Some training highlights with Squire Jess.

I forced her to do some longsword to warmup. She thought she was clunky and shit. I disagree.

Then in her dual daggers against longsword, she got some funny doubles on me. 😅

Squire Jess finally fought the (6'8) leader of the Order of the Blade, Richard Hughes. She opted to fight against longsword with her dagger.

She wants the Booktok girlies and fantasy lovers in general, to know she was able to pull this shit off.

- Grabs the sword mid action while voiding with her head.

- Slides down, knowing she's smaller and harder to hit when she goes to a kneel or crouch.

- Disembowel stab-and-cut.

This was not the only thing she pulled off, but it was one of the coolest by far. 🗡️

For those curious, and because I know some people will be interested...

These are the sort of things you don't see much of the time: the amount of times I train Squire Jess as her teacher, which means forcing her to fight against things she is not ready or easily able to win against.

In the above, you can see some of what she has to face off with to get to be good with a dagger. For a scope of things, I've competed in a few comps where dagger was a weapon option, and never lost. So when I train her, I make sure she's got plenty of things to account for to make her as well rounded as possible.

She gets better every time. So just know that every time you see her do something cool? She earned that moment in training against things like these. 💪

Absolutely not true.

Anyone can do historical fighting. You don't have to begin with an athlete's body. Most people that get into this are neurodivergent but not in a fitness kind of way.

You don't get fit so you can hope to do fencing, you do fencing, and work out what you need to do to get fit if you want to go that route later. Or you just train relentlessly at what you enjoy, and let that be your fitness routine.

If you want to do cool stuff with weapons, there's no better time, than when you want to do it. Not "if I was fitter", just as you are.

I may have Knight-ed a little too close to the sun with Squire Jess tonight.

I decided to teach her armoured dagger. I like harness fencing as I want to fight like a knight, she likes wrestling whenever she can, it's a good combo.

So I decided to teach her a few plays from Czynner's fechtbuch.

Remember that Knight is 6'2, Squire Jess is 5'0. My knees are really close to her reach. No prizes for guessing which of the above figures was me by the end. 😅

If armoured sword is the knightiest art of fencing on foot, is armoured dagger the squire-liest...?

Not fiction I am looking specifically for books on the day to day, layers of clothing, types of armor and weapons, etc. Preferably with lots of illustrations please! I am bad at research because of spicy brain and am strong visual learner. I want to explore what I learn via textiles and crafts.

I am aware that my "sincere" tone often comes out as "passive-aggressive" and I'm working on that. So, with the knowledge I'm going for "sincere" here, I want as many people as possible to know about a key difference between renfaires and SCA events.

Renfaires have audiences. SCA events have participants.

This means that SCA events are often a lot cheaper to get into, because there are no actors practising skits, just nerds like you who have been doing it a bit longer. You still can watch people sing and swordfight, but there's no plot to follow. Because we are doing this for ourselves.

And you can join in! We want you to join in! We want to teach you how to spin flax and swordfight and forge armor and build kilns!

Because you aren't an audience. You're playing the same game as the rest of us and you have to play by the rules. We will loan you garb. It's free, we're happy to do it. But if you refuse to wear it, we are permitted to ask you to leave, because you aren't following the rules of the event.

I know you don't have to wear garb at a renfaire, but the SCA isn't a renfaire.

Anyone can reblog this. Even if you don't intend on attending an SCA event or a renfaire you should know the difference.

I’m kinda surprised that nalbinding isn’t as popular as crochet and knitting tbh because it has an even lower barrier of entry tools wise and unlike crochet and knitting it makes fabric that you can cut.

I guess it’s because it’s slower or something.

Nalbinding aka needle binding is when you use yarn and a big sewing needle to make fabric btw

It also has a lot of different kinds of stitches you can do that make different densities of fabric.

Some people even make rugs.

I feel like part of it might be casual people are generally aware of the existence of crochet and knitting, even if they don’t know very much about either, but have never heard of nalbinding

Yeah I hadn’t heard of it until recently and I ordered a big bone needle for myself to try it out and that should be arriving soon.

I was surprised that I’d never heard of it though. It’s older than knitting and crocheting and even though it’s been done all over the world it’s super relevant to Nordic culture and my grandmother and I are both into keeping in touch with our roots a bit so I’m surprised I’ve never heard of it.

It seems like the sort of thing that would be popular even if not as popular as crocheting and knitting, considering the low barrier of entry.

You also don’t need a bunch of different sized needles for nalbinding or whatever. The size of the stitch is controlled either completely freehand or by pulling it against one of your fingers. Most people who have a lot of nalbinding needles seem to either have tried out wood, bone, and metal ones to see which kind they liked or they enjoy carving wood or bone and like making their own needles as an extra hobby.

It’s also a lot easier to freehand and adjust as you go than crochet or knitting and you mostly go by inches instead of rows and number of stitches so a large number of accessories like stitch markers or whatever isn’t really necessary.

Maybe the lack of accessories also makes it unpopular idk. People do like collecting things in their nests.

I've been wanting to do so, I cannot find anyone who can teach me, and any books I can find on it are Ass in the Visual Learning department. Otherwise I'd be making the hell outta some nalbinded fabric

I thought this would be kind of a niche post to make but I was quickly reminded that I’m on tumblr, the website full of gay people with one billion hobbies.

So my bone needle actually came this evening (yay!) and I’ve started trying this for real. It clicks in my brain way easier than crochet does. I’ve gotta work up the muscle memory but I think I can do this.

The downside as a beginner is that undoing mistakes is more time consuming than with knitting or crochet. You’ve gotta like sew your mistakes out backwards. Disadvantages of making a really sturdy fabric I guess.

I like the feel of this bone needle though and don’t think I’ll be trying the wooden or metal ones.

Also I think I’m gonna have to get good at doing Russian joining if I decide to get good at nalbinding because I don’t have wool yarn and the ends won’t felt together if it’s not at least 50% wool. A small price to pay for using big bone needle though.

Anyways curse of new fiber craft be upon ye.
