How do you blur the fading for roan horses? When I try to, the result looks messy because other colors (the line art and background) get mixed in but yours look natural.
If your lineart and background are getting mixed in that means you're coloring everything on the same layer or the blending tool has a setting that blends everything. I'm not sure what you use, but if there's only one layer available then you'll just have to be careful, it can be tedious but I've seen some amazing work done on one layer. If you have an airbrush tool I recommend it over a blending tool.
I use Clip Studio Paint. For me, it's the airbrush tool on a color layer, with a few settings in the program activated so I can just do this:
It kind of looks like magic from an outside perspective. A roan in seconds.
I’m so sorry people traced your art without consent. If anybody wants to use bases, there’s a user on deviantart named derp8675309 who makes free bases. Y’all seriously need to make sure linearts are free to use by asking the artist first before tracing/coloring instead of just assuming they are.
Thank you. Derp is one of the reputable base makers I've heard of, but there's also @ w.interslineart on instagram if you want more unique poses/style.
Since I can't find any bases made using my art, I can only presume they're just tracing over the originals, but considering people are telling me they thought it was a free base I'd assume there's lineart someone made out there?? But maybe some people just think I used a base to make those images so they think they can just use it?? I'm not really sure. One person said they'd confront the person who gave them permission but I've heard nothing and don't expect to.
PSA: I've been told by at least two people that they were informed my art of Ghost and Echo were free-to-use bases. They're not. Someone either made a base out of these without my consent, or people are using the same lie. Never once have I implied that these can be used in this manner, nor do I consent to it.
Since I don't know who is responsible I can't do anything about it, I can only confront the people I've caught using them, but I want to make it clear: THESE ARE NOT BASES!
While the full-body adult poses were referenced from movie frames, they're still free handed. If you want to use those poses you can get them directly from the movie. The bust and foal art you won't find in the movie, they're entirely my work, and frankly to me it's quite clear they're not from the movie but I'm more familiar with my own art than anyone else.
I have bases posted to my KoFi, currently only paid ones. I plan to post free bases eventually, but with my carpal tunnel I haven't been able to work on them. But I'm beginning to wonder if posting bases at all may be a mistake.
Love how almost every Spirit x Rain foal is a filly. Like the fandom collectively agreed that Spirit would and should be a girldad.
I'm so glad we all agreed he's a girl dad. I barely interacted with the fandom prior to making Echo so I had no idea most people made fillies, it just seemed like the correct answer.
Here's Fox's parents! I kind of revealed them before in the family tree I made in a previous post, but this is a better glimpse at how they looked.
Fox mostly gets his looks from his momma Sinopa. She was a very kind and gentle mare, if not a bit overbearing to her foals. Eagle on the other hand was a very rough and tough stallion that fought valiantly for his herd. Fox had immense respect for both.
Fox's birth herd was rounded up by settlers, and separated. Fox was only a yearling at the time, and escaped through luck and cleverness. The fate of his parents is unknown, he doesn't know where they went. But he was expected to leave the herd soon anyways, so he hesitantly moved on.

Now a stallion base is available too!
More SSOTC OC stuff! I've been wanting to cook some of this up for awhile and I polished things enough to post. I'd like to do a proper like... sheet or compilation (?) for all my SSOTC OCs. But I'll cobble together whatever I can for now.
I happen to be in a yapping mood, so buckle up.
I started a family tree image for Echo's lineage! I could've included a lot more horses from her parents' lineages, but heck, enough people have done those kinds of family trees and I'd like to focus mainly on my characters.
I know Spirit's genes are hotly debated, but I headcanon him as a dunskin. Overall, I'm really not that concerned about genetics, I use them as a guideline for my designs but I like to get creative. Which is sacrilege to a lot of horse people, they've certainly let me know that...
Echo wasn't originally going to be a dun, I didn't give her a dorsal stripe for a reason. But I've since changed my mind, so future art of her will have a dorsal stripe. You might also notice Fox happens to be a dun here too. This decision comes from designing their first two kids, who I really wanted to be duns. I'll adjust Fox' design in future art as well, likely to be a more noticeable change than with Echo.
Speaking of Fox, here you'll get the first peek at his sire: Eagle! He's a seal brown bay, with silver, roan and dun. I was tempted to make him an appaloosa too, might not be too late... I'll be posting both Eagle and Fox's dam, Sinopa, together at some point.
But here's a little something I've been so excited to do: the first batch of foals in Echo's herd!
Not including Faith and Valor here, of course. They're destined to be background characters, but goodness I had fun with them. As always, I tried to simplify their designs a bit to fit the animation style, but I might have to go a lot simpler to make them appear more like background characters. But that's no fun.
And yes, following a bit of realism here, Fox isn't exclusive to Echo. While Echo is undoubtedly the lead mare and his beloved, Fox is a stallion after all. I imagine this is the same case for Spirit, Rain is his sweetheart but how else are you going to explain the other foals in his herd? Now, Fox isn't the only stallion in Echo's herd. Wolf is the herd's lovingly tolerated satellite stallion. But while Fox does allow him to stick around the herd, he will not let him near Echo. So don't expect any Wolf x Echo foals in the future.
Now, it seems I may have forgotten to mention Faith and Valor on most of my socials. Oopsies, my bad. I made them around a bad time, I had posted them officially on Insta, but then shortly after archived the post.
They're Fox and Echo's twin foals. They're like two peas in a pod and create trouble together, but eventually they part ways at some point in their adulthood. I have some story ideas brewing, but again, nothing concrete yet.
You may notice how much Faith looks like Esperanza. Which is indeed on purpose, surely her name being synonymous with Hope (the English meaning of Esperanza) also helps to give that away. I always loved Esperanza, and I just thought it'd be cute if her great granddaughter were just like her. Look at them!
They never meet, but maybe Faith is Esperanza's reincarnation? A concept to think about, perhaps.
While I still need to draw adult Faith, I do have an adult Valor to present to you:
Valor is set to be the next main character after Echo's story ends. Which, yeah, I know... Echo doesn't even HAVE a complete story yet. But what can I say? I love creating new horses. By the time I'm done this family tree is going to be a mighty oak.
Something I do want to note: I'm on the fence of whether Ghost will ever have foals. I wouldn't rule it out yet, but for anyone anticipating seeing some I wouldn't hold your breath.
But anyways, yeah. I hope this is enough OC content to make up for me being kinda quiet lately. You know how it be. If y'all ever have questions and want me to talk more about my little brain children, my asks are open. :)
How about some Faith.

kia ora crew!! my rent due day is approaching fast yet again, so I'm opening 3 quick YCHs to do between larger comms!
$40USD for one pony, $70 for two, and $100 for three! if your character is extra detailed, there'll be a small extra cost of $5.
some examples of how it'll look! a clean sketchy style with simple shading. I can change hoof shapes, add or remove horns or wings, change muzzle/eye shapes, and adjust the body type. no extra cost for any of this as long as it isn't too drastic of an adjustment!

A new pony OC to add to my roster, one that I've been slowly working on for the past few months. She stands out a lot compared to my other ones, who all have very dull or dark colors. Her design is inspired from some of my favorites from Gen 1 & 3.
I was stumped on a name for her for the longest time; and not from the lack of ideas, mind you. I came up with a lot of great names, but none of them really stuck. But I finally made up my mind on Star Sweeper! Which the idea for this name comes from this song. If you see her name change between now and any future posts of her, no you didn't.
I love every prior generation of My Little Pony, so of course I had to try and shoehorn Star into each one. She's my excuse for taking a stroll down Nostalgia Avenue. Each of these is based from official artwork and renders (and a show screenshot in the case of G4). This sorta practice would be sacrilege to 15 year old me, but I ain't got time to expertly replicate art styles, dammit.
The latest generation, though... needs to grow on me still, I think. It's the first generation to release since I became an adult, so it just doesn't appeal to me. I will never outgrow drawing ponies, but I have absolutely outgrown the shows and toys. But I do love the new models, so couldn't leave it out of this roster.
It was a pain to make this, honestly. Rendered it by hand because I don't know how to edit the official renders like others do. But I'm quite proud of it! Sorta looks like a Smash Bros render lmao.
I'm adding this reblog years later to just say: a lot of people have taken her G4 variation and used it without my consent. While it's not her main design, it's still my character being stolen.
I plan to never sell Star Sweeper, and I do not consent to anyone using my designs for their own OCs. Please do not repost my art to Pinterest, that's the whole reason this is happening.
For some good luck 🐎✨✨
Happy New Year, gang. I keep forgetting I have social media platforms to post to my bad. Get ready for the year of the horse, more horse content coming your way.

i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors
“red and green are opposites 🥰” cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a child’s finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit
ok i can’t explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like
with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, don’t distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing
is it too much to ask
gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that
cohesive but still contrasting
This kind of talks about color and composition
This is a bit about landscape specifically
Values & composition
Contrast in composition
Balance in colors & values
This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones
Cohesion within compositions/lighting
"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!
This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!
Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process
With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)
thanks this is super helpful! /gen
If you'd like 2 Print books that I absolutely reccomend to every visual artist regardless of Media, Color and Light and Imaginative Realism by James Gurney are basically religious texts for artists, even the 3-D people because his understanding and explanation of how light and form work is that damn good.
If you're wondering about Mr. Gurney's chops:
