He’s owned The Booze Barn for 3 years, worked there as a bartender when he graduated high school (2001) before he moved to Dallas.

Moved to Dallas in 2010 (age 27) with his girlfriend. They lived together for a while until he found her cheating on him with a guy from her job. He moved back to Madison 5 years ago.

He was pretty sure he and his girlfriend, Leah, were going to get married. He’d started looking at rings and was saving up some money for a few months when they broke up.

Moved back to town and got his job back bartending at The Booze Barn. The owner wanted to retire 3 years ago so he bought the place. He’d kept saving money from when he was going to buy a ring and added to it, so he had the cash.

Levi was visiting him when his wife was killed in an accident so there’s part of Hunter that feels like his leaving town played a part in that whole thing. Talk about that guilty conscious tho

Saffron was rarely taken off guard by the complexity of human nature. Los Angeles was a gigantic cesspool of myriad identities. Considering the majority of the population migrated from some place else she’d interacted with all sorts of personalities. Granted most are either wannabes or derelicts – to which she was the latter – and the rest are mostly asshole studio types that think because they make $40K working for CBS they can also walk on water. As much as Madison’s established atmosphere baffled her, she was beginning to understand that southern hospitality wasn’t a myth and saturated every inch of the town. The archetypes were far from atypical, pretty much everyone she’d met thus far were the same. Polite, welcoming – it turned her stomach. What she expected when she quipped her rather flippant comment about the chosen playlist, with the purposeful intent of offense, was the interview to come to an abrupt end. But sur-motherfucking-prise, was it possible she was sitting across from someone who dared stray from the Madison status quo. He had all the visual markers of a old fashion southern gent but clearly there was something hidden beneath the surface and Saffy as admittedly intrigued. And he has a sense of humor, she mused to herself. 

One unkempt brow quirked, she rested her forearms on the table and leaned forward. “You do know this is a country bar that you own right?” the mock concern in her tone denoted the sarcasm. “So if honky tonk isn’t your jive then what is? I’m curious”. Saffy was the one meant to be answering questions, it was her interview after all, but she could never breeze past the topic of music taste. “Hip Hop your groove? You a techno head? No wait, I got it” she smirked, enjoying her joke a little too much. “New Wave right? I bet you really bust a move for some B52′s” she was full on grinning now, gaze lit with mirth. “How close am I?” 

Hunter wasn’t sure why he tended to hire ruffians, flirts and otherwise not the normal people as bartenders. Morgan was, honestly, the most normal person on his staff, and she was sleeping with him... Which just went to show how not the usual things were around The Booze Barn. Regardless, he figured the bartenders needed to have character of some kind, and the woman before him? She had character. “It was a country bar when I bought it, too,” he pointed out with a finger hovering in the air just above the glass of whiskey on the counter.

Listening to her ramble off music made Hunter roll his eyes, but that didn’t hide the slightest upward nudge of his mouth. “I don’t know half the shit you just said, hon,” he said. It didn’t slip ‘hon’ or ‘honey’ in often, mostly just when he was trying very hard not to hit on someone, which wasn’t often. Something about the woman in front of him gave off a vibe that she probably wouldn’t go for it, and Hunter could appreciate that enough to respect her. “I’m more of a Petty, Mellencamp, Henley kind of guy. Are you even old enough to know who those legends are, kid?”

“I will take a gin and tonic, good sir.” Kennedy hissed with a teasing wink. “And a side of cherries. You can put it on my tab.” She happily ignored the chasing yellow rays that danced across the slots of the booze barn. What did it matter if it was noon on her day off? It’s five o’clock somewhere.

Hunter couldn’t help the look of confusion on his face as Kennedy ordered an actual drink. He hadn’t ever seen her do that, and if he were the kind of person to give a damn, he might ask her what was up. The thing was though, Hunter didn’t give a damn. He never had and honestly probably never would. “Coming right up,” he said with a nod, moving to make the gin and tonic she’d ordered. Dumping some cherries into a shot glass, he set both on the counter next to Kennedy. “You gonna dance up there or am I just supposed to let you sit your ass on my bar top like we’re a couple of girlfriends at a sleepover?”

“I’m up for anything, Prescott,” Hunter replied with complete certainty. He wasn’t one to shy away from anything sexual as long as it felt good. Watching Matt undo his zipper brought a smile to Hunter’s lips as he raised a brow at the man’s words. “I was hoping I’d get to taste that cock.” Hunter lowered his legs from the desk and scooted the wheels of the chair even closer to Matt before pulling the denim even lower. When he got Matt’s dick out of the underwear he was wearing, Hunter immediately went to work running his tongue fully along it before taking it in his mouth.

Cassandra let out a small laugh at this words, “The best night of your life?” Her brow raised at what she hoped was an exaggeration, “I mean, certainly we can hope that there are other nights in your life that are better than me keeping your gentleman card intact, here?” She tipped her head to the side, sipping on her drink before her. 

“Okay, maybe not the best but, I mean, there’s always a little potential left for something exciting to happen, right?” Hunter leaned forward, gesturing toward her drink. “You get enough to drink and we can have ourselves all kinds of fun. Sometimes not being very gentlemanly is actually the best way to have a good time.”

A change is as good as a holiday. Her mom had always said that, and she never got the meaning particularly until her week in Savannah, having taken a photography job and managed to grab some new bookings in the coming weeks. It was exciting, and she felt that she needed a new refreshing change as well. Her hair now back to its natural brunette tones, the bangs frames her face as she line danced alongside the regulars she had been serving all night. There were enough bartenders for her to join quickly, something she’d been unable to resist as she had whipped around collecting glasses. When the song came to an end she was breathless, about to pick up her tray when she spotted someone watching. 

“Thank you, thank you, I’m here all night.”

Hunter couldn’t be the least bit mad at Morgan for sneaking off to dance. After all, she was a customer favorite and got the job done every time. Leaning against the table that she’d set her tray on, he had a certain glint in his eyes as she spoke. “Yeah, yeah,” he said, waving his hand in her direction. “Don’t I pay you to pour the drinks instead of dancin’ around like some kind of country bumpkin?” His voice was lighthearted and there was no hiding the smile on his face as he asked her, knowing full well that Morgan joining in on the line dancing was much better for business than keeping her tucked behind the bar.

“It’s appreciated,” she stated with a sincerity she might not have used back in Chicago. Though, those type of men were not looking to be protective out of the kindness of their heart. They were looking for a repayment after saving a damsel in distress, so Cass vowed to not be the one they had to save the day for. She was tired of men feeling entitled to her company just because they thought they did her a favor. “Oh, really?” Her brow raised by the tone of his words, intriguing her slightly. “Well, for this moment you can remain a gentleman.”

Giving her a nod of understanding, Hunter lifted a clean glass from the stack in front of her, taking a towel he’d sat down earlier and wiping inside the rim. It was clean, sure, but something about the motions made him feel like a real bartender. Not that he needed to prove himself, it just helped him play the part more than anything. “Well, I sure do appreciate you givin’ me the opportunity to hold this title for a night. It might just be the best night of my life.”

Vick laughed a little, “Oh you would really call a beautiful girl like me out on it? Ouch.” She laughed, “Hey I would never hide from you, you should know that.” She laughed before running a hand through her hair for a moment, “Oh I know you’re not judging me, but like it’s all true I don’t have family to hang out with, my work doesn’t keep my busy enough and well I don’t have that many sexual partners.” She laughed raising her eyebrows for a moment. “I don’t think that is really my scene.” She laughed a little shaking her head and tilted her head, “Oh I am not jealous, I don’t think i am anyway. Well you got any plans for tonight?” 

“I’m all about callin’ beautiful girls out for avoidin’ me. You don’t get to get off that easy, not in that sense.” Hunter couldn’t help it, the way the words rolled off his tongue or that he accented it with a wink. His eyes flicked up to her hand in her hair and his smile twitched upward into an even bigger grin as he watched her do it. “Oh, so what I’m hearin’ is that I’m your favorite, then.” He was absolutely reading more into what she was saying than was probably there, but that was Hunter Maddox for you. Open the door and he’d barge right in like a bull in a china shop. “It’s okay, I can see it written all over your face. Jealousy is normal when it comes to this sort of thing. My plans for tonight? Aren’t you cute, gettin’ right to the point like that. Well, I could probably fit you in, if you wanted me to swing by later. Or you can come to my place. Think you can wait that long?”

Matthew worked quickly, fixing up the truck in record speed before he closed the hood and deposited his tools in his truck. He made his way inside and popped into the bathroom to wash the grease from his hands before nodding at the bartender and heading down the hallway to where Hunter’s office was. The door was slightly ajar so he knocked twice before toeing his way inside, seeing the other man at his desk with his feet kicked up. “Told ya I wouldn’t be long.” He slipped inside and closed the door behind him, walking up to his desk and taking one of the glasses of beer that was waiting and taking a long sip of it. “Have you guys always carried this IPA or only once I came in here and started bitchin’ about the beer selection.” He set the glass down and took a few steps around the desk and stopped right in front of him, cocking his head to the side as he looked at Hunter, leaning back in his chair. 

“So about that somethin’ extra.”

Hunter kept his eyes on Matthew’s frame, appreciating the angle of his view as the man moved around his desk. “What can I say? I’m a smart businessman. When someone has a suggestion worth listening to, I hear ‘em out.” Hunter reached his hand out from where he was sitting, feet still propped on the desk, and slipped his hand to the inside of Matt’s thigh. Sliding it higher as he talked, Hunter returned his gaze to Matt’s face. When he reached the bulge he’d caught himself eyeing earlier, Hunter used his thumb to stroke it through the jeans Matt was wearing. “Tell me how you like it and I’ll make it worth your while, Matty,” he said.

Logan had only thought about the question Austin had asked her a few weeks ago in her kitchen, knowing the very thin line she had been walking down with the man in front of her. Although, the woman never expected much because the friendship between her brother and him was ten times more important than whatever tension was thickening in the air. She nodded her head at his words, glancing down at her dress before lifting her gaze back up towards the male in front of her as she turned her head to follow where his eyes went, finding them on Austin and Greer, knowing how possible it was she was going to hear all about that later. “Guess we will have to see where the night takes me,” she murmured before her head turned to look over at him at the next set of words that came out of his mouth. “Really? Who should I be wastin’ my time with?”

Hunter was certain that, had Austin been wrapped around any other woman’s waist, he would’ve been shooting daggers through his best friend at this exact moment. Or at least, that’s what he assumed would be the case. Thankfully, Austin was in Greer’s arms, the only ones that could completely encapsulate all of Austin’s focus. Reaching a hand up from her waist, Hunter tucked a strand of hair behind Logan’s ear, eyes following his fingertips so he didn’t get caught up in her gaze again. For anyone who didn’t feel the tension between them, the unaddressed sexual frustration that somehow was rearing its head now more than ever, it’d look like a friendly enough gesture. It could be construed that way if anyone were to ask, or to look over right as he did it, and Hunter knew that. He had to steer things back into a safer space, somewhere it could rest until he had a chance to talk to Austin. “Guess so,” he said with a nod, lips pressed tightly together. “I don’t know, Lo, a guy who deserves you. Not the usual punks you keep draggin’ into my bar, tryin’ to rile me up.”

Cassandra’s short laugh was amused as he mentioned a similar situation being at hand if she was in Dallas. “Typically I’m used to having to do that myself,” she admitted to him. Cassandra never felt short of having to take care of herself out in the city. It hadn’t been easy, not at first. No, Cassandra felt like she eyes following her everywhere until she learned to stand up for herself. “Good to know,” she smiled over at him, happy that she was at able to get some stable conversation before the bar began to fill with its regulars. “Aren’t you quite the gentleman?” She offered him another smile, head tipping to the side. 

“Yeah, but I have a protective streak in me, so I lend helpin’ hand when I see a chance,” Hunter replied. It was truer than most people realized, the man having taken his own brother under his wing so early on in life that he didn’t know how to do anything but protect people. It was a natural carry over for him to do the same as a bartender, then later as a bar owner. “Trust me, hon, I’m  the furthest thing from an actual gentleman. Anyone in town will tell you that.”

Vick sat there for a moment smiling over at the guy for a moment and laughed, “I mean the temptation to hide from you is there now that you have mentioned it.” She laughed a little looking over at him for a moment and shock her head, “Not really, I mean how busy can I be in a library? And what family do I have to be busy with?” She laughed at the last comment, “Not really.” She laughed, “But hey what have you been busy with? Really great sex that anyone would want from you?” She laughed at her own comment there.  

“Oh, really? Okay, well, now I’ll keep an extra good eye out to see if you’re doin’ it and then I’ll shock the whole town when I show up at the library to call you out for it.” Everyone in Madison would probably die at the sight of Hunter Maddox anywhere near the library doors, not to mention inside. “I’m not here to judge you, I don’t know what you’re up to. Maybe you’ve got some kind of secret life, I hear there’s good money to be had as a dominatrix. You’d do great at that, you know?” Shaking his head, Hunter gave her a playful roll of his eyes. “Oh, don’t be jealous, baby, you know you’re always welcome to join me in my bed.”

Logan’s eyes briefly flickered to his lips, finding herself for the first time in a while feeling the need to close the distance between them. It would have shocked her if it wasn’t something they had danced around at the Booze Barn a few weeks ago. Somehow, it didn’t make her jealous that he had come with someone. The dynamic the two of them had was special in its own way even if the moment between them right now was the most fucking confusing thing she had ever been through. She let her fingers brush through the short strands of his dark blonde hair, her eyes moving along the features of his face. There were two ways to take this answer; coming up with someone and making a joke out of the whole thing or telling him that was something she was still thinking about. “I haven’t figured it out yet,” she whispered, her eyes resting on him as she dropped her hand from his hair, resting it on the side of his neck. “Guess it all depends on who isn’t goin’ home with someone…”

Hunter wasn’t sure if he’d really expected this tension between them to grow tonight, but honestly, he didn’t find himself minding it all that much. What he did mind, however, was that he hadn’t had a chance to talk to Austin yet. He wouldn’t dare follow through with anything with Logan that Austin didn’t okay first. Hunter didn’t have a sister, but he knew that was the code. “Yeah? Well, lookin’ the way you do, somebody’s probably goin’ to leave their date just to take you home. Or they should, anyway.” Hunter’s lips twitched into a quick smile before he forced himself to look away from her face, finding Austin in Greer’s arms not too far away and using that to anchor himself. “None of the guys here are even worth wastin’ your time with, you know that, Lola.”

“I have to tell you,” she rubbed her finger around the top of her glass. “there is one perk to a small town,” Cassandra brought the glass of liquor to her lips. “I can actually sit her in relative peace.” In Chicago there was no way that she would be able to sit up at the bar and not have someone go and hit on her or try to but her a few drinks throughout the night. Not that the woman was complaining, okay, maybe a little, but it was a bit refreshing to have a quiet night. Even the bar was relatively empty. “Though maybe that’s because it’s only a Tuesday night.” She teased, shaking her head, “but whatever, it’s fantastic.” And that’s not something she ever thought she’d be saying about Madison ever again.

“Yeah, I’ll give you that. Back in Dallas, I’d be beatin’ the pervs away with a stick if I had you sittin’ here at my bar top.” Hunter was resting his hips against the counter in front of her, hands resting on the bar top as he leaned forward. He wasn’t too close to her, not enough to invade her space, but enough that it was clear he wasn’t going anywhere for a while. “Tuesdays usually don’t pick up until,” he paused, glancing at his watch, “eight, eight thirty. We’ll get you all liquored up and send you off on your way home before then so nobody bothers you.”

Matt chuckled and turned his attention back to Rita’s truck, assessing what needed to be fixed before looking back up at Hunter. “Well how about this.” He headed back to his truck to grab his toolbox, sauntering back towards Hunter a moment later. “I’ll fix this little rod in here that needs to be tightened, you go on inside and pour me a beer and I’ll come find you in about ten minutes so we can talk over the details of your repayment for my services.” They both knew exactly what was about to happen in his office and it was only made more evident by Matt’s smirk and the wink he shot Hunter before grabbing a wrench from his toolbox.

Hunt took in the view of the man’s backside as he walked away, continuing as he returned. When Matthew was in front of him and speaking again, Hunter’s lips curled upward into a smile again before a slow nod spoke first. “I think I can handle that. Your usual is on tap and I would hate to be out here distractin’ you from this very important work.” Hunter moved toward him and gave Matt’s shoulders a squeeze, leaning in toward his ear so that his breath would definitely be felt by the other man. “Don’t keep me waitin’ too long or I’ll have to start takin’ care of things myself.” He made sure his hands didn’t leave the male’s body until the last possible second as he peeled himself away. Finally turning toward the bar, he made his way toward it.

Inside, he didn’t talk to anyone longer than absolutely necessary, making his way behind the bar and pouring two tall glasses of beer. He gave the bartender on duty a nod before heading into his office. Hunter sat down in his chair before leaning back and resting his feet on the desk in front of him and tucking his hands behind his head. He was debating clearing the desk off, but it wasn’t exactly filled with a lot of stuff, and some part of him knew it’d be just as likely they end up going at it against the wall or the door. He’d left the door cracked just slightly, so as soon as he hard Matthew opening it, he looked up from where he was staring at his shoes. “So you do make quick work of it, then.”

Regret never filled Saffy so swift and complete as it did when she stepped foot into the famed Booze Barn. A shudder ran down her spine as the first few notes of whatever honky tonk, achy breakey, country ditty was filtering through the sound system. She didn’t think places like this existed outside that whacked out town from Footloose and she wondered if the patrons lingering about would suddenly break out in synchronized line dancing. “So this shit plays all the time then? Like all the time?,” she leveled a look of barely veiled disgust at the man sitting across from her who happened to be the owner of the establishment. It might not have been the best line to drop in the middle of an interview but it was really starting to grate on her nerves and she just couldn’t help herself. “Fuck me, how your brain hasn’t turned into scrambled eggs is a god damn mystery”

She might have been a little more irritable than usual, accepting the fact that Madison was going to be her home for the foreseeable future was a damn hard pill to swallow. And not the fun kind. But she needed some cash and she may not have been good at a lot of things but she knew how to mix a drink. “Do me a favor…Hunter was it? I ever start getting hip with the thrown down just push me in front of the nearest runaway tractor. It’d be a mercy killing, trust”

Hunter was used to the same ol’ faces, but occasionally a new one would pop up at his bar and throw him for a loop like the one that just walked in. When he heard the comment that came from said new face, he chuckled, dropping his head and looking at his feet. While he sometimes fit the look, a shirt with the sleeves rolled up and jeans, Hunter had never given off the country bumpkin vibe. He had small town in his blood, but country had never run through his veins like it did most other people in town. After closing, when he’d switch the station and set his own vibe, Hunt often jammed out to oldies rock. Right now, though, business hours were on and he was paying attention to the music for the first time all day. It began to cycle in the background on a loop, really. “Yeah, it does, and trust me, if I had half a brain to begin with I probably would’ve lost it by now.” Humming to himself at the thought, he nodded. “Alright, but let’s get it in writin’ so I am covered. I’m too pretty for jail, ya know?”

He was surprised that both of them managed to attend, Levi himself only coming whenever required of him by Lyla, and in the years since her death he hadn’t been to many of the events. He had lost most interest. The mention of the kid though had him sighing, he hadn’t even realised how much work went into kids and that they weren’t self sufficient, and he was lucky he had Nick as a roommate to remind him that he had to feed her, clothe her, find someone to watch her when he wasn’t there. “Yeah, the neighbour girl is watching. She’s a college kid, desperate for money.” he replied with a shrug, finding it odd that a college kid didn’t want to attend the ball but then again, they had more focus and determination than Levi could ever muster. “Who’d you bring tonight? Or you stag?”

“College kids will do a lot of dumb stuff for money, that’s for sure,” Hunter said, thinking back to some of the shit he’d seen guys and gals do back in Dallas. He’d bartended there at a bar not far from a college campus, and it was quickly decided that it wasn’t worth the shitty tips based on the shenanigans they all got up to. He moved to a different bar not long after starting. “I brought Morgan. Valdez, you know her? She works for me, I’ve probably mentioned her before.” Hunter knew he had mentioned Morgan. Levi knew just how much Hunter had wanted to sleep with the woman and just how much he wondered if it was a bad idea. “What about you?”
