clapped and laughed, a wide, heart-shaped, sunny smile lighting up his features. “Okay!”

You sat on the couch in your pajamas, a random TV movie playing in the background. Yoongi sat beside you, an arm wrapped around your shoulders, his hand in the bowl of popcorn that sat barely balanced between you. It was dark out, almost 11 o’clock at night. Despite both Namjoon and Hoseok being nocturnal hybrids, they were doing their best to go to bed early in an attempt to get accustomed to being awake during the day.

Yoongi shifted, his tail slowly meandering its way around your body, settling once it was wrapped around your waist. The end of it curled and uncurled lazily, tickling at your elbow. You playfully pressed your arm closer to your body, capturing it and preventing it from moving.

“That’s not nice,” Yoongi pouted, his lower lip jutting out ever so slightly.

You took a handful of popcorn, putting a couple kernels into your mouth. “You should teach that thing some manners.”

“Can’t. I’ve tried.” He shrugged nonchalantly. “Haven’t you heard? I’m the bad one of the bunch.”

“Yoongi,” you scolded gently, frowning ever so slightly. You hated when he parroted Seungri’s words back at you. They weren’t true, but you worried that he believed it still.

Suddenly, he was very invested in the movie, despite the fact that not even five minutes ago, he had wanted you to change the channel. You spoke his name again, softer this time. It took a second, but he eventually turned his head, wide, copper eyes meeting yours.

You reached out, your fingertips brushing his hair out of his eyes before your hand settled against his cheek. Your thumb brushed against the soft skin. You had always loved how soft and round his cheeks were, even though he was naturally on the underweight side.

“You aren’t bad,” you told him firmly, holding his gaze. You could tell he was trying to resist leaning into your hand. “You can’t be. You’re the best boy.”

His ears drooped. “You’ve said that before.”

“I meant it before. And I mean it now. You are not bad, Min Yoongi.”

His eyes darted around your face, searching for any hint that you were lying. Slowly, his ears returned to their natural position. He must have found what he was looking for, because after a moment, his eyes fluttered closed and he leaned into your touch.

The way Yoongi said your name—all soft and reverent and bashful—sounded almost like a prayer as it fell from his lips. His eyes were still closed, but you could feel his jaw shift as he swallowed. He seemed nervous all of a sudden.

“I love you.” If you hadn’t been sitting so close, with your hand cupping his cheek, you weren’t sure you would have heard him.

“I know, kitty. I love you, too.”

He opened his eyes then, a light pink starting to crawl up his neck and across his cheeks. “I’m sor-” He cleared his throat and tried again. “I’m sorry we haven’t done anything about that.”

“That’s okay.” You offered him a gentle smile. “I understand.”

“You shouldn’t have to understand, though. I should be able to have a stupid conversation about this without my fucking broken brain getting in the way.”

It seemed like he wanted to say more, but you could tell he had gotten himself worked up. You frowned slightly, reaching up and brushing his hair off his forehead again. You repeated the action, again and again, gently pushing his hair back and off his face. You could feel him taking a deep, calming breath in an attempt to ground himself.

After a moment of you playing with his hair, he was calm enough to continue. “I should be able to tell you how I feel without wanting to vomit,” he said softly.

“I don’t think that’s necessarily your brain,” you told him, running your hand through his hair one last time before letting your hand fall to your lap. “I think that’s the cat in you. Or, y’know, the love.”

Yoongi chuckled slightly at that, but you could tell he didn’t believe you. It had gotten better over the last few years, but you could tell that there were days where his confidence in himself was running low, where he could still hear Seungri’s voice in his head telling him lies and putting him down. The therapy had helped in that first year. You were proud of how much he had grown, and how much he had learned. But it seemed like every time the two of you had a run-in with Seungri, Yoongi fell back into old habits for a time.

“I’m okay with not talking about it.”

It was a lie, and you were pretty sure you both knew it. But you didn’t want Yoongi to feel guilty. You tried hard to be understanding with him. You tried to approach things with kindness in mind, even when something was bothering you. So you didn’t want to push, and you didn’t want to force him into anything.

But it would be nice to call him something other than just your ‘friend’ or your ‘roommate.’ And it would be nice to not feel guilty for kissing him in your kitchen two years ago.

“I’m just nervous,” Yoongi admitted softly, leaning over to sit the popcorn bowl on the other side of the couch.

Truthfully, you had forgotten about the movie.

“That’s okay, Yoongi. Honestly.” You reached over and squeezed his hand. “We don’t have to define it. We don’t have to call it anything or make anything official if you don’t want to.”

His eyes widened then, his tail starting to flick harshly against your arm. “I don’t… Is that what you think I want?”

“I don’t know what you want,” you said softly, prodding ever so gently. “You haven’t told me, and I didn’t press. I don’t want to be the one that hurts you, even unintentionally. So I try not to push too hard.”

For a moment, he was silent. But then, his ears flattened slightly before standing back up and his tail went from smacking into your arm to curling around it. “Maybe you should.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m an idiot--I have no idea what I’m doing,” he said softly, taking your hand. “I’ve never done anything like this before. But I know that you’re more than just my friend. I know that I want more, but I don’t know how to get there.” He sighed, playing with your fingers. His tail brushed nervously against your arm, his ears flat against his hair. He refused to look up at you. “And I don’t know if I’m ready for… everything. But maybe I could get there eventually? With some patience and some help, I mean. I’m yours if you want me.”

Your free hand found his hair again and he leaned into your touch, his fingers still playing with your own. “Of course I want you. You don’t even need to ask.”

“I didn’t want to assume.”

You weren’t sure when you both had started to lean in, but suddenly, you were very aware of his breath on your face, and of his lips only a few centimeters and from your own.

“Is this okay?” It came out softer than you had anticipated, but he hummed in response, copper eyes darting briefly down to your lips before he nodded, just once.

You tugged him closer, closing the distance between you in one gentle motion. His lips were chapped ever so slightly from picking at them when he was nervous, but they were plump, and they molded against yours perfectly. At first, Yoongi did nothing, both of his hands still clutching one of your own, and you were worried that maybe it was too much for him to handle.

But then, something changed in him, and he began to lean into it, tilting his head so that his nose wasn’t so painfully smashed against yours. One of his hands slowly slid up your arm, his fingertips ghosting against your skin, and came to rest at your elbow. His other hand found your waist, fingers splaying out against the curve of your hip.

You let him lead, allowing him to deepen the kiss first. His lips moved against yours slowly—almost lazily—but his grip on your arm and the way his hand pressed into the flesh of your hip hinted at how desperate he really was. A small purr started to stutter in his chest, and when he readjusted how he was sitting so that he could pull you closer, you could feel it rumbling in your chest, too.

A few seconds passed—or perhaps it was minutes, you couldn’t be sure—before he pulled away. His cheeks and the tips of his human ears were a bright shade of pink. He pressed his forehead against yours gently, his soft bangs tickling your brow. Copper eyes darted around your face, almost like he was trying to memorize every inch of you. His hand that gripped your elbow drifted up to rest against your neck, his thumb brushing against your jaw.

“Can I…” He paused as you pressed a quick peck to his lips, a small, blissful smile spreading across his face. “Can I scent you?”

“Of course.” You leaned in and kissed him quickly again before tilting your head ever so slightly so he wouldn’t have to twist weirdly.

Yoongi leaned in closer, his nose brushing against your neck. The feeling of his breath on your skin brought goosebumps. He noticed, and you could feel him smile softly against you as he rubbed his cheek just under your ear once. His tongue—slightly rough thanks to his cat genes—was warm and gentle against your pulse point. Briefly, you wondered if he could feel how your heart rate had sped up.

He lightly nipped at your skin with his teeth, and you could feel his long canines pressing into your flesh just slightly. It didn’t hurt, but the sensation sent a small shiver down your spine, and your grip on him tightened. He ran over where he had bitten with his tongue, the sandpaper texture both soothing and chill-inducing, and you felt yourself shiver again. His arms wrapped around you tightly, holding you close as he ran his tongue over the spot below your ear one final time before pressing a gentle kiss there.

He nuzzled in then, his nose pressed tightly against your skin. You felt him take a deep breath, his body melting into you. He hadn’t stopped purring. He was practically sitting on your lap, putty in your arms as he snuggled in.

“I love you,” he whispered, inhaling deeply before flattening himself against you.

You held him close, reaching up to scratch at the base of his ears. “I love you, too, kitty.”

You heard a growl, and a yelp, and when you opened your eyes, both wolves were gone. Twigs snapped in the forest, and you could hear snarling and the snapping of teeth.

Yoongi sat a few feet away from you, having rolled away to avoid the wolf’s attack. He held his left forearm close to his body as he stared at the woods where the wolves disappeared.

“What happened?” you asked Yoongi quietly, carefully scooting over him. “Are you alright?”

Yoongi shook his head no, and when you reached out to see what was the matter, you saw his right hand was covered in blood.

The wolves rolled out of the trees, the brown one landing on top. It bit at the larger, silver wolf’s neck, causing it to yelp in pain. You heard Yoongi gasp. Apparently, the silver wolf heard it, too, because its head whipped over to look at you. That weird look in its eyes was back--it almost looked like it knew Yoongi.

You noticed absently that the collar was gone from its neck.

The silver wolf pushed the smaller one off and away and immediately lunged, going after the brown wolf’s neck. The two went rolling back into the forest, crashing through the brush. Your attention turned to Yoongi, who was staring off into the trees after the wolves.

“We have to get you inside,” you said quietly, readjusting so that you could stand up. Something cold slid across your hand and you yelped, pulling your hand back.

Yoongi’s ears stopped tracking the movement in the woods and he turned to you. His eyes, pained but worried, darted across your face before drifting down your body. “What’s wrong?”

“Something touched my hand,” you explained, standing quickly and searching the grass.

You gingerly helped him stand, his copper eyes scanning the grass frantically. You tried to pull him back towards the cabin but he wouldn’t budge, staring at a small depression in the grass. His brow furrowed. It was just dark enough that you couldn’t make it out, but you were positive that Yoongi could see everything in the little clearing around the cabin. His pupils were wide as saucers, allowing him to see in even the lowest of light.

Suddenly, he reached down, grabbing at whatever was moving in the grass. He picked it up carefully in his bloody hand. “Stop! Stop fucking moving,” he hissed, holding the snake just behind its head. “If you bite me, I swear to god.”

The snake stopped squirming almost immediately and Yoongi shifted his grip on it so it wasn't hanging so limply in his hand. The snake wiggled a bit before wrapping itself around his wrist. The thing was almost two feet long, and it took up most of Yoongi’s forearm, but it looked surprisingly comfortable there despite the bloody handprint around its body.

“Yoongi?” He hummed, bringing the snake closer to his face to examine it. “What’s a desert viper doing in the middle of the woods?”

The snake was a pale brown, almost sandy in color, with small patches of darker brown dotting its body. Two small horns stuck out of its large head just above its eyes. It looked almost like a dragon without the wings. It watched you curiously, its tongue fluttering in and out of its mouth every few seconds as it smelled the air.

“He’s cold,” Yoongi noted simply, rotating the snake to get a better look at it. To its credit, the snake was very well behaved, it didn’t move, it didn’t go to bite, it didn’t even hiss. Its small, vertical eyes were trained on Yoongi.

“We need to get you inside,” you repeated, tugging gently on Yoongi’s shirt. His arm was still oozing blood, and while you were curious about the snake, you were more concerned about Yoongi bleeding to death in the middle of the woods while two wolves fought in the trees surrounding your cabin.

The viper--now a dark-haired man apparently named Hoseok, but whom Yoongi called Hobi--sat on the couch in the cabin. He was a little taller than Yoongi, and you could tell just from looking at him that he would be a bit more muscular than Yoongi, too, if he weren’t so malnourished.

“You hungry?” you found yourself asking him, much calmer now that you and Yoongi were both safe inside the cabin. You had put away the pie irons as soon as you had gotten back inside, but there was still food in the cupboards that you could whip something up as soon as you were done bandaging Yoongi up.

The cat hybrid leaned back against the kitchen counter, his arm outstretched so you could look at it. The scratches on his arm weren’t too deep, but they were bleeding pretty heavily, and that worried you. You held a folded paper towel to it, trying to staunch the blood even a little bit.

Hoseok shook his head, smiling politely at you before turning his attention back to the windows. You could tell Yoongi was tense, his tail hadn’t stopped angrily flicking from one side to the other since he’d told you to grab Hoseok a change of clothes. You wished you knew what to say.

A particularly close howl startled Hoseok, and he jumped to his feet, his attention now fully out the window.

“I should be out there,” he said worriedly, sparing one last glance at the woods out the window before turning back to Yoongi. “Don’t get me wrong, hyung. I’m so glad we found you. But-”

“You can’t help him right now, Hobi.” Yoongi’s voice was soft and careful. He grunted as you removed the paper towel to inspect his arm.

“I have to find some antiseptic,” you told him, replacing the bloody towel with a fresh one and pressing Yoongi’s other hand onto it to secure it. “Wait here.”

Your heart was pounding as you searched the cabinet in the bathroom for a first aid kit, or peroxide, or something. You knew Yoongi probably wouldn’t need it. Hybrids couldn’t catch diseases like rabies. But it wouldn’t hurt him, and it would make you feel better to know he wasn’t going to get an infection. You had wasted enough time already, getting Hoseok a change of clothes, and the scratches were large, almost the entire length of his forearm. You shuddered to think what would have happened had Yoongi not gotten out of the way in time.

Thank god for cat-like reflexes, you thought dryly.

You grabbed the antiseptic spray, gauze, and the roll of elastic bandage from the cabinet and rushed back to the kitchen. When you returned, Yoongi was standing in the same spot, leaning against the counter, his back to you. Hoseok stood beside him, helping him hold the towel to his arm.

“I am glad we found you, hyung,” Hoseok said resolutely, lifting a corner of the towel to inspect Yoongi’s wound before placing it back down. “We weren’t quite sure what to do when we left. But we had to get out of there.” Yoongi hummed, prompting him to continue. “He’s gotten so much worse, hyung. He almost broke Jimin’s arm back at Chuseok. I thought Namjoon was going to rip his throat out.”

“How are the others?” Yoongi’s voice was soft.

“We haven’t seen them since we ran away. They left with us, but we got separated when Seungri came after us.” Hoseok sighed. “What about you? Where are Jungkookie and Taehyung?”

“I wish I knew.” Yoongi sounded sad. “I lost them in the woods a few days after we left.”

It was Hoseok’s turn to hum, but you didn’t sense any judgement in it. “Hyung?” Hoseok was so quiet you could barely hear him. “Who is she?”

“She’s…” He sighed. “She’s a lot of things.”

“What does that even mean?” Hoseok asked, a slight laugh in his voice.

Yoongi was quiet for a while. “I love her, Hobi,” he whispered finally. You tried to stifle the smile that wanted to spread across your face. You knew they couldn’t see you from where they stood, but if one of them were to turn around, you didn’t want to be grinning like an idiot.

Hoseok cooed, and practically yelled, “Hyung!” You heard a quiet ‘oops’ and he adjusted his volume. “That’s so sweet. So you guys are together?”

“Not really.” You could almost imagine how red Yoongi’s face was at this point.

“Hyung!” It didn’t seem that Hoseok cared how loud he was this time. “Why?” When no response came, Hoseok continued. “I get it. Namjoon and I were nervous too, at first. But, hyung, you can’t let him keep you from being happy.”

The silence in the kitchen was almost deafening. You sighed softly. You would never tell Yoongi--he was hurting, and confused, and struggling through things in his own time--but it did hurt that the two of you hadn’t actually discussed what had happened that afternoon two years ago. He had kissed you, told you he loved you, and he hadn’t brought it up since.

You wanted to be patient with him. You didn’t want to push. You wanted to let him take things at his own pace, for him to be comfortable with whatever and however your relationship ended up. But fuck. Two years was a long time for anything. It was excruciating to wait that long to talk about the status of your relationship. You cared about him so much it hurt sometimes, so you had worried that maybe his feelings had changed. Hearing him say it was nice, but it still stung that he was keeping it from you.

You took a deep breath and walked the rest of the way into the kitchen, greeting Hoseok with a small smile. The viper hybrid beamed at you and stepped away, allowing you access to Yoongi’s arm. Yoongi hissed when you sprayed the antiseptic on the scratches, and as you were placing the gauze, you were struck by the sight: four bleeding scratches running perpendicular to a sea of short, pink scars, some more faded than others.

Yoongi must have sensed the shift in your feelings, because his other hand played with the hem of your shirt nervously, comforting enough without actually touching you. You were just finishing securing the elastic bandage when Hoseok jumped to his feet from where he sat on the couch, his golden eyes trained on the woods.

“He’s back.”

Hoseok threw open the glass patio door, running out into the night. When the wolf collapsed on the patio, he was there, cradling the wolf’s big grey head in his lap. Hoseok carefully stroked the wolf’s fur in an attempt to keep him calm while you and Yoongi approached.

“Is this...?” you asked Hoseok tentatively.

He nodded. “Namjoon. Can you help him?”

You didn’t know what to say. The wolf--Namjoon--was in pretty bad shape. His fur, once a beautiful grey, was mottled with blood, though you couldn’t tell what was his and what belonged to the other wolf. He couldn’t seem to stand and had barely been able to put weight on his front paw when he was making his way out of the woods.

Hoseok had tears in his eyes, one hand tangled in the thick fur at the back of Namjoon’s neck, his other hand continued to smooth down the soft grey fur on his head. “You’re gonna be okay, Joonie.”

“How can I help?” Yoongi knelt beside you, his focus firmly on your face.

You couldn’t blame him for not wanting to look at his friend right now, but you also had no idea how you became the de facto triage nurse.

“Warm water and some rags.” Yoongi nodded and stood. “Paper towels and tape, too. And clothes.” Yoongi looked at you skeptically, and you clarified. “Ones that you don’t like.” And with that, Yoongi was gone.

When you looked down at Namjoon, his deep brown eyes were watching you intently. You could see he was in pain, but there was something more there, too. Curiosity, maybe, and a protectiveness that you assumed came from spending over 20 years with Hoseok and Yoongi and enduring living hell with them.

Carefully, you placed your hand on Namjoon’s head, your thumb rubbing over the soft fur just above his left eye. “Do you have enough energy to shift?” you asked softly, attempting to be as soothing as possible. “I’m going to try to clean you up a bit, but it’ll be easier to dress everything and make sure things aren’t too serious if you aren’t a giant, fluffy wolf.”

His tail wagged once, weakly, and he blinked slowly at you, letting out a soft huff.

“That’s a yes,” Hoseok clarified, a sad smile on his lips.

You inspected his front leg carefully, doing your best to look at it without doing more harm than help. When you barely touched it to get a look, he whined and snarled slightly, but he didn’t attempt to bite you. Hoseok leaned in to whisper in his big, fluffy ear, stroking at the fur on the top of his head tenderly.

You shut the patio door quietly, Yoongi’s basketball blanket and an umbrella in hand. You had given Namjoon and Hoseok the bed in the loft so that they could have a comfortable place to rest for the night. Thankfully, almost all of Namjoon’s wounds were shallow--a cut on his shoulder, a bite on the neck--and most of the blood that had been on his coat didn’t seem to be his. And despite how bad his limp had looked, you didn’t think Namjoon’s arm was broken, just badly stoved and a little bruised. But that left you and Yoongi with the couch for the rest of the night.

Based on how the cat hybrid was acting, you wouldn’t be sleeping, anyway.

The sky was already starting to lighten, the stars starting to dim as the moon dipped below the horizon. It was early in the morning, and yet Yoongi refused to lie down. He sat resolutely on the couch outside, staring out at the woods, as if he was expecting something to come crawling out. But the early twilight had brought with it a light yet steady rain, just enough to dampen your clothes and chill you to your bones.

You sat beside Yoongi on the couch, holding the umbrella so it protected both of you. Carefully, you wrapped the blanket around his shoulders, tucking it behind him so he wouldn’t get cold. He uttered out a small protest, and you shushed him.

“I don’t want you getting a cold.”

“Hybrids can’t get colds.”

“Shut up and let me do this.” He huffed but leaned forward anyway to let you better tuck the blanket around him.

Silence enveloped you, and you could feel the tension practically rolling off Yoongi. He sat stiffly, ears constantly re-focusing on noises you couldn’t hear. Thanks to the rain, his hair was starting to curl. You could tell he was tired--when he blinked, it took him a second to open his eyes again, but he would force them open and stare out into the slowly lightening forest every time.

You sighed, reaching up and smoothing out the hair above his human ears. “What’s wrong?” you asked softly, scooting closer so your leg was touching his.

“Nothing.” His answer was quick. Too quick.

You could have seen right through him even without it. He was sitting too rigidly, he was too alert, and his hands were clutching at his tail instead of holding one of your own. But you stayed quiet, choosing instead to play with one wet strand of his hair, twirling it around your finger and tucking it behind his ear. Eventually, you realized the rain had stopped for the moment, and you put your umbrella down.

When he realized you weren’t going to respond, Yoongi sighed. “How’s Namjoon?”

“He and Hoseok are asleep.” You stopped playing with his hair then, your arm falling to wrap lightly around his shoulders. “You don’t have to keep watch, you know.”

“I know.” He refused to look at you. “I want to.”

You nodded, letting the silence return for a moment before speaking again. “I can’t imagine what it’s like to see them again.”

“It’s hard,” Yoongi said after a moment, his grip on his tail tightening slightly. “It’s nice to see them, but…” He trailed off, his eyes watching the colors change on the surface of the lake as the sun rose.

“It’s okay to be conflicted about it, I think. It’s your past colliding with your present. It’s bound to be a little confusing and scary.”

“That’s not even it.” He sighed. “I couldn’t protect them. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t. Hobi’s such a genuinely good person. Namjoon is fucking brilliant. They didn’t deserve any of it. I couldn’t protect them then, and I couldn’t protect them now.” His tail was fluffed up, the tip flicking this way and that in agitation. He seemed like he was strangling it. “I couldn’t protect you.”

“Oh, kitty.” You tugged yourself closer so your bodies were flush up against each other. You squeezed his shoulder, reaching for one of his hands with your free one and removing it from his tail.

You had no idea what else to say, so you let the silence linger, ghosting your thumb over the back of his hand. To be honest, you didn’t quite understand his need to protect you. It had become more of a thing within the last year or so. If you were walking somewhere, he would insist on walking between you and the street. When in the store, he would stare at any hybrid that got within five feet of you. At first, you had found it strange--and if you were honest, you still found it a little weird--but you figured it was just his instincts, like scenting or needing to be warm.

“What are we going to do with them?” Yoongi asked, changing the subject.

“What do you want to do?”

He sighed, and for a moment, you were worried he wasn’t going to answer. On one hand, you wouldn’t blame him. You could tell seeing Namjoon and Hoseok again was dredging up old, unpleasant memories. But at the same time, he was clearly worried about Namjoon, and from the easy way he fell back into conversation with Hoseok, it was obvious they were close. But then, he squeezed your hand. “I don’t know,” he said finally, his voice unsteady.

“Take some time to think about it.” You resituated yourself, pulling your legs up onto the couch and leaning into Yoongi’s side. He let go of your hand to drape his arm over your shoulder, pulling his blanket along so it covered you, too. You snuggled in, wrapping your arms around his waist. “Once Namjoon heals, we can find somewhere safe for them. Somewhere he can’t find them.”

“Or…?”

You shrugged. “We’ll see what happens.”

The cabin you rented was small, but it was nice and surprisingly modern. It was barely more than one room, with the kitchen and living area just one open space. Against one of the walls, a set of stairs led up to the loft bedroom. The wall directly across from the loft was almost entirely glass and looked down the sloping lawn of the campsite on a fire pit and, further down, a small boat dock and the lake. Off to the left, the forest stood tall and resolute, with a few small hiking trails that snaked their way deeper into the trees.

You had been at the cabin for only a day, and already, you could feel yourself relaxing. You had known that Yoongi was anxious because of Seungri’s random appearances, but you hadn’t realized just how on edge you were, too. You felt lighter knowing that there was no way that asshole would be able to sneak up on you here.

And Yoongi. Poor Yoongi. You hadn’t seen him this relaxed in a long time. You almost felt bad that you had only been able to rent the cabin for three days. He was happy, his tail was relaxed and often swished happily behind him as he moved from inside the cabin to sitting on the patio. He had brought a couple books to read and his knitting, and he had taken the peace of the woods to really settle in with his hobbies.

He had asked you to sit with him on the patio, and you had been happy to oblige. So you sat on the outdoor couch under the patio umbrella, legs outstretched and resting on the ottoman. You had your laptop balanced on your thighs. Yoongi was curled up on the couch beside you, book in his hands, half in a sunbeam, half in the shade.

At first, he had protested when you brought your work materials with you to the cabin.

“We’re supposed to be getting away from it all,” he had told you, holding your iPad so you couldn’t pack it. “You need to relax, too.”

And while you appreciated his concern, the landlord had raised your rent when your lease renewed, and you had taken on a few extra clients to make up the difference. It had taken some convincing, but you eventually got your iPad from him after promising that you would only do as much work as was necessary to meet your deadlines.

“What do you want for dinner tonight?” Yoongi asked absently, putting his finger in his book to save his place.

You shrugged, double-clicking and pasting in your client’s desired text. You were making a poster, and while it wasn’t going to be the prettiest thing you’d ever made, it was exactly to the client’s specifications, and that was all that mattered. Even if orange and pink didn’t exactly match as much as they said it did. “I’ll take care of dinner. I have a couple ideas.”

He hummed, leaning in and nuzzling carefully into your hair. “You sure? We can grill again if you want.”

“That’s okay.” When he opened his mouth to protest, you continued, reaching over and squeezing his hand without looking away from your computer. “Let me take care of you, kitty.”

He snuggled closer, despite the humidity, and you knew he was flushed without even having to look at him. You needed the arm he was leaning against to finish pasting the text onto the poster, but a soft purr had started to rumble in his chest, and you couldn’t bring yourself to ask him to move. So you resigned yourself to abandoning your keyboard shortcuts and doing things the long way.

Eventually, the sun started to set, and you began to build a fire in the fire pit. Yoongi watched you curiously, helping you tent up the logs in the ring of rocks. His copper eyes glowed in the flickering light of the flames, growing brighter as the fire caught from the small bit of starter you had put under the wood. He followed you back into the cabin, standing back as you placed a loaf of bread, pizza sauce, and pepperoni on the counter.

“Can you take those to the patio?” you questioned, turning back to the pantry to grab the two pie irons you had seen in there. The cabin’s kitchen had come fully stocked with cookware, and you were excited to see that included the cast iron sandwich makers.

Yoongi was sneaking a slice of pepperoni when you joined him on the patio. He tried to chew slowly to hide it, but you laughed and rolled your eyes and he relaxed a little bit. You sat the irons open on the table and sprayed them with the non-stick spray you had grabbed.

“Do you want extra pepperoni in yours?” you teased, placing a slice of bread in the iron and spreading sauce over it. You topped it with cheese, pepperoni, and another slice of bread and closed the iron.

“Sure.” It was more of a question than a confirmation, and he stood confused behind you, watching you work.

As soon as you had the second iron closed, you grabbed them both by the wooden handles, carrying them down to the fire. Yoongi followed you closely, standing back as you placed the irons in the embers.

He curled into your side when you sat, making himself small so he could tuck under your arm as much as possible. You slid an arm around his shoulders and held him close, your eyes on the flickering of the flames.

After a moment of quiet, he whispered your name, and you could hear the anxiety behind it. You hummed and looked over at him, inviting him to continue but not saying anything.

“Why do you think he’s following us?” His voice was soft, timid, and you could tell it had been weighing on him for a while.

You sighed, unsure of how to answer. “I don’t know, kitty,” you said honestly, though you knew it wouldn’t do much to set his mind at ease. “He’s a sad, lonely man. I think it’s his goal, a little bit, to still be around and bothering you.”

“Yeah, but why? Why can’t he just leave us the fuck alone?”

“I wish I had an answer for you.” You squeezed him closer briefly. “I wish you didn’t have to see him again. I wish there was something else I could do.”

You stood and checked the irons to see if the sandwiches were done. They were starting to brown, so you took them out of the fire, taking them back to the patio and emptying them onto plates. When you returned to Yoongi, you handed him his plate and sat back down on the grass and he leaned back into your side.

“What’s this called?” he asked softly, picking up the sandwich and dropping it back onto his plate quickly. It was still very hot.

“Mountain pie.”

He hummed, holding his plate in his lap as he waited for it to cool. After a moment, his attention drifted back to the fire. He readjusted how he was sitting, picking at his sandwich when it was cool enough to eat. He was so close you could feel him chewing, and while normally you would have found it weird and a little gross, this time you dealt with it, instead pulling him closer.

Eventually, you moved back to the couch on the patio, lighting the little citronella torches to keep the few late-May bugs away. You sat with your legs outstretched on the ottoman while Yoongi laid with his head in your lap, staring up at the stars. You hadn’t added any wood to the fire, and it had burnt itself down to embers, barely giving off any light. As soon as he laid down, Yoongi grabbed one of your hands, holding it close to his chest.

“I wonder how the others are,” he mused, barely loud enough for you to hear. When you looked down at him, his focus was far away, like he was lost in his thoughts.

You didn’t answer him, unsure of what to say. You weren’t even really sure how close he was to Seungri’s other hybrids, and you didn’t want to say the wrong thing. So you settled on pushing his hair off his forehead gently and scratching at the base of his ears.

“You would like them,” he said finally, his eyes shifting to meet yours. “They’re good kids.”

“They were younger than you?” You picked a safe question, not wanting to probe too far.

“All but one, but he doesn’t act his age. Or, at least, he didn’t.” Yoongi swallowed thickly and sighed. “I hope that hasn’t changed.”

You wanted to ask him for details about the other hybrids. What breeds were they? What were they like? Did they all experience the same treatment? But instead, you settled on the obvious.

“You miss them.”

“We were like brothers,” he replied softly. “They were my only friends for 26 years.” He sighed. “I wonder if we’d still be friends? Like, if he never adopted us, or if he had treated us better. Is that weird?”

Somewhere off in the woods, you heard a wolf howl, and a second later, it was answered. Yoongi’s ear twitched in the direction of the trees, but he didn’t move.

“It’s not weird. You all went through a uniquely traumatic time together, sure. But that doesn’t mean you wouldn’t have been close without it.” You scratched at the soft fur at the base of his ears. “Trauma bonding isn’t the only way to make friends.”

He hummed like he didn’t really believe you. And you supposed he had no reason to, other than the fact that you had never lied to him before. He’d never made a friend that wasn’t tied to some traumatic event. Even you had met him when he was being attacked by a dog and a gun-wielding asshole.

When you woke up, you had no idea why. It was pitch black out--you could barely make out the boat dock down at the lake. The fire had died a long time ago, the embers weren’t even visible in the firepit. From the bed in the loft, you could see Yoongi standing beside the couch in the living area, his tail puffed out like a cat of nine tails. He stood tensely, staring out at the yard. As you got closer to him, you could hear him growling softly.

You hadn’t heard him growl in so long.

“Yoongi?” You approached him carefully, rubbing his shoulder as soon as you were close enough. “Everything okay?”

“Something’s off,” he responded immediately, his tail flicking back and forth in agitation.

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t know. Something smells wrong.” He shifted his weight anxiously, and you could see the gears turning in his head as he thought. Then, finally, he turned to you. “I’m going to go check it out.” He placed a quick kiss to your forehead--a pink blush almost immediately creeping up his neck to his cheeks--before unlocking the patio door.

You grabbed one of the pie irons from the table, hefting it over your shoulder like a baseball bat. “I’m coming with you.” He looked at you, opening his mouth to protest, but you cut him off. “I’m not letting you get eaten by a bear without a fight.”

He chuckled at that, but his ears suddenly twitched, catching some noise outside. As quietly as he could, he slid open the patio door. You followed Yoongi outside, his steps careful and silent as he crept forward into the night. The grass was cool beneath your feet.

You made it just beyond the firepit before Yoongi stopped, his attention directed to the treeline to your left. Somewhere inside, the brush rustled, and Yoongi let out a low growl, his ears flattening against his hair.

Something was approaching slowly, you could barely make out a figure through the darkness of the trees. Yoongi grabbed your hand and tugged you into his side, keeping you and your pie iron close. The figure in the woods finally stepped past the treeline, and you gasped. It was a brown wolf. And its golden eyes were fixed on Yoongi.

“Maybe we should go back in,” you suggested softly, tugging on Yoongi’s hand.

He hummed, but didn’t move. “It’s a wolf.”

“I can see that, Yoongi. It doesn’t look very happy.”

“No, it really doesn’t.”

The wolf took another step forward, and Yoongi stepped back, bumping into you. You continued this dance for a few steps, you and Yoongi retreating every time the wolf got closer. You were almost to the patio when you heard a snarling to your right. When you hazarded a glance over your shoulder toward the new noise, your stomach sank.

A second wolf was stalking toward you. This one was larger than the first, and its coat was silver, but despite its size and muscles, you could somehow tell it was weaker. There was something around its neck--a collar, maybe?--and you considered that maybe it had been raised by humans at some point.

“Yoongi,” you tugged on his hand again, your eyes never leaving the silver wolf. Something flashed in the second wolf’s eyes, and it cocked its head curiously. “We should just run for it.”

“They’ll chase us,” he responded, taking another step back.

He bumped into you and you stumbled, falling backward and practically pulling him down on top of you. You wanted to get to your feet, but the brown wolf was too close now. If you moved, it would surely pounce. But based on the hungry look in its eyes, it was going to attack no matter what you did. It took another step forward and Yoongi growled, loud and low. It would have been frightening for almost any other animal. But it seemed to just taunt the wolf more. You watched, unable to do anything, as the brown wolf hunkered down slightly, its hackles up.

The wolf jumped, and you braced for impact. Yoongi’s hand left your grip quickly, and you heard a yowl of pain.

The thing about having a black cat as a pet is that it suddenly becomes a major part of your personality. Everything and anything that comes in a black cat variety can and will become your Christmas present for the rest of your life. Dish towels, pot holders, sassy garden flags, ceramic knick-knacks, decorative throws--you’ll own them all.

This is all well and good. Black cats are cute, and statistically, they’re adopted much less frequently. And really, when your cat doesn’t understand that its likeness is mirrored on almost everything you own, it’s simply a personality quirk of the owner.

It becomes a problem, however, when your cat is actually half-human and is very much aware that all of your tea towels bear his likeness and that your parents have taken every excuse to buy you tiny ceramic black cat figurines to decorate your home office. It’s a problem, because not only does he find it hilarious, it makes him a little smug.

Now, you couldn’t go anywhere without him pointing out every black cat item to you.

“Oh look!” Yoongi’s voice drew your attention. When you looked, he was holding up a custom garden sign, the cheesy grin on his face almost exactly matching the cat’s on the sign. Behind him, his tail swished happily.

“Oh my god,” you said with a laugh, rolling your eyes. “I don’t think we need another stupid garden sign.”

“It’ll match the one your mom got you!” He put it back on the table anyway, his hand automatically reaching out for yours as you left the stall.

“We don’t even have a garden.”

“We have potted plants!”

“No, kitty, we used to have potted plants. And then they died because we forgot to take care of them.”

He laughed at that, leaning in and burying his nose into the hair above your ear. You leaned into his touch. He had become so much more open and confident in the time that you’d known him. You could remember the first time you had brought him to the hybrid farmer’s market nearly two years ago--he had been so terrified of everything, so afraid to even talk to the vendors, that he could barely enjoy the experience.

But news of Yoongi’s emancipation had spread throughout the tight-knit hybrid community in the city, and it had become quite the comfortable place once the group had implemented a ban on certain unsavory former owners. Not to mention the fact that Yoongi was starting to become more comfortable in his own skin, more comfortable being out in the world, so he was able to enjoy himself more.

The market wasn’t busy--it was still early in the season--but that didn’t stop the vendors from setting up their wares anyway. The market had become somewhat of a habit for the two of you.

Yoongi loved looking at every stall at the farmer’s market, and it had really helped him come out of his shell. While he was still wary of crowds, the two of you had gotten to know most of the regular vendors over the past few years. Having familiar faces on the other side of the booths had invigorated Yoongi in a way that you hadn’t expected.

He spent most of the morning chatting with the vendors like they were old friends. He stopped to ask Steph, who sold honey and beeswax, how her bees were doing. He had read an interesting fact about woodworking that he wanted to share with Luis. And he was very excited to see what new produce Sarah and Shane were selling for the spring.

“Pearl should be back soon, right?” He questioned as you passed an empty stall.

In the warmer months, it would be occupied by an older cat hybrid named Pearl. She was kind and had taught Yoongi to knit out of the kindness of her heart in return for a scarf when he got good enough to share his work. Yoongi had kept his promise and had knitted her a scarf last year. The two had been thick as thieves ever since. But it was still May, and it was a little too cold for her to be sitting at the market all day.

“Probably next month,” you told him, squeezing his hand.

He hummed and nodded, continuing through the market. It was almost lunchtime, and you were on the way out. It was so early in the market’s season that the food trucks weren’t even set up yet. But that didn’t mean that you were leaving empty handed. You had gotten two bars of Yoongi’s favorite honey almond soap, as well as bushels of cherries and strawberries that he had wanted for a recipe.

You enjoyed the walk from the back of the market to the parking lot. The end of May air was just starting to get warm, and there was a humidity that suggested that a storm was going to blow in soon. This time of year was among your favorites, partially because the weather was nice, but mostly because it reminded you of Yoongi.

It had been three years since you had saved him from your parents’ neighbor and his dog. And holy fuck what a three years it had been. Between the therapy and the court proceedings, you had barely had time to think that first year. Thankfully, you’d been able to relax a little more after that, and you could focus on what was important. Namely, the budding whatever-this-was between you and Yoongi. It had been two years since he’d first kissed you, and neither of you had ever gone so far as to put a label on what your relationship was.

Just before getting to your car, Yoongi froze, his ears rotating this way and that as he listened to something. You were about to ask him what he was hearing when you saw the man. He stood three rows of cars away, hard stare fixed on you and the hybrid beside you. His hair was almost entirely grey now, but the bile still rose into your throat at the sight of him.

Seungri.

“Let’s go to lunch, yeah?” you suggested, trying to tug Yoongi toward your car.

But it was too late. He’d seen Seungri.

“Isn’t he banned from the market?” he growled, tail puffing up defensively.

You wrapped an arm around him and steered him away. “I don’t think they can technically ban him from the parking lot.”

Yoongi was in a sour mood as you drove, your hand clutched in his, with his ears pressed firmly against his skull. He stared out the window, watching as you got closer and closer to downtown. The traffic got heavier and the pedestrians more abundant as you approached your destination.

As you pulled into the parking garage across the street from the cafe, Yoongi sighed heavily. He always got like this when the two of you ran into Seungri, and it had been happening more and more recently. Even though he had nothing to worry about, seeing his former owner shook Yoongi to the core, and you suspected it always would.

You held his hand tightly as you crossed the street and entered the cafe, barely acknowledging the bright greeting from the cafe’s hybrid owner, your friend and client Khai. You let Yoongi lead you to a table by the window, sliding into the chair across from him. A few silent moments passed, and Khai brought you both your regular drink orders--an iced macchiato with soy milk for you, and an iced Americano for Yoongi.

Yoongi leaned on his hand, playing absently with the paper straw in his drink. You hated when he got like this, hated seeing him hurting. You watched him out of the corner of your eye, your face turned to look out the window. It was starting to drizzle.

“I just wish he would go away,” Yoongi said softly.

Khai had delivered your sandwiches barely a moment ago. The Bengal cat hybrid hadn’t bothered to take your orders, just bringing you one of your three favorite sandwiches at random. Normally, you would have been annoyed, but somehow, Khai’s personality made his assumptions charming, and it was hard to argue when the food was as good as it was.

“I know, baby. But Ms. Hwang said there wasn’t much else we could do.” You reached across and squeezed his fingers.

He sighed, picking up a potato chip and popping it into his mouth. “It’s just… it makes it hard. Trying to move on from everything, when he can just pop up anywhere.”

You nodded, unsure of what to say. You could sympathize, sure. It must be hard for him, seeing his abusive former owner at random while you were out and about. It must be difficult to have to relive some of his worst memories at the most unexpected times. But you had no idea what he was actually going through. You still didn’t even know the full extent of it. There were still things he wouldn’t tell you about. A few experiences you could assume the details of, but he would never actually discuss them.

You never pushed it. He had opened up so much to you. If he wanted or needed to talk to you about it, you knew he would.

Admittedly, though, sometimes it did bother you that he kept certain things to himself. He never mentioned the other hybrids Seungri owned. Thanks to Seungri’s testimony at the trial, you knew that there were at least six more, but except for vaguely mentioning them at Christmas time, Yoongi refused to talk about them. You had brought it up once, shortly after the trial, but he had shut down, changing the subject as soon as he possibly could and falling into a funk for the rest of the day. You stopped asking about it after that.

Movement on the corner of the street corner drew your attention. Mentally you swore. You were starting to get annoyed with Seungri popping up literally everywhere. At this point, you were convinced he was tracking you somehow, but you couldn’t prove it. You watched as he idled in front of the parking garage. Hopefully he would be gone by the time you were ready to leave.

You should know not to hope for things to go well.

When you exited the cafe, Seungri was nowhere to be found, and for a moment, you thought you were safe. Yoongi swung your hand gently between you as you crossed the street, the rain gently pattering on the pavement around you. He was still a bit down from seeing Seungri at the farmer’s market, but he had started telling you about one of the books he was reading, and his mood was starting to lighten.

That was, of course, until you took two steps into the parking garage. A hybrid with large, pointy ears and a fluffy tail stood in your path. For a moment, he leaned nonchalantly against a concrete pillar in the structure, but the closer you got, you could tell his attention was on you. And then, when you were a few feet away, he pushed himself off the pillar, and just from the look on his face, you could tell he was a fox hybrid. He flashed you a cheshire grin and walked past you.

You knew something was up when Yoongi tensed, his grip on your hand tightened and he tugged you ever so slightly closer. That’s when you heard the light chuckle from behind you, and when you turned, your blood ran cold.

The fox hybrid stood beside Seungri, who looked positively delighted to be in a nearly empty parking lot with the two of you.

“I see you’ve grown a bit of a spine,” he said, a smirk on his lips. “Good for you.”

“Oh, Seungri, what a surprise,” you said dryly. “You know you technically shouldn’t be this close, right?” It wasn’t a question.

Part of Yoongi’s emancipation had included a somewhat modified restraining order. Legally, Seungri couldn’t be within 30 feet of Yoongi without professional mediation. And, though you both knew the city police wouldn’t enforce it, Seungri had obeyed.

Until now.

He waved you off, all pretense of kindness having gone with the trial. “I’ll be gone in a minute. Just wanted to see if you knew anything about my hybrids.”

“You got a new one,” Yoongi noted, nodding at the fox hybrid.

“Well, I had to. All of mine seem to have run away.”

Yoongi almost choked on his breath, his grip on your hand tightening so much it almost hurt. “What?”

“Oh you don’t know? I thought maybe you orchestrated it. You always were the bad one of the bunch.” Seungri shrugged. “But then again, you were never smart enough to be the leader, so I really should have known.”

You had to hold your tongue. Nothing he said mattered now. He could talk shit all he wanted, it didn’t mean anything. Yoongi was safe. Seungri had no power over anything. He was just a sad, middle-aged man grasping at straws to make himself feel good.

He continued, brushing his salt-and-pepper hair out of his eyes. “No, the other four ran away a few months ago. The wolf’s doing, I’m assuming.” He leveled you with an unamused stare. “You didn’t convince them to betray me, did you?”

“Unfortunately, no,” you told Seungri honestly. “But if I come across them, I’ll be sure to do that.”

You tugged on Yoongi’s hand, pulling him in the direction of your car. Thankfully, he followed. Seungri watched in silence as you walked away, stepping back off the road as you pulled out of the parking garage and onto the street.

It wasn’t until you were blocks away that Yoongi let go of your hand. He had barely let you go to get in the car, and then immediately once you both were buckled in, he had latched on again. You didn’t mind, but you could feel his hand trembling as he clutched yours, leg bouncing restlessly as you drove.

“What do you think about getting away for the weekend?” you asked, turning onto your street.

Yoongi looked at you briefly before turning his attention back out the windshield, his copper eyes clouded with worry. For a moment, you didn’t think he would answer you. His bottom lip was between his teeth, chewing in thought.

“What if he finds us?” he finally asked, voice soft, hesitant.

It wasn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility. It seemed as though Seungri had eyes everywhere. As if he knew where you were at all times.

“We’ll go off the grid as much as we can.” You parked your car outside of your house, killing the engine. You made no moves to get out, distractedly playing with your keys instead. “We’ll rent a cabin in the woods somewhere. Just relax for the weekend. What do you think?”

“He won’t find us?”

“If he does, maybe we can feed him to a bear,” you joked.

“I’d feel bad for the bear.”

You hummed. “True. Poor thing would probably get indigestion.”

Yoongi laughed at that, and you smiled. You liked when you could bring him out of his anxiety, if only just a little.

“A weekend away sounds nice.” He squeezed your hand, and that was that.
