After years and years of pining⦠itās finally mine.
Based on a shot from the 1990 miniseries. I have such a soft spot for that series, since it's one of the very few adaptations we have that shows Erik and Christine's relationship in detail. I love when they go from teacher and pupil to friends to lovers. HNNNNNNGGGG.
I know some of you wanted the Leroux kiss to end with a kiss on the mouth, but I actually prefer it the way it is. A kiss on the mouth might have been a clear show of romantic feelings, but a kiss to the forehead carries all the love he was denied in life; platonic, romantic, familial, etc. Thereās something equally beautiful in the fact that Christine chooses to give it. Thereās no pressure on her now. Heās let her go. And still, she chooses to kiss him.
Beyond a doubt. Plus the forehead symbolizes divinity and spiritual connection, which is just so completely perfect because that is the bedrock of their relationship. So a forehead kiss is actually MORE meaningful than on the lips because it is in all regards symbolic of a āhigherā loveāyou might even sayā¦. ālove of the most exquisite kindā⦠agape rather than just erosā¦. Oh, noā¦. I would not trade that exchange of forehead kisses for the world.
AGAIN!!!
ok bro⦠thats an interesting theory⦠i guess???
this is how crime and punishment went, right? š¤
Man, I love him
Some sketches of Saint-Clair and Rouletabille from "The mystery of the yellow room" āļø
Aww, I love this book and characters so much. It's one of those perfect classic detective stories that just doesn't get enough love. I never see any art for it which is a shame, sooo here's my contribution! š¤
And... u know... just listen, i see something like spark between them š¤²š»āØļø
i'm in love with how Saint-Clair calls Rouletabille "my young friend " š

Oh my goodnessāitās art for the Mystery of the Yellow Room! This NEVER happens!
"After giving three taps on the wall, he walked in quietly through a door which I had not noticed and which he left open. He had his arms full of boxes and parcels and arranged them on the bed, in a leisurely fashion, while I overwhelmed him with abuse and called upon him to take off his mask, if it covered the face of an honest man. He replied serenely, 'You shall never see Erik's face.' And he reproached me with not having finished dressing at that time of day: he was good enough to tell me that it was two o'clock in the afternoon. He said he would give me half an hour and, while he spoke, wound up my watch and set it for me. After which, he asked me to come to the dining-room, where a nice lunch was waiting for us."
Raoul and Christine had both disappeared, both had withdrawn far from the world to enjoy a happiness which they would not have cared to make public after the inexplicable death of Count Philippe
They took the train one day from "the northern railway station of the world." Possibly, I too shall take the train at that station, one day, and go and seek around thy lakes, O Norway, O silent Scandinavia, for the perhaps still living traces of Raoul and Christine and also of Mamma Valerius, who disappeared at the same time!
Possibly, some day, I shall hear the lonely echoes of the North repeat the singing of her who knew the Angel of Music...
Epilogue, The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

Thanks @achillmango for the tag! Love seeing these in my inbox š (My list isn't really in any order, btw).
1. The Royal Wedding Series by Rachel Hauck. Read them once a few years ago and I want to do it again--they're such great books.
2. Pride and Prejudice. I never really actually sat and read the book--the Matthew MacFayden movie was a bit more interesting lol :).
3. Powerless by Lauren Roberts. I want to see what the hype is about Kai Azer...if he impresses me or not.
4. The Twilight Books. Again, saw the movies, but never read the books.
5. The Caraval books. From what I've seen of them, they look like something up my alley.
6. Read my Bible more. I feel like with the business and stress in my life, I don't make enough time for God's Word. After all, He is the reason I'm here in the first place; so I'm trying my best to prioritize my Bible above all the other books I'm thinking of reading.

Yay, this one is about BOOKS. Letās seeā¦
1. Currently finishing up The Count of Monte Cristo. (Took nine hundred pages for the story to actually start, but dear goodness, itās so good.)
2. Next will be The Gentle Spirit by Fyodor Dostoevsky (my favorite author to ever exist). This is one of the few stories of his I havenāt read yet, so Iām very excited and have been preparing my soul to be crushed once more.
3. Les MisĆ©rables is a must. Finished Notre-Dame de Paris a while back, and Iām in love with his writing style. Truly a master at his art.
4. Bleak House by Dickens. Because nothing that man writes is bad.
5. The Turn of the Screw. A recommendation from my sister, so weāll see.
6. And finally, Fear and Trembling by Kierkegaard. I started it a while ago, but I was too busy to give it the attention it deserves (30 pages in and could already tell it was a masterpiece), so Iām going to start from the beginning now that I have more time to absorb it properly.

I love the Phantom because he wasnāt āpretty on the insideā.
He was full of hate and disdain for himself and mankind.
And he was beautiful through his gifts and talents. And he was beautiful when he was exposed, when he was unguarded⦠But he was also ugly. He was more complex than simply being a monster or being ugly āon the outsideā.
He was still magnificent, but he changed the rules. He changed the game. He changed everything. He wasnāt kind and he wasnāt terribly sincere and he wasnāt patient or helpful but he was still beautiful.
He was beautiful through his obsessions, his knowledge, his struggle and his downfall.
His struggle, his downfall, his destruction and his insecurities were his beauty.
This is more of a personal interpretation of the book, but I think that Erik, even though he was madly in love with Christine, would have remained her faithful āAngel of Musicā till the end of his days if it had not been for Raoulās presence/threat to their ārelationshipā.
And in that sense, I think itās beautiful that Erik had such deep and sincere love for Christine as to be able to remain nothing but a voice and words of guidance for her, when in truth we all know that he wanted so much more. He wanted a real life, but was willing to not even try to persue it because he was giving Christine happiness by just being a Voice.
I remember how Leroux says (paraphrasing) that Erik had a heart that could hold empires. And Iāve seen the various thoughts and translations regarding what that could mean. But I take it at face (no pun) value, that he had so much love to give and was once had naive and innocent, pure love, and there is still some of that in his heart. Christine rekindled that.
I think it took work and telling himself over and over the world wasnāt worth loving and people were inherently bad. It helped him survive and cope with the hatred and abuse he faced. But somewhere in his heart he was the ever-optimist.
Be right back, Iām actually sobbing about my husband.
I literally have never seen a more beautifully accurate account of this man.
The other day, I was trying to explain to a friend the difference between Erik and Quasimodo from the Hunchback, and I got caught up in this distinction. Erik isnāt a moving character just because heās a softy misunderstood by society. Heās awful. Heās terrifying. He IS horrific. And itās the dichotomy within him that makes him so compelling. Itās the fact that he is both Angel AND Phantom. The point of the novel is in the question: āShall we pity him? Shall we curse him?ā Itās a choice that Leroux puts to every reader, having given them evidence and justification for either options. It isnāt sugar-coated; itās raw and real. Itās life and death. Itās shocking but itās truth. Just like Christine in the first unmasking scene, we are exposed to it in all its horror; but it is only through this very horror, the full expression of his madness and his grief, that we are able to experience the heights of his innate divinity and, like Christine, finally recognize the truth of his identity: āthe most unhappy and sublime of men,ā a man acquainted in equal measure with both Heaven and Hell.
We must never forget that our Erik is tragic hero. Uncomfortable and doomed but, because of this, oh so beautiful.
I noticed this the other day and it made me sad.
At the end of All I Ask Of You, Christine says she must go and is about to leave when Raoul sings "Christine, I love you" and she turns back and goes to him, they end up leaving the scene together all happy and in love.
Phantom tried to do that at the end of Final Lair, his "Christine, I love you" is an attempt at making Christine stay the same way he saw Raoul do in the rooftop :(
