Heyy, noticed you do commissions, I do too lol. I'm just starting out and have a question to ask another artist: scammers/time wasters, how do you deal with them? They pop up everywhere and I don't know how to tell if a commission is real or a scam :(

Hello! It can be a bit difficult to tell sometimes. If you don't already take your primary payments through online invoicing somehow (I use paypal) you should look into that. Not only does it help keep your business organized, it avoids funds from being blocked and I find it is a good way to protect yourself against scams.

Some examples:

-Sketch for free scam that is later used for AI rendering. To avoid this, I never work for free. I'll ask for a percentage down to start the sketching process and bill through invoicing. Usually, if people intend to do this it will be harder for them to receive the sketch and then ask for a refund from paypal afterward, so they will outright refuse to start which saves you some time. Anyone who wants to work with you legitimately will be happy to see a sketch in the process anyway. It might not stop them from feeding the sketch into ai but at least you don't come away with nothing.

-Never work for someone who wants you to download a random app to speak with them (discord, whatsapp, etc). Make sure you have a clear way for potential clients to reach you vs reach out to them. Never work for someone who wants to pay you in their own fancy way. Sometimes scammers will bury these red-flags until way into the conversation. So I often lead suspicious emails by expressing that I only take payment via my invoicing. This usually gets them to explain they want to do their strange billing system right away and it will save you a lot of frustration.

-Be suspect of accounts that are overly vague, inactive, or ask you to do something way outside of your typical wheelhouse. There have been rare occasions I do get a valid gig that have both of these happening. The above methods usually keep you safe. 90% of the time though, these are scammers.

-Weed out if it is NFT or crypto related by stating that you will not do that from the get go. If someone wants to 'buy' your work for a gallery you can almost guarantee it is one of the two related.
