he expected some resistance. didn’t expect him to pull out the mom card so fast. raul knows scott’s right, but it’s not going to stop him. this time he’s determined. has been sitting on the idea for years now. timing might be a little off, but things are different. they’re not kids anymore. “ last time was ages ago. just like me getting bit was ages ago. things happen. so why can’t us bringing home a puppy just happen? ”

his eyebrows creep downward. if this energy went into convincing their mom, maybe she would’ve been swayed. ( but then, there’d have to be an argument besides ‘why not?’ ) “because puppies need a lot of stuff? and they’re a lot of work.” scott sounds like his dad. he hates that. a little huff escapes his lips. “when we had roxy, all we had to do was play with her. but dogs need to go on walks and have baths and they need routine. and, i’m really busy, right now. way too busy to make sure a puppy gets fed three times a day. -- people don’t just get dogs without knowing what they’re getting into. not people who wanna be vets.”

this doesn’t feel like the kind of conversation where scott actually has an option. it feels more like a ‘drive me to the pet store’ kind of conversation. but, more importantly, it sounds like the conversation that they wouldn’t be having if a certain parent was involved. “mom doesn’t want another dog, dude. not after last time.”
