Establishment of the free trade illusion for developing country through the fair trade agreement by the developed country.

Developing states have not only became the target of baseless accusation by economic experts from developed states, but also victimized. Sadly, the developed country, keep using the illusion of “fair trade to” manipulate the developing country.

According to the most visible manisfestation of all the advanced hurdles faced by the stakeholders in the trade system, especially in developing states is the effort to shift the purpose of “free trade into fair trade”. “fair trade” as a concept is more subjective, since the more it is used, the government shall have more justification to protect domestic industry or to add pressure for trade liberalization. Along with the principle of reciprocity, “fair trade” is the foundation of “interventionist” policy development. This principle is the feedback by the government to realize the “level the playing field”.

The clamoring demand for fair trade has pushed the foundation and debate regarding trade policy reforms and threatens the intergrity of multilateral trade area with two routes: Firstly; the suggestion to pursue “fair trade” as an explicit objective policy had became the reason for developed states to pursue unilateral or bilateral policies that not only overlaps GATT regulation, but also undermines the multilateral agreement itself. in the end, agreements and multilateral processes was unable to create a fair result and what’s left is for one to save herself. Secondly; the inexistence of “fairness” in trade relationship laid out the need of intervention and planning on domestic economy to avoid privatization efforts due to playstrings from the third party.

In the end, the effort to realize “fairness” in international trade for developing states could only be possible through the legislative role. Undoubtedly, the government can intervene in globalization through defensive or offensive methods. Defensive intervention by maintaining trade barriers, meanwhile offensive intervention is possible by directly participating into the global competition fora, displaying an attractice environment, opening possiblities for TNC’s global strategy within their national boundary or to conduct lobby against other states through their subsidiaries to welcome the main armada.
