Dress Up, a performance

I was kind of lost as to where to go for this project, but I wanted to something about gender performance. I realized a really fun and simple way to talk about that was makeup. I am non-binary and I find a lot of joy in picking out where on the spectrum of gender I fit for the day, and really expressing that. I love putting on makeup when I’m feeling extra feminine and its a super fun practice for me. Makeup has turned into a lot of different things for a lot of different people, but to me it’s an incredibly useful tool to help me feel like myself sometimes. This is just me having fun with it!

I cannot do makeup on myself to save my life. I could tell you were having absolute fun doing this project and I’m glad I’m not the only one who talks to myself when doing mundane tasks.

Project 4: One Minute Performance

Forced to Look

Everyone has heard the phrase, “Eyes are the window to the soul.” Therefore in this piece, I wanted the focus of the performance to be on the eyes as if we were staring at each other for one minute straight. Staring often makes one uncomfortable like you’re being judged in some way or another. However, looking into someone’s eyes can tell you a lot about them like the quote above mentions.

The performance itself was uncomfortable for me, but I wanted to try to do something I’ve never done before and that would be interesting. Either way, both artist and viewer participant in the performance and face discomfort through the continuous staring.

Eye contact is something that I’m okay with, but prolonged eye contact makes me so uncomfortable lol so great job!

Project 4: Performance Art

It’s the end of the semester, and I’m quite tired.

I love art, but I’m so tired.

When I’m tired I like to go home and snuggle in my Comfy!

When I’m sad… I snuggle in my Comfy.

When I’m sick… I snuggle in my Comfy.

Getting in the shower to be renewed - and just feeling weighed down by what makes you comfortable. However silly, it’s relatable … we all know what mentally this spot feels like , even if we don’t actually perform this act.

What separates everyday performance art? Performing acts of grief, depression, happiness, and love all look so different.

Thinking of a performance in 1 minute, I almost went mad - so many possibilities of things to do. However that is where my comfort lies a lot of the time - talking , saying a lot. What if I just make myself more miserable on the outside? Then theres some kind of sense that whats on the inside will just be better than sopping wet clothes in the cold.

I took my comfort, I disregarded it, and in the process… I didn’t die! Not much happened either - and when it was done and I snuggled in bed I was able to reflect on how much we can grow by safely throwing away what makes us most comfortable in our own everyday performances.

It always takes me forever to get in the shower, but once I’m in it I don’t want to leave it. This is a very conceptual design that not only everybody can relate to, but I love the simplicity of it.

Durational Performance: Repetition, 2022

For this project, I was interested in using repetition to explore a meditative state. I lost track of the minute--which quickly turned to three--as I watched paint pool in varying opacities. I wanted to allow mistakes and unevenness. At times, my hand lost the pattern of the grid. The unpredictable end result became a part of this meditative process, a reminder to call in a lot of ease--a tenderness I believe we could all use as the semester winds down. Lastly, here I am reminded that "repetition is a form of change." While I can resist routine, favoring a little controlled chaos, I must remember that no single effort is ever the same as the last, and that often it is by staying true that we may continue to evolve into greater and greater versions of ourselves.

I don’t know what it is about the simple piece of art, but it provides a weird scent to me like a Eucalyptus or lavender candle being burnt after it’s drizzling outside.

A Face in a Stitch: Performance Video

My camera decided to crash on me and so I had to use my phone which had a broken speaker so the sound was REALLY bad. Doing a performance video with this angle was somewhat in my comfort zone; I don’t like being in the front of the camera and I found an old embroidery project so I decided to “perform” that. The final piece has an antique jewelry chain dangling from her ear. Luckily, the jewelry piece is able to move freely off of the hoop to provide the piece a more 3D effect.

To Repurpose

I found the pictures in my grandma’s Better Home & Garden Sewing Guide from the 1960. These hand drawn images and artistic style were absolutely beautiful so I took a picture, traced them on my IPad while adding some details, and finally took landscape images to bring the art to a more modern time.

Response to Roselee Goldberg: Performance art is very interesting considering the fact that everybody can view it and understand it completely different. Having your own experiences, tastes and thought process which allows it to alter meaning or view while it is happening. For example, if a piece has a villain in it some people can sympathize with the villain while others will be uncomfortable and hate the villain. This reminds me of a movie I was watching, though not quite the same to performance art, where everybody thought the man the main character fell in love with was a strong and handsome person who was a “bad boy” type. However, due to my experience, I was super uncomfortable watching the movie because the man reminded me of an abusive friend.

Response to Coco Fusco: Unfortunately having a culture displayed (especially with a live persons in the 19th century) kind of destroys the art and true expression the culture originally contained. Taking culture into a new light is okay, but to display it in certain matters and like I said in my previous response it can alter everybody’s viewpoints on it. If information is spread incorrectly by little plaques it can cause people to believe “this is how these people behave and this is how they express their art” because those who experience with the “new” doesn’t allow them to have their own point of view or voice of the piece.

Project 3: One Minute Supercut- Nurtured Nature

In considering what I wanted to do for this project, I seemed to be super drawn to adding the imagery of flowers into this in some way. I didn’t know exactly how I wanted to depict them or what message I wanted to send so I did some research on some key words, flowers, life, nature. After doing this my ideas expanded, and I remembered a song that is dear to my heart for many reasons that I wanted to depict in this project as well. This song from Porter Robinson named Lifespan shares an instrumental of the waves of life in excitement and somber. This beautiful soundtrack makes a perfect background for the floral display of this project. Displaying the life and beauty of flowers and their birth was the goal. So, the final product of this piece shares a compilation of flowers growth and existence focusing on the beauty of each specific flower. The name of this project is derived partly from the song as it is in an album called Nurture by Porter Robinson, additionally the “nature” part being self-explanatory pointing toward flowers.

Project 3 - Supercut

Dumpster Fire

Artist Statement:

Originally, for this project I wanted to take cuts from my favorite Netflix show, Bojack Horseman of Bojack saying certain phrases. However, looking at a lot of my other work in this class and others, I noticed I tend to choose easy subjects that are not a challenge to work on, things that I know I can make look good or finish without any serious complications. I focus on silly, light-hearted subjects… things that the world could probably live without.

Something the world could live without but had to deal with anyways? The pandemic. 2020. Quarantining. I know that videos encompassing 2020-21 are out there, but we were given a supercut, 1 minute limit challenge. I decided to find clips from news videos of challenges and issue from 2020 as I could, and fit as many as I could into this project. Although I failed to keep my video to a minute (and ten seconds), I found it challenging to narrow it down to just that. I took out at least 5 other major events from 2020, and I was still sitting at a 1 minute and 45 second video. For context though, I started with around 6 minutes of recorded clips. All that being said, here we are, 2 years after that dumpster fire of a year started. Here’s a look back on what we went through.

Trigger warnings: suffocation, stalking, enclosed spaces, wildfires, snakes, and spiders

I decided to look up the top ten fears people have, as well as base some of these clips off of my own fears and my friends fears. At first I was originally planning to have creepy music with it or some white noise, but after watching the video with the original clips sounds I preferred it without the music. Having sound at the beginning and then kind of abruptly going silent made it more jarring, especially when it came to the clips where you’d expect sound. I also liked the title at the end, because again it was more surreal and jarring that way. I definitely don’t recommend watching if you have some of these fears, I’m not trying to cause anxiety or panic attacks or anything, just wanted to provide a goosebump kind of feeling. I’ve always been fascinated with what goes bump in the night and fear and I have a very peculiar relationship; I definitely think people don’t realize that adrenaline junkies like me can still have fears too.

Time and Relation to Art

Time is a concept that as a human species we both fear it and enjoy it. When we are young we have a tendency to think that we have all of the time in the world, yet once we get about the age of sixteen or eighteen we think that time is running out and we have to figure out our lives. However, when we finally get older we realize how much time has passed and we enjoy it while it lasts. It is a continuous cycle that everybody recognizes, but no one talks about time in nature. Nature can either preserve something for decades or destroy something that should have lasted for decades in a matter of minutes. Creation and destruction are apart of the art of pieces that can allow somebody to understand the time it took to make them. To truly enjoy the concept of time, we need pieces of art to allow us to not only enjoy the moment, but allow us to understand it. A complex piece is nice, but a pause in time to enjoy a simple creation or drawing, or even a piece of art along the asmr spectrum can allow us to physically and mentally slow down.

Art Project 2: The Loop The Rocky Horror Picture Show “Sweet Transvestite”

Growing up, I was always fascinated by The Rocky Horror Picture show. I would catch glimpses of the movie when it played on the TV, hoping that I could watch more of it before my parents found out. The music, dancing, and costumes made me feel like I was watching something that was taboo. I have one memory of finding my dad watching it on our family TV and being really surprised that such a strait-laced man such as my father would watch this movie. He probably felt the same taboo I felt at the time. Watching the movie again as an adult I understand why it is so popular. The characters are so hilariously portrayed, and the story is ridiculously fun. I selected clips from the song “Sweet Transvestite” from The Rocky Horror Picture show because of the confidence Dr. Frank-N-Furter exulted during his introduction. This movie still feels a little taboo but in a good way.
