Look I’m white so take what I say with a grain of salt, but from everything I’ve seen of Psych so far, I love that Gus isnt Shawn’s black best friend. He’s Shawn’s best friend who is also black. A show genuinely can become so boring by playing out tropes. While a show like this could easily make Gus the black best friend trope, he is just Shawn’s best friend. Especially for a show made in the 2000’s it’s such a refresh. He’s Shawn’s best friend first and the quirky guy second, it never feels like his quirky bits get in the way of being a guy. And that’s it is they treat him like a person not just some side character to be put in for laughs. I know I don’t talk about him a lot on this blog but I adore Gus and it’s not hard to say at all that Psych wouldn’t be psych without Gus.

My favorite "like grandfather like grandaughter" thing about Colton and Alice is how both of them, in a fit of teenage pique, rashly threw something they valued into the pond, immediately regretted it, bent down to try and retrieve it, lost their balance and fell face-first into the water, and that's how they discovered time travel.

sorry. sorry. if I start thinking about the actual Concept of The Way Home for more than 10 seconds it makes me tear up. the thought of getting to spend time with your family when they were your age or relatives that passed away before you ever came into this world is so heartbreakingly beautiful. imagine getting to spend time with your grandfather in his prime and getting to see him as a teenager. imagine watching your grandparents fall in love in real time. imagine knowing your mom before she ever became your mom. how magical that would be. how it would ease the ceaseless passage of time just slightly. the concept of the pond itself will always make me cry because it shows how important people are and how we are nothing without those who came before us.

just imagine being james moriarty when john finally comes in picture. not only did you lost your best friend, because you disagree on morals (or whatever the reason for a breakup is going to be), but he moves on without seemingly any effort. it's so easy on him that he finds someone new to replace you, someone who clearly doesn't match his level, someone who clearly doesn't understand him the way you do and still he prefers this someone over you. while your life constantly revolves around him, obsessively trying to get his attention, trying to convince him to join you, because you wanted it to be both of you. god jealousy must be eating james alive

This line is so funny and clever for so many reasons. On the surface the way that the whole story revolves around the Holmes family is very reminiscent of Greek tragedies that so often revolve around one or two (very messy) families (which is why James says this in the first place). The funny part - James hooking up with Beatrice after flirting with both Sherlock and his mom - everyone hooks up with everyone in Greek myth.

However I feel like it goes much farther than that. Throughout the show there are references to many literary works (Art of War, Hamlet, etc…) which all bring their own metaphors and whatnot (that would be a separate post). This specific reference could just be about the inevitably of the endings of Greek tragedies and dramatic irony (e.g. Orpheus is always going to turn around). We know Sherlock and James are gonna end up as mortal enemies but it’s so interesting to watch how it plays out in this version.

More on a limb but this could also be about James himself being Sherlock’s “fatal flaw.” Although in Greek tragedies it’s less of a flaw and more just how the story line unfolds; “hamartia” (often used for fatal flaw) can translate to “mistake”. Sherlock’s mistake is trusting James and letting him learn everything about him even though Sherlock has no way to know that until it’s too late. (Think about how often characters try to avoid a prophecy which only results in them fulfilling it). Another part of this is that there are no “good” or “evil” characters in Greek tragedy, everyone is multifaceted and can represent different mortals and aspects of the story (like in Antigone especially).

Another aspect of Greek tragedies - recognition and reversal: we see the moment after James first kills someone that he’s kinda freaking out but he has also unlocked something he didn’t know was in him. Later there will likely be a moment where Sherlock finally understands that James is no longer the good man he once was (was he ever?).

what's so devastating about having Young Sherlock focus on Sherlock before he's a consulting detective and James before he's, well, an evil genius out to destroy Sherlock even if it will kill them both, is that James and Sherlock meet at their lowest emotional and professional points in the series. they see each other at their most abandoned and vulnerable, but it's actually Sherlock who is the most vulnerably open, because James very rarely gives anything away about himself or his history.

Sherlock, meanwhile, brings James everywhere and invites him to the most inner circle of his life. he even trusts him with his own mother. it makes the pit of my stomach churn watching it, because you can just see James filing away all of this information in the way he files away everything he learns about everyone -- it's how James has survived, by remembering everything about a person's situation and what their weaknesses are, because he's a person who has had to work upon weaknesses to get what he's owed.

at the same time, James is so devoted to Sherlock that we know his efforts to help him all the time is genuine. and yet...he's going to remember all of this, and he's going to use all of this one day, too.

Young Sherlock is bringing back my Sherlock Holmes obsession and I'm loving it.

I just read 3 of the Sherlock Holmes short-stories immediately after finishing young sherlock.

Sherlock Holmes is the funniest case of “doomed by the narrative” ever. Doomed by the narrative and destined to die young bc the creator hated him, and then the fans literally bullied him into un-dooming the narrative, writing about him for another thirty years, and giving the character a canonical happy ending where he retires to the countryside and keeps bees. Funniest shit ever.
