Question Time: How To Shut Down A Scene.

A follower send me the following question/message: Hey. Sorry to bother you for advice again. But I was hoping you might have experience with this? My partner has said that she sometimes gets so deep in subspace that she doesn’t use her safeword. Previously this has lead to really issues for her and I am worried about that. We’ve had discussions during which we couldn’t come up with a way to snap her out of it. So I was wondering whether you have had experience with such a thing?

I commend you for putting her safety first by reaching out and asking for advice on the matter.

Before I move over to answer your question I want to cease the opportunity to explain a few things as well. There is a reason Safe, Sane and Consensual are the cornerstones of any BDSM play after all.

As a dominant it is our responsibility to guide our submissive safely through a scene, no matter how gentle or hard-core you play. And by safely I mean both physically and emotionally.

It is one thing to have a submissive who’s (current) limits are being pushed and sometimes breached – within the agreed upon goals/desires/limits prior to engaging in any kind of play – or a submissive that falls into the abyss for “no apparent reason”.

When a submissive’s limits are being pushed or breached when working towards a certain goal – again, be sure do discuss this upfront with them and in length - it is not uncommon for them to become overwhelmed or lost by new or much stronger sensations to the point where they can no longer function or think properly.

The “no apparent reason” is, to my experience, trigged by a sometimes unaware more vulnerable state of mind. Whether this is due to stress or fatigue or grief or an illness or a combination of life in general the outcome is the same.

To give you a concrete example; I’ve learned that my boy is particularly sensitive to them after being apart for a longer period of time. He can get so overwhelmed and lost, almost high on sensations, even with the softest of touches he’s almost incapable of holding himself up.

Is there a way to snap them out of it? No. For one, no submissive is equipped with an on/off button.

Is there a way to recognize the signs? Yes!

· Trust your instincts and your gut; when something doesn’t feel right, you can bet your sweet ass something really isn’t right.

· When their speech is reduced to nothing but gibberish.

· When they seem unaffected by whatever is you do and are stuck on an endless repetition of more/harder.

· Check in with your sub; ask for their safeword. In case you don’t have one because you go by the traffic light system ask them their name and/or yours. If they can’t answer your question(s) coherently and immediately you need to end to scene.

After ending the scene: aftercare, aftercare and more aftercare.

· Give them something to drink, preferable smalls sips. Make sure you hold the bottle – I’ve learned my boy’s coordination is way off at first.

· Hold them, literally press your bodies together and assure them they’re safe, that everything is alright. Let them know they made you proud.

· If needed change their clothes or cover them in a soft t-shirt or blanket.

· I always have babywipes at hand, it helps to refresh their face/hands/chest/etc..
