“You just answered your own question, Hunter,” Angela tutted, gesturing with her hands as she spoke. “You’re around children all day, which means you have a responsibility to be a good role model for them. That includes modelling good grooming and hygiene behaviours.”

Hunter groaned, shaking his head back and forth childishly. “Don’t remind me, Ang. They freak me out. One day they’ll push me just far enough, and I swear to god I’ll have some sort of nervous breakdown and quit, and flee to Eastern Europe and become a hermit or a shepherd or a soothsayer or... something.”

“No — I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you at first,” she apologized warmly as she released him from her arms, bouncing back on her heels. Sophie took a moment to eye him from the head to toe. “You look good, though — you weren’t this tall in middle school.” It took her a moment to realize the fact that it wasn’t just a reunion, but she was on her way to work, which caused her to glance at her wrist for a second. “Blue Line, actually. I work at WHDH — channel 7 news? I don’t know if you watch the news or anything, but…” she trailed off.

“I – oh, yeah. Right.” He let out a nervous laugh, feeling more self-conscious than usual about his height. “I don’t know how it happened. I mean, you’ve seen my mom, she’s not – So it’s probably... Ah, uh...” Even though the Museum of Science was off the Green Line, he found himself blurting, “Me, too,” and heading towards the Blue Line with the familiar stranger. “I don’t watch the news. I don’t have a TV. How long have you lived here? I didn’t... I mean, I didn’t forget you existed, I just... you know. Being... twelve is stored so far back in my brain.”

Sarah listened to Hunter carefully, nodding in the process. She may haven’t been into science nor space in the first place but she was smart enough to understand what he was talking about. “Yes it does.” She nodded again. “So, let me get this straight, you are saying that there are other people or aliens or whatever in those four planets?” Sarah asked, raising her brows. “What do you wanna do with this information? Like do you wanna prove that there’s a life on those planets? Sounds cool to me. Honestly, I hope that’s not just a possibility because it would be so cool if we can actually live in another planet.”

“Well, to be frank...” He paused, actually considering his words for once. “I think it’s important that the right people figure out what’s alive out there. The scientists who discover – and possibly communicate – with the inhabitants of the Trappist system are going to be the only things standing between destruction and genocide. It’ll be intergalactic colonization... I can’t believe I just said that in regard to a real thing.”

Elena laughed, “You find Libraries scary?” She questioned and thought about the time a Librarian yelled at her for misplacing the books in the shelves. Not like she understood the whole coding, she practically almost failed Library Science. “I take it you’re not much of a horror fan?”

“I don’t know! Kind of!” He crossed his arms defensively, an embarrassed blush starting to rise in his cheeks. “Have you ever fallen asleep in the library? And then the librarians don’t see you, so they accidentally lock you in, and when you wake up it’s pitch black and you can’t figure out how to turn the lights on, but then you move and the lights are automatic and they all turn on like dominos.”

“What?” Hunter scrunched his nose, trying to recall the last time he’d seen a horror movie – or any movie, really. “I’m looking forward to the New York Public Library documentary to be released to the public. Does that count? Libraries can be scary. If you don’t re-shelve books properly.”

“Figured.” She nodded her head. “Why would I say tell me more if I didn’t want to know? Oh don’t worry, I am not worried about that. Listen, you need to know something about me. I don’t say things I don’t mean to, okay? If I say I wanna know more, that means I wanna no more. Life is too short for pretending to care. Well she has to understand because we are romantically incompatible but that doesn’t mean we can’t be friends.”

“Okay, okay,” he nodded, attempting to gather his thoughts as coherently as he could possibly manage before word-vomiting everywhere. “The Trappist-1 system. Right. It has seven planets in it, and it’s only about 39 lightyears from our sun. All seven of the planets are Earth-sized, and three – possibly four – of them have been confirmed to exist in a habitable zone. And this is important not only because it presents a possibility for the renewal and reinvention of human civilization, but because if we can live there, that means something else most likely already does live there. We just don’t know what yet.” He finished finally, taking a deep breath of relief. Hunter wasn’t one to voluntarily talk much, but when he did, it was usually a ramble that made him run out of breath. “Does that make sense?”

“What’s wrong with messy?” he retorted, tempted to ruin Angela’s hard work with a swipe of his fingers. “I’m surrounded by kids all day, anyway. They don’t care what my hair looks like. Or if they do, maybe messy hair only makes me more relatable.”

You can explain, I’d love to listen.”

“I probably won’t,” he replied automatically, failing to think about how his words might be interpreted by the redhead sitting across from him. “Do you really want to know? You don’t have to say that you’d love to listen because you feel obligated to, or because you’re worried that Nevis will get upset that we’re completely romantically incompatible. I think she’ll understand, even though she did have high hopes for us.”

Something in his voice had sounded familiar — or at least more familiar than the normal strangers she had approaching her who watched the local news. But she hadn’t been able to place the voice until he uttered a name that took her back fifteen years to the awkward time in her life before she wore makeup anywhere but on the stage and she wore butterfly clips in her blonde hair. But she wasn’t fourteen anymore; Sophie was nearly thirty and fully grown from that stage in her life. Fifteen years looked like they had been kind to Hunter as well, though she didn’t really know if she thought about her childhood best friend in much more context other than a vague memory from time-to-time. Never had she thought that she would’ve see him when they were both fully-fledge adults. People who grew impatient behind them threw them dirty looks as they went through other stalls while Sophie stood there stunned for an extended moment. If she normally swore, she probably would’ve in that moment. “Oh my goodness, really? Wait — wow — how have you been?” Without a second thought, she pulled him into a hug.

The stunned silence they stood in didn’t make Hunter feel any less anxious, but finally he saw a sign of recognition in her eyes and allowed himself to let out the breath he’d been holding. “I didn’t know if you’d–” he began, laughing nervously under his breath as she wrapped her arms around him. “I’ve been good, uh – Wow. I don’t know what to... Are you taking the Green Line? I’ll walk with you. And thanks for the, uh, swipe. I’m a mess. Still. That hasn’t changed. But – Uh. Wow, uhm–” Hunter, who could process and understand anything, was suddenly finding himself unable to do so.

“What do you mean you don’t meet people you already know? They are your friends, I mean.. you need to meet them at some point.” She gasped, widening her eyes. Sarah loved spending time with her friends, so what he said was shocking to her. “Oh that sounds interesting. Planetarium looks pretty, I bet after La La Land, people wanna bring their dates to there and watch stars.” She chuckled. The red head chuckled as he kept speaking – God, what was Nevis thinking? “At least we have something in common. I don’t like children either. But I love crowds, I love chaos, I love mess. I don’t mind public speaking. Unfortunately college degree doesn’t land you jobs magically.” She sighed. “I do comedy. Improv mostly. I used to perform at open mic nights. I worked for SNL last year, then I got fired.” She stated bluntly, chuckling bitterly at herself and reached the glass, so she could drink some water. “What would you rather do with your degree though? I am curious now.”

If it was socially acceptable to get up and leave with no explanation, Hunter would have done it. But even he (who failed to understand many social cues) knew that running away was out of the question. “I haven’t seen La La Land,” he replied bluntly, offering her nothing more than a small shrug. “What got you fired? Was it your fault or someone else’s? And, well...” Now he paused, mulling over how he might accurately explain his thoughts about work. Of course, he couldn’t. Not to someone he’d just met, not even to himself. “I want to do something that helps me understand the universe in a new way. Like... the TRAPPIST-1 system. You know?” He doubted she knew.

It was more and more lately that Sophie found herself dreading going to work. Though the fact that she was in Boston still had its shiny new feeling with over a year of living there under her belt, she didn’t feel the same way with her job. Unfortunately, it happened with most jobs that she had in the last few years, but everyone warned her that’s what life was like when she was in high school and college — living through the motions of being an adult. She had been sucked into the same routine of going through the T to get to work when she was stopped, but even that wasn’t unusual. Sophie blinked at him for a second, cocking her head ever-so-slightly before a natural smile spread across her lips. “Yeah, uh — that’s me. I’m actually headed to the station right now.” Fishing the card that already was in her ready fingers out of her pocket, she swiped it against the reader without hesitation.

“Oh. Oh.” She didn’t recognize him. Obviously. Why had he assumed she would? The last time they’d seen each other, Hunter was thirteen. Back then he was barely 5′4″, his hair was lighter and somehow messier, his neck too long for his body, his feet, hands, and ears too big, his legs too skinny. It wasn’t until after they parted ways for high school that Hunter shot up like a rocket and grew into his features. But Sophie’d barely changed – at least not so much that he couldn’t recognize her. “Sophie. I’m – It’s, uh – I’m Hunter. Antonopoulos. Hunter Antonopoulos. From La Plata. Silver City. We went to middle school together...?” he offered, embarrassment suddenly flooding directly into his stomach.

Once the guy stood up, Sarah narrowed her eyes at the taller guy. He was tall, very very tall. The situation was awkward, it reminded her of one of her failed auditions. “Yeah I am Sarah. Nice to meet you Hunter.” She forced a smile. “Through a mutual friend. We became friends quickly. She’s friendly, but you probably know that already.” Leaning her back, the red head forced another smile. “God, this is so awkward.” She said under her breath. “I haven’t been on a blind date for ages. So, I am a little bit rusty.” Adding with a nod, Sarah placed her hands on the table. “So, tell me Hunter. What do you do?” Now she sounded like one of those bosses who ask annoying questions to their applicants.

“Ah. Uhm. Yes. Yes it is. I don’t... go on dates. I don’t like dates. Or meeting new people, really. Or meeting people I already know.” He paused, letting the silence between them fill up the restaurant. “Oh. I work at the museum. Of science. The Boston Museum of Science. I take care of the planetarium and give tours and do research work on the side. It’s not my ideal job. I don’t like children. Or crowds. Or public speaking. One would think that I’d be doing more with my PhD from Harvard.” What a terrible attempt at a joke. Hunter found himself cringing, looking down at the napkin in his lap. “And you act. Comedy. Improv?” He hoped one of those was right; he didn’t exactly remember what Nevis had told him.

Hunter liked to think that he was rarely late, yet time and time again he found himself sprinting to the T, skateboard under his arm, to hop on the green line towards the museum. And while his day-to-day level of disarray was always a crapshoot, today was especially disastrous. After about thirty seconds of searching his pockets for his Charlie Card, Hunter’s stomach filled with dread; instinctively, he spun around and approached the nicest-looking stranger he could find. "Hi, I'm so sorry, but could you tap me into –– Sophie... Starr...?" Now he found that the words had left him. This wasn't a stranger at all.
