Mannaya Kasha: The breakfast all Russians love to hate

This Soviet version of Cream of Wheat has fallen out of favor among young Russians, but the older generation remains loyal to this breakfast of their childhood.

After doing the Russian food challenge yesterday morning, I think I’ve found a new breakfast favorite. While this might have become unpopular with Russian kids, it has certainly found a place in my heart. And my tummy. 😋

Prep time! (Part 2) -- Anne

As per my previous post, I realized I needed more food for tomorrow’s video shoot. And since today was pretty busy for me and I didn’t have ample time to cook, I decided to save myself by just buying a couple of dishes from a restaurant on Main Street. (Sorry, Maryia!! ✌)

I’ve only been to Josephine’s once before and I only tried their halo-halo, which is basically shaved ice with milk and various toppings, so I honestly have not tried eating cooked food here. I am quite picky when it comes to Filipino food, so…. I’ll just hope for the best!! As much as I want to prepare an excellent dish for this project, I’m afraid my schedule won’t allow it. I just hope Maryia won’t be disappointed tomorrow! Wish me luck!

Prep time! (Part 1) --Anne

Maryia and I agreed that I would try Belarusian food on Wednesday and that she would try Filipino food the following day. So right after our Monday class, I went to T&T Supermarket in Chinatown, Vancouver to get my hands on some Filipino goodies.    

I think I spent about an hour going around the aisles but too bad they only had quite a small selection of Filipino products. Boohoo! Luckily enough, they had some of the staples we Filipinos like to snack on so I grabbed a few things which are very familiar to me.

Next on the agenda, go to Aling Mary’s on Main Street.

Aling Mary’s is a Filipino store on Main Street famous in the Filipino community for its freshly-baked pandesal, which is a common bread roll in the Philippines, but they also sell typical grocery items and ready-to-eat Filipino dishes.  I won’t tell you what I bought, but just to give you a clue, here’s a quick description of our food.

Filipino cuisine centres around the combination of sweet (tamis), sour (asim), and salty (alat),[2] although in Bicol, the Cordilleras and among Muslim Filipinos, spicy (anghang) is a base of cooking flavor. Counterpoint is a feature in Philippine cuisine which normally comes in a pairing of something sweet with something salty, and results in surprisingly pleasing combinations.

I initially thought that I had everything I need to give Maryia a taste of the Philippines, but after eating her Russian food this morning (see her related post), I think I may have to make another trip to the store tonight. We meet again, blogosphere.

So for this week’s school project, we’re supposed to pair up with a classmate, create a blog, and write entries for the next few days. Writing your own blog is already quite a task but writing with a partner can be extremely daunting if you can’t find a common interest, or if either one doesn’t know how to adapt or compromise. In addition, the last time I blogged was two years ago, and I have been cutting back on my social media activities for the majority of 2016 and so I was quite apprehensive to say the least. Fortunately though, one of my favorite ladies in class, Maryia, ran excitedly to me saying she has an idea for this project… and it’s all because of this guy.

Say hello to Kvas. If you don’t know what it is, then here’s a description from Wikipedia.

Kvass is a traditional Slavic and Baltic fermented beverage commonly made from black or regular rye bread.[1] The colour of the bread used contributes to the colour of the resulting drink. It is classified as a non-alcoholic drink by Russian standards, as the alcohol content from fermentation is typically low (0.5–1.0%)

So it’s basically a bread drink! 🍞 UH-MAZING. I was so intrigued when Maryia and her husband offered me this drink because I haven’t heard of anything like it before. I didn’t know what to expect but I immediately took a liking when I had a sip, probably because I like sourdough and rye bread. Yeah, I’m weird like that. Lol. 😂

Anyway, the idea for the project came about from that experience and from visiting a Russian store downtown with Maryia and some friends a couple of nights ago. And since we’re doing this blog thing, we might as well have fun with it, right? Sooo… we decided to do a food challenge! Yaasss! Foooodddd! I won’t go into details for now, but I am quite hyped up thinking about what snacks I might get to eat. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I am one hungry person. 😋

So yes, I will embrace this compulsory activity with an open mind and a welcoming stomach. Bye for now!
