It's actually crazy that for the whole of Season 5, characters keep joking that Lucifer is taking Sam to the prom only for "Swan Song" to reveal that Sam's prom date, was in fact, possessed by a demon. So in a way, Lucifer did take Sam to the prom.

It was probably also deeply upsetting for sam because his whole life, he’s been trying to take back his autonomy. He had no choice in hunting, John raised him into it. He finally makes his own decision for once and goes to college, at the cost of losing Dean and John. He finally gets to live a normal life only to find it was all set up. Heaven made John and Mary get together so he can be born. His college friends were demons. His teachers were demons. He was even set up with Jessica by a demon. Jess, who was his escape to a normal life, was killed just so he can go back to hunting. His whole life was always set up for him to say yes to Lucifer. He was never free at all.

"The End" is so fascinating because Dean starts the episode telling Sam that they are each other's weakness and they should probably stay far apart from each other for as long as possible and then the minute Dean's in the future, he's like, "We weren't with Sam when Lucifer took him???? We never tried to look for him???? We never tried to reunite with him????"

It's only been a couple hours since that phone call and he still can't comprehend never seeing Sam again. Dean probably saw that phone call as something they would get past eventually even if he couldn't exactly imagine how and being faced with a Dean who never tried to make up with Sam again is truly incomprehensible to him.

I truly will never be over the fact that Dean rewrote his whole memory so he didn't have to remember that Castiel pushed him away at the Purgatory portal. He would rather think that he failed to save Castiel than deal with the fact that Castiel let go.

We see many times where Dean has a warped perspective on something or isn't willing to see all of the facts, but literally rewriting a memory...what else has Dean Winchester rewritten in his mind?

I love a classic Sam Winchester changing the subject so he doesn't have to talk about his problems moment. "How is your salad?" "So you and Jo are hunting again" "Yes, I'm still having nightmares about Jessica. But how do you feel about hunting, Dean?" "I am going to ask you questions about the case we're on instead of answering your concerned look, Dean." But how are you doing, Dean? Yes, we could talk about the fact that I almost died of sleep deprivation because of my wall being broken and the Devil tormenting me, but Castiel took on my burden and is stuck in a mental hospital. How does that make you feel, Dean? Do you want to talk about your feelings? I probably have feelings about this too since Castiel is my friend and he was the one to break my wall in the first place, but how does that make you feel, Dean?" And Dean falls right into Sam's avoidance trap because he's so offended at the idea of talking about his feelings that he forgot the whole point was talking about Sam's feelings in the first place.

And even if Dean is actively listening and Sam is starting to talk about his feelings, it's so easy for Sam to get spooked simply by Dean making eye contact with him or Sam being too vulnerable and then he does a classic laugh it off and say that it'll be fine...eventually...probably...Anyway, how are you doing, Dean?

Sometimes, I see something for the first time and it takes me a little bit to see why a ship is popular, slowly seeing the tension build between characters and realizing the potential. And sometimes, I see the last five minutes of "Lazarus Rising" and realize immediately everything I need to know about why Destiel works.

"Houses of the Holy" is truly THE episode because it gives a perfect look into Sam's psyche showing Sam's desperation to be worthy of being saved by some higher power because he already knows that something dark has claimed him. At the same time, the insight we get into Dean's feelings about angels is perfect foreshadowing for why Destiel is going to be really interesting (which is even funnier because angels weren't even going to be a thing in Supernatural at that point) as well as an interesting look into Dean's faith in general. Dean's lack of faith and Sam's desperate faith play off of each other in such a fascinating way that makes the episode such a good character study for both of them.

Castiel IS the Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen version and Disney).

He is a young angel who becomes fascinated by humanity both because of the man whose life he saved but also because of his innate curiosity and rebelliousness. Sing "Part of Your World" and imagine Castiel singing it. It's a wonderful time. He loses a significant part of himself to be with the humans (he loses his powers when he falls for the first time, but he also literally loses everything including his wings later). Similar to the Hans Christian Andersen version, his siblings ask him to kill the one he loves in order to go back with them at the end of Season 9 (like how the Little Mermaid's siblings ask her to stab her prince with the knife to be a mermaid again).

Also, dissolving into sea foam=being taken by the Empty.

Also, if you read the original version of the story, it talks a lot about human souls and how different they are from what mermaids are and the importance of the Little Mermaid finally being able to feel.

truly some people have no genre savviness whatsoever. A girl came back from the dead the other day and fresh out of the grave she laughed and laughed and lay down on the grass nearby to watch the sky, dirt still under her nails. I asked her if she’s sad about anything and she asked me why she should be. I asked her if she’s perhaps worried she’s a shadow of who she used to be and she said that if she is a shadow she is a joyous one, and anyway whoever she was she is her, now, and that’s enough. I inquired about revenge, about unfinished business, about what had filled her with the incessant need to claw her way out from beneath but she just said she’s here to live. I told her about ghosts, about zombies, tried to explain to her how her options lie between horror and tragedy but she just said if those are the stories meant for her then she’ll make another one. I said “isn’t it terribly lonely how in your triumph over death nobody was here to greet you?” and she just looked at me funny and said “what do you mean? The whole world was here, waiting”. Some people, I tell you.
