          Mary waves her hand at Robin, because Mary’s never been one to fret over injuries. “I will next time,” she promises. In this case, an ambulance had to be called and there was a long, grueling surgery to get everything back in order for her, but that’s neither here nor there. “He has everything mapped out in his head. Sort of has trouble actually telling people his plans and he just sort of does it on his own.” Except she’s helping with this one. “I only came to more warn you about him coming, within the next day or so. He has a habit of blindsiding people, but I think that will be fine.”

“Ah, but he’s in my house. I hope you’ll instill the right kind of fear into him about making problems for me.” Robin is so respected because she sticks to her promises and doesn’t let anyone get away with bullshit under her roof. She gives them one chance to explain if they’ve done something she doesn’t like, and if they don’t give her a satisfactory answer (the truth), then off comes a finger or a toe (and once it was a testicle). “I’ll inform my staff,” she assures, and looks at Mary imploringly. “You’re taking are of yourself?”

          Already knowing what toppings she wants, she listens to Juliet with a bit of a smile. “Yeah, I think that’s the most pretentious topping combination I’ve heard in awhile, but it sounds nice.” Minus the chicken, but that’s obvious. “Mine’s the worst, though. Pineapple, black olives, green peppers, jalapeños, garlic, corn, broccoli.” She’s always enjoyed a variety of toppings. “Let’s get Grey anchovies and pineapple. And yeah, that definitely tracks with him. That’s his whole brand, lowkey.”

Juliet can’t help but giggle at Ophelia’s pizza order. It sounds so funny to hear it out loud, but the other woman had turned her on to broccoli as a pizza topping. “You deserve credit for making me like broccoli on pizza,” she says, finishing up her order, she adds onion rings and then opens the pizza making menu again and carefully holds her phone out for Ophelia. “Plug in yours, and Grey’s if you want, then I’ll finalize everything.” She leans back and takes a deep breath, stretching out her good leg a bit to the side so as not to bump Ophelia. “I am so glad I found medicated bath bombs.”

          “I didn’t manage to get her in the bath, but I did wipe her down the best I could.” Because sleeping with a greasy cat is not fun. “Cats are so weird with food and random things, I swear even more than dogs are. “I actually haven’t heard that before? That one’s a weird one. Might be a weird superstition or something? As long as the cat isn’t super heavy or scratching or biting you, there’s no issue.”

“There’s gotta be something like pet Fabreeze to give them a little freshen up when you don’t wanna bathe them too often,” she says with a laugh. “My cat eats so much plastic I’ve basically gone to reusable products for her sake. It’s like... pre-baby proofing.” Greta shrugs, she can’t be sure what issue there might be with cats on pregnant bellies, but... “Well I kinda like it with Cookie lies on me, I dunno if it’s placebo effect but I feel tons better after she’s laid on me and purred for a while.”

          “I’ll keep that in mind.” Being invited even without his kid? It’s a nice invitation, and one he seems all too pleased about, if his smile is anything to go by. “And who knows, maybe I can help get you out of the house more often.” Maximilian is a helpful, outgoing man, and it helps that Alec is a good-looking, nice man –– even if nothing at all comes from it. “Hey, man, don’t overthink it.” He knows it isn’t that easy, but many things can be boiled down to just overthinking something. “She didn’t want to stick around. That’s not on you.” He means that, completely. “It reflects badly more on her than it does you. You’re here, that’s what matters, yeah?”

“If I can get over letting someone in when the place is a mess,” Alec says with a laugh, it is an anxiety of his, but he has simplified the place with the help of his sisters. Almost stupid proof and a more streamlined and moderate (not minimal) approach. Alec clears his throat, shaking his head. “It kinda feels like it is sometimes,” he admits, but the rest of what Maxie says makes him smile and the tightness he’d felt every so briefly in his chest eases. “I think I needed to hear that,” he admits. “That me being here is important. Thank you.”

          Sherlock isn’t surprised she’s kept up on it all these years –– like she said, everybody has a case that follows them forever. This is it for her, and he can understand that easily. “Between everything, he will appear again.” There is always the slim chance that the killer has died, but Sherlock doesn’t voice this thought ( what would the reason be? ). “You’re worried. Not for yourself.” At least, not wholly. “But for Alana. You are worried he’ll come after her.” Completely plausible, unfortunately. “What can I do, Claire?” He may not be connected to this case or have any emotional, psychological ties, but he does want to help the other woman and bring these murders justice.

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Claire replies. “Putting so much attention on him, might be what he needs.” She shakes her head, containing her irritation with the situation. The media doesn’t need to put so much attention on this; a quiet docu series might’ve been fine, but it’s being sensationalized far too much for anyone’s good. “I can’t be sure how much his type has changed,” say Claire. “But she is a young successful woman, and that is what scares me. If he went after her sister, who’s to say he won’t go after her too?” She makes a turn and the first hints of the pier appear on the right. Bike paths and and pretty lights in the trees. The restaurant is a few blocks away. “I have an archive of information on my computer at home,” she says. “I can give you access.” She looks at him. “I need an outside perspective, really. And I can answer any preliminary questions over dinner, yeah?”

I’m remembering that the first fandom I slipped Juliet into was Now You See Me, and now seeing more Ocean’s content is bringing me back to Juliet’s “heist” verse details. So basically if you need someone for a heist: she’s useful bc she can store shit in her leg, digitally and physically.

She’s in her element at social events, networking, showing off the accessible fashions she wears. Despite the whirlwind of people, the smile on her face is authentic. “So does this pretty face have any more unexpected knowledge to share?” she asks, indulging his humour. She spins her cane absently. "You certainly know how to make a first impression.”

   “I’m not gonna lie to you, that went so much better than I expected.”    The kids were curious, yeah, and some of their questions just about bordered on insensitive – but that’s why Maia taps the principal to get speakers like Juliet in. If the kids can get it out of their system here, they won’t just vomit up gross questions to any minority they meet on the street. Hopefully.

   “Still,” she’s gotta make the obvious concession. “I know those kinda talks are tough with any audience. Telling your whole story et-ketera, woof. Are you good? You wanna go to the staff room, get a coffee or something?”

Five years out from the accident, stronger and fitter than she’s ever been, and yet these key-note speaking gigs never did get any easier. Juliet feels a little rawer after, but also glad that she can help kids understand something new about disabilities and respect. “I can’t blame ‘em, if they don’t know anyone missing a limb they’re gonna have questions.”

Juliet finds herself nodding. “Yeah staff room sounds good, do you have tea?” Juliet’s cane taps against the floor as they walk. “I’m just glad they were more curious about the medical stuff. I was glad we got to guide the discussion back to phantom pain after that girl, Lia I think, asked why I didn’t keep being a dancer... I think that would have been harder to explain.” She laughs but it’s a little sad. “Between us, Novament didn’t want me back despite my best efforts. I think getting into systemic ableism might have been too much for them today.”

          Sherlock has quite a few cases that have stuck with him, some of them were for good reasons, others not so much. He doesn’t forget any of the cases he’s helped with, be them personal or with the police, but some are thought about more often than others. “He may be rather annoyed by that. He wanted to start something that he couldn’t finish.” Sherlock wonders if, perhaps, the killer has some unfinished business with Claire. “You realize coming back to this will very likely result in his reappearance, yes?”

Claire tries to focus on driving, but her memory wanders back to that day, of trying to crawl back to Quentin who couldn’t put enough pressure on his own wound, and she who’d put them in that mess. “He hasn’t been active in ten years,” Claire says. “We have a profile on this guy in departments from here to Canada, if he’d killed again his MO would have brought up a red flag.” A beat. “And even if it hadn’t I’m in contact with several departments every six months to keep tabs... in case of system error.” She couldn’t let this one slip away. At another red light, Claire glances at Sherlock again. “I’ve been on this for ten years. He’s hasn’t been active. But the docu-series? The news coverage? I absolutely think that’s a bad idea. And I’m worried about the sister... Alana, she’s gotten her own little celebrity as a soon-to-be Olympic Volleyball player. The media has been trying to reach her for an interview.” She shakes her head.

          “Sounds great, mate.” And it does –– Maximillian loves a dream kitchen, and could spend hours cooking if he wanted to. It’s less about wanting to anymore, and more about just not having the time, or so he tells himself. ( In actuality, it’s the creeping loneliness he never had in his life, now that he and Yarrow live in separate homes and Aiden splits their time between them, and not wanting to go all out with food and meals when it’s only him alone. Not that he realizes this, yet. ) “I think we could plan something out. I’m not usually busy these days, so I can work around your schedule.” He knows the pains of dealing with young children –– everything has to revolve around them, and that’s fair. “I think there’s plenty of people out there that fit that, yeah? They’ll just fall into your lap. I was married for over a decade, and we still get on well, which I think is really great for us.” He gives a slight smile, the upturn warm. “I’m sorry it wasn’t the same for you.”

“I’m not actually that busy either,” Alec admits. “The parent groups are a reason to get me out of the house. I work from home so I don’t need to go out very often. I make a routine, y’know.” He’s prone to withdrawing, and the social interaction really does help his mental health, having support from people who don’t have preconceptions about him, who don’t know his history. Parent groups, grocery shopping, play dates, and therapy are what gets him out most weeks, and it’s a pretty good balance right now. 

“You’re invited even if Aiden can’t come,” Alec says, a bit too quickly, and clears his throat. He chuckles. “I’ve never looked. I met Maisey through th... this group therapy and... well looking back I don’t think we were good for each other,” he sighs, putting on a resigned smile. “I’m glad you and your ex get along. I don’t think Maisey wants anything to do with me. She couldn’t even look at Renee before she left.” He’s learning not to feel guilty about that. Choosing to name his daughter, the person he loves most in the entire world after the woman he was held captive with, who gave him hope... he couldn’t regret that.
